The heavy steel basket cuts down on unwanted vibrations.

Kicker technology at work

Kicker's 40CWD122 12" subwoofer features a flex-resistant polypropylene cone for hard-hitting lows without distortion, while the ribbed foam surround promotes long excursion and helps to keep the cone on target. The sub's steel basket provides a reliable foundation for big bass, and its extensive venting ensures long-lasting performance that won't break down when the bass gets heavy.

Easy to add to nearly any setup

This sub handles up to 300 watts RMS to bring out the depth your music's been missing, and its dual 2-ohm voice coils give you more wiring options when setting up your system. This versatile sub works well in sealed or ported enclosures, and it's even suitable for free-air applications.

To drive this single subwoofer, we recommend a mono amplifier rated between 225 and 450 watts RMS at 4 ohms. For more information, please refer to our article on How to Match Subwoofers and Amplifiers.

Awesome sub for hatchbacks!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have a Honda Fit and normally a 10" sub would be able to deliver enough bass for trunks that are open to the cabin. I recently blew a 10" Kenwood sub I had because it was pushed to its limits in a small sealed enclosure. I had a 12" ported enclosure lying around that I got for free so I decided to get this sub to slap onto it. I read a lot of reviews of different subs and ended up picking this one because of the price, the flexibility of the dual voice coils, and I had always planned to try Kicker out for myself. I'd have to say this is an awesome sub for it's price range! I have a 1000W Kenwood amp powering it and it's more than enough bass for my car-- you can feel the bass in your chest and throat. It won't rock the cars next to you but, to me, that's a good thing because it doesn't disturb anyone even though it's a party in your car, haha. I gave it 4 stars for build quality only because there's a little excess glue drip on the cone but nothing drastic. I'd totally recommend it for anyone who's just starting out or isn't an extreme audiophile and just wants a good thumping listening to r&b, edm, trap, etc.

Pros: Affordable, flexible voice coils, perfect for a hatchback

Cons: None that I can think of that would be a deal breaker.

Great Sound

"Kick"-Butt Subs!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just installed two of these babies into a custom sub box I made within a few days. Custom porting to for a 30Hz frequency. All powered by a Kicker DX 500.1 amp. First day used, to just break in and already these things sound great. From electronic like Dubstep and House, to heavy metal/metalcore/ect. (anything with kick-drums and other percussions), two of these really punch you right in the chest when that note hits. They are also built like a tank, the outer case seems like really thick cast (or pot metal maybe?) steel, the magnet is gigantic and the cone itself is thick and rigid. The only thing that's a bit questionable is the foam connecting the cone to the frame, it seems stronger than the deck and door Kicker's that I have in my vehicle, but it still seems easy to puncture. So just be careful with that. I guess they can't make it any stronger so it can extrude with the cone. First set of subs I've ever wired and placed into a car! Nice easy install. Gonna' kick for a long time!

Pros: Sturdy, great value, great sound. Very punchy when tuned right, if that's how you want to tune them (rather than rumble-y). They may be a bit on the cheap end, for the price, but they can definitely compete in small competitions. They'll also handle quite a bit of power. And they're loud and I barely pushed them to 50%. Then again, that also has to do with the amp; 250 watts to each in my set-up. If you're looking for a mid end woofer that can rival up to a high end one, buy these.

Cons: They didn't come with a protective grill to put over the cone and edge-foam like my deck and door Kicker speakers, but that's okay I'll do something custom for 'em. The foam connecting the cone to the case seems like it can be punctured/damaged a bit easily. But maybe that's like that will all woofers/speakers so the cone can extrude ?

I love these subs

Subwoofer Features
Enclosure Compatibility

Subwoofer Features

Dual Voice Coils: For increased system flexibility, the woofer has two 2Ω voice coils. When the voice coils are wired in parallel, the woofer presents a 1Ω load. When wired in series, the woofer presents a 4Ω load.

Ribbed Surround: The optimized ribbed polyurethane helps eliminate flex and distortion.

Spiralead Tinsel Leads: The durable Spiralead tinsel leads are woven into the woofer's spider, for added strength and reliability.

Steel Basket with Vented Pole Piece: The steel basket's vented pole piece and Kicker's Quad Venting slots contribute to the woofers' efficient cooling and durability.

Speaker Terminals: Each speaker terminal has two 0.25" push-on terminals (crimp-on quick slides included).

Enclosure Compatibility

Enclosure Versatility: The Kicker Comp subwoofer is versatile, performing well in vented or sealed enclosures, and in free-air applications.

Sealed Enclosures: A sealed enclosure design offers the smoothest response, with increased energy at the lowest frequencies (between 20 to 30 Hz).

  • Minimum enclosure volume: 1.25ft³
  • Maximum enclosure volume: 3.5 ft³

Ported Enclosures: A ported (vented) enclosure design is typically more efficient than a sealed enclosure.

  • Minimum enclosure volume: 1.75 ft³ with a 2" x 12.5" slot port opening that is 16" deep
  • Maximum enclosure volume: 2.25 ft³ with a 2" x 12.5" slot port opening that is 16.375" deep

Infinite Baffle Mounting: The Kicker Comp subwoofers are also designed to be used as free-air drivers. The infinite baffle mounting method effectively utilizes the trunk of a sedan as the enclosure.
