Overview

Our take on the Kicker 40CS684

Upgrading the old factory speakers in your car will give you a huge bump in sound quality, and Kicker designed CS Series speakers to get your sound system rockin' without breaking the bank. You'll enjoy your music even more when you hear all the details that your muddy-sounding factory speakers couldn't begin to reproduce.

Kicker 40CS684

It's time for an upgrade

Upgrading the old factory speakers in your car will give you a huge bump in sound quality, and Kicker designed CS Series speakers to get your sound system rockin' without breaking the bank. You'll enjoy your music even more when you hear all the details that your muddy-sounding factory speakers couldn't begin to reproduce.

Built tough

Kicker's 40CS684 speaker set provides low-end from a tough 6"x8" polypropylene woofer, with a polyester foam surround that will stay strong for years to come. The 1/2" PEI balanced dome tweeter takes care of the vocal and instrumental details that'll really bring your music to life. These speakers sound great powered by a factory radio or an aftermarket car stereo, and they'll really rock when connected to an external amplifier.

These speakers topped it off with the front speakers just the right amount of sound and bass behind me.

Went Bad Quick

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought 2 pair of these speakers with a head unit Dec. 2015. To install on a car I was building. Install them in Nov. 2016. Finish the car Feb 2017. System sounded fine at first. March 2017 System started sounding funny. Had somebody else listen and they said the same thing. Wasn't to happy. I don't drive this car much, so tried to deal with it. So a few other weekends took car out to drive around. Very disappointed in the sound. Tried playing with equalizer to get a better sound. Couldn't get it to sound right. Starter playing with the fade. That when I notice the drive door speaker had a crappy sound coming from it compared to the others. Seem that speaker didn't have any highs coming from it. So I have a new system with a bad speaker. So only really got maybe 2 days out of the speaker before went bad. Sucks I waited so long to put them in. Waste of money. Would not recommend.

Pros: They fit.

Cons: Quality, longevity

These speakers fit perfectly in the front doors of my F250 truck. They had far less bass than the factory speakers but song lyrics were cleaner. Adding more power to them with an aftermarket deck and amp helped bring these alive.

Pros: Price, Installation

the speakers sound beautiful, however the base could be better. I'm actually thinking of installing a sub-woofer.My truck didn't come with up-graded sound, so it looks like a possibility. Crutchfield supplies the harnesses and install sheet which made the install a snap. would definitely recommend them! Don't hesitate, just do it!

Replaced front door speakers in my 2010 Ford Fusion with factory Sony system. Factory speakers weren't bad but they were just woofers. Not enough clarity for me. These kickers made a bid difference. Much more clarity and more bass. I can hear more instruments now. Easy replacement with wire adapter that was included. Less than an hour job. Highly Recommended.

Replaced all four speakers in a standard cab F-150. The factory speakers were 20 years old, and had completely turned to dust. These KICKER 6x8's fit perfectly, nice & easy install. And they sound excellent connected to a PIONEER DEH-150MP. Hard to believe that such an inexpensive set of speakers could sound so good, but they do!!!

Speakers were as advertised. Relatively easy for me to install in my 2014 F150 crew cab. I replaced my factory speakers with these Kickers and the sound is much better. I just wanted a quality speaker instead of the factory garbage and this worked perfectly. For my money, this was worth it.

1. Crutchfield service: Master Sheet, complimentary wiring kits for my make/model, fast shipping, great materials. 2. Lots of 6x8s to choose from - these base level Kickers don't disappoint. Significant increase in sound quality, punchy bass and more defined mids and highs. Clear at higher volumes.

Pros: Install as easy as stated, very affordable improvement to stock sounds.

Cons: Bass level, always leaves you curious for what higher rates speakers sound like.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently acquired an 02 Ford f150, and the music was well pretty dull. I don't really have much experience in car audio, but had some kicker subs, and really liked the quality so I bought these. They were direct bolt ons, and with the connector provided made the swap easy. It seem like night and day now. Only issue I had with the speakers is the sealant they use to bond the rubber was messy and excessive. Most speakers I've purchased looked cleaner without the excessive adhesive.

Pros: Good sound quality

Cons: Excessive adhesive around cone. Don't have a clean look finish

Make sure you have an amp! My three-star rating is only due to the fact that Crutchfield advised me to get these speakers knowing that my intent was to use my Kenwood DPX502BT head unit (22 w RMS) without a sub or an amp. At this power, there was zero bass response, and the paltry factory speakers had a fuller sound. I returned these for the lower wattage Pioneer 6x8s which sound better (though I'm still not completely satisfied).

Great speakers, expecially for the price! They were a massive improvement over the four factory speakers in my 2010 F150 XL Supercab. One thing of note... I lost a ton of bass with them on the factory stereo; it just didn't provide the output these speakers need. But I also purchased a different head unit when I bought these that was capable of pushing them.

Installed on a 2006 Mustang convertible. Plug and play design. Adapters for wires make install very easy. No soldering required. Completed install in about an hour for all four 6 X 8 speakers. I ordered two kits. I have an aftermarket head unit so the difference in quality was significant. The mids and high were much crisper and cleaner and I could turn up the volume without distorting the sound and rattling the doors. Worth the money and a must have if you're upgrading the stock head unit.

Pros: Plug and play install. Great sound improvement over stock utilizing aftermarket head unit.

2004 Ford F-150
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Direct fit in my F150. Easy to install. CLEAN sound. Handles 75 watts from MB Quart amp nicely. First had hooked to Fosgate amp and had hiss at 0 volume. Distortion at 3/4 volume. Fosgate amp had 1% THD. Bought MB Quart amp from Crutchfield (0.02% THD). Speakers were REALLY clean without distortion and went WAY louder. No hiss at 0 volume. GREAT mids and highs.

Pros: Clean. Great mid range. Great High range. Full sound. No distortion. Quite loud at 75 Watts each. 4 Ohms.

Cons: No bass (as you would expect). Had to use filter to remove bass. EQ would do as well. NOTE: I DIDNT EXPECT TO GET BASS from 6 X8's! Some users do but are disappointed. This is what SUBS are for. Really no cons. There are limits but clearly stated in specs. Observe power and freq limits and youll be happy. They are NOT really high end. BUT they work EXTREMELY well for the money, just make sure you use a clean amp.

Great mid tier speakers

Jonathan from Bismarck, ND on 7/1/2016

2011 Ford Fusion
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers really surprised me for mid tier speakers or at least that's how I would label them. Still running these off of factory head but the sound quality is still really good. Can't wait to put bass and a proper head in and see what these things can do. Would definitely recommend to friends and have done so. I've had these installed for close to 4 months now.

Pros: Was easy to install but most speakers are. sound range is awesome even on a factory head, would imagine it'll only get better in a proper setup Super cheap for the quality of sound and range you gain.

Very nice speakers and sound really well! No matter how much you turn that volume up or how high you turn the bass up, I haven't had it muffle the words at all and i like to play my music loud with a lot of different bass tones and sounds. I recommend buying these for price and sound quality you pretty much stealing them! They are perfect starter speakers!

Pros: Great sound quality, doesn't muffle sound, easy to put in, built very nice, sturdy speakers feel like they were built with craftsmanship, and doesn't seem like build quality is cheap for price!

Cons: Can't name a single con for these speakers!

Great speakers for the money

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought 2 pair of these speakers to replace the front and rear speakers in my Crown Victoria (Note to Crutchfield: Ford did make Crown Victoria's in 2010 and 2011). Currently using the factory head unit, but will be replacing that soon. The factory speakers were very muddy, with poor lows and only decent highs. The Kickers are fantastic. Well defined highs and mids with better lows than I expected from a 6x8 speaker. Well worth the money. Note for anyone else installing speakers in the stock front door location of a 2010/11 Crown Victoria/Grand Marquis. This data is not included in the Crutchfield speaker install steps as it appears that the front door speaker install procedure changed in the last 2-3 years of the panther chassis. The stock speaker has a hard plastic cover over it which is then screwed into a plastic adapter plate. The adapter plate is easy to remove. The hard plastic cover is part of the speaker and is not removable. The stock install does not use the standard 4 screw method. It only uses 3 screws, in non-standard locations. You will need to remove the adapter plate from the factory speaker and either find shorter screws for mounting to the new speaker or use nuts as spacers to make up for the depth of the hard plastic speaker cover. You can then use the 3 factory screws to attach the speaker/adapter plate to the door frame in the stock location.

Pros: Very good and clear highs and mids. Surprisingly good lows from such a small speaker.

Cons: None

Replaced the old factory speakers on the rear deck in my mustang. Nice highs, good low end sound. Ive got them run to a double din kenwood stero. They sound great up till about lvl 25 volume, then they start to get distorted. But thats better than the factory units. They are built like a mini subwoofer, so im sure they sound better when hooked to an amp. Good speakers for the price. Better ones are available, but your gonna pay more for those.

Pros: Good all around sound. Built tough.

Cons: Needs an amp to get the most out of them, but thats really not a con, just my problem lol.

I replaced the upgraded Sony system front speakers in my truck. When I took the old ones out I didn't think there would be much difference based on the look of the Sony speakers. Boy was I wrong the sound is so much better I get way more sound at a lot lower power output from the head unit. The install took 30 mins and the free wire connectors made it so easy. I am going to replace the back ones next. Totally worth it.

Pros: Great sound

Much better than the stock speakers

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Replaced the stock speakers (front and rear) in a 2006 F-150 SuperCrew. Perfect fit replacements. Much better than the stock speakers. Bass has more punch and is cleaner. Highs are actually present due to the separate tweeters (stock speakers have no tweeters). For the fronts, just pop the existing speaker cover panel off, replace the speakers (you have to fold up two speaker bracket tabs to get the new ones to fit), and replace the covers. Super easy. For the rears, follow the instructions provided by Crutchfield for removing the door panels but you don't actually have to disconnect the door lock cable. Just roll down the window and use a bungie to hold the panel up (looped around the top of the door frame) or have someone hold it up for a few minutes. No folding of mounting tabs required for rear speaker installation. Then re-install the door panel on the door. My 12-year old did much of the speaker installation work to help out - it isn't that difficult! Using the speaker wire adapters by Crutchfield made installation a snap. A friend listened to them after installation and immediately went to order the same speakers for his truck. I replaced the stock stereo with a Pioneer double-DIN unit a while back when the CD player died and it drives these just fine with no amp. Recommended!!!

I wanted to upgrade the factory speakers in my daily driver because let's face it, the 15 year old factory speakers had seen way better days. I bought two pairs of these Kickers and after the install (which was super simple) I was blown away by the clarity in sound. All my music sounds great (especially rock). I do agree with some of the other reviews about not enough bass, but hey, these are 6x8 mids, not subs. I do have an aftermarket JVC receiver (also from Crutchfield) and that also makes a huge difference. These are a great buy for anyone looking at upgrading their worn out speakers.

I purchased these speakers to replace factory rear door speakers in a Ford Fusion. I've powering them with a Sony WX-GT90BT head unit. Although I haven't personally heard a lot of other brand speakers in identical applications, I can't imagine how a 6 x 8 2 way speaker could sound better. I have the Kicker KS series component speakers in front doors clarity and imaging and these in the back doors to provide volume and bass. These speakers had everything I was looking for; full size 6 x 8, rated 75 watts, and polypropylene woofer. I am impressed with how much punch with speakers have with only 18 watts running to them. These Kickers are an Excellent replacement for factory speakers! I highly recommend them.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought these speakers as a replacement for the stock base speakers in my mustang. Every one in different forums said you would notice a huge difference in sound when replacing stock speakers with any aftermarket speaker. Not true for me, these sounded almost identical to my stocks. There not bad, just didn't notice a difference. Not sure if it's because I'm still running the stock stereo (more than likely) but honestly if you don't plan on changing out your stereo like me don't waste your money changing speakers. I might eventually add an amp to them to see if it makes a difference. I gave it a 3 star review because the speaker itself isn't bad but it isn't great. I honestly was expecting more when I turned the stereo on.

Pros: Easy installation, came with free speaker wire harness that made installation easy.

Cons: Did not notice a difference in sound from base speakers to these.

These were a vast improvement over the factory speakers in my F150. Great clarity and detail in the highs and mids. The bass response is very good considering they are 6x8's. I have them with a new JVC HU w/ 22watts RMS and it's plenty loud with overall great performance. The detail was so good it sounds almost close to having components but again consider I am coming from stock. I imagine these with a hidden small sub would a great setup for those looking for very good daily listening. The sub's next on the item list...

Pros: Clarity, detail, mid/bass response.

Pros: Excellent mid-range and upper range: vocals, horns, strings, chimes, etc. A lot of speaker for the money.

Cons: A little soft on bass but plenty good for me--I really don't need a lot of low end, I prefer mid- & upper range and these speakers have it. Had to bend a couple of tabs to fit the front doors but that was very minor.

Can't beat the price for what you get. Doesn't matter about the power you're running. Good for low or high power.

Pros: Easy to install. I have a 2006 Mazda 3.

Cons:

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Replaced the stock speakers in my 97 Ranger with these. Already had a Sony head unit but lived with the stock speakers for almost 2 years. What a difference in sound! Not much of an increase in bass but that could be deceiving because of the improvement in mid-range and treble. I hear sounds in my music that I never heard before, all without an amp. I choose these because of the reviews and I wasn't disappointed.

Pros: Great sound, easy install with the provided harness and vehicle specific instructions.

Cons: None.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Good improvement over stock speakers feel so much better build quality wise. First set ok Kicker speakers I've ever had an have to say I'm impressed. I still have the stock head unit but can still tell worlds of difference but could really benefit from more power via better head unit or 4-channel amp. With the power I'm getting I get zero distortion when cranked up over half way all in all I'm a satisfied customer.

Pros: Price, easy installation, good sound, good quality.

Cons: None as of yet.

Happy with the speakers

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought the speakers to replace it my Toyota Tacoma factory speakers and was very happy with the purchase. I paired it with a Pioneer AVH-X3600 BHS and they both worked great together. With the install instructions from Crutchfield, it took me about 4 hours to install since this was my first time. There might be better speakers out there, but these speakers sounded great. I would like to thank Chad for the recommendation.

Pros: good sound, and value.

Cons: Nothing to report.

The speakers looks good and they sound even better than they look. I replace the doors and the rear deck speakers and added tweeter on the windshield pillars. I also added a 10 inch sub in the truck with an Amp. The car sounds as good or better then the shaker system.

Pros: Sound

Cons: none

I paired these speakers with a new Pioneer Bluetooth receiver and haven't looked back. In fact, I've been amazed at the detail and clarity of the music (and phone calls) these speakers make. Cymbals crash and ring clearly, drums thunder like they should and I've even noticed hearing singers' breathing between lines. Awesome!

Pros: Full range of clear, fat sound which doesn't shrink or become muddled at high volume (they're about to blow the panels off my doors!).

Cons: "Cons"? I can't think of one.

Great quality sound for a fraction of the price!

Initially was a good speaker and replacement to my front stock 2011 mustang speakers. Fit well and the sound was better than stock. However, one month out of the warranty period the driver's side speaker begins to blow out. Decent, speaker overall, but if you take the risk, get an extended warranty.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

There are the stock replacements for my Expedition. Almost perfect drop in replacement. Had to bend 2 mounding tabs out of the way. No biggie. At first instal I was like "meh, better than stock" These Need break in time. Break in= playing at half volume for about a week to relax the suspension) Very stiff spiders. After about a week the sound warms up and the bass kicks in. Sounds great running off of my head unit. They are shaking my mirrors at 14watts. You want more? Throw a 50-100 watt amp on them (clean power= no clipping, and a highpass filter is a must for that much power) These are fine for stock replacement/entry level mids.

Pros: Sharp highs. Clear voice. Good midbass.

Cons: None yet.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Upgrading front doors of 2002 Ford F350 XLT with stock head unit. As compared to the stock speakers (which I left in back), these have bright tweeters, and tight bass. Stock appears to have better bass than these, but it is muddy. Honestly, stock speakers I could not hear ANY symbols...plop these units in and holy cow...there they are again!!! These may perform better at the low end with an upgraded head unit and an amp, but with stock head unit, don't expect huge improvements in bass. Overall, these speakers are clearly geared toward bright highs, and tight bass, but are lacking the mid-range...which can be OK, especially if you tend to boost those two ranges anyhow.

Pros: Clear tweeter, tight (albeit limited) bass, great price, perfect fit!

Cons: Limited Bass, tweeter little on the bright side, no midrange.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I found the whole process to be great, from ordering to install it was great and I called to make sure I had all the items. The connectors that where included fit perfectly along with the actual speakers. The kicker speakers I had ordered where perfect they sound amazing. It wasn't hard to install myself, because crutchfield sent me instruction on how to remove the door panels and they where easy to follow! Overall I had a great experience on buying my first speakers ever with this company.

Pros: Instructions, wiring harnesses came with speakers, fast shipping, great customer service.

Cons: None at all

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

01This is my first acquaintance with Kicker. I was told I would not be disappointed. I replaced the OEM ones on my 2012 Ford Fusion. I was shocked to see the ones that came with the car. Even though they worked decent, I was in the mood to spend money and get the most out of the XM and cd player. I have the bass and treble set at mid, and even then they just blow me out of the car. With the door speakers I can feel the air moving on my legs as I crank up Ms Turner and her Simply the Best. The bass and treble are outstanding and with this upgrade I am sure to knock my head on the steering wheel. I have no reason to default on the Kickers and will be very unhappy when I sell this car.

Pros: easy to install great bass and treble.

These speakers are very well balanced for 2 way speakers. The JVC head unit I am using to power them is more than adequate. The speaker wiring harness included was a perfect fit also. This is a very reasonably priced upgrade that sounds great. (At least to me) I'm sorry I waited this long to make this upgrade.

Pros: Price, sound quality, and ease of installation.

Cons: None at this time.
