Overbuilt? More like built just right

Kicker's 40CWR122 12” subwoofer comes equipped with a tough, polypropylene cone that stays rigid during intense play sessions so you hear accurate bass. A custom-designed back and top plate give the woofer plenty of room to travel, while the durable rubber surround helps to control cone movement during a heavy workout. This sub uses extensive venting in its heavy steel basket to shrug off heat, so you can count on reliable performance.

Say hello to system flexibility

This Kicker CompR will handle up to 500 watts RMS so make sure you have an amplifier that'll do it justice. Its dual 2-ohm voice coils give you more wiring options when setting up your system, and this versatile sub works well in sealed or ported enclosures.

To drive this single subwoofer, we recommend a mono amplifier rated between 375 and 750 watts RMS at 4 ohms. For more information, please refer to our article on How to Match Subwoofers and Amplifiers.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great sub for price has switch for make changing ohms level easy. They can handle way over 500 ems more like around 800rms . I have the kicker 40dcwr122 running on two audiopipes strapped together 1500apcl. So at two ohms they are taking around 700 each.

Pros: Great bass

Cons: Non kicker changed the ems rating on these when there new stuff came out they are really 800rms

I just bought a 12" comp R and let me tell you I love it! I have it connected to a kicker 500 watt amp and it is just amazing. My hair tingles with it and when people are sitting in the back seat they say they can feel it in their chest. It's an amazing product I would advise anyone to grab a sub, if they truly want a sub that is going to get the job done!

Pros: *cheap *Looks good *sounds great *Dual voice *Just an amazing sub

Cons: * Currently don't have any cons

Bought these a week ago and have to say I am impressed! They hit SO hard and SO clean. Have them paired with a 1500 watt rms monoblock kenwood amp running them at 1 ohm. I HIGHLY recommend these to anyone.

Powerful and Accurate.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Had a pair of these subs for about a month and they're awesome! fantastic power combined with accurate, crisp bass. My amp is currently only powering them at 450rms each even though they can handle up to 800rms, but they still sound great and accurate. Previously had kenwood subs, and these are much better in every category. Worth the extra money.

Pros: Powerful and accurate.

Cons: Haven't found any yet.

Paco from Anchorage, AK 99501 on 9/29/2014

recently bought this speaker a couple days ago. I was pretty impressed when I first hooked it up and have been running this on 4 ohms until this morning. I started reading reviews and decided to switch to 1 ohm and I gotta say that I don't regret buying this kicker. I literally got a back massage and my whole dash in my truck was vibrating after switching to 1 ohm. I'd recommend this to anybody.

Pros: Crazy BASS

Cons: Needs a big amplifier

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great sub. Its very powerful, and still very good sound quality at low levels. Both loud and clean (when paired with a compatible amp). Looks real cool in your trunk. And with the impedance switch right on the back installation is extremely simple.

Pros: Sounds great, powerful, built-in impedance switch, looks cool

Cons: None yet

Powerful Sub

Shawn from Midland ,TX on 1/27/2014

This sub is extremely powerful for a shallow type sub. It hits extremely hard and takes lots of power! I've got a Alpine MRP-M500 powering it and could take more! It literally makes your hair tingle! I have it a kicker ported enclosure. Super impressed! Good value as well for a mid level sub! Be sure to use a powerful enough amp or you could be disappointed.

Pros: Powerful sub!

Cons: None

For the longest time I wanted alpine type r 12's just never had the money and then I went to a local place and they told me these were the best for the money, and let me tell you they weren't lying. My little brother sat down in my backseat and said it was the best back massage ever. I can't say enough how happy I am with these subs.

Pros: Hit super hard on every frequency, turns people's heads, just all around great quality

Cons: Non

I gave 5 stars because they deserve it. First of all let me just say "WOW" These subs really do what they say. The bass comes out clean and crisp and when the lows really kick in thats when u really feel the shaking. If ur sitting in the back seat your back literally gets a pounding from these speakers. But its all good for me. Kicker came out with some bad-ass subs with these ones. Installation was a piece of cake and u have ur wiring options at the flick of a switch.

Hands-on research

Product Research

Dual 2-ohm Voice Coils: This woofer features dual 2-ohm voice coils, offering wiring flexibility. A switch on the speaker terminal allows you to easily change from parallel (the woofer presents a 1-ohm load) to series (the woofer presents a 4-ohm load) wiring for the voice coils.

UniPlate Construction: The woofer features a one-piece UniPlate construction with a vented, extended pole piece and backplate. This unique design provides the following benefits:

  • Optimizes heat transfer efficiency for cooler operation
  • Eliminates erratic magnetic flux in the voice coil gap
  • Releases pressure under the suspension for uniform cone movement
  • Prevents the voice coil from bottoming out, and the resulting damage

Tinsel Leads: CompR subwoofers use Spiralead tinsel-lead technology; the tinsel lead wires are woven into the spider to relieve mechanical stress.

Enclosure Compatibility

Sealed Enclosure Applications: Sealed enclosures provide the most control over a woofer and provide accurate sonic reproduction, making them suitable to all types of music. Kicker recommends sealed enclosures in the following range:

  • Minimum Enclosure Volume: 1.0 ft³
  • Maximum Enclosure Volume: 4.6 ft³

Vented Box: Vented (or ported) enclosures typically provide better overall efficiency than sealed so they are suitable for use with smaller amplifiers, giving you more bass output from less power. Kicker recommends ported enclosures in the following range:

  • Minimum Enclosure Volume: 1.75 ft³ with a 12.5" x 2.5" x 20" slot port
  • Maximum Enclosure Volume: 2.25 ft³ with a 12.5" x 3" x 20.5" slot port

I have the kx 800.1 powering 2 compr 12's in a ported box and I still have plenty of room to throw more power down[ James  May 28, 2016 ]
I run a massive audio N4 mono amp for my two kicker comp r 12. I don't think your cxa600 will have enough peak power seeing as the comp r 12 can handle 1000 watts peak. I would look into the massive Audio Amps, the n4 has plenty of power and great quality for around the same price as the cxa600. I believe I paid around $270 for mine.[ adam  May 27, 2016 ]
Yes and it will sound great![ Marri  May 27, 2016 ]
You just have to put the switch in the middle that's how you will get the full output[ CHRISTINA  Feb 27, 2016 ]
Would call Crutchfield and ask them. They helped me with the little stuff which ends up being the most important stuff.[ Jose  Feb 26, 2016 ]
Put the switch on 4 ohm and wire in parallel then the final impedance will be 2. Thats what i did with my setup. A 2 ohm stable mono amp @ 1000 watts[ ROBERT  Feb 26, 2016 ]
Put the switch to 4ohms on both then connect the subs together positive to positive, negative to negative, the run then run it to your amp[ Darren  Feb 26, 2016 ]
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: If you pair the Kicker CWR122 with that Pioneer you will under power those subs. I would recommend a different amp. The Jensen DUB A11000D would match well at 1 ohm you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.[ Krissy  Aug 03, 2015 ]  Staff
It might because the sub has a cooling port at the bottom of the sub that lets air flow thru it. If that is blocked then it might over heat. If u can find a spacer to put between the box and sub then u should be good to go. Just measure for clearance of the sub if ur box is under the rear seats.[ ROBERT  Mar 11, 2015 ]
I wasn't sure if that 1/8" really mattered[ Ben  Mar 11, 2015 ]
This sub needs 5 3/4" mounting depth. Thats technically 5 6/8". Your box's mounting depth is 5 5/8", right? If so then this sub might not fit your box because the sub is 1/8" bigger. Hopefully my response is helpful to you[ ROBERT  Mar 11, 2015 ]
Thanks for your question. For information on selecting the best amp for your subs I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They will be able to help determine the differences between the amp models and help you make the best choice for your system.[ Krissy  Mar 03, 2015 ]  Staff
you cant, each coil is 2 ohm but you have to use both.if you get a dual 4ohm then the settings choices will be 2ohm and 8ohm[ Thomas  Jul 21, 2014 ]
Not positive, but putting the setting on 4 ohm level; then put a 4 ohm resistor across speaker wire to each speaker. When two resistors of the same value are parallel together, the resistance becomes half. So radio output will see a total of 4 ohms, and speaker will split the load, to have 2 ohm value on it. My best guess. U may have to use multiple resistors to add up to 4 ohms, like 4- one ohms, 2- two ohms, results will be close enough.[ JOHN  Jul 20, 2014 ]
