Our take on the MTX 5510-22

MTX's 55 Series subs give you huge boom for the buck, and the 5510-22 10” subwoofer epitomizes that mindset. MTX worked hard to build a high-performance sub that adds tons of bass to your system without emptying out your bank account. And MTX protects this sub with a 2-year warranty.

High thump-to-dollar ratio

MTX's 55 Series subs give you huge boom for the buck, and the 5510-22 10” subwoofer epitomizes that mindset. MTX worked hard to build a high-performance sub that adds tons of bass to your system without emptying out your bank account. And MTX protects this sub with a 2-year warranty.

Solid engineering makes great subs

MTX squeezes an oversized cone into the standard 10" frame, so the sub moves more air and gives you more bass. The woofer's movement cools the sub as it plays, so it doesn't overheat when you're rocking out. The special suspension exerts extra control when you're pushing the sub hard, so it'll handle up to 400 watts RMS. Its dual 2-ohm voice coils give you more wiring options when setting up your system.

To drive this single subwoofer, we recommend a mono amplifier rated between 300 and 600 watts RMS at 4 ohms. For more information, please refer to our article on How to Match Subwoofers and Amplifiers.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Replaced a terminator sub in my side by side. I can hear some low notes that the terminator would not produce. I have it in an SSV box that is .72cuft sealed and it rocks the block. Love.

MTX has out done themselves with the 55 series sub..I have it mounted under rear seat in my Chevy Avalanche in a .75 cu. Enclosure.. sounds is unbelievable 10" sub stops bass harder than two 12" subs together..very very very impressive sub..deep bass all day long..I'm running it in a 1 ohm mode with a MB Quart amp..its not a shallow mount sub but fits perfectly into a shallow Mo t enclosure..

Pros: Very well built design and quality sub..

Cons: I haven't found a flaw with this sub yet..

good speaker with good price

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

i installed on Scosche SET10 truck enclosure, needs to install with spacer ring , because of low profile. Sound very good , i like it , clear and deep bass. However its 2 ohm per coil, it has good sensitivity. And regarding dual voice coil u have more than one option to hook up. I recommend it. Price also nice. Thanks Crutchfield!

Pros: quality, Power, dual voice coil, sensitivity

Cons: mounting dept

Hands-on research

Product Research

Enclosure Compatibility

Dual 2-ohm Voice Coils: This woofer features dual 2-ohm voice coils, offering wiring flexibility. When the voice coils are wired in parallel the woofer presents a 1-ohm load. When the voice coils are wired in series the woofer presents a 4-ohm load.

Terminals: The woofer features two pair of heavy-duty spring post terminals which can accept single or dual (standard 3/4" width) banana plugs, pin connectors, or bare wire up to 10-gauge.

Inverted Apex Surround: The new Inverted Apex surround allows increased cone surface area, creating more air movement and higher SPL.

Progressive Suspension: The progressive suspension controls excursion at high power, thus reducing distortion and improving sound quality.

Spider Plateau Venting: Heat from the voice coil is vented through vents that surround the back of the spider. As the woofer travels back and forth, cool air is pulled in and heated air is pushed out.

Enclosure Compatibility

Sealed Box: For the best possible sound quality where space is a premium MTX recommends a sealed enclosure with an internal volume of 0.75 ft³. Sealed enclosures provide the most control over a woofer, will handle a lot of power, and provide accurate sonic reproduction, making them suitable to all types of music.

Vented Box: The recommended vented box has a net internal volume of 2.0 ft³ with a slot port 13-3/8" x 2" x 24". Vented (or ported) enclosures typically provide better overall efficiency than sealed so they are suitable for use with smaller amplifiers, giving you more bass output from less power.

Q & A

Customer Q&A

Crutchfield asked
Why did you buy this?

I picked the 5510-22 for a few reasons. I had some MTX equipment years ago that took a pretty good beating and sounded great. This speaker also fits the small under-seat box in my F150. I picked the 2 ohm because i'm only running one, and I can maximize the output of my amp with it. The 55 series is also just a good speaker. Much better than their low-end lines, and not nearly as expensive as their high end lines. [ Matt  Dec 04, 2016 ]
