It's time for an upgrade

Upgrading the old factory speakers in your car will give you a huge bump in sound quality, and Kicker designed CS Series speakers to get your sound system rockin' without breaking the bank. You'll enjoy your music even more when you hear all the details that your muddy-sounding factory speakers couldn't begin to reproduce.

Built tough

Kicker's 40CS654 speaker set provides low-end from a tough 6-1/2" polypropylene woofer, with a polyester foam surround that will stay strong for years to come. Bass sounds terrible. I'll be replacing these soon.

Pros: None

Cons: Bass doesn't sound sound good at all with the factory radio. Sounds like one speaker woofer is hitting the tweeter. I haven't had this problem with other brands like Pioneer or Sony.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sound Great!! I replace the factory 5.25's in the sound bar of my 2002 Jeep Wrangler. These 6.5's fit right in the existing hole. I first mounted the speakers only by using the 4 existing screw holes. Then I drilled 4 new opposing holes to install the provide grill. I added some poly fill to the sound bar and I am feeding each of them with 50 watts RMS from my Kenwood KAC-M3004 Compact 4-channel amplifier. Bought another pair and gave my sons 1999 Wrangler the exact same treatment.

Pros: Great Price Sound Great Look Great

Cons: None No regrets

These speakers are great when they aren't blown but they break so easily I have a chevy Silverado with a stock radio and it blew two of the four speakers that I got. I didn't even have the bass all the way up or the volume over a quarter of full volume.

Very impressed with the sound of these speaker. Several weeks earlier I installed some Kenwoods in another vehicle and was very pleased, but the Kickers were on sale so I tried them. Good decision as these sounded even better than the Kenwoods, but to be fair to Kenwood, these were slightly more expensive.

Pros: Good, clean bass for a speaker of this size, very clear mid and high range.

Bought with Blaupunkt New Jersey 220 BT - they sound great - bought 4 for the car. I don't blast but i do listen to some songs loud and they can handle. Decent price - overall pleased and way better than stock. Considered buying small amp but none was needed. I used with stock stereo and sound was tinny, installed the NJ220 and tuned it - sounds good now. Its not a blaster stereo. Once i figured out how to mount the speakers to the car - Installation was easy and quick using the scosche adapters. Paid a little over $200 for stereo and speakers so I think it sounds good for the price. Bought for daughters Kia Spectra EX 2008.

Pros: great price - good sound

Cons: none yet

This is an awsome pair of speakers! Really was just surprised as soon as I opened the box. First they look great, but also they just sound awsome, gooooood solid bass, very good mids and crisp highs! I mean you can find most likely better sounding speakers, no doubt, but for this price they are to good!! I bought a 6.5" pair for my front doors, now will most definitely buy another pair for the rear. Ooh and also don't have them mounted to an amp, they are straight to the receiver (Pioneer MVH-X390BT)

Pros: Good sound, look good

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For a lower priced speaker I'm impressed with the quality of the Kicker 40cs654. They are a nice upgrade over the stock speakers in my Avalanche, and the mounting hardware for the front worked fine but a little loose. on the stock GM bracket there was some thick rubber foam that I transferred to the new bracket and that took care of that. For the back speakers the new bracket was not even close to working but the stock GM bracket worked perfect for the new speakers everything lined up. I just added a 5 channel amp and 2 10in sub's to the truck and set the speakers output to HPF to block the low base to them and they sound great.

Pros: 1. Great price 2. Sound good

Cons: Have not found one

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought the Kicker speakers for the 2nd row seats of a 2011 GMC Yukon Denali w/ the factory Bose system. I went with these due to the high number of positive recommendations from other customers and the great price/value. Installation was pretty easy, hardest part is taking the door apart, but the speakers went in really easy with the FREE adapter plate that Crutchfield provided. I am very pleased with the end result which is cleaner, crisper, more dynamic sound in the vehicle. I will definitely consider Kicker speakers as replacements going forward. Very happy!

Iv always been into kicker. Just love how smooth they sounds at every frequency and they are hard to blow. I just replaced my pioneer for kicker and way much better. I'll always recommend kicker with confidence.

Pros: I love the material they use and the stitching. Very good quality just looking at them. Good sound response and clarity. Nice that they carry products for every type of budget.

Cons: Don't really have any cons except the price on some of the higher end equipment. You get what you pay for though.

When I pulled up to pick up my car (02 325ci) the doors were open while dud was installing my 2 rear & 2 door speakers. I thought all 4 were in from the sound, but it was just the front doors..! Instead of going with Kickers all around, I went with 2 JVC's for the front since I was replacing the stock radio with a JVC. My guy put the Kickers in the door because they sound better insulated, and the JVC's on the rear deck. Well, I'm purchasing another 2 Kickers to go in the rear, and a amp just for a little more thump. You cant beat the price or quality, trust me...nice upgrade from the stock without spending a fortune..(under $800 for 6 speakers, head unit, & amp with installation..)

Pros: Quick delivery, the little things included that installers get you for are included already, and of course... PRICES!!!!

Cons: I should have done this 2 years ago..!

2006 Toyota Tundra
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Didn't realize how bad the factory speakers on my 2006 Tundra had deteriorated/rotted out (no wonder they sounded so bad lately). Crutchfield advisor recommended these speakers. I am running off a Blaupunkt head unit also recently installed, no amp. The native 22 watts RMS drive these very well and the sound is awesome. Maybe a tab bright on the tweeters but I expect a few hours of playing them in and they will settle down. The best part is the price!

Pros: Great sound, sensitive enough to be driven well from head unit in no outboard amp set ups.

Cons: Installation kit for my 2006 Tundra was not a great fit. Had to drill extra holes and get creative to get it all to work.

I installed these in my 2005 GMC Sierra (front doors) I had little hope in these for a decent sounding speaker....BOY WAS I WRONG! The bass is decent (more than I expected) and they highs and mids are crystal clear! The Crutchfield advisors once again were terrific, as i have come to expect, and why it is such a pleasure to do business with them. I plan to replace the rear door speakers with these as well...and to replace the speakers in my wife's Tahoe with the same.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers work very well and are Much better over stock. They were very easy to install and instructions that came with from Crutchfield were likewise very easy to follow. The clips to connect to the factory system was perfect and made installation a breeze. So why only 3 stars? I'm giving Crutchfield 3 stars for two reasons. 1) I didn't know that the stock speakers on my 2015 Ram 1500 single cab were 6x9s. The website said the 6.5" speakers were a direct fit for my truck (I used the "find my vehicle" thingy to search for replacement speakers). Nothing suggested showed 6x9, I guess I should have questioned why the Kicker speakers needed an adapter, but oh well. 2) Crutchfield doesn't sell the PS series Kicker speaker in 6.5".

Pros: Easy install Sound is major improvement over stock

Cons: N/A

Crutchfield response on 1/31/2017 Our OutfitMyCar application concentrates on what speakers fit from what we carry. It doesn't always comply with the factory sizing in a particular vehicle. In this case, the size restrictions in the factory locations don't allow any of our 6x9" speakers to fit, which is why Bill didn't see any listed for his Ram. The other sizes fit with the brackets we offer for the stock 6x9" locations.

I can't express how much I don't like these speakers in the front doors of my RAM truck. Converting from 6X9 factory size was a bad recommendation from Crutchfield. I should have went with my gut and stuck with the 6x9 kickers. the bass sounds like a plastic box as a result of the conversion kit.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I went to a local big box electronics place to listen to these compared to Alpine, Pioneer, and JBL of the same class and cost and they sounded the most tonally accurate to me. The tweeters are a bit bright but once they are installed in the door and are typically off axis they argent so bad. I used these as rear fill speakers for the kid in out 2014 Sienna van and they were the only 6.5" coaxial speaker that was shallow enough to fit between the panel and the vehicle frame. Powering them with the Pioneer AVH5800BHS deck power of about 14 watts RMS and they are mounted infinite baffle so bass response inst there below 100 Hz but that is what a subwoofer is for.

Pros: Sound nice for this price range

Cons: When I was comparing them and added an amplifier to them they actually sounded worse to me? Kind of thought that was weird!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought 2 sets of these for my Jeep Wrangler JK. The install was fairly straightforward. The sound from these speakers is more clear and louder than the factory set, but there are absolutely no lows being put out from them. It is mid-range and treble all the way. With 4 of them surrounding you, it's too much. If not for the sub behind the back seat, it'd be unbearable. The factory paper speakers produced better mid-low range sound. Maybe it's because they haven't been broken in yet.... Maybe it's the factory head unit.... Or maybe these speakers just aren't that great.

Pros: Appearance, mounting depth

Cons: No mid-low range. All treble.

I absolutely LOVE these speakers. I had them in all 4 doors of my Colorado pickup, and they sounded killer. Plenty of bass and super crisp sounding. I bought a 2000 Forester, and if you know subarus, you know the stock speakers are garbage (especially from that era). I upgraded the front door speakers to a set of Pioneer 3-ways that were about the same price as these kickers, and was completely disappointed. So I immediately ordered a set of these to try in it, and WOW. I can't believe I even thought about going with other speakers. I guess I just wanted to see what was out there as options. BELIEVE ME when I say that for this price range, these speakers can NOT be beat!

Overall not impressed with these speakers. Had a pair of Kicker 6x9's in my old car and loved them.Compared these speakers side by side with the stock speakers on my 03 accord and the stock speakers had a better range of lows. The only positive about these speakers is that they allow music to be played at high volume without getting distorted, so I guess you could say they are just "loud". I would return them but I already went through the pain of taking my door panels apart once and I don't want to do it again. If you're looking at speakers that have a good range of lows don't buy these. Maybe they would sound better with an amp. Otherwise save your money and get a better speaker for a little more money.

Pros: They are loud

Cons: Not a wide range of lows. My stock speakers sound better The mounting brackets don't come with the hardware to mount them to the door

I installed these speakers in the front doors of a 2004 GMC Sierra 1500 after my factory speakers crapped out on me. They are a great improvement over the factory speakers. I figured while I'm replacing the fronts that I would replace the rears while I'm at it with the Kicker 40CS464s'. They are also a great improvement. I gave them a 4 rating because they are only installed for about a week now. The sound is crisp & clear plus I'm sure they will sound better after the burn in period. I feel that maybe I should have upgraded them with a pair of component speakers because I have the enhanced speaker set up (6 speaker system) with the tweeters separate.I'll update after they are burned in. I will have to get a sub because the bass isn't the best. (They are connected to a Kenwood head unit.) Bottom line: Very satisfied with them.

Pros: Crisp, clear sound

Cons: Not to great bass. Will need a sub woofer in the very near future.

I bought my Forester in desperate need of new speakers. The two back speakers were functional, but the two front speakers were blown. My car came with the base model stereo system which seems to have been pretty awful to begin with. Before I even got these speakers into the car I was impressed with them. They weigh about 5 times as much as my factory speakers. They have all metal frames, unlike the plastic ones that came out. They've been in the car for 2 months now, they sound absolutely fantastic. I have no subs or tweeters in my car and these speakers sound great across the whole spectrum. They can easily support the max volume on my head unit.

Pros: -Excellent quality across the whole spectrum -Feels well built overall

Cons: The wire connectors on the back are only supported on one side. The cable adapters were an extremely tight fit and it was hard to connect them without bending the supports for the terminals.

I had to replace the original speakers in my 2000 Tahoe. They were not blown but they were not great sounding either as far as 16 year old factory speakers were concerned. After upgrading the factory sub woofer (that were blown) it just made sense to upgrade the speakers. I heard good things about these Kickers when it came to price and performance but decided to replace just the front two speakers first. After listening to them I WILL be getting another set for the rear! I got a lot for my money. Note: Other retailers sell the exact same speakers for the exact same amount of money. However Crutchfield throw in free installation hardware as well. It's a no brainer. Crutchfield got this one hands down.

I purchased these speakers to replace a blown left rear speaker and upgrade. The Kickers were well made, and I did not need any of the adapter kit parts except for eight common self-tapping screws. The Kickers had flanges that mounted directly into my OEM holders, with great help from the documentation. I was also able to effectively use the short cables with the Kickers to adapt the wiring directly to my Volvo holders with only 4 solder connections. The result uses the original Volvo cables and plugs, and sounds great with much better bass response than before. This made me very happy!

Pros: Very easy work to retrofit into existing Volvo rear door speaker holders, all results are compatible with existing wiring and fit and sound great.

Cons: I could have done the work without the adapter kit, but it was better to have it available just in case.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers are really amazing over the stock units that came in my 2013 Jeep Wrangler. Fairly easy install. I recommend doing a google search and watching one of the many video demonstrations for how this should be done. The sound bar replacement is a piece of cake. The dashboard is a bit more complicated. The Crutchfield instructions call for nearly a complicated full removal of the dashboard, which is absolutely not necessary. This install is much easier once you watch a few of the videos for how to remove the speaker boxes and re-use the gasket mount from the factory speaker. As others have mentioned, fill the boxes with a small amount of polyfil and you're going to be incredibly pleased with the sound. The difference is night and day.

Pros: Crisp sound. Much improved Bass. Beautiful Mids. Fairly easy Install.

Cons: Range of Bass is slightly limited, but still a vast improvement over stock. A lot of people add a separate sub and/or amp, which I have not done yet.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After seeing how many reviews/how popular this product I really wanted to see for myself how these speakers sound. I went to Best Buy and saw these connected to a Pioneer deck (which I have). Out of all the 6.5" coxial speakers on display, which included Pioneer TS-A1675R, Alpine Type-S, and all other popular speakers within the price range.. the Kicker 40CS654 were the only speakers to handle adding bass boost even up to +6 on almost full volume! All the other speakers would distort after +2 bass boost, which really impressed me. After that experience, I decided to purchase them. I first purchased them on July 31st and the projected eta was Aug 4th. On Aug 1st, the UPS label was created.. but was stuck there and the package was not scanned.. on Aug 4th, the speakers were not delivered. I contacted Crutchfield customer service on Aug 5th telling them my situation and the associate gave me a new order with free overnight shipping.. which the next business day will be Aug 8th. That is so awesome of them! UPS label was created within the next hour, scanned, and delivered on Aug 8th. The old order is still in "created label"... Guess they never received it. I have a Pioneer DEH-X5800HD with no amp. These speakers sound great paired with them! I know they have to "break in" but they put out more bass than my Rockford Fosgate Prime R165X3's which they replaced. I will definitely put have another pair for the my rear deck. The tweeters are a bit harsh if

Pros: Good clarity, great bass (even with bass boost), great price, shallow size, and quality build. I know for sure these will sound very nice powered by an amp. I will most likely purchase an Alpine KTP-445U to power these bad boys.

Cons: Didn't buy these speakers to begin with.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm very happy with this purchase. When paired with a powerful amp, these guys thump. The highs are crisp and the kick is powerful. The only area lacking would be in the lower bass. So there is definitely room for adding a sub in the mix. But if you are just looking for good sounding speakers to replace your factory set, this is a great way to go. Even when I've cranked the stereo, these speakers keep up. I'm constantly surprised how much power these guys can push. They really THUMP!

Pros: Great range of power. Can run directly off the OEM head unit, an aftermarket head unit or (to really release their full potential) a nice amp. Lots of head room so crank it up and enjoy the sound with the windows down.

Cons: Not as full range as I had hoped. The bass can be a bit weak. Requires really pushing the lower end of the EQ. I will probably be adding a sub to my setup sometime soon.

Connected to a Kenwood KDC-695 replacing the rear speakers only (so far). These speakers give amazing high range ( I had to lower the gain from +5 to +2) and decent mid range response! I am still tweeking the frequencies to get the illusive mid-bass I like to hear (more hopefully on that later.)

Pros: GREAT value for the money- especially with the (free) mounting braket and stock speaker wire harness adapter.

Cons: I haven't had the volume high enough long enough to see if they would 'break'. But Nothing bad to say so far.

I needed to replace the 22 year old factory cassette head unit in my work truck and figured while I was in there I might as well replace everything else. It was fairly easy to do following the included instructions. They are drilled for several mounting options, one door fit perfect on the first try the other I needed to try about every angle I could to get the holes to match up. User error but a strange problem considering the first side worked so well. They sound decent good clean highs the low end needs work but I am too lazy to put in a sub.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Fit and install was easy, it handles the factory power with ease, clean highs, punchy mid-high bass but like others, the cheap almost no magnet factory speaker had more low end bass. 4 of these to replace factory for mids and highs would be fine but then your going to need a sub woofer to replace the bass. Note: same speaker in 2 different vehicles gave a completely different bass response. car was poor and truck was great. it might be the head unit and other factors that gave this install a bad bass response.

Pros: Cheap, easy install, well built and will prob outlast the car.

Cons: No low bass

2000 GMC Sierra 1500

Just installed these in my 2000 GMC Sierra 1500. They fit perfect and have great sound, especially some good bass. I compared these to other 6.5's in a big box store, and for the price, these were best. The only mod I had to make was the mounting screws provided were way too long. They kept me from being able to snap in the bracket. Luckily I had some extra smaller screws sitting around that I could use.

Pros: Thump

Cons: Not 3-way

Pros: Good sound Great price

Cons: Low on bass, but I suspect that it is due to low output from factory head unit.

Should be in its own class

Bruce from Fairfax, VA on 3/21/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Ok, let me start by saying that this is not a high end speaker. Now let me continue by saying that it is a pretty good speaker, in fact, one that offers something that many (most) 6.5" high end speakers don't offer---acceptable mid-bass. I've read lots of reviews. Everyone gushes over the Focals and JLs adding that they will be fine when a sub is added (which it will, at this level of audio). Enter the Kicker CS coaxial speaker. It is a little powerhouse capable of filling out the mid-bass of non-subwoofer systems so they sound pretty darn good. I even read a Crutchfield review of the JL Evolution series speaker that noted the bass was a little weak but rescued by the Kicker CS in the rear doors. Having read this, and having heard the CS compared with the KS and other brands locally, my ears told me that this speaker somehow offers something special that the higher end speakers are not. Right off the bat it plays lower frequencies (down to 35 or 40 Hz) with a rigid cone that produces a tighter, more aggressive bass response. Its tweeters are bright, easy to distinguish above the bass, which is perfect for coaxials in the rear doors, but maybe a bit too bright to have blasting from the dash (in the CSS component speakers)...but it does the mid-bass so nicely that I am considering it for the front. VERDICT - The CS should be the first in a new class of speaker that I will call the "Mid-Sub Rear Door (MSRD)" speaker. No other speaker does what it does.

Pros: Durable quality construction, tight sound, probably the best mid-bass in its class

Cons: tweeters a tad bright for the silk-dome crowd

I replaced 2 out of 4 speakers on my Jeep XJ after one not working upfront...it was the wire that was bad but for this price i wanted to try two new ones....one on drivers side front and one on the rear...i know i know i should all match, but after doing some trials, they all sounded the same...i cannot tell which is stock or Kicker now...so i left the two stock ones alone...

Pros: Probably last longer that the stokers as seems good quality, easy fit...matches stock location on my 2000 Jeep XJ

Cons: Not any better than the 2000 jeep speakers....

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I used these to replace the factory speakers in my Honda Accord and I couldn't be happier. They really bring out the mids and highs, although they're a little lacking on bass - to be expected from speakers this size. I will say that the bass they do produce is very clean with no distortion or humming that you typically get from cheaper speakers. As always, Crutchfield is on point with their installation materials and instructions, install went as smoothly as possible. I'd highly recommend these for anyone looking to build a sound system, they're a huge upgrade over most factory speakers, and will really shine when paired with subwoofers.

Pros: Great clarity on the highs and mids

Cons: Lacking on the low end, but the bass they do produce sounds very clean

I have been looking for replacement speakers for my 2003 Escalade for sometime now. The Bose factory system sounded really good, but the speakers were 1-way and they were 13 years old so it was time to replace them. These kicker CS series were perfect because I do a lot of studio mixing and mastering, and every sound engineer knows that you need a great reference system to compare your mixes to. I highly recommend the speakers if you are looking for a balanced frequency response across the audible spectrum!

I put these speakers in all 4 doors of a 2006 CR-V along with an Alpine head unit (Alpine CDE-152) and the inline Alpine 45X4 RMS amp (Alpine KTP-445A Power Pack) which fit in the dash behind the head unit. Highs are crisp and clean, as much as they can be as coax's behind door panels. However, when you turn on the "Bass Engine" on the head unit, you would swear there is a small sub hiding somewhere in the car. Very pleased with the overall package.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Ordered 2-pairs of these to replace the stock speakers in my '12 Silverado Crew Cab. I had been noticing that the stock speakers needed more volume to hear clearly as time went on. The installation was fairly simple, took between 2-3 hours to replace all four door speakers. It helped having the adapters and wiring harnesses included as they probably saved an hour over soldering and prepping the old speaker frames to accept the new Kickers. About the sound - these kickers are clearer and louder than stock by a pretty wide margin. I ran two of these in the back doors so I could compare against the stock speakers in the front doors and one thing really stood out - the bass. These Kickers don't have the deep, muddy bass that the stock speakers have. But the mid and high-range clarity that you gain in it's place makes up for it and that's what I really needed so that I could hear my music over the road noise. Crutchfield was great - quick, free shipping and lots of extras (plus instructions.) Nice deal. But I did order scratch and dents and one speaker cone was cracked. Sealed it up with some clear nail polish and it seems fine that way.

Pros: Clarity, mid-range and dB sensitivity.

Cons: A little short on the bass side.

So first off I just want to say that these speakers sound amazing, I am running them on my alpine head unit and nothing more and they give out clear sound all around and booming bass when I want it. I installed these in all 4 doors on my Toyota Tundra double cab (even though according to crutchfield they wouldn't fit in the front doors). It did take a little monkeying with the bracket to make it fit in the front (I believe if I had ordered the 6 3/4" size it would've fit in a lot easier) but in all it was a very easy install and I would definitely recommend them to anyone who cares about the sound in their car/truck.

The speakers definitely do what they are designed to do. They are a small cone size to begin with so don't expect amazing mid-range punch. However, the woofer working with the integrated tweeter produces an overall very good sound quality in the mid-high range. Excellent clarity and very crisp sound. I installed these to replace factory BOSE speakers in a cadillac SRX. So even over a premium factory sound system it was an improvement. And these things are cheap too so its a win win. I am very satisfied. My only disappointment with the product is that it did not come with a Kicker sticker which I think looks really cool.

I was a little disappointed at first because there was way too much ear-piercing treble. I adjusted the EQ to where it was tolerable. But that's not where the story ends. The factory unit only put out about 8 to 10 watts per channel. For a graduation gift I decided I would install a premium stereo in her car, two pairs of these Kickers, along with a sub and amp. I installed a Pioneer 80PRS head unit, these speakers, a 12" Digital Designs sub, and a 5-channel JBL amp pushing 75 WPC on these, and 350 watts on the sub. After installing the HU and amp these speakers came to life! They sound absolutely amazing! As clear as can be in 60 hertz range and up. These speakers can handle power flawlessly, and sound extremely good doing it. The point is, if your just replacing factory speakers, these speakers may or may not be what your looking for. If your looking to add to your stereo later, these speakers will most definitely fit the bill. With the low power that most factory units put out these won't "wow" you, but if you add a little power they will.

Pros: Clean sound, good staging, and excellent power handling.

Cons: Don't really sound very good with a low wattage head unit.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought these speakers to replace the factory front door speakers on my 2008 Trailblazer SS Bose with Nav. I installed the the drivers side speaker, then tested it. The passenger, factory speaker was much louder at a given volume, and the sound was much better. Called Crutchfield support was told that Bose has some kind of crossover filter that blocks high frequencies, preventing the Kicker (2-way) speaker from getting the full range of sound. Also, the Kicker speaker requires much more power than the factory speaker, so at any volume the factory speaker sounded louder. I bought both the front and rear Kickers, but was told by the sales person not to replace the factory tweeters in the dash. Because the kicker speaker takes more power, the tweeter is blasting you out when you turn up the volume. Bottom line, these speaker would not work with the rest of my factory components. The sales person should have known that, and directed me to other products. I returned them.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After doing the research I decided to order speakers from Crutchfield rather than get the same kickers from an ebay source, because I thought the extra accessories would be helpful, and they were. The package arrived literally the next afternoon, less than 48 hours. I bought the foam speaker enclosures and cut an inch diameter hole in the back of them for the wire to go through and "breathing" air for the speaker. When clamping the foam into the OEM replacement plastic clip-ons it's a tight fit but the idea is to not have something in the door buzz... which would drive me crazy. Others have discussed the bass response as lacking but I found the bass from my stock head unit set to "jazz" was more distinct, not louder but "better" than the OEM speakers. Which were both broken lol. Look at your OEM speaker, it weighs half of what these kickers weigh, with cheap paper cone and flimsy foam surround, it's a wonder they lasted this long. Now it sounds like I'm standing next to a drum kit when Phil hits the toms. I only replaced the door speakers, and now due to some serious turning up the volume the back door speakers are crackling and I'll probably have to replace those also since they are ruining the sound from the new speakers.

Pros: Installing the speaker is easier than removing the door panel.

Cons: The instructions were a little lacking, but I figured it out intuitively. At first it appeared there were no screws to attach the speaker to the supplied plastic snap-in bezel. I bought some nuts and bolts from the hardware store, then discovered the screws were in the plastic wrap of the second speaker I had not completely unwrapped yet. For this installation you don't use the grill cover that comes with the speaker.

I decided to try to replace the old cracked speakers in my 2002 Tahoe myself after getting a bid for $850 from a local shop. I'm not very handy and figured I'd end up taking a big mess to an installer to finish after attempting to do it myself. These Kicker speakers fit perfectly without any retrofitting and sound fantastic. The only challenging part was removing all the interior panels necessary to access the speakers. Crutchfield's instructions were very specific and made it doable. Even for me. Installing 4 speakers and a subwoofer took me about 5 hours but I did it and it sounds vastly better than the factory speakers ever did.

Pros: Fit perfectly and easily with no drilling, cutting or retrofitting. Just screwed and plugged right in. Sound fantastic. Great directions.

Great factory upgrade on a 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 Quad Cab

AKJeeper from Kodiak, Alaska on 12/22/2015

2006 Dodge Ram 1500
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers did exactly what I hoped they would do - clean up the sound from my factory stereo, and utilize it to the fullest potential. I upgraded the front door speakers on my truck ('06 Ram Quad Cab) first, with the 6x9 version of these speakers. If I were to do it again, I'd replace all 4 speakers at the same time. These 6.5" speakers fit in the factory opening in the door, but I had to drill some holes as the factory screw locations did not match these new speakers. Another note - my truck was wired with the rear speakers out of phase with the front, so I had to swap the polarity on the rear speaker wires. A pretty common thing to happen on the 02-08 Rams, I hear. I elected to swap the polarity on the Crutchfield-supplied speaker wire adapters, as that was much easier to access and modify than the wiring in the door pillars. As for the sound of these speakers - the high notes are a little bright with the factory stereo, just like with the 6x9s. I suspect the factory stereo uses an exaggerated treble curve to compensate for the factory paper woofer's lack of high frequency response. The sound from these speakers are what you can expect out of a 6.5" speaker - not very deep bass, but the bass that's there is clear and tight. Mid tones are great, too. Not muddy at all. These speakers complement the 6x9s up front very well. Good balanced sound and it no longer feels like you've got cotton in your ears with these speakers. I was amazed at the difference!

Pros: Great clear sound for the money. Makes good use of the factory stereo's power output. Crisp highs, clear mid tones, tight mid-bass. Crutchfield supplies wire adapters to fit the factory wiring. Would sound even better with a good aftermarket deck - a great incremental upgrade for those of us who have to upgrade in stages.

Cons: Had to drill holes to mount in my '06 Ram's rear doors - not a big deal in my opinion. The sound out of these speakers was so good that I finally realized that my truck had the rear speakers wired out-of-phase from the front. Once switched, all 4 speakers worked together instead against each other. Odd, because I never noticed the out-of-phase problem with the factory speakers - probably because I couldn't hear them very well.

It came with adapters so you just had to plug it in. The installation only took an hour to do all 4 speakers including taking the door panels off.

Pros: The sound is very crisp and the bass is pretty good with my stock headunit. It would be a lot better if I had a new headunit.

Cons: None at this time.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Kicker 40CS654 speakers sounds very good. They beat the factory speakers hands-down and came with the wires that hooked into the factory connector. They are not going to thump, but I can feel the base. These were factory replacements in my 2004 C240 which is going to my daughter. I was disappointed in the free mounting brackets (Crutchfield) as I was forced to drill holes to get them to line up with the mounts in the doors, but it was possible without too much trouble and... they were free. Note: I have separate tweeters in the doors. These definitely do the job of upgrading the factory speakers on a budget. Also please note that I am not an audiophile, if I was, my budget would have been 10x.

Pros: Price... seriously, if you pay any less, you're going to get a tin can.

Cons: Don't expect to feel the bass in your chest.. but they can rattle the sunglasses in the map pocket.

Got these hooked up to a 60RMS x 4 for 240 RMS full. I Listen to hip hop. That's about it. No bass. Absolutely none. I had a pair of Alpines2 a JVC DVD player. They hit bass like subwoofers. Mid played perfect. Highs just as good as the subs. I'm not really sure what these Kickers are. The paper door speakers advertised as 15W 4 ohms had better base. There wasn't much but it did sound better. The highs not so much. These Kickers sound like there's a fork in them. All of the rave reviews leave me to question. I only purchased them because of the reviews. I would've spent more for Alpines. I'm disappointed.

I was going to give these 4 stars, because they didn't quite live up to my expectations. I was hoping to get a little more bass out of them, but honestly my expectations were a little high, and misguided, especially for the little amount of money I was spending for these speakers. They really are a good bang for your buck. I've had them installed for a week now to replace my stock speakers in my 2000 Tacoma. Obviously the sound quality is significantly improved, and if I want that "bump" I was initially hoping for I can just add a little sub in the mix and be good to go. Very happy with my purchase.

Good choice if you're trying to do a cheap upgrade as I was. The Kickers provide more clarity than my factory speakers especially in the higher ranges. They do provide less bass than I was expecting but I don't have an amp hooked to them (yet), I'm using an aftermarket pioneer receiver. Overall a pretty good value for the price. The instructions provided with the free brackets were slightly confusing and it turns out I did not need them, the quick connect adapters were nice though.

Pros: Cheap, decent sound.

Cons: Less bass than expected.

Kicker 40CS654 Install 2009 Jeep Wrangler with Infinity system

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Install went well, supplied brackets fit with minor modification. Previous posts were correct regarding these being a small 6.5 inch speaker. While lows are somewhat lacking, mid and highs are clearer than stock infinity speakers. The mix of stock in dash and the kickers in the roll bar area take away the muffled sound for the upper tonal ranges. Factory sub was replaced with a pioneer, which provided a thighter punch.

Pros: Clean sound, easy install. Bought on sale happy with the mix as noted above.

Cons: Lows lacking but might pick up a little with some more exercise.

Great speakers!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Worth the money. After my factory speakers in my Chevy hhr stopped working, I purchased these kicker speakers. Overall easy installation. Mids and highs sound great but lacking low end. Very crisp and clean sound. Would recommend if your looking for a wallet friendly upgrade of your factory speakers

Pros: Cost, crisp clean sound, easy installation

Cons: Bass is week. But with an amp I hear that makes a big difference.

'06 Highlander. Was it worth it? Things to consider.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A little background first. As a lifelong audiophile, I've been blessed with owning some of the finest audio components, both home and (factory) car systems, though this was my first stab at what was hopefully a quick upgrade for my Highlander (base). My gold standard in factory systems was the Mark Levinson system in my Lexus GS430, so my mark is admittedly high. My issue with the Toyota was the deplorable FM radio. CD's, pretty decent, and we all know the source makes a huge difference in most any system. In hindsight, I knew it was a sensitivity issue with the HU (and in Crutchfield's defense, that tech rep brought the issue up), but I could not find a reasonably priced HU that matched the look and button color scheme. Can't stand the obvious aftermarket look. The vehicle specific installation sheet was invaluable. Upon removing the door panels and speakers, I was surprised to find the factory speakers to be Pioneer. Polypropylene cones and respectable magnet weights. Overall weight difference between the OE and the new Kickers was negligible (even with the OE's being in a plastic basket molded enclosure). My gut was immediately saying this is probably not worth it. The brackets included were hit and miss. One fit using all three OE screws, the other needed one new screw drilled out. Bottom line; Little to no sound improvement. Not worth the money to replace the rears coax's. It's the HU. Moral of my story: see what you have first!

Pros: Appears to be a well made speaker.

Cons: Unless your factory speakers (base grade) are blown or truly pure junk, this project resulted in a near zero sonic improvement. This is not a diss on Kicker. Just make sure (in advance) you are upgrading a system component that is worth doing. In my case, speakers provided no silver bullet. Will continue to search for a new HD radio head unit that matches/complements my interior, without breaking the bank. Lesson learned.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great sound and easy to install. They were slightly bigger than the old speakers so none of the screw holes lined up. I just bought some self tapping screws with some washers that had rubber grommets attached to them to secure the speakers. Worked great and sound fantastic.

Pros: Great sound, Not expensive, easy to install

Cons: screw holes don't line up with factory setup.

Not the best out there obviously, but if you're replacing your stock speakers they are perfect. Perform way better, even with the stock head unit.

Pros: Great sound, adds more to a system then the stock stereo does

Cons: No problems, sounds great
