The heavy steel basket cuts down on unwanted vibrations.

Kicker technology at work

Kicker's 40CWS84 8" subwoofer features a flex-resistant polypropylene cone for hard-hitting lows without distortion, while the ribbed foam surround promotes long excursion and helps to keep the cone on target. The sub's steel basket provides a reliable foundation for big bass, and its extensive venting ensures long-lasting performance that won't break down when the bass gets heavy.

Easy to add to nearly any setup

This sub handles up to 200 watts RMS to bring out the depth your music's been missing, and its 4-ohm impedance makes it compatible with just about every amplifier on the market. This versatile sub works well in sealed or ported enclosures, and it's even suitable for free-air applications.

Need an amp for this sub? Check out this Crutchfield-approved bass package.

To drive this single subwoofer, we recommend a mono amplifier rated between 150 and 300 watts RMS at 4 ohms. For more information, please refer to our article on How to Match Subwoofers and Amplifiers.

I dont know if I need to check my equalization settings but it does not has enough punch. Maybe I need to replace the factory amplifier. I installed in a Lancer Ralliart 2004 in the original sub enclosure. But in all a very good product just i need to change my settings.

Great Replacement Sub for 2004 Avalon

Anonymous from Denver, CO on 10/21/2016

2004 Toyota Avalon
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I recently installed the Kicker 40CWS84 in my 2004 Avalon to replace a blown factory sub in the middle of the rear deck and I am very happy with it. I have a Kenwood single din HD receiver installed without an amplifier and it does a great job powering the sub. I didn't give it a five only because it isn't able to give me the solid feel of a enclosed sub given the open environment of it's mounting location and the volume of the trunk. However, that is not my style so I am happy with how it sounds. Installation was straightforward. I removed the whole rear seat and upper deck which is not as bad as it sounds and it made fitting everything much easier. I reused the factory mounting brackets with longer course thread screws to sandwich the Kicker in place. I added some 1/4' foam door insulation around the rim of the sub between the two factory mounting brackets to prevent any vibration from occurring and it works great. A dremel tool is your friend as I had to use it to trim back some of the plastic on the rear brake light housing to allow for the higher mounted height of the Kicker sub. Over all, I took my time and it turned out great. The supplied wiring connector provided by Crutchfield had the wrong size blade connectors, but the correct size connectors were included in the Kicker box. No big deal. I'd recommend this upgrade to anyone needing to replace a blown factory sub in an Avalon. It really improves the sound and is an easy and much enjoyable upgrade.

Pros: Easy straightforward install

Cons: None

Best 400W Subwoofer Money Can Buy

Jaecen F from Brazoria, TX on 9/6/2016

2001 Ford Expedition
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Let me start off by saying that this is a really nice Subwoofer. I've had 8 inch subs in the past, but this one is by far one of the best. The design is well developed, and tells you it's built with passion and quality. The RMS has great ratings. I've got a Kenwood amp 400W max 150W RMS and it still has room to play with adding more power. The sound is clean, full, and heavy, as it should be. If you are like me and have an 8 inch stock enclosure in your truck, and want a lot of thump without spending a ton of money, then this is the sub for you.

Pros: Excellent bass. Can take lots of power, well built, clean sound, durable and can take abuse.

Cons: None.

Nearly a shallow mount for entry-level price

John from Sierra Vista, AZ on 8/1/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I needed a shallow mount speaker, and the specs on this 8" Kicker are 3.5" mounting depth. Perfect in a .5 cubic foot narrow box behind the back seat of a pickup. Tight, punchy bass, great quality as always.

Pros: Compact, but handles 200 watts RMS. Focused, tight sound.

Cons: None.

Good Sub. Good price.

Philip from Richmond, VA on 2/8/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got the Kicker 40CWS84 subwoofer for my 2004 Lexus ES330. It replaced my factory Mark Levinson version that blew out a month or two prior. My main concerns were that I didn't want to have to install a new amp to accommodate a new sub and I didn't want any distortion. This speaker has hit both requirements. I am a bit of an audiophile, but I don't think the sub is that important as long as it is consistent. I've heard some subs that overproduce at different notes and make you want to adjust the bass higher at others.

Great Little Sub.

The BC Factor from PA on 1/21/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed two of these in the rear deck of a 1966 Chevy Impala. They are run as "free air" subs and powered with about 200W each. I am very impressed with the amount of output they are able to achieve inside the cabin of the car. No you can't hear the car thumping from 5 miles away, but there's plenty in the cabin. And because they are mounted in the rear deck with no cabinets, no truck space was given up. I highly recommend them for use in "free-air" type applications.

Pros: Deep Bass, Loud, Inexpensive, Space Saving

Not bad

Anonymous from California on 1/18/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For the small amount of space I had and the low price this sub is very good. It hits the low notes with ease and although it's small, it can hit pretty hard. It goes perfectly in the back of my 92' pickup.

Pros: Small Cheap Powerful Reliable

Cons: Not as loud as a bigger sub

Excellent replacement Speaker

Marcs from Erlanger KY on 10/9/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I needed a replacement for the blown sub woofer in my 2002 Avalon. It took some minor trimming of the factory bracket and I had to cut the mounting screws off flush. With a little bit of struggle, it fit like a glove and sounds great!

Pros: Excellent quality at a reasonable price.

Cons: None

Kickin' Kicker!

Jim from Fort Worth, Texas on 8/14/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Did a LOT of research on subs - this 8" Kicker has great specs. Built a vented enclosure by using the Crutchfield tech help on the site. I'm getting MONSTER bass out of this speaker! Bigger is not always better - it's about matching the speaker to the application. Thanks, Crutchfield!

Pros: Big sound from small package, lots of enclosure flexibility with this size, way better specs than anything else in its class, good packaging.

Cons: None found yet!

Awesome little sub

tdc from Fairfield, CA on 6/4/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Awesome little sub. Built a 0.55 cubic foot box and stuffed it with polyfill. The improvement over the sound that was just components running full-range is unbelievable. Cut the sub off at about 90 Hz and the components at 100 Hz (giving them a much needed break), and the sound was better than expected. truly happy!

Sub works fine; installation difficult

bklinc from Texas on 4/12/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed as OEM replacement in 2001 Toyota Avalon. Kicker has larger magnet & cone than original (JBL), making insertion into original location difficult. If I had to do it again (hopefully not!), I would install differently..

Pros: Replacement Kicker subwoofer has as good a bass as did OEM, maybe better depending on how you tune it.

Cons: Very difficult installation in this vehicle.

Specialty Install

B from Crawfordsville, IN on 7/5/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Installed sub in 1978 Corvette 3 compartment Door. Intended to round out the sound from my 6x9's and 4x6's. I needed to add some low end while maintaining my storage for my t-tops. This sub worked great, I fabricated a door and installed the sub in a free air configuration. I am planning to build a small sealed enclosure to improve sound. Powered by a Sound Stream SDI1.700 steath amp at 250 watts @ 4 ohms I am impressed with the result. It will sound tighter in the sealed enclosure, that said the mid bass is nice and the sub will go lower than I had thought. It is an 8 so don't expect it to break your windsheild, and don't complain about the power handling either, spend 300 on a JL 8inch sub if you want more from an 8.

Pros: American made, Kicker quality & sound, small & discrete perfect for my application

great little sub

ajef7885 from Illinois on 6/21/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this in a free air application in the back deck of my Ford Focus sedan. I just needed some bass reinforcement for the 6x8 and 5-1/4 Kickers in the doors. It works great for the music I listen to( 70's 80's hard/classic rock). I didn't expect it to rattle the windows but it does have a pretty good low end extension. Powered by a 200 watt (bridged) Sound Ordnance amp. My Pioneer head unit is set to 125hz low pass and 100hz high pass (to the door speakers). This makes a nice flow between the sub and the doors. I am very impressed with the performance. It does more than I thought an 8" sub would.

Pros: small, free air capable, solid build

Cons: needs to include Kicker grille to cover it.

Good sound

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Good speaker for a small or compact car. I purchased this peaker thinking it would fill up my 2012 300. Not enough bump. Still, it's a good speaker. I'm actually holding on to it. My wife has a 08 Jetta in which Ill try putting it there. Can't beat the price I got it at, that's why I'd rather hold it and use it for another vehicle. Might not find it at the price I got it at.

Pros: Beautifully structured

Cons: Not good for big cars

Nice Sub

Kirochan from Okinawa on 9/27/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got this to put in the back lid of my Camry. I cut out some MDF, made holes in it for the 6X9 and sub, and replace the factory back lid. It is running in a free air application and it can shake my car!!! I am shocked that it can do that for such a little thing. I plan on later buying another one and putting them both in a box. I cant wait to hear what they sound like in a box.

Pros: ease of use, good price, and does more than what it needs to.

Cons: none

My Polk 8DB40 blew pre-maturely and this was suggested as good replacement. Sound wise, it's pretty much the same but I learned my lesson and back out the gain on my amp.

Pros: Price, installation...

Cons: Dunno if it can go down deep...

The 8 inch Kicker sub works ok for its size, but not much base. Its mounted on the back deck of my 07 Hemi Charger.Since its not mounted in an enclose it did not produce much bass.

Pros: Medium bass for its size

Cons: Not much bass for the money.

Subwoofer Features
Enclosure Compatibility

Subwoofer Features

Ribbed Surround: The optimized ribbed polyurethane helps eliminate flex and distortion.

Spiralead Tinsel Leads: The durable Spiralead tinsel leads are woven into the woofer's spider, for added strength and reliability.

Steel Basket with Vented Pole Piece: The steel basket's vented pole piece and Kicker's Quad Venting slots contribute to the woofers' efficient cooling and durability.

Speaker Terminals: Each speaker terminal has two 0.25" push-on terminals (crimp-on quick slides included).

Enclosure Compatibility

Enclosure Versatility: The Kicker Comp subwoofer is versatile, performing well in vented or sealed enclosures, and in free-air applications.

Sealed Enclosures: A sealed enclosure design offers the smoothest response, with increased energy at the lowest frequencies (between 20 to 30 Hz).

  • Minimum enclosure volume: 0.5 ft³
  • Maximum enclosure volume: 1.2 ft³

Ported Enclosures: A ported (vented) enclosure design is typically more efficient than a sealed enclosure.

  • Minimum enclosure volume: 0.66 ft³ with a 1.5" x 8" slot port opening that is 18" deep
  • Maximum enclosure volume: 1.2 ft³ with a 1.5" x 8" slot port opening that is 12.25" deep

Infinite Baffle Mounting: The Kicker Comp subwoofers are also designed to be used as free-air drivers. The infinite baffle mounting method effectively utilizes the trunk of a sedan as the enclosure.

No, it won't. Just pretty much for the low end but not for bass rattling effect that you want to get. [ CARLOS  Dec 04, 2014 ]
I bought it to replace cheap speaker in a nitro bottle sub. Sounds good on a 250 watt amp. Hope this helps but you can't go wrong with kicker. [ ERNIE  Dec 04, 2014 ]
As long as the power your putting through to this speaker is clean, (aka- a decent amp) it will provide good bass. I don't think it will do much rattling since it is free air, and only an 8", My suggestion is find a good ported box that holds 2 10"s and run jl audio. won't go wrong with that set up, just have a decent amp. I got this speaker to replace a factory one that had gone south. It's ok, and I'm only running power through it with the deck's amp. [ Kevin  Dec 03, 2014 ]
Not enough to rattle your but it sounds fine [ HENRI L  Dec 03, 2014 ]
Unfortunately, I was not able to install this speaker. I was misinformed by the crutchfield saleman who told me it would mount in the back deck of my MB E300. It did not. [ OLIVER S  Dec 03, 2014 ]
