The heavy steel basket cuts down on unwanted vibrations.

Kicker technology at work

Kicker's 40CWD84 8" subwoofer features a flex-resistant polypropylene cone for hard-hitting lows without distortion, while the ribbed foam surround promotes long excursion and helps to keep the cone on target. The sub's steel basket provides a reliable foundation for big bass, and its extensive venting ensures long-lasting performance that won't break down when the bass gets heavy.

Easy to add to nearly any setup

This sub handles up to 200 watts RMS to bring out the depth your music's been missing, and its dual 4-ohm voice coils make it easy to connect to a mono amplifier. This versatile sub works well in sealed or ported enclosures, and it's even suitable for free-air applications.

To drive this single subwoofer, we recommend a mono amplifier rated between 150 and 300 watts RMS at 2 ohms. For more information, please refer to our article on How to Match Subwoofers and Amplifiers.

Like some others, this went into my Lexus LS430 to replace the original. Sounds great to me and saves money to boot! What's not to like about that???

Like some others, this went into my Lexus LS430 to replace the original. Sounds great to me and saves money to boot! What's not to like about that???

Pros: Great sound, very nice bass, great price!

Cons: have to drill a couple of holes since not a perfect factory match but it does fit in my rear deck and cannot tell after installed!

Exactly what I needed

Matt from Newcastle, OK on 1/9/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This driver is exactly what I needed for a rear deck stock driver replacement. The dual voice coils in parallel to 2 ohms driven by a 500 watt amp mounted in the stock hole of the back deck of the car with no enclosure other than the trunk provided a great thumping bass that the system was missing.

Pros: Enclosure not required. Easy mounting in stock hole Dual voice coil

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have used kicker speakers for years and have never been disappointed. Bought 2 8" to go under the back seat of my 2016 F150 and it was the right choice. I followed the specs for the enclosure that I built and it turned out great. Great crisp bass! Would definitely recommend these subs.

Pros: Great price, great bass, able to fit in limited space and has minimal mounting depth.

I bought this speaker to replace the factory subwoofer in my Lexus LS 430. I couldn't be happier. Good fit with very little adjustments plus the free air give it a great sound. I truly recommend this product.

2005 Chrysler 300
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had updated my system with a new head unit and speakers. I thought it sounded great then. After adding this sub matched with a kicker 250.1 amp it sounds fantastic. The bass is very defined, not just thump thump. Adding the sub and amp along with lpf and hpf settings on the head unit the door and deck speakers also really came alive. Mounting was easy. I made up a plywood ring and screwed the sub to it and then dropped that in the factory rear deck spot on my chrysler 300. Then ran screws through the rear deck into the plywood ring. I couldn't be happier with this purchase.

Pros: Great bass addition to all types of music. No list trunk space.

Cons: None

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The sound totally blew me away for an 8" sub. I was expecting this little guy to struggle but man was I wrong! I don't even have to worry about upgrading to anything bigger so I can keep things "factory" in my Tahoe without eating up valuable space getting a larger box/sub! I believe mines was a "scratch and dent." Could not tell as everything was in perfect condition!

Pros: A lot of bass from a little sub!

Cons: Not a thing!

Excellent little Subwoofer!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sounds great. Good bass for the size. Fits in 2004-20010 stock subwoofer box, but have to drill new holes. Be careful not to tighten the screws down to much or you will strip the plastic of the stock subwoofer compartment..

Pros: Good price, works well, looks cool. Nice bass for the size

Cons: requires an amp to drive it with a stock stereo.

Big boost

Rollout from Florida on 1/15/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got a great sound improvement by squeezing this 8" sub where the factory 6.5" sub used to be. Really matches up nicely with the Kicker amp that the Crutchfield adviser recommended.

Pros: Good product. Great support. The technical help was ready on moments notice to help with wiring questions.

Cons: None.

Love and Hate relationship

John G from New York on 12/1/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This has been the first time i have ever installed an aftermarket subwoofer into any of my cars and i hate the fact that i did not do this sooner. I love the way it makes the music come to live and it makes music more enjoyable. I paired this subwoofer with a Sound Ordnance M1350 350W Amp and i can say i truly love it. I its not too crazy for my liking, as i am not into those systems that make your whole car rattle. I gave this a good rating because it worked like a charm while it lasted. Two weeks into having my system installed something happened (I am not a sound system expert) and it stoped working. I have not been to the audio shop to figure out what went wrong, but as of now i will assume that the subwoofer just stoped working (who knows maybe something went wrong during the installation, or maybe it was the amp that came with any issues).

Pros: Great bass while it worked. If you are not looking into anything crazy, i would definitely recommend this subwoofer.

Cons: My subwoofer only lasted for two weeks, but i have not taken it back to the audio shop. I do not want to assume that it was the subwoofer that gave out, as it could have been an installation error, or even the amp it self that is bad and not powering the subwoofer correctly, but i will find out soon enough and update this review. If my subwoofer was still working i would have to say that there were no Cons.

Pros: Installed in proper enclosure these are perfect loud deep clean subs. BTW you'll save a ton of space

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Fits in stock subwoofer location with minor work on 2001 Chevy Suburban. Will be same replacement except for 03 and up where they moved the subwoofer under the center console. Had to mount 3/4 inch piece of plywood over the stock sub box to be able to fit. Can't tell it is there when trim is replaced. It works on the stock amplifier if you wire it in parallel so the amp sees 2ohms.

Pros: Direct replacement besides plywood mounting

Cons: None so far

LS 430 Replacement

Wendell K from Orlando on 3/30/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Speaker seems to be an excellent subwoofer with very good build. I used it to replace a blown rear deck subwoofer in an Lexus LS430. It wasn't an exact match but I was able to make it work. It sounds very good. I'm hearing bass that was never present in my factory speaker. Crutchfield pros made this an easy transaction and provided a good value.

Pros: Great bass and excellent construction.

Cons: Not an exact fit for LS 430 subwoofer.

KICKER 8" CompD Subwoofer

gatorguy from Kokomo, Indiana on 3/24/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My factory radio bit the dust in my 07 ram quad cab, so I bought a Kenwood kdc-bt56u to replace it. After thinking about it, I decided that now would be a good time to add a little more muscle to the system. So,I added a Kicker DXA250.1 amp and a Kicker 8" CompD Subwoofer. And let me tell you, MUSCLE IS EXACTLY WHAT I GOT! The truck already had a seven speaker Infinity amplified system that already sounded pretty good, but what a great addition this was. Because of the limited space in the truck to HIDE a sub, I chose the 8". I was able to easily install it under the backseat where a storage compartment was. Removed the cover and then made a plaster mold of the space I had. Then I fabricated a fiberglass enclosure with a MDF lid. The 8" sub drops right in. Rear of that is the amp. Pretty cool set-up! I've got me SERIOUS BUMP in my Ram now! Kind of amazing that a man over 50 would power-up his ride in such a way, but I'm glad I did. The rugged build of the sub impressed me when I took it out of the box. Heavy frame, superior coating on the metal parts and rigid terminals. I read many reviews before I made my purchase, and I have to agree with everybody that this is an awesome sub. This is also my first experience dealing with Crutchfield and I have to say they are top notch in all ways! Customer service, knowledge of products and patience with a newby in aftermarket audio. I'll definitely be a return customer! Do I recommend this product? OH YEAH !!! VERY COOL!!!

Pros: Great quality and price. Big sound from a not so big sub.

Cons: NONE

Good infinite baffle Sub

Leo from California on 3/19/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sure there are subs, and then there are subs to use in certain conditions. In my case I needed an infinite baffle type sub to mount on my rear deck. No, not all subs are designed the same as I found out...the hard way. I original bought a JL Audio 8" sub to fill the void, but instantly found out that is was not designed at all for my needs. So with reluctancy I bought the Kicker sub based on the fact it was crossed designed for both enclosed and free air type installs. Installed as expected without any complicated hole pattern problems. The dual voice coil was a nice feature, so I went ahead and wired it up for 2ohm application, paired it with my JL Audio 500 watt Mono amp and was impressed by the sound. Granted, it's not going to shake any rear view mirrors they way 2 15" would, but it does fill the car with the lows I was missing in my music. Keep in mind, it's an 8 inch sub so don't expect the thump your going to get from a 10", 12" or 15" sub. It's just not going to happen no matter how you install it.

Pros: Good for free air type installs.

Cons:

Kicker a good replacement for Lexus Mark Levinson sub

DownieD from La Grange, NC on 4/8/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very good replacement for the 04 Lexus 430 Mark Levinson rear deck free air subwoofer. Simply wire the dual voice coil in series to get a closer impedance match. Not quite as loud as Levinson subwoofer, but can't beat the value. Lexus wants some $400+ for the stock replacement which is crazy when you can install this product for less than 1/4 the cost. It's a no brainer.

Pros: Great value, great sound.

Cons: Have to modify slightly to get it to fit the existing Lexus installation bracket. Not too difficult, just takes a little planning.

Nice Subtle Subs

QD from Downingtown, Pa on 6/14/2013

These are nice subs if you want some bass without taking up a lot of space. I custome fit these subs in the rear deck of my Volvo S60T. They are hooked up to a 2 channel Boston Acustics amp (80 watts per channel / low pass filter). These subs rock. Suprising bass for small subs. No box either. Just a pair of oversized baffels to help with rattle since I had to cut the opening to make it wide enough to fit the 8's. Very nice. I'm now a fan of Kicker and will outfit the rest of my car with their gear.

Pros: Nice bass for the size. Came with install gear

Cons: None that I've noticed.

Subwoofer Features
Enclosure Compatibility

Subwoofer Features

Dual Voice Coils: For increased system flexibility, the woofer has two 4Ω voice coils. When the voice coils are wired in parallel, the woofer presents a 2Ω load. When wired in series, the woofer presents an 8Ω load.

Ribbed Surround: The optimized ribbed polyurethane helps eliminate flex and distortion.

Spiralead Tinsel Leads: The durable Spiralead tinsel leads are woven into the woofer's spider, for added strength and reliability.

Steel Basket with Vented Pole Piece: The steel basket's vented pole piece and Kicker's Quad Venting slots contribute to the woofers' efficient cooling and durability.

Speaker Terminals: Each speaker terminal has two 0.25" push-on terminals (crimp-on quick slides included).

Enclosure Compatibility

Enclosure Versatility: The Kicker Comp subwoofer is versatile, performing well in vented or sealed enclosures, and in free-air applications.

Sealed Enclosures: A sealed enclosure design offers the smoothest response, with increased energy at the lowest frequencies (between 20 to 30 Hz).

  • Minimum enclosure volume: 0.5 ft³
  • Maximum enclosure volume: 1.2 ft³

Ported Enclosures: A ported (vented) enclosure design is typically more efficient than a sealed enclosure.

  • Minimum enclosure volume: 0.66 ft³ with a 1.5" x 8" slot port opening that is 18" deep
  • Maximum enclosure volume: 1.2 ft³ with a 1.5" x 8" slot port opening that is 12.25" deep

Infinite Baffle Mounting: The Kicker Comp subwoofers are also designed to be used as free-air drivers. The infinite baffle mounting method effectively utilizes the trunk of a sedan as the enclosure.
