Overbuilt? More like built just right

Kicker's 40CWR124 12” subwoofer comes equipped with a tough, polypropylene cone that stays rigid during intense play sessions so you hear accurate bass. A custom-designed back and top plate give the woofer plenty of room to travel, while the durable rubber surround helps to control cone movement during a heavy workout. This sub uses extensive venting in its heavy steel basket to shrug off heat, so you can count on reliable performance.

Say hello to system flexibility

This Kicker CompR will handle up to 500 watts RMS so make sure you have an amplifier that'll do it justice. Its dual 4-ohm voice coils make it easy to connect to a mono amplifier, and this versatile sub works well in sealed or ported enclosures.

To drive this single subwoofer, we recommend a mono amplifier rated between 375 and 750 watts RMS at 2 ohms. For more information, please refer to our article on How to Match Subwoofers and Amplifiers.

Kicker Rocks Literally

Brian B from Greenwood, IN on 3/3/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Mounted this in a sealed enclosure and powering with a Kicker CXA600.1 amp. Sounds great in our big Suburban! Since I added this to a factory head unit, I also installed the Kicker CXARC Remote control to have full control of the bass. System sound great and as soft or loud as I want. I have another Kicker competition 12" that I bought from Crutchfield in my Tahoe that is still thumping after almost 18 years.

Pros: Great construction and quality material. Great price Sound is awesome

Cons: None

Great subs

Tyler R from Tuscaloosa, AL on 2/26/2016

I have had these subs for around 6 months now, kicker is not lying when they say it can handle 1000 watts. I have 2 wired to a 2000 watt amp, and they push really hard, they are so loud I am currently looking for new door speakers because they are so loud. The bass is clean and strong, strong enough to make it hard to breathe hahaha. Beautiful woofer design, I like the look of them, but that's not what the review is about, I wish the magnet was a little bigger, but for the price it can't be beat. In my single cab truck it is everything the box can hold. The spring loaded clips for the wiring is a little sketchy, the springs feel like they don't hold the wires good, but 6 months later I have had no problems with my wiring connections inside the boxes. The impedance switch helps out a lot with setting the load on the speakers.

Pros: Pretty sub, good bass for the money and mount depth, freaking awesome power handling (that's just how everything made by kicker is though), convenient ohm impedance switch, can't stress how hard they hit for the money

Cons: The wire connections are a little soft and look like the wires will fall out, but no problems so far with the wire

Awesome speaker

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I find this speaker to be extremely efficient. Even with the volume turned down very low you can hear every Bass note, Crystal Clear. And if you want to wake up the neighbors, this sub hits as hard as you want. It's all about tuning the enclosure port to match the sub and enclosure size.I highly recommend the use of a Ported enclosure as that is one way to let the heat out and keep the speaker at a lower and cooler temperature. A cooler Voice Coil will produce better clarity and better responsiveness. In fact I will highly recommend the Kicker 40VCWR122 over the 40CWR124 as that enclosure is designed by kicker. Tuning the enclosure port is a science and is very specific to that particular sub that is being installed in it. I trust the manufacturer's enclosure will definitely be the best and most accurate one available commercially. It will be worth spending the extra $50. In fact since I am so happy with the Kicker 40CWR124, I am now going to place an order for the Kicker 40VCWR122 for my other car.

Pros: Price, Quality, Power

Great product

Fantastic sound, hits hard and tight!!

Pros: Easy to wire if your not familiar with dual voice coil subs

Cons: In a multi sub system, voice coil terminals rather than a switch would be preferred. It can be somewhat limiting.

Hands-on research

Product Research

Dual 4-ohm Voice Coils: This woofer features dual 4-ohm voice coils, offering wiring flexibility. A switch on the speaker terminal allows you to easily change from parallel (the woofer presents a 2-ohm load) to series (the woofer presents an 8-ohm load) wiring for the voice coils.

UniPlate Construction: The woofer features a one-piece UniPlate construction with a vented, extended pole piece and backplate. This unique design provides the following benefits:

  • Optimizes heat transfer efficiency for cooler operation
  • Eliminates erratic magnetic flux in the voice coil gap
  • Releases pressure under the suspension for uniform cone movement
  • Prevents the voice coil from bottoming out, and the resulting damage

Tinsel Leads: CompR subwoofers use Spiralead tinsel-lead technology; the tinsel lead wires are woven into the spider to relieve mechanical stress.

Enclosure Compatibility

Sealed Enclosure Applications: Sealed enclosures provide the most control over a woofer and provide accurate sonic reproduction, making them suitable to all types of music. Kicker recommends sealed enclosures in the following range:

  • Minimum Enclosure Volume: 1.0 ft³
  • Maximum Enclosure Volume: 4.6 ft³

Vented Box: Vented (or ported) enclosures typically provide better overall efficiency than sealed so they are suitable for use with smaller amplifiers, giving you more bass output from less power. Kicker recommends ported enclosures in the following range:

  • Minimum Enclosure Volume: 1.75 ft³ with a 12.5" x 2.5" x 20" slot port
  • Maximum Enclosure Volume: 2.25 ft³ with a 12.5" x 3" x 20.5" slot port

Each sub is connected individually to the amp with a rca plug in. One is plugged in to left channel and one to right channel plug.[ Joe  Jan 04, 2015 ]
Yes back to the amp with what ever gauge wire you are using I had a larger size amp and the subs could handle 0 gauge wire 5000rms[ HUNTER  Jan 02, 2015 ]
There are plenty of ways to attach the second sub from the sub to the box best way is to have a mono block amp with one terminal and have a sub box with two terminals on them, hook the second sub same way to your sub terminal as you have with the first sub, then from the amp the the sub do a series hook up so go from positive terminal to the positive sub and negative to the second sub and then run a 8 gauge wire from the negative sub terminal to the positive terminal, you can also do this with the sub inside the sub box as well to make your sub coil drop form a 4 coil to a two coil if u need any more help go on Google[ JATINDER  Jan 01, 2015 ]
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: It all depends on which Kicker subwoofer it is and if you're putting a 4 ohm load on the amp by how you wire the subwoofer. This amp actually is putting out 600 watts RMS at 2 ohms so if the subwoofer is wired in such a way that you put the 2 ohm resistance on it you can set it to 1 or 2.If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.[ Krissy  Jun 30, 2014 ]  Staff
