Our take on the Kicker 11PECVR12

Kicker has taken the idea of a powered subwoofer and turned it on its head. In the past, powered subwoofers have sacrificed performance in order to fit into a smaller space or or meet a lower price point. But now Kicker uses massive power and high-performance woofers so their PE SubStation™ line of powered subs can compete with custom systems built with separate amps, subs, and boxes, all while keeping the cost reasonable.

A powerful match
It can be tough matching subs, amps, and enclosures together. Kicker's taken the guesswork out of the process by creating the PECVR12 powered sub, matching a massive 400-watt RMS amplifier with a 12" Comp VR subwoofer, then housing them together in a ported, hatchback style box. This way, you won't have to waste time juggling specs — just focus on enjoying your bass.

Easy in, easy out
A quick-connect power harness and removable straps make it easy to pull this sub out of your vehicle, so you can get some storage space back in a pinch. The enclosure is 14-1/2" deep so it's easy to fit in most trunks, while the carpet covering will protect the enclosure and your vehicle against scratches and dents.

Good Bass

Aurey from New Jersey on 11/18/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It really surprised me. I downgraded from 2 10"JLW6v2 powered by 2 500/1 JL Amps. I wanted to keep some decent bass to compliment my components and rear speakers. I figured git it a shot and with the great return policies here at crutchfield, why not. This thing really hits! Obviusly not shattering like previous setup, but still hits. I have a coupe so it really does well. Its a tight fit, but I have more room than before. Definitely a great buy.

Pros: convenient, clean bass.

Cons: make sure to measure the trunk well before ordering.

good times with Kicker

This thing was bought as a supplement to bass after replacing my factory deck and speakers in my Versa hatchback. It was the perfect compliment to the incredible high end I had installed. With the remote gain control adjusting the bass for whatever you are listening to is easy as hell and sounds perfect always. Durable, if you understand what bass is supposed to sound like (keeping away from distortion) it will last forever. 2yrs this has been in my car and NEVER a problem.

Pros: Easy in and out for trunk space, sounds great in my hatchback, easily adjusted bass with remote gain control,

Cons: Now I want another one... or the 10 in the sealed box,

Wow!! Very impressive!!

The reason for 4 stars is the port and wires are on the same side, doesn't hurt anything, but would have looked cleaner if they were on the other side. All around best setup for the money possible!! I love the new addition to my JBL factory system. All good and clear with some bass that hits as hard as u want, just turn the nob!! :)

Pros: It's all quick disconnect and very light, for a quick removal and one person to do it.

Cons: The port and connections are on the same side, hard to get that clean, no wires showing look in my SUV.

Good buy

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great sounding bass and convenience. It's easily removable for trunk space and fit fairly in my really small trunk(g35 coupe). The bass hits really well. I currently have upgrades components up front and interior speakers on my JL 450/4 and was worried it might not balance out. Extremely happy with the price, sound quality, and fitment. I'm planning on using this similar setup for future audio installs in my car. I always stayed away from powered sub/amp combos from other people's experience and wanting that hard hitting bass. No more worrying about that, I'll be using this sub box for years...

Pros: Power, size, sound, looks, price is well worth it....

Cons: Nothing really, maybe some built in handles to remove and carry more securely, but not a big deal...

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It does the job, but honestly I expected more. I thought the sub would flex a little more since the sub has all 400 watts going into it. I'd recommend getting a better kicker sub-box combo like the 12" kicker VR at 800watts and getting an amp to fit that. I bet that would hit harder. Also i'm getting this click/rattle sound coming from the sub when I'm banging it loud. You can't really hear it from inside the car but sometimes you can. Idk if i have the settings too high or what but I like it where i have it or else it wouldn't sound how I want it to.

Pros: Trunk Space, Hits Alright

Cons: Makes a click/rattle sound on low frequencies.

Kicker 11PECVR12 Substation

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I added this powered 12" ported 400 watt RMS subwoofer to my 2012 Nissan Maxima with the factory Bose system

Pros: Added the extra low-end punch that I was looking for in the factory system. Good quality and connections are all on one side for ease of installation. Came with bass level remote (wired) controller which comes in handy as different genres of music have different levels of bass. Just need to add an amp install wiring kit. Can tap into existing factory speaker wiring to pick up signal which is needed for factory systems as there are no low-level outputs on the head unit

Cons: unit is tall and may not fit all the way inside sedan trunk under rear deck (up to back of rear seat)

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nice punchy bass. Vibrates all my mirrors and makes my tailgate rattle when turned up. So it has that ability to give you that kind of sound if you want it... You can always turn it down. Very easy to install because of the builtin amp. It is shaped well to go right up against the rear passenger seat in my SUV.

Pros: Good sound. Good size and shape, leaves me good amount of cargo space in my SUV. Easy to install.

Cons: No Protective Grill. If your putting it in the car trunk as opposed to SUV, you may have space issues.

Awesome Combo

DP from Kodiak, AK on 1/13/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I love my car now, I just want to drive just here the music and the bass.

Pros: Good control of power with the settings and adjustments.

Cons: If your radio has a subwoofer power adjustment do not need the remote knob it comes with , to late I already install it.

Pros: Great sound for the size and wattage.

Cons: Needs a protective grill.

Product Research

Overview: The SubStation PECVR12 is a ported enclosure that houses a 12" Kicker Comp VR subwoofer and a built-in class-D amplifier, outputting 400 watts RMS @ 14.4 volts.

Cone Design: The Comp VR's super-rigid injection-molded polypropylene cone features 360-degree back bracing to completely eliminate flex and distortion.

Surround: The optimized ribbed Santoprene surround allows extended cone excursion for additional bass output and higher SPL. The surround is stitched to the cone to add a mechanical fastener to the chemical adhesives. This prevents the cone and surround from separating in the harshest conditions.

Spiralead Tinsel Leads: The Comp VR features durable Spiralead tinsel leads, which are woven into the woofer's progressive-roll polycotton spider, for added strength and reliability.

Basket and Motor Assembly: The strong steel basket features perimeter venting to help cool the high-temperature voice coil wires and prevent breakdown. The overall motor structure design is based on technology found in Kicker's flagship Solo-Baric line of subwoofers, and allows the sub to handle more power and take more abuse. The high-mass solid pole piece removes potentially damaging heat.

Signal Input: The included signal input harness can be used with a speaker level or line level signal. The 10" harness is terminated with female RCA jacks (when using a speaker level input, the RCA jacks are cut off).

Low Pass Crossover: The amplifier's low pass crossover point is continuously variable from 50 to 200 Hz; the crossover slope is 12 dB per octave.

Subsonic Filter: In addition to the low pass crossover, the PECVR12 features a 24 dB/octave subsonic filter fixed at 25 Hz. Ultra-low frequencies that cannot be reproduced by a subwoofer do not become sound, but unnecessary oscillations that cause distortion. These frequencies also waste amplifier power and can damage the speaker. The built-in subsonic filter removes the frequencies below 25 Hz to improve the sound quality by eliminating harmful distortion.

Bass Boost: The bass boost circuit provides a variable (0-18 dB) signal boost centered at 40 Hz.

Status Indicator Light: There is a status indicator LED on the control panel on the left side of the enclosure; it lights Blue to indicate that the amplifier is turned on and operating normally and lights Red to indicate the amplifier's protection circuitry has been activated.

Remote Bass Level Control: The included remote bass level control lets you adjust the output level of the amplifier from anywhere in the vehicle. A 20' cable is included and when it's plugged in, the gain control on the side of the enclosure is bypassed. The remote bass level control can be mounted under the dash with the included mounting hardware, it has the following dimensions:

  • Width: 2.215"
  • Height: 1.193"
  • Depth: 1.718" (3.076" including the knob and cable)

Controls: All the PH12's controls and connections are located on the left side:

  • Auto Turn-On: three position switch; choose Remote (amp turns on when +12 volts is applied to the remote turn-on wire), DC Offset (amp turns on when a 6 volt surge is detected from a speaker-level source on the signal inputs; in this mode the amp's remote turn-on wire acts as a +12 volt output to turn on another component), or Signal Sense (the amp turns on when an incoming audio signal is detected; in this mode the amp's remote terminal acts as a +12 volt output to turn on another component)
  • Phase: two position switch, the sub's phase can be easily inverted; 0° or 180°
  • Input Level: two position switch; choose Hi when using a speaker level input, Lo when using a line level input
  • Gain: rotary knob; continuously variable from 125mV to 5V when the Input Level switch is set to Lo, 250mV-10V when the Input Level switch is set to Hi
  • X-Over Frequency: rotary knob; set the low pass x-over point; continuously variable from 50 Hz to 200 Hz
  • Bass Boost: rotary knob; continuously variable from 0 to +18 dB

  • Remote Bass: 3.5mm mini-jack for use with the included remote bass level control
  • Fuses: two 15 amp ATO style fuses protect the amplifier
  • Signal Input: quick-connect jack for use with the included signal input harness
  • Power: quick-connect jack for use with the included power/ground/remote power plug:
    • Power: set screw terminal, up to 4 gauge wire
    • Ground: set screw terminal, up to 4 gauge wire
    • Remote: set screw terminal, up to 8 gauge wire
