Our take on the Terk HDTVa

When an outdoor antenna just isn't an option, you can count on the Terk HDTVa for crystal-clear over-the-air digital TV reception. This compact indoor antenna can pick up both high-definition and standard-definition local digital channels, and will look great sitting next to your TV. It sports a high-gain design for receiving both UHF and VHF broadcasts, plus an amplifier that boosts its ability to pull in weaker signals. And you can position the UHF antenna element either vertically or horizontally to aid reception.

This is by far the very best indoor antenna I have ever owned . We live 50-70 miles from the nearest TV stations and it comes in clear and we get 22 stations. Would highly recommend!!!

Able to reduce cable bill

Joe from Pemberton, NJ on 4/17/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The antenna worked well and was easy to install and set up. It brings in about 20 stations so in seldom used rooms it is terrific.

Pros: Brings in a good number of stations

Cons: It is a bit large for a small room.

Easy to set up and worked great right out of the box. Gave it a four instead of a five due to the visual room it takes up but it's really not bad.

What a great antenna

Jim T from Madison, NC on 2/2/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

What a great antenna. Worth every penny. I live out in the country and it still picks up stations slightly over 50 miles away. IT is Amplified and it does have it's own power supply . Not sure why anyone would sya it doesn't unless they just did not look in the box. DUH. I have tried 4 different indoor antennas and this one is by far the best one. None of the others ( all were amplified ) could pick up more than 10 channels. This one brings in 34 channels all clear as a bell. I can't say enough good things about this antenna.

Pros: Great picture , Works further than 50 miles. Simple set up.

Cons: Takes a little work to get it standing.

Does not do a good job

Ja from Alpharetta, GA on 1/23/2017

Very nice looking but is top heavy. It will fall over constantly. I don't know why this is advertised as amplified. it is not. There is no separate power cable. If it supposed to get amplification from the port on your television it does not do a good job. Even though it did a poor job of getting HD channels, I was able to use it as a regular antenna for my home stereo system. It helped pick up the weaker college stations. But again that top heavy design is frustrating. I had to wedge it in my bookshelf over the stereo to keep it in place.

Pros: Looks good Can be used as a regular antenna

Cons: Top heavy and falls over Does not do a good job of picking up HD signals Not worth price

Great picture

Anonymous from Lenexa, KS on 10/31/2016

The picture quality is great, and I get more channels than I expected too. The only problem is channel 4 goes in and out - not sure if that's an antennae issue or a network issue.

Great antenna

Brit from NY on 8/7/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great little antenna. I purchased the same several years back with great luck and reception for stations that are 30 mi. away. Was able to pick up stations which were over 60 miles away, as well. My original took a few tumbles and broke several pieces of it. Never leave your antenna near an open window with gale force winds. It was time to spring for a new one. Absolutely love the new one and keeping the window closed now!

Pros: Great reception.

Cons: None that I've found.

Best indoor antenna for the price

Jean S from Mebane, NC on 5/22/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my 3rd TERK because it pulls in 40+ channels from Raleigh to Greensboro. I had 2 TERKS before this one because the cords that attached to the TV broke due to turning the antenna different ways to get a picture; so I temporarily split the wires which helped for a while. This may be prevented by keeping the cord attached to the TV in a straight horizontal position, possibly by using electrical tape to hold it in place.

Pros: Simple assembly

Cons: Cord attached to TV can break if moved around frequently.

No Signal

Orly65 from New York on 11/19/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Tried it on 2 TV's that are located in the opposite sides of the apt I rent in a three family house and got no signal. I live on the top floor with virtually no high rises next to me for blocks and with an alleged signal distance of the furthest stations listed at 13 miles away (according to Antenna Web, which tells you TV signal distance based on zip code) and nothing but white noise. Double checked connections and made sure assembly was correct; returning.

Terk indoor antenna

HerbC from Michigan on 11/15/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I live in more or less a black hole for over the air reception. Even so we could still pull 3 channels with The Leaf but with inclement weather we'd get digital breakup. The Terk is a definite improvement and very easy to set up. The extended rabbit ears don't seem to do anything with our setup but this might be because we cannot fully extend them straight up-we have to flop, them to one side or the other as the ceiling prevents full extension.

Pros: Priced right, packaged nicely, easy set up.

Cons: Power cord seems short

Andrew L from Indiana on 10/11/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I live approximately 35 miles from the broadcasting towers and I have tried many indoor antennas. The Terk antenna by far has been the best amplified antenna I have found that captures the HDTV digital signal. I have also added an in line booster to further amplify the signal. This is the second Terk antenna I have purchased.

Pros: Does a great job capturing the digital signal at 30-35 miles

Cons: The base of the antenna could be a little wider for stabilization. It becomes a little top heavy with the dipoles extended.

Very cheap material

Jim from California on 8/15/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This item is very cheaply made. The rabbit ears are so flimsy that they folded up into a zig-zag when my kitten knocked the unit off the shelf. This cheap tubular metal can not be straightened, it just breaks. The unit felt fragile when I set it up and I should have gone with my instincts and just sent it back before Rusty could knock it down.

Pros: It does acquire signals.

Cons: Very cheaply made. Unstable balance when the rabbit ears are extended (necessary in my region). Not worth the money.

Works for me

billbrz from Charlottesville, VA on 7/29/2015

I have tried about a dozen different antennas on the three TV's in our house. We live in a bit of a low spot so the results from all of the antennas was very poor to no reception. The only antenna that worked for us is this one. I have on in my son's room on the second floor of the house and one mounted in the garage that is connected to the main TV downstairs. We receive ABC, CBS, Fox,NBC and a co

Pros: It works, pulls in signal.

Cons: Will not look nice in your living room.

Bob from Kentucky on 7/15/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I already had one of these and knew it was a great product. I needed another for a new DVR. The tuner on the new DVR is better than what I have been using, and I was amazed to get over 40 usable channels with this antenna. Note that the antenna gets both UHF and VHF, whereas many so-called HD antennas get only UHF. Two of the digital HD stations in my area kept their old Hi-V channel numbers and broadcast on VHF. That's why this antenna has rabbit ears in addition to the directional UHF part.

Pros: Small size, includes amplifier, directional (usually gives better results than omnidirectional)

Cons: Directional - not a problem if all you stations are in the same direction or some in another direction are VHF.

KateC from Maryland on 6/27/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Disappointed . I found the antenna very easy to assemble and attach to TV. However, I was not able to receive a signal. I'm not sure whether it was due to my location (25 miles from city), so I can't totally blame the antenna. I gave it two stars due to the ease of assembly. It may work well in your location.

Pros: Ease of assembly

Works as advertised!

Dan2E from Florida on 6/12/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For an indoor HD Antennae, it works just great. I'm in a suburban area outside of Orlando. No mountains to worry about in FL, but lots of storms and lightening. I have an HD satellite service, but needed something for the local channels when it was storming too much for the dish to work. This thing does the trick! Setup is simple and fairly self-explanatory. I did review the info that came in the box and has a manufacturer website where you can look up your local HDTV broadcast towers on a map. I picked the local channel that we use the most for news and pointed the antennae directly at it. I set it on top of the shelf over the TV, about 8ft up and was able to pull in 40+ channels.

Pros: self-explanatory, easy set up.

Cons: Not much to look at, unless you like that retro rabbit-ear look. Kind of has a Jetson's vibe to it.

Saving $150/month with no cable. Previous antenna could not bring in lowest frequency channels, even though we live in the city. This antenna with the in-line amplifier brought in what the flat, non-amplified antenna could not.

Pros: Works well

Cons: A little cumbersome looking, but it's an antenna

Terk HDTVa review from Boston suburb

Billcubed from Massachusetts on 1/24/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm amazed at how well this works. I hate paying Mr Comcast and have not cut the cord yet but am experimenting. I live 20 miles southeast of Boston. I am also going to try it in southern VT at our ski place but have a feeling the mountains will have a serious effect on the reception and number of channels.

Pros: Gets the networks and local stations like PBS etc. I get about 20 channels. Very clear. The 3 network HD stations and FOX have a VERY good picture. So as long as the game of interest is on a network this is a great solution.

Cons: Does not get cable stations like ESPN and the golf channel BUT i knew that. Part of my experiment is to see if I can live without them.

Great reception

Lee from Tennessee on 11/15/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Picks up channels the previous HDTV antenna could not

Pros: Good reception

Cons: Larger footprint

BillC from Queens, NY on 10/26/2014

I purchased this antenna some time ago, it is just collecting dust now. The product design is horrendous, it does not sit stable on any surface, the weight distribution is unbalanced causing it to tip over. It takes up a lot of space, and it's general appearance is ugly. Works no better or worse than any other antenna I have used.

Pros: none

Cons: ugly design, unbalanced leading to it tipping over, takes up a lot of space

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Built a shelf for a west facing window and sat antenna on it. hooked up to outlet and TV. Used the auto tune feature on the TV that looks for channels. Got about 20 channels with no problem when the website for TV antennas said I should only get 3 or 4. Very happy with purchase.

Pros: small and easy to hook up

Cons: might be difficult to find a good spot to place it

markb from Birmingham,AL. on 8/21/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Picks up most of the local channels if placed exactly toward the correct area. Needs a stand that allows 360 degree placement. Also kind of large for most locations. Works pretty good considering I live on the lower side of a mountain blocking direct sight to towers.

Pros: Less expensive than cable or satellite.

Cons: large, hard to position exactly correct for best reception.

Terk HDRV Antenna

Ken from Charlottesville on 2/27/2014

I bought the Terk HDTV to provide TV input to the computer card in the desktop computer I use in my home office. I was concerned about its ability to pick up local TV stations since I live behind a hill that blocks me from the TV transmitters. I was also concerned about the appearance in my office. When positioned at 70 degrees to the exterior walls, the antenna provided a good clear signal. This orientation was necessary to produce a signal. I mounted the antenna on the top shelf of my bookcase, looking across the room. Its appearance is not distracting and has not been noticed by my wife who occasionally enters my office.

Pros: Provides a good signal for a home with a suboptimum location relative to the signal source.

Cons: The signal quality is sensitive to the orientation of the antenna. Some care is required in selecting a location for the antenna that is satisfactory for both signal quality and appearance..

Ok Antenna

Camyia from Dayton, OH on 2/18/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This antenna was OK. It didn't provide as many OTA Channels as another antenna I purchased no matter where it was placed. I was only able to get 12 channels vs 26 with the other brand.

Pros: Antenna expands so more signals can be picked up.

Cons: Since I live in a downtown area I didn't receive as many channels with this product. Received more with another brand.

Great Antenna

BA from Youngsville, NC on 1/27/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Works great. I have my tv in a corner of the room which leaves dead space behind it; this Terk antenna fits perfect behind the tv, I don't see the antenna and I don't have to adjust it at all (I did go online and look at the directions to the local broadcast towers before setting it up, definitely took the guesswork out). I get all the local OTA channels plus some extended ones. Great price too.

Richrt from Victoria,Texas on 1/15/2014

After trying and discarding several different brands of "guaranteed to work" OTA antennas I actually found that this one works. I've tried LEAF, Amplified LEAF and another off brand I can't remember right now (doesn't matter anyway because it didn't work). The Terk was extremely easy to set up and tune in to my local OTA HD stations which I got an extra three HD channels. I highly recommend. I'm happy, happy. Nuf said.

Pros: It works. Nuf said.

Cons: None. Nuf said.

Great antenna, great support

Lorri C from Schenectady, NY on 12/12/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This product works beautifully, bringing in sound and image every bit as clear as my (now former) cable connection. At first I got a "No Signal" response on my TV, rechecked the very easy steps, tried the second TV, then thought I needed to call tech support. *This is why you want to buy from Crutchfield rather than other online vendors. Dylan and Eli were both very pleasant and helpful. It was a "duh" moment for me I had forgotten that you have to scan for channels aft setting up a new input to a TV. My call was answered and my problem solved in a couple of minutes. I felt like an idiot for overlooking this step, but the tech support guys did not make me feel that way. Good people!

Pros: Cost effective, easy set up, responsive tech support. I even picked up channels not offered by my former cable provider!

Cons: Some may not care for the appearance factor, but I think the people at Terk did a pretty good job of getting this item to pass for hi-tech sculpture. ;-)

Attic Install

Richard from Colonial Heights, Va. on 11/12/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It was pretty good when used in my living room, but not good enough. Some channels I could not receive clearly. After installing it in the attic I could receive all channels in my regional area very clearly. I would recommend this antenna to anyone who wants clear reception over the Air. But for the best reception be sure to install it in your attic.

Pros: Clear reception when install in an upper position of housing such as attic

Cons: Reception not so good when there are other obstacles around. Such as house wiring, metal lamps, stereo, etc.

Great buy for the price! Was getting 7-10 channels on my outdoor digital antenna, that is up on a tower pole. Would have to turn & adjust it to get those....I'm now getting 17-20 stations, even out of Ashville, NC(110 miles away) with a few Mountains in between!

Pros: Easy to connect, works great and doesn't cost big $!!!!

Cons: Can't think of any.......

Great Antenna

BobBG from Charlottesville, VA on 10/4/2013

Works very well, easy to install. Provides a very clear picture. We live in a rural area with hills, but once it's properly oriented pulls in the signal very well and provides a clear picture. The website for the antenna allows you to type in your address and see which direction the antenna should be pointed at, and it works.

Pros: Works very well, easy to install.

Cons: None

Works like it should.

Our house is located ~ 25 miles from the towers. This antenna picks up the signals just fine. Just make sure to point the flat side of the fish-bone shaped antenna to the right direction of where the towers is. Just connect the antenna to the TV, do channel scan, and sit back and relax.

Pros: Clear signals. Amplification is a plus.

Cons: overall size is big, so need to plan ahead where you want to position it.

Using it in a remote farmhouse about 90 miles north of NYC- picks up some core stations, and is a nice backup if the cable ever goes out in an emergency!

Pros: easy to set up! works!

Cons: looks like something off the set of "Bride of Frankenstein". I guess depending on your house decor, that could be a plus.

EdK from Scottsdale AZ on 6/14/2013

This antenna turned out to be the most gangly, poorly designed, and unforgiving I have tried. I had high hopes for this design, but the following design flaws made it unusable: The "rabbit-ears" extendable antennas lean back at about 15 degrees making it impossible to extend them and have the unit on a shelf against a wall. This design is non-flexible and makes finding a place to put it like torture. The arrow portion must be pointed exactly at the transmission antennas in your area. It was blocked by my fireplace and in an other area a wall with wiring. Also the base is the most tediously temperamental design, as you must feed the cord through a slot on the bottom that will not grip the cable so it was constantly causing it to tip over. Finally there is an on-off switch on the Amp Box that myself and Crutchfield support happened to think about causing hours of futile troubleshooting with the device non-amplified!

Pros: If you can find a place for this awkward thing, can get a clean view of your city's antennas and remember to turn ON the Amp... It's OK

Cons: This antenna turned out to be the most gangly, poorly designed, and unforgiving I have tried. Unfortunately, I cannot give this antenna a very high rating. Sometimes it performs pretty well, but other times it's rather poor. This is the fourth antenna I have purchased in my attempts to receive good reception and it is little better than any of the others which is somewhat surprising since the most distant broadcast station is only fifteen miles away. A times I lose the audio or the picture breaks up or both occur simultaneously. I suppose I shall have to continue looking for an antenna which will give me good reception.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I dropped cable and bought the Terk HDTVa as a low-cost, easy-to-implement solution for over-the-air reception. If it didn't work I wouldn't have too much invested and could put an outdoor antenna in the attic. After 3 weeks of use I see no need to get a better antenna. Depending upon atmospheric conditions the antenna is able to pick up 2 stations 55 miles to the west in Charlottesville. I have the antenna in a second flood location and am using two-splitters to supply signal to three TVs using three different tuners. One tuner in a digital-to-analog conversion box does not perform as well as the others. My main tower cluster is 10 miles away, slightly west of due south. I still get a strong signal from those towers when pointing the antenna west toward Charlottesville. The VHF has no problem receiving the one local VHF station, also 10 miles away. At first I attached it to a single Tv on the first floor. Moving it to the second floor resulted in a definite improvement. Placement and tuners are important to getting the most out of this antenna.

Pros: Easy to set up. It is not overly directional and can pick up signals when point 90 degrees away. Has the ability to pull in a signal 55 miles away with the right placement under the right conditions and with a good tuner.

Cons: It's not too pretty to look at.

A Big Improvement If you Live In a Shadowed area

Oleg from The Woodlands, TX on 12/20/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After a recent purchase of an HDTV I found that there are no air channels I can receive on a standard home antenna. The only channel I could see was very unstable and it was given just a single picture updated once per minute. With Terk I can receive about 6 perfect quality HDTV programs some more are available depending on weather conditions. It is exactly what I was looking for.

Pros: Allows to receive perfect quality programs in an area with low level signals. No setup needed.

Cons: The product is perfect for this price. Be ready to manually redirect the antenna if there are more than one transmitter in your area. Somewhat sensitive to noise: most channels disappear when I turn my DVD recorder on.

Great antenna

ClintB from OKC OK on 12/14/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This antenna was everything I expected. I can get 35 channels and about 9 that broadcast in HD. All local channels both UHF and VHF. Some VHF channels will require outdoor anteena because of distance to tower. Anyway, i am dropping cable as it is way overpriced. Great product.

Pros: Picks up more channels for both UHF and VHF than any antenna I have seen. I think it looks cool too

Cons: needs to sit on flat surface

Great downtime alternative

CJ from Long Valley,NJ on 11/18/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this antenna after hurricane Sandy knocked my cable out for 2 weeks. Was skeptical since I am 40+ miles away from NYC and towers. Hooked it up and only was able to get one channel. Then I put it in my attic pointing towards the city and viola!!! I was very impressed at the quality and number of channels I was able to get. I thought I might get a couple of local channels, but I was able to get 2,4,5,9,11 and a dozen or so other channels that I have yet to explore. For me this is a big win since we loose cable often in the winter months and this is meant only to keep us occupied and in touch until it returns. The total quality of this product and the reception is more then worth the 40 bucks.

Pros: I can watch TV when cable is down!

Cons: had to put velcro on the bottom of it to keep it steady even on a flat surface...but hey, not really a huge con

Excellent Product

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This product works like wonder. Easy to set up. Used to get 2 channels with my rabbit ears. Now getting 14 sure shot + some random channels. I use it with a TV tuner with my PC. I just love this weird alien weapon like looking device which gives me uninterrupted HD channels. Check sites like antennaweb and tvfool. If your are has moderate signals I would recommend you get this antenna. Its design looks like it was made to pick up signals from outer space aliens.

Pros: UHF easy. adjustment needed for VHF. compact design except the two field pole structures. easy to set up

Cons: Balancing. Needs a flat surface for balancing this alien device.

Steve from Dayton, OH suburb on 9/26/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I originally bought the Winegard SS-3000 seven months ago. A forum that discusses antennas claimed it was the best with the Terk HDTVa a close second. Recently, the power injector went out on the Winegard antenna. Since Winegard only warrants the antenna for 90 days, I faced having to pay $25 for a new part when the entire antenna sells for $42 (I paid $48). Winegard was rather nonchalent about assisting me and backing up their product. I cut my loses and bought the Terk, which has a much better warranty (one year). The reception is much better than with the Winegard, and it doesn't take up nearly as much space. In fact, I receive a few extra stations that I didn't before. I was even pulling in a few Columbus stations 60 miles away although they wouldn't stay in. However, I have great reception on my Dayton locals without having to work with the Terk antenna as much as I did the Winegard, and I even get two local low power analog stations that I couldn't get with the Winegard.

Pros: Good warranty, takes up little room, works better than most if not all indoor antennas

Cons: None

Terk HDTVa antenna

Davidg from Augusta, GA on 9/24/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is an excellent antenna. It was very easy to set up and works great. This was a replacement for a HDTV antenna. My old antenna was always losing the picture or I would have to adjust it, the new Terk HDTVa antenna is fantastic, I get more channels, don't have to adjust it and the picture is so clear. I'm really glad I made the investment. I checked on the internet but no one could beat the Crutchfield price.

Pros: Easy to install, No adjusting needed after set-up, very clear picture and you can tell it is made well, a real quality antenna.

Cons: There is only one suggestion for the antenna. The cable is made to the antenna so you can only place it a certain distance from the TV. It would be nice if it had the cable jack so you could choose the length and quality of the cable.

This antenna is very good. I get a beautiful picture from stations as far away as Ok City. But I can't get NBC or ABC. I was told I had to have an outdoor antenna to get them but I live in an apartment. I have not rotated the antenna because of space issues, maybe I could pick up more channels. Still the best antenna I have used.

Pros: Easy to use, great pic, no cable bill.

Cons: No NBC, ABC

Free TV - What more can you say. We decided to get rid of Comcast TV and kept the internet and saved ourselves $50/mo. The antenna pays for itself. HD signals are great on my 60" Samsung and we get 22+ HD channels. Hulu and Amazon on fill in the gaps.

Pros: Easy setup Great signal

Cons: Antenna cable is too short. Had to extent with coax cable.

Very happy with the antenna. I live in the 6th floor of a 24 story beachfront condo that has concrete walls inside and out. I have located the antenna close to the ceiling in one of the bedrooms and have excellent reception of all local channels (some 25). Definitely would recommend.

Pros: Very easy to install. Stop paying expensive cable TV or dish services.

Cons: Only local channels available.

Terk HDTVa - A pleased skeptic

Mountain Home from Prescott, Arizona on 4/21/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I read the few more negatives reviews of the Terk HDTVa first. I was pretty skeptical - but decided to take a chance on the antenna anyway. With the Crutchfield return policy there was little to loose. I was pretty sure an outdoor antenna would be necessary but did not really want to go that route. I placed the Terk HDTVa up in the loft above my second floor (similar to an attic install option). I now have 10 digital stations. I noticed the signal is very susceptible to movement as I was up in the loft adjusting the position but with no one occupying the space up there it is not a problem when I am watching a program. I now have free commercial and public television after over twenty years with no TV at all. I used a splitter as an experiment and my radio tuner reception is better as well. My residence is well out of town in the mountains and too far from other residences for cable service. I've never had TV reception because in years past a very tall exterior antenna would have at best pulled a few weak signals. My residence is well out of town in the mountains and too far from other residences for cable service. I never wanted to pay for a satellite service option.

Pros: More stations than I expected.

Cons: May be a little sensitive to movement in a room depending on where you place the unit.

Improved reception

Marty from Baltimore MD on 4/18/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Baltimore is problematic with regard to receiving the "local" public television station. The local transmitter has never been good, and the more powerful transmitter about 30 miles away breaks up regularly. I replaced the rabbit ears with this powered antenna, pointed it to the good transmitter, and there are no more problems with reception. All other local stations come in as well as before. The antenna is directional. If there were other iffy stations, I'd have to turn it, but as it is, I don't. It's also ugly, but I don't care because it does its job.

Pros: Improves marginal TV signal, met my expectations.

Cons: Ugly (but not too big), directional.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Not wanting to pay close 50 bucks for a 2nd cable box and an additional monthly fee of 10 bucks, I decided to try my luck with the Terk HDTVa. To my pleasant surprise, it picked up 60+ channels after my sons installed it and run a scan on it. However, a fair bit of them are in Spanish and Vietnamese, but it still worthwhile as it picked up most local channels for me to watch. Definitely worth the price.

Pros: Ease of buying, on time delivery, easy to install and use.

Cons: Nothing.

Terk HDTVa Indoor Antenna

SallieC from henderson, NV on 3/17/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am 73 and don't want/need cable: I've recently tried a flat panel antenna, but it didn't work; too near mountains apparently. Rabbit ears antenna has been great for years, but I needed a new stronger indoor antenna. Have been relying on Crutchfield's excellent product reviews, and the Terk HDTVa had very specific information and commentary that made my purchase easy. Since I got it, I have picked up about 15-20 additional stations including 2 major network channels that I'd never been able to watch unless I spent time adjusting the antenna for individual signal strength, then later returning to my original setting to get back the the three channels that were strongest. I positioned this Terk antenna one time & pulled in stations I didn't know existed. Hook up was fast and simple ,and reception is clear and stable even during heavy windstorms. Great product. .

Pros: Excellent antenna, and very reasonable.

Cons: A little tippy-cat walks around it, but so far, so good.

Great reception, many channels

mirago from Mountain View, CA on 3/11/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The set-up was straight forward enough. 3rd floor apartment. Once my HDTV went through the automated channel search we ended up with approx. 70 channels. Granted, many were independent channels in foreign languages but the antenna brought them in with clear reception. Leaving in the San Jose/San Francisco Bay area means many different cultures and languages. The price of the antenna will pay for itself in less than a month (original Cable TV bill was $100 a month). The long coax cable allows the antenna to be placed away from the TV if desired or if needed to reach a table (as was in my case since my plasma HDTV was too thin to place the antenna on top of the TV).

Pros: Great reception for the price. Easy to set-up and use. Packaging uses recyclable material. Long coax cable. Futuristic look.

Cons: No wall mount option.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I did lot's of research on TV antenna and became more and more discouraged with what may have been required for good reception. I decided to take a chance on this antenna as I live in Atlanta and fairly close to the broadcasters antennas. I could not be happier. I used the online map of my location to find the best direction to point the antenna and it's worked great. I get a bunch of channels (only about 5 of which I actually watch). I'm very happy with this antenna.

Pros: Easy to set up, good instructions, great performance.

Cons: None

The previous amplified antenna was not bringing in the resolution over all the local channels. This thing works like I expected the other one to work. Unfortunately I only live 10 miles from all the stations but getting the signals inside now is my priority. I'm happy and impressed.

Pros: Didn't put up the rabbit ears and reception was excellant.

Cons: Little tippy but I'll fab a plate to the bottom to prevent it from being tippy.

Terk HDTVa is the Best over the air HD Antenna

Rick from O'Fallon, MO on 11/5/2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I've always kept "over the air" TV available in my home. During storms the dish just doesn't cut it. I like to have a backup to check out approaching storms, etc. I've owned 4 different models ranging in price from $29 to $119. We're 28 miles from the nearest towers. The Terk HDTVa is the "hands down" winner in bringing all of the signals available into my home. I now own three of them. I bought my first Terk HDTVa a number of years back, (they used to cost twice as much). Because of price I tried a different brand or model each time a television was added to my home. None of the others came close. The last model I purchased, (when I gave up on cheap), was an omni-directional indoor antenna that ran me $119. Am I allowed to say "sucked" here? A few weeks ago I said the heck with it and ordered two more Terk HDTVa indoor antennas for a total of three and tossed out the rest. I'm now in the market for a captain's chair with star date log, a live in maid with pointy ears and a warp drive for my Buick Century.

Pros: It's simple to put together. It's simple to set up. It's directional. For someone like myself living 25 to 30 miles from a large city / transmission hub it's basically point and shoot. It picks up every channel available.

Cons: Neither my living room nor family room has the "Star Trek Photon Torpedo" decor this model was obviously designed to go with. "Captain. Channels 7 and 8 are locked on and await your command to fire." "Make it so number 1"

This antenna has been working great for me so far. It was extremely easy to setup and the picture quality is arguably better than that of my satellite. Beecher is about 40 miles south of the city of chicago and I can't believe the picture quality is so wonderful. Paying such a high price for cable when their wasn't many more good channels to watch should be considered a crime in my book. This antenna was well worth the money; and I'm only sorry I didn't do it years ago. Its fun for me but not fun for comcast.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We are 30 miles from Philadelphia, but are clearly out of range for this antenna here. I presume that some hills and trees are enough to keep the antenna from working, since the specs indicate that it should work up to 45 miles. Hard to comment on an item that was not appropriate to the planned use. If there were some way to give it an NA rating, I would.

I am pleased with how effective this antenna is. We do not live in a major metropolitan area and yet pick up 16 stations with about half broadcasting in HD. Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We bought this antenna for my low tech, no tech, father-in-law who just turned 80. He prefers free tv, so we bought this antenna to enable him to use his birthday gift a 19" lcd hd tv. This antenna allows him to view up to 20 clear channels without a cable or converter box. I tried it out in my home and got up to 40 clear channels (I'm closer to the city, so I guess I can access more channels.) The antenna may have to be repositioned to get clearer channel reception. I would have rated it a 5 but it needs to be redesigned to enable the cord to sit in place more firmly because it has a tendency to slip out and then the antenna topples over.

All radio waves, including TV are line of sight, meaning that as the earth curves, you begin to loose signal. Mountains and buildings in the way will effect the signal, however the waves also bounce off the atmosphere. Generally 12 to 20 miles, will be a very strong signal. Farther than that and a clear signal decreases rapidly depending on terrain and the atmosphere [ Danny  Apr 23, 2017 ]
I can't even get my question to register, so all I can answer is my own question. That means going elsewhere of course. Guess I'll purchase my antenna elsewhere too. [ Barbara  Aug 18, 2014 ]
This will all depend on your local areas broadcast distance, I believe you can Google the coverage areas for your location. Currently I receive channels from NY city and the antenna is inside on the North New Jersey Shore. Maybe 30 miles, and it's still spotty. [ JEREMIAH  Dec 31, 2013 ]
Dear Malinda: I can't answer your questions with exactness. I, however, have used these particular Terk HDTV antennas with multiple TVs over the past 13 years with good results. These Terk HDTV antennas would be my first choice among such antennas. Hope that this might be of some help, Malinda. Good luck. [ STEVEN R  Dec 31, 2013 ]
The maximum range is 45 miles and its range depends on your location. Our location was in a low-lying area, we could only reach a tower 14 miles away. [ WILLIAM  Dec 31, 2013 ]
