Overview

Our take on the Shure SFG-2

Did you know that dialing in the proper tracking force for your turntable's phono cartridge is crucial for optimum playback? Too little force, and the stylus won't seat properly in the grooves, potentially causing skipping (or mistracking), and increased wear to your stylus and precious vinyl LPs. Too much force, and you'll over-compress your cartridge's internal suspension mechanism, causing its internal signal generating assembly to become misaligned and resulting in a loss of performance.

Be "Shure" your turntable is on the right track

Did you know that dialing in the proper tracking force for your turntable's phono cartridge is crucial for optimum playback? Too little force, and the stylus won't seat properly in the grooves, potentially causing skipping (or mistracking), and increased wear to your stylus and precious vinyl LPs. Too much force, and you'll over-compress your cartridge's internal suspension mechanism, causing its internal signal generating assembly to become misaligned and resulting in a loss of performance.

Unfortunately, the traditional method of calibrating your 'table's tracking force — floating the tonearm, then twisting the counterweight to the desired setting — can actually be inaccurate by a wide margin. That's why we strongly recommend the Shure SFG-2 to anyone looking to really fine-tune their rig. This simple, easy-to-use stylus force gauge ensures that your cartridge is tracking precisely at the manufacturer's recommended setting, giving you the best possible sound quality, and minimizing wear and tear on your stylus and records.

Product Highlights:

  • ensures proper stylus tracking force to prevent mistracking, excessive record and stylus wear, and poor sound reproduction
  • easy-to-use, balance-beam design accurate to within .1 grams in primary operating range (0.5 to 1.5 grams)
  • measures tracking forces from 0.5 to 3.0 grams in .05 gram increments
  • roller bearing pin pivots for minimal friction and smooth operation
  • each gauge individually factory calibrated for a high degree of accuracy
  • warranty: 2 years
  • Our 60-day money-back guarantee

Shure, the gauge the others are judged by for decades.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Wow, talk about nostalgia! I've been 'into' vinyl since 1975 and recently needed to purchase a stylus gauge for the first time since the 80's and the Shure SFG-2 is exactly the same as the last one I purchased 30-years ago. I debated wether to purchase a digital gauge, but the overwhelming response on several audio forums was to 'keep it simple stupid' and get a Share mechanical gauge. I guess when you perfect a product, there is no need to change it.

Pros: Simple, effective, inexpensive. Nothing to wear out, recharge, or break, just don't loan it out or loose it and it should last a lifetime.

Cons: None.

Check your down force.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Works great. Much better price than some and works just fine. My weight needed to be 1.5 which is at the end. The slide kept moving because it was at the end of it's bar. Had to be gentle with it. Worked fine as soon as I realized it was moving. Next time I will use the "2" needle setting and measure for 0.75. That would work better than "1" and measuring 1.5. Will give the same results.

Pros: cost does the same job as the higher priced ones

Cons: the slide is a little loose. See my note. But it worked.

Simple product that yields great results

John from San Diego, CA on 3/31/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This product turned out to be better than advertised and I ended up buying it on the strength of only 6 reviews. I've got a pristine 70s-era Sansui turntable that I'm trying to make last another 10+ years or more so being able to tweak any part of it with accuracy is important to me. It took me longer to read the instructions than it did to actually set up the tonearm; it was that easy.

Pros: Ease of use and good result

Cons: None

So glad that I ordered this to complement my turntable from the 90s which still functions. But now I see how out of line it has been. Since I used this gauge my tonal response from my vinyl has improved 100%. A worthwhile tool to own if you enjoy vinyl recordings Thank you for this gauge.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this and found out my technique of balancing the tone arm, setting the weight to zero and then adjusting the tracking force was off by about a gram. Glad I had this to verify

Pros: Easy to use

Cons: Plastic frame seems a little cheap

Great Product

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Understand I have never before owned a turntable and am a beginner by definition so getting into vinyl was a bit intimidating. This Sure product came with easy to understand, straight-forward instructions, was well built, east to use, and works as advertised. Glad I decided to buy this when setting up my new Teac TN-300 turntable. Definitely was more accurate than the built in dial on the tone arm. Once you do it once, can properly dial in stylus pressure in under 5 minutes.

Pros: Easy to use, accurate, great instructions

Cons: None

key ingredient for analog geeks

Fritz F from New York on 10/16/2015

If you are into vinyl, swapping out cartridges, maximizing tonal quality and record life this gadget is a no brainer. It allows yo to make sure you are tracking at the proper recommended weight supplied by the stylus manufacturer. The counter weight on the tonearm is close but this scale helps you nail it down.

Pros: in expesnive.

Cons: The 2 different ratios on the balance beam are hard to read.
