Our take on the AudioControl Matrix Plus

Feed your amps the signal they deserve
AudioControl created the Matrix Plus 6-channel line driver with one goal in mind — to make your car audio system sound better. Many modern car stereos boast 4- and 5-volt preamp outputs, but they're rated at full output. Turn your stereo to a normal volume level, send the signal through a 20-foot cable, and your amps may end up with just a couple of volts. Enter the Matrix Plus.

Get the most out of your system
The Matrix Plus boosts the signal from your receiver up to 24 dB, right up to the maximum level accepted by your amplifier or processor. The high-voltage level keeps the noise out of your system, while feeding your amps the signal they need to deliver top performance. The Matrix is designed with three sets of inputs and outputs for the traditional front/rear/subwoofer setup, but it can also handle three separate 2-channel source units if desired.

Simple operation
Once connected, the Matrix Plus makes it easy — turn up the gain knobs until the lights indicate the proper output, and you're all set. The overload light lets you know if you need to back off on the gain. Balanced inputs reject noise caused by your vehicle's electrical system, but you can switch to unbalanced operation if necessary. The Matrix Plus's low-impedance output keeps your signal going strong through long cable runs.

If you don't have this, then the stereo you think you have really isn't all that great or loud or hits. If you add this then you will have the most slamming, banging, knockin, hittin stereo in the world! hehe! It will even make your cheap Sony Explodes and junky 3000watt amp sound like they cost more than 100 bucks! and for even more fun get the Audiocontrol Epicenter and then you will really have something! Like me!

Pros: the best in the world!

Cons: none.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a 2008 Ford Ranger with an alpine cde-123 head unit and a 4 channel alpine 50 watt amp along with a 500 watt alpine mono block amp. My speakers are alpine spr-68 100 watt x 4. I have 2 Rockford Fosgate 10 inch shallow mount subs in custom boxes behind the seats. I bought the matrix plus because i found I was having to turn the 4 volt deck all the way up to like 20 something before I could really start to hear the music. I found the matrix plus to have way to much gain. Maybe it would sound better in a bigger space like a car or even 6x9s that could tone it down a bit. I think the 6x8 and small enclosure of my truck weren't a good match. I'll save it for my next system. Hope this helped.

Not bad, but needs work

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this because my head unit was getting kinda old and was struggling to keep a constant voltage to my amps. It definitely boosts the voltage like it states and makes my music much, much louder. My problem, and it's a big problem, the maximum light on it keeps flickering, even when my music is loud by any means, it's barely turned a quarter of the way before the maximum light comes on. And when the subs hit, the light might as well as stay lit instead of flicker. I wish it wasn't maxing out before my music was turned up. I did notice that the music was cleaner and crisper then before, but because the device is always maxed out, I have disconnected it and hope that I can find someone that is willing to mess with it so that it's not maxed and talking volume level.

Pros: Louder music, cleaner sound.

Cons: Maxes out way too easily.

i bought this product to get a cleaner sound from my pioneer hu at first was a little disappointed not with the sound quality which was great but with the fact that i now had a very noticeable hiss in my speakers on my first 2 calls to crutchfield tech i got answers like thats normal the line gtivers is doing its job.well finally i talked to connor at tech he walked me through a better adj.process which eliminated the hiss and cleaned up the sound even im very happy with the product

Pros: great clarity highs and lows never sounded better

Works Great

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I needed the matrix to change and boost my signal from my stock pre-amp signal so I could run an amp. Works great. The best part is that my amp does not have a remote gain for the sub. I love having control over my sub volume!

Pros: Easy to use. Remote gain for sub channel.

Cons: Size. I wish it could be smaller.

Hands-on research

Product Research

Line Driver: To achieve the best possible signal to noise ratio and dynamic range from your amplifiers, a line driver can increase the head unit's output voltage up to 24 dB (maximum is 9.5 volts RMS/13 volts peak). The Matrix has three sets of inputs and three sets of outputs.

Input Gain: The input gains are adjustable up to +24 dB, allowing you to increase the head unit's line voltage to the top of your amp's input range; up to 9.5 volts RMS/13 volts peak. Each of the three sets of outputs has an individual gain control.

Output Voltage Indicators: Each set of outputs has four LEDs to indicate the output voltage; 1 volt, 2 volts, 5 volts, and Maximized (9.5 volts).

Balanced Inputs: Using the balanced differential input circuit cancels noise picked up in the transmission line between the Matrix Plus and the the source unit. The three sets of inputs can be individually set to balanced or unbalanced if needed.

Ground Isolation: The power supply ground is switchable, in case of ground loop noise. The factory position is fully isolated (typically the best choice), but can be changed to Ground or 200Ω.

Input Linking: The rear and subwoofer sections can be linked (independently) to the front inputs, useful if the source unit has only one or two pair of line outputs.

Subsonic Filter: The subsonic filter on the subwoofer output is 18 dB/octave at 33 Hz.

Terminal Block: The power/ground/remote terminal is removable; the wiring is attached to the block, then the block is plugged into the chassis of the Matrix Plus.

Optional Wired Remote: An optional wired remote is available to adjust the subwoofer output level (item number 161ACR1, sold separately).

Thanks for your question. For information on comparing two or more models I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to help determine the differences and help you make the best choice for your system and your budget. [ Krissy  Jan 10, 2016 ]  Staff
I wouldn't recommend it. Is there a reason you are trying to convert unbalanced inputs? If you are pulling signal from a head unit that isn't a premium signal to begin with I would purchase that first and then look at upgrading your system with this unit later. Sorry, I can't be of more help...I'd need more info and specs to give you a better answer. Good luck on your project!!! PS I am assuming you read through the instruction manual but again...upgrade your head unit first. You'll thank yourself for the years of pristine sound. Also, Dynamat everything including your roof and trunk before doing this type of upgrade. Best wishes. [ ANTHONY R  Jul 29, 2015 ]
I mounted the Unit about a foot away from the source unit. I hope that helps. I also used in a marine application will all jl audio marine amplifiers [ Call Assocites  Sep 22, 2014 ]
I have this mounted in my trunk next to a amp and have great sound quality, i am not sure the distance at which the sound quality starts to drop off or even if its noticeable. From the videos that i have seen of this being installed the trunk is the best location. If you have an amplifier its best to place it close by, the wiring is easier. mark [ Mark  Sep 22, 2014 ]
