Bring on the bass

If you're a bass hound, you'll find a lot to love about the Thunder Dome Series TDX65 6-3/4" 2-way speakers from MTX. They're designed to deliver extended low frequencies, so the thunder'll be rolling through your vehicle with rich, full sound. The woofer's special cone design improves off-axis response, while the silk dome tweeter brings out details you might otherwise miss. These speakers handle up to 45 watts RMS, so you crank the tunes up and still get clean sound. Grilles are included.

Note: MTX describes this model as a 6-1/2" speaker. Most manufacturers designate this same frame size as a 6-3/4" speaker. For simplicity's sake we list it as a 6-3/4" speaker.

I put these in rear doors of my wifes 06 Trailblazer, matched with the Terminator 653 three ways in front. Sound great.

Pros: Such ease of install, customized installation instructions. That's what puts Crutchfield #1 in my audio book. Great sound, no distortion & great price.

Cons: None yet

Full sound, very pleased

These were replacements for dead OEM rear-door speakers in my 04 Jetta. I'm very please with them. Connected to the OEM amp, they focus on lower frequencies, nicely rounding out the audio experience.

Great sound for the price.

Pros: Easy to install, great fit.

Best bang for your buck! im running these 61/2 up front and the 6x9 in the back straight off the head unit and they scream! they do start to distort (just a little) at full volume. I have the bass filter setting to these turned on as I have 2 12 mtx terminator series for the bass in my 1g dsm. remember distortion can be caused by lack of power.

Pros: very clear and the tweeters scream when cranked

Cons: none

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed these in my 99 jetta once the factory speakers went out. Install was simple. I was concerned about the window hitting the speaker when I rolled it down so I used the 1/4" thick rings that were in the box as a spacer and the speakers cleared the window perfectly I did have drill new holes and position them a little lower in the mounting holes but that's no biggie. I am still running the factory head unit so I'm sure they're underpowered but they still sound great with crisp highs and more bass than the factories. I'm sure they would be even better with an aftermarket deck.

When you consider the cost vs performance of these speakers I could not be much more pleased. These were not listed as a viable option for the front doors of my son's 2005 Accord sedan but they fit nonetheless. I never could figure out why they were excluded as an option and I am glad I tried them anyway. They were matched to a pair of TDX 6x9s on the rear deck. Collectively they were a huge leap forward versus the factory system speakers at those locations. The heft of these vs the factory speakers was like compared an elephant to a parakeet. We did however leave the factory Accord tweeters active in there top dash mount locations - I figured they constituted some free imaging improvement.

Pros: Price, quality, improvement over stock setup

Cons: not listed as a viable option for our application but they are so I had to swap these for a compromise first selection

Great Speakers

If you are looking for Bass at a low price, then these speakers are for you. I put them in my 1999 Mercedes ML320 and was Wowed when I turned on the stereo. These were 10x better than the Bose that was original equipment in the vehicle. Can not give anything a 5 star as there is no such thing as Perfect, but these are so very close

Pros: price and sound

Cons: Nothing

OK at low volume/Good at high volume

Paul from Tuscaloosa, AL on 1/27/2014

Bought these at the recommendation of the Crutchfield sales rep. They sound OK at lower volumes. But the more you turn it up, the better they sound. So, if you plan to listen to these at normal volumes 90% of the time, you could do better. If you like your music loud, you'll probably like these speakers. I bought them to put in my teenagers car... he likes them and they are definitely better than the OEM's.

Pros: clear sound at high volumes even at normal volume, they are an improvement over the OEM's

Cons: sound is kind of flat at normal volumes

These speakers instantly got my acceptance. I installed them in my 98 Chevy K1500 XCab replacing the stock junk. I would highly recommend using a baffle and cutting out the back to form a nice tight seal around the speakers. This helps with sound quality. This is my first set of MTX speakers and they sound awesome.

Pros: Great look, sound, and quality

Cons: None so far

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sadly, these speakers sound almost as good as the stock speakers in my '02 Silverado. They might be nice if pushed by a powerful amp, but they are not a good stock replacement. Very little bass. And, if the anemic bass wasn't bad enough, the efficiency rating is misleading. They become efficient at higher voltage, but at levels normally listened to by regular people driving around town, they actually produce less sound that the stock speakers. I don't know how these are getting so many good reviews. Maybe some vehicles have much, much worse factory speakers than my truck. It's hard to imagine anyone is really impressed with these.

Cons: They work about as well as the ACA website.

Nice Speakers

Andrewwe from Fountain Hills, AZ on 10/14/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I replaced a pair of Kicker M60s in my ski boat that were blown. These speakers have a nice rich mid-bass sound. I don't like tinny sounding speakers and these definitely are not tinny. I have a sound ordinance B-8P powered amp that delivers 60 amps per channel and I believe that matches up well with these speakers. The sound is great when I turn it up

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

bought 2 sets of these to replace the Stock Mexico made speakers that GM put in my 05 Trailblazer. I spent days researching speakers before settling on these. I am more than happy with them, I don't think it would be possible to find a set of 6 1/2 [ 6 3/4 ] speakers that does it all better than these MTX TDX65's do ! Rich deep bass, Full mid-range and crystal clear highs. You will not be disjointed MTX hit a grand slam with these, If your in the market for a set of 6 1/2 speakers stop reading and buy them now.

Pros: Well built strong heavy magnets, Exceptional sound in all ranges , Many install mounting options . 5 year warranty , All around best 6 1/2 full range speakers I have ever heard. Very Nice

Cons: No free stickers or T-Shirt came with them, C'mon MTX / Crutchfield

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Strong bass for little 6.5's. Ignore the others...they most likely have wires crossed or low power units. Tested each speaker during install while factory head still installed. They all sounded awful, tinny and hollow. I will admit, I was nervous. Cut to an hour later, my new Alpine deck is in, and these speakers rock! Solid bass, good punch, crystal clear highs. These will not shake your fillings loose, but they will surprise you.

Pros: Value Sound High quality

Cons: None

Nice lows. Picked for the reviews stating the speakers are fair speakers with stock head unit. I would say I am satisfied with the sound. Since my purchase I have purchased an amplifier and just improved an already nice speaker.

Pros: Nice lows for the price. Works well with a stock receiver.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Replaced factory speakers that failed after getting wet. Sound seems to be about the same as I remember when the vehicle was purchased and beats nothing at all. The only beef I have is with the install materials. The screws that came in the box with the MTX TDX65's were too long to use with the Crutchfield supplied mounting bracket. They made contact with the opening in the door and would not let me get the adapter bracket flush with the door. Required a purchase of screws and some wasted time. But as the title states - they sound OK to me.

Pros: Sound is good for low cost speakers

Cons: Supplied mounting bracket screws are too long for my application

I installed these in my 2013 Silverado. I was not impressed with the sound at all. Very little bass (and yes they were wired properly). Sound quality was just OK. I pulled them out and replaced them with an Infinity 6 1/2. Much better! I was told the MTX would work well with my Kenwood receiver or a factory radio. They work but no improvement over factory without an amp in my opinion.

Pros: Decent price.

Cons: Might need an amp to get good sound quality.

I was looking for a simple drop in solution to replace my factory speakers in the rear deck of my Jetta. I needed something that would sound good powered only by my (JVC) head unit. These had great specs and reviews. I'm very happy with these. Clean, not too bright, and they have very tight mid-bass for a 6.75" speaker. Perfect fit, plug and play with the included wiring adapters.

Pros: Sound great, very efficient, and a perfect fit.

Quieter than factory speakers. Bass is okay. Highs are better than average but no better than the factory 6" and tweeter combo in the front. Priced too highly for what they're worth. Based on previous reviews I was expecting much better.

Product Research

Woofer Cones: The MTX TDX series speakers feature durable and rigid polypropylene woofer cones. Polypropylene is also resistant to the moisture and temperature extremes found in automotive applications.

Tweeters: Each speaker features a 1" silk dome tweeter. Silk is lightweight and great for high frequency extension and efficiency. The tweeters pivot slightly within their housings (approximately 20° in any direction), so they can be angled toward the listeners to improve imaging.

Mounting: MTX calls the TDX65 a 6-1/2, and without using the included mounting bracket, it fits into standard 6-3/4 and 6-1/2 openings, but the bolt pattern is 6-3/4. The mounting bracket adds 0.171" to the speaker's mounting height (and subtracts 0.171" from the depth) and has the standard 3-hole 6-1/2 and Ford 4-hole 6-1/2 bolt patterns. If mounted in a 6-1/2 application without the bracket, new screw holes must be drilled.

Warranty: Although the speaker reviewed and measured (taken from our first shipment) included information indicating a 1 year warranty, MTX recently changed to a 5-Year Prorated Warranty with the following terms:

  • Years 1-2: Products found to be defective in materials or workmanship during the first two years will be, at Mitek's option, repaired or replaced by Mitek at no charge. The warranty period does not renew, but continues on from the original date of purchase.
  • Years 3-5: The purchase price of an item which becomes defective after the first two years and prior to the end of the warranty period will be prorated and credited toward the purchase of a new MTX product. The amount of proration is determined by dividing the original purchase price by the number of months in the warranty period (60), then multiplying the result by the number of months remaining in the warranty period.
