This speaker rocks, but it won't roll

The Niles RS8SI Pro stereo-input speaker delivers spacious sound while disappearing into the surrounding landscape. Your outdoor music will sound exceptional thanks to Niles' careful design and attention to detail.

Thoughtfully designed for clear sound

The RS8SI Pro features dual 1" dome tweeters for crisp highs and an 8" polypropylene woofer for rich midrange and bass. Niles mounts the drivers closer behind the grille than most rock speaker manufacturers for more accurate sound with better imaging. And the tweeters are angled upwards 20 degrees, so the high frequencies are aimed at the listener and not the ground. All of the RS-Pro series speakers have the option to be wired as single channel loudspeakers.

Stands up to the elements

The RS8SI Pro is completely weatherproof — you can leave it outside fully exposed to whatever nature brings, worry-free. It has passed some of the most stringent environmental tests ever devised for outdoor speakers, including extensive salt fog and UV exposure testing. Plus, it can handle extreme temperatures, from -50 to 185 degrees. You'll enjoy "rock"-solid sound for years to come.

Niles RS8SI Delivers!

Scott from Tennessee on 7/21/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Been a while since I purchased a new audio system.... first time dealing with an outdoor setup. Did some research and found a common thread about how much power and performance you need to get serious results outdoors vs. an indoor system. Let me tell you these Niles rock speakers and some serious units. I have a 8 channel / 125 w per channel amp and they literally launch out of my wife's landscaping. Don't think for a second that because these things look like rocks they must be lacking in performance, they are the real deal, don't hesitate to get them in your outdoor amphitheater!

Pros: Superb bass and treble response They can handle the power

Cons: How about a 12" version!

Great sound

I have five Niles RS8SI Pro around my pool / patio area and they sound great. The in-ground bass GSS10 and SWA-500 complete the sound. I used all Niles (SI-2150 and SSVC-6) and I'm very happy with it.

This Rock Rocks

Great sound from a Rock!

nikto from Iowa on 8/5/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Niles RS8SI is a great addition to any outdoor space. The rock looks very realistic and is large in size so it actually resembles a small boulder rather than a rock. I have had other rock speakers in the past but Niles has done a great job with the look. On to the sound, I was surprised by the quality of the sound from these speakers. The bass is nice and does eliminate the need for a subwoofer. I order two of these speakers and have powered them with a 100W/ch amp and the sound they produce exceeds the level I can play them at while still be a good neighbor. The tweeters have a nice dynamic range and you can even make out details in the music. The sound is not muffled like some outdoor speakers and musical runs are crisp. If you are looking for a high quality, good-looking, and nice sounding rock speakers, do not hesitate on the Niles RS8SI. They are sure to impress.

Pros: Realistic Rock appearance; good bass; tweeters are capable of detail

Cons: None so far

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was really excited at the time I received the 2 Niles RS8SI Pro. The rocks look amazing. Completely sealed from every angle. I have several larger Coral rocks in my backyard and they blend in nicely. I can assume that as time goes on the speakers will look more like the actual coral rocks due to natural staining from trees, etc. Both rocks were set-up under single speaker stereo option. This requires 2 pairs of cable per rock. It was a tedious job but thankfully I hired someone to do it. However, I am confident they are properly set up. I originally hooked these up to an NI245 Amp from Niles using a Sonos Connect. It didn't take much time to realize that I needed more juicy to drive these rocks. As such, I ordered (Also from Crutchfield) the NI2150 with a speaker selector also from Niles. Having given the rocks enough juicy it was time to see how they performed in my pool/garden area. The rest of my outdoor set-up includes a pair Definites 6500 driven by the NI245 that was originally intended for the rocks. During the first few weeks the highs coming from the rocks were somewhat harsh. The bass was and is still amazing to this day! You can feel the thump in your chest as you get near the speaker. As time has gone by, I have noticed that the highs are more pleasing to the ears and the overall sound has DRAMATICALLY improved.

Pros: WIfe friendly, stealth, great bass, looks like they will last for really long time

Cons: price, the fact that these will never rival my Definitive 6500 outdoor speakers, you really need to break-in these speakers to get the best sound. Make sure you have lots of juicy to drive them. Your neighbors will hate you.

More than expected from a good looking rock

A Lee from Dallas, tx on 9/26/2013

Exceptional sound from 2 unobtrusive speakers. Have 2 in the landscaping about 20 feet from a fire pit. Provides great sound across a very wide area with more volume than I can realistically use. These would positively thump if I you can get them within 10-15 feet of your listening area. Smaller than I expected as well. I have 7" patio speakers which look monstrous to the wife, but haven't heard any complaints about these.

Pros: Great sound for a relatively small package Wife friendly

Cons: Stereo setup means you need plenty of amp channels and power. Wouldn't even try it if you're running 10-35 watts/channel.

Great Sound!

Niles RS8SI Pro

A Swan from Pewaukee, WI on 6/16/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I ordered three of these speakers to go along the outside edge of our pool which is 40' x 20'. They are wired separately in stereo mode each then pigtailed to then connected to a control4 8 zone amp (120w/channel). I had the dealer restrict to allow using only 60% of the potential amp. It sounds amazing at all volume levels and plenty of bass. If played at 100% available amp level; we would have a very angry neighborhood; it can get loud yet is crystal clear. Extremely happy with these speakers.

Pros: Sturdy construction, realistic rock look, bass and treble sounds incredibly well with all types of music. Stereo mode is awesome for covering a large listening area. Great price!

Cons: None

Great Speaker

Ben from Reston VA on 5/24/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have had this speaker for a month now and so far I love it. I was skeptical at first of getting stereo sound out of one speaker but it really does sound great. This speaker will put out great lows and crystal clear highs. I have connected mine to Zone 2 on my Onkyo tx-sr608 receiver and it sounds great.

Pros: Looks better than most rock speakers. Sounds great. Stereo quality sound from a single speaker.

Overview: The Niles Audio RS8SIPRO Rock Loudspeaker is designed for outdoor use. The GeoRealistic enclosure has the texture and color of natural rock, so it blends in just about anywhere in your yard or landscaping. It is completely weatherproof, and comes with a limited lifetime warranty.

Note: The Niles Audio RS8SIPRO is packaged as a single speaker.

Stereo Inputs: The RS8SIPRO has dual inputs that allow you to connect both left and right channel signals to a single speaker. The dual-voice-coil woofer and dual tweeters give you stereo sound from a single speaker enclosure. As a single stereo speaker, the speaker has an 8 ohm impedance. It can also be configured as a single channel speaker (in a two speaker stereo mode), in which case, the speaker's impedance would be 4 ohms.

Drivers: The RS8SIPRO features an 8" injection-molded TCC (talc, carbon, and ceramic-filled) polypropylene cone woofer with dual voice coils and two 1" Tri-laminate Teteron dome tweeters, bridge-mounted at a 20° angle for optimum dispersion and stereo separation. The ConeForward driver placement and high quality crossover design give you superior quality sound in an outdoor setting. The drivers are covered with shaped MicroPerf aluminum grilles to maintain the natural look.

Weatherproof Enclosure: Niles Audio rock speakers feature proprietary 4-layer fiberglass construction, making it completely weatherproof and acoustically inert. It can withstand extreme environments, including UV exposure and water resistance. It surpasses the military's strict specifications for preventing corrosion (MIL-STD-883D). The enclosure can also withstand temperature extremes of -50°F to 185°F.

Wiring: The RS8SIPRO is equipped with two connected 28" lengths of burial-rated speaker wire with tinned ends. Four waterproof wire nuts are included for splicing on your own speaker wire. If you plan to bury the speaker cable, you should either use cable rated for direct burial, or run the cable through PVC pipe. The recommended gauge of the speaker wire is determined by the maximum length needed:

Wire Gauge Maximum Distance
16 60 feet
14 100 feet
12 160 feet

Speaker Security: The RS8SIPRO comes with a metal security stake and a Nylon security cable. The security cable should be looped through the eyelet on the bottom of the speaker enclosure and secured to the stake, which is then driven into the ground. If desired, enhanced security methods can be used, such as anchoring the speaker to concrete.

Customer Q&A

You do not need a lot of power. They are relatively efficient at 88dB. I would recommend at least 30W with 50W probably be the preferred. I am running mine with about 95W and that is plenty. Do not run anywhere near full volume. [ Ryan  May 11, 2015 ]
Hello Scott. I am pushing 3 rs8si with a 120W amplifier. I have the three speakers wired individually then pigtailed to tie into the respective amp terminals. These are great speakers in all regards. Great treble and tremendous bass for outdoor listening. Friends and family are quite impressed. Get to know and like your neighbors, cause they will be hearing your tunes. Enjoy! Alan [ ALAN  May 07, 2015 ]
Not sure but Im running mine on 90 watts each and I still think it needs more [ Steven  May 06, 2015 ]
I returned them. They were too big for our small back yard. Went with the RS6Si speakers and the Sonos amp. Sounds awesome and "wireless" outdoor solution! [ ian  May 06, 2015 ]
Scott, I'm using a 200watt Denon amp to drive mine and they sound great. More importantly is the amplifier needs to be able to handle a 4 ohm load with out a problem. Look for amps that can drive high current loads. [ TIMOTHY VAN  May 06, 2015 ]
