Hear the music, not the volume controller

Niles volume controls deliver sound to your speakers without getting in the way of the music. While lesser components add pops, clicks and static, Niles brings you pure enjoyment. Their premium-quality parts and construction ensure high-fidelity sound with amplifiers rated at up to 100 watts per channel of continuous power.

Great for systems large or small

These in-wall stereo volume controls offer intuitive operation for your multi-room audio system. The high-power, impedance-magnifying design lets you safely connect as many as eight controls and eight pairs of speakers to a typical receiver or amplifier without installing a speaker selector or any other type of protection device. The sliding control design provides an attractive, modern look.

If your amp's minimum impedance is 8 ohms, you can connect up to 8 pairs of 8-ohm speakers using these volume controls. If your amp's minimum impedance is 4 ohms, you can connect up to 16 pairs of 8 ohms speakers, or 8 pairs of 4 ohm speakers.

Product Highlights:

  • connect up to 8 pairs of 8-ohm speakers to a single stereo amplifier (requires 1 volume control per speaker pair)
  • recommended for use with Niles speaker connecting block
  • adjustable impedance magnification (2x, 4x, and 8x)
  • power handling: 100 watts per channel
  • 12 step control, 54dB maximum attenuation
  • pop-free switching between all steps
  • removable screwless connectors accommodate up to 16-gauge wire
  • Decora-style wall plate and snap-on color insert for quick and easy color changes
    • includes: white, light almond, bone and black wall plates
  • fits most 18-cubic-inch single-gang junction boxes at least 3" deep
  • 2-15/16"W x 4-11/16"H (includes faceplate); depth behind plate: 2-9/16"
  • UL-rated for safe in-wall installation
  • warranty: 10 years
  • Our 60-day money-back guarantee

Product does exactly as stated in the description, this is my 1st Niles product and am pleased with it.

Difficulty installing Niles SVC100K

Nelson from Venice, FL on 9/6/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall performance of the switch is flawless. Appearance and the materials used are top notch. However, connecting my speaker wires (16 gauge) was a nightmare. Engineering design of the clasping mechanism or, pull back clips is sub par. The smallest female would have difficulty pulling back the clip release even with a 1/8 th inch blade. The instruction booklet while very high quality (Niles) did not say how to move the clips to the off position enabling insertion of the wire. I was under the impression that they were spring loaded and needed an additional hand to hold the blade opening the clip. Later I learned that the clip while spring loaded to capture the wire actually had a detent position enabling me to insert the wire and release the clip. While this may seem trivial to those in the trade, it is a defitine negative to the experienced engineer/homeowner who wanted nothing more than to change out an inoperative switch. Back to the drawing boards Niles and in the meantime update the literature to include proper instructions on how to release the clip.

Pros: Great quality of materials and sound

Cons: Very difficult to attach speaker wires

Great Wall Volume Controller

Anonymous from Minneapolis, MN on 12/14/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great volume controller. Connectors physically hard to pull off unit to connect speaker wire. After the two connectors (for amp and speakers) with connected wires are pushed back on circuit board, the volume control is easy to install. Very good wattage rating at 100W. Many volume controls only support about 50W.

Pros: Install, wattage, comes with four colors, selectable impedance multiplier.

Cons: Must lift hard to remove connectors off circuit board to connect speaker wires. Intuitively easy installation though.

Features

Overview: The SVC100K (FG01653) is a high-power sliding stereo speaker volume control that connects between the speaker-level output of an amplifier, speaker selector, or a Niles distribution hub and a pair of speakers. It lets you adjust the volume of a pair of loudspeakers, just as a light dimmer enables you to control the light. Premium-quality parts and construction ensure high-fidelity sound with flat frequency response and 100 watts continuous power handling. It is designed for indoor use only.

Four Colors: The SVC100K installs in-wall in a standard single-gang junction box (J-box). The package includes a Decora faceplate and slider insert in each of four colors: white, light almond, bone, and black.

Selectable Impedance Magnifying Circuit: A universal impedance magnifying circuit enables the SVC100K to act as both a stereo and an impedance magnifying volume control. You can magnify the speakers' impedance by a factor of two, four, or eight, allowing you to connect up to eight pairs of speakers to a single amplifier or receiver. A sliding switch on the circuit board lets you set the impedance factor to 1x, 2x, 4x, or 8x.

12-Step Control: The slide switch gives you 12-step control, and a total of 54dB maximum attenuation. The high-quality construction assures you get pop-free switching between all steps.

Speaker Connectors: The 2-piece screwless speaker connectors make installation quick and secure. Each connector can accept up to 16-gauge wire.

Code Compliance: The SVC100K is listed to comply with local building codes. You should check with your local building official to ensure code compliance for your jurisdiction.

Installation Considerations

Mounting: The SVC100K has a mounting depth of 2-9/16". When installed, the unit extends 2-1/16" behind the sheetrock (assuming 1/2"-thick sheetrock). A standard 18 cubic-inch or larger J-box is required.

Speaker Wire: The SVC100K will accept stranded copper wire up to 16-gauge. Larger (lower gauge) wire is not recommended, as it will not fit into the connectors. Solid-core, aluminum, or "Romex" wire is not recommended. Most states require in-wall speaker wire to have a specific "CL" fire rating.

Required Tools: To install the SVC100K, you will need a Phillips screwdriver and wire stripper.

Quality counts

Written by Ralph Graves, Staff Writer - Creative, on 5/21/2012 2:19:00 PM

Quality makes a difference. I've had experience with sliders made on the cheap and they're frustrating to use. A slide is supposed to give you fine volume control, but if the parts don't fit together very well, then fine control just isn't there.

What impressed me most about the SVC100k is the quality of the construction. The controls slide easily, yet they remained in tight contact with the conductive strips. And they also stayed in place once I removed my hand. The lack of play in the slider ensures it will remain exactly where I want it.

And the four color options are most welcome. Sure, I could paint the outer plate, but it's better all around if I don't have to.

You can install 16 gauge jumper wires from the controller to your 14 gauge house wires. Anytime you change gauge (wire thickness) from larger to small there will be a little less power and a little more resistance. It's like going from a large garden hose to a smaller one. From an end-user standpoint, I doubt you'll notice any difference in output. [ DAVID  Jun 16, 2017 ]
I used 18 AWG x 4 in-wall jacketed wire for my particular installation and it works fine. The manual for the SVC100K recommends 16 AWG "because the larger wire may not fit into the connectors" on the back of the unit. The unit works well. I have it installed for the garage speakers and have some older volume controls for the kitchen, hobby room, study, and deck with all of the speakers fed by an Onkyo through an impedance matching box to protect the amp. If you like the control, buy it, and your wire doesn't fit, you could make jumpers from the 14AWG to 16AWG at the control just using some crimp-style butt splices. There are other options as well. [ Colin  Jun 16, 2017 ]
I believe so. I have many older knob style controllers and have been replacing them with these. They are universal can operate one or a few pairs of speakers. They come with all colors of plates. The old ones had to be ordered specifically the color and amount of speakers. [ Tim  Jan 16, 2016 ]
