Our take on the MTX TDX692

Value and performance

If you're looking to upgrade from your factory speakers, MTX designed their Thunder Dome Series speakers for efficiency, so they'll give you plenty of performance even when powered by a factory radio. And MTX made sure that all these speakers deliver extended bass response, from the modest 3-1/2" model to the big bruiser of a 6"x9". Best of all, they're covered by MTX's unique 5-year warranty.

Step up to solid sound

The TDX692 6"x9" 2-way speakers can deliver the goods. The polypropylene woofer cone with its butyl rubber surround produces impressive bass for a rich, full sound. Add in a pivoting 1-3/16" silk dome tweeter that really lets the highs fly, and you'll hear the details no matter where you're sitting. These speakers handle up to 100 watts RMS, so you crank the tunes up and still get clean sound. Grilles are included.

I bought these 6x9s for my 2005 Honda Accord. I have never owned a pair of MTX speakers and bought them based on all the positive reviews. I agree with the majority, they sound great and were priced well. If you get these you won't be disappointed. I would recommend getting aftermarket speakers for the front as well. Once you install the 6x9s the front stock speakers just can't keep up. I chose kicker 6.5s from

Pros: Sound great. Easy install into my 2005 accord

Cons: none

Have had MTX speakers in other vehicles (still there) and they are fantastic. I had no hesitation ordering these 6x9 speakers for my travel trailer. Powered by a Pioneer head unit, they sound great! Plenty of bass and good highs. I would recommend these to anyone and have. I wish they were 2 ohm, they would be in my tundra.

Pros: Decent bass, clean highs. Great overall performance Can't beat Crutchfield for service, had these in 2 days!

Cons: Not 2 ohm

cant beat any other speaker for this price, got them on the front doors paired with some MTX TDX65s on my rear doors, and a 10'' MTX FPR 10-04 subwoofer in my 2010 Nissan Frontier, and they bump great!

Pros: price, power

Awesome speakers!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These have not disappointed so far. Bought these for my daughters' 2004 Tiburon and they sound so much better than the factory speakers it isn't funny. Great bass and low end. The midrange is a little absent, but OK. They work great for rear speakers where nobody can really sit anyways. I also added a 10" sub tube and amp I already had. The system sounds great now. The only complaint I really have is that they didn't send the right wire harness the first time. I called them and the sent a different one and you guessed it, it was wrong too. Third time was a charm, but it took a total of two and a half weeks to put the whole car back together because of the wait. Good thing she doesn't have her license yet! LOL. Good speakers though.

Pros: Good bass, sturdy construction

Cons: Long wait for correct wire harnesses.

Best bang for your buck! im running these 61/2 up front and the 6x9 in the back straight off the head unit and they scream! they do start to distort (just a little) at full volume. I have the bass filter setting to these turned on as I have 2 12 mtx terminator series for the bass in my 1g dsm.

Pros: crisp clear sound. if you are on a budget, buy them! you wont regret it!

Cons: my wife tells me to turn it down

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers sound great. I listed before and after installing my JVC receiver and the receiver does make a difference. Much better than the stock Accord speakers. Better highs and more bass. Here is the part you 1998 to 2002 accord owners should know. As another reviewer already stated: The holes do not line up so the holes need to be drilled out and installed with the hardware that comes with these speakers. That does require two people. I recommend trying to use the two rear holes as-is and drill the two closest to the seats. Crutchfield makes no mention of this, unfortunatly.

Pros: Sound great

Cons: Install require drilling holes despite Crutchfield stating that they fit.

Cons: The mounting holes didn't line up perfectly, not a big deal though.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

these speakers BLOW AWAY the competition! I bought a pair of Kenwood 6.5" 300W peak 50W RMS and they don't even come close to the power or quality of the MTX TDX692. These Speaker will work wonderful, however they do not provide enough bass just themselves. I'm a bit bias, because I'm loaded with Dual 12" 500W RMS subs. Although the bass from these alone will destroy any stock speaker in quality AND power.

Pros: Nice Bass Great Quality Awesome Price Cool Look Tough

Cons: ummm... nothing for the price these are at. Just going to throw out that there ARE better speakers out there, BUT these MTX TDX692 are unparalleled in the same price range. ... so no cons

Good bass, clear sound

Rob from MD from MD on 6/6/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nice sound, good bass. I have a 95 corvette and I am limited to what speakers I can put in back. I have a Bose in my Avalanche with great bass and clear loud music. Want that in my vette. These 6X9 speakers are 75% there. They do start clipping the sound when stereo is cranked. But I don't think I can get more out of 6X9 speakers. They are quality speakers for the price though and pretty close to loud enough for me...

Pros: Good bass, clear sounds.

Cons: Music does clip when I crank stereo. But good quality for price...

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers (although no data available on my vehicle for depth) replaced all 4 6x9 that are in the doors of my Jeep Cherokee. They fit fine (had to make spacer in back) without cutting anything! They sounded much better than teh paper factory speakers they replaced - had them running off teh stock head unit and it was nice, although when cranked up they distorted a bit. I amped them with 50w RMS from 4 channel Alpine amp and they sound ridiculously clean and loud! Wouldnt have even put sub in had I not installed that first! Has 4 Kicker KS line in other vehicle 4 doors powered w Polk 4 channel amp that put out 25w more per channel and they cannot touch these! Theyre easily worth 2x what they are charging here.

Pros: Drop right in fit. Clean loud power. Bass is strong - mids and highs are just right, not too harsh.

Cons: No cons except teh location of them low in my doors - thats jeeps fault though! Have Kicker 3.5 in dash and they are too bright - want teh mtx but not sure their version in 3.5 will fit

JosephB from Biloxi, MS on 5/1/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When you consider the cost vs performance of these speakers I could not be much more pleased. They were matched to a pair of TDX 6.5"s in the front doors. Collectively they were a huge leap forward versus the factory system speakers at those locations. The heft of these vs the factory speakers was like comparing an elephant to a parakeet. We did however leave the factory Accord tweeters active in there top dash mount locations - I figured they constituted some free imaging improvement. I do have one complaint with these and it concerns the installation. The individual round holes in these speakers did not line up with the factory drilled and tapped holes that mounted the factory Honda 6x9s on the rear deck. We had to drill out the factory holes(there was no additional room on the speakers themselves) significantly larger and had to replace the factory machine screws with nuts, bolts and washers to the tune of about $3 at Lowe's. This also required two people to get them tightened up. Kinda annoying. Most 6x9 manufacturers have oblong slots for mounting holes allowing them to accommodate more OEM bolt patterns, not so here. I would have given 5 stars here but for this issue.

Pros: Price, quality

Cons: fitment issue

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

They sound great with or without and amp. Of course, adding an amp will definitely enhance these speakers. They give great sound quality, but would be perfect if they were installed in the rear of the vehicle. The reason I say this is because I installed them in my Nissan Frontier where the 6x9s are in the front doors. There are 6.5s in the back doors up closer to my ears and I have to remove the highs on them to get better sound quality form the front. With that, the vocals and bass are originated from the floor. Anyway, great sound and bass all around. Would definitely recommend these speakers.

Pros: Good sound quality and bass. Best served with an amp installed.

Cons: None

Always Loved MTX

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Well, I have been using MTX for years. Mostly mono amps and subs. This install was on my brothers car. He didn't want a big stereo system, just replace the stock one. Changed out the stock head to an Eclipse CD5435 and the stock spkers to the MTX, no amps. The Eclipse head is clean at loud volume to about 67. The MTX's seem to be powered well by the head. I know they would be better amped. They have some good lows. Highs are a little too much but can be backed down. All in all a great set of 6X9's.

Pros: Good mid bass and can thump a little, not like a subwoofer. But does have lows.

Cons: Tweets are a little over powering with some music, but I blame more of the music and the way it was recorded. Older CD's sound better but still have to turn the highs down at times.

Bought these for a '98 Grand Prix GTP and am running them off a Kenwood KDC-X998 deck. Power wise they are efficient! I was planning on needing a amp for these, but I don't think I will. I'm very impressed with these for the money, they sound better than past purchased coupled with nice amps. Good job MTX and Crutchfield!!

Pros: Efficient. Great sound. Decent Bass!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I did a custom mount with these in the rear pillars of a 1994 Chevy extended cab. I was looking for more sound than the stock 4 x 6. These did not disappoint at all. I hooked them up with 150hz bass blockers because I am adding a 10 inch subwoofer. I was amazed at how much bass they still put out. They sound really clean when I turn up the volume too. Keep in mind I've had stock stereo equipment for a while so maybe I'm easily amazed, but I've had some really nice systems in the past though too. They blow the factory speakers away.

Pros: They are really clean sounding. They still put out a good amount of bass with a 150hz bass blocker attached. They look are feel like they are a high quality product.

Cons: It a little difficult to hold the speaker grills in place while mounting the speaker.

Pros: They sound great, at a great price. They were very, very easy to install, with Crutchfield's installation guide.

Cons: I am not aware of any.

Product Research

Woofer Cones: The MTX TDX series speakers feature durable and rigid polypropylene woofer cones. Polypropylene is also resistant to the moisture and temperature extremes found in automotive applications.

Tweeters: Each speaker features a 1-3/16" silk dome tweeter. Silk is lightweight and great for high frequency extension and efficiency. The tweeters pivot slightly within their housings (approximately 20° in any direction), so they can be angled toward the listeners to improve imaging.

Warranty: Although the speaker reviewed and measured (taken from our first shipment) included information indicating a 1 year warranty, MTX recently changed to a 5-Year Prorated Warranty with the following terms:

  • Years 1-2: Products found to be defective in materials or workmanship during the first two years will be, at Mitek's option, repaired or replaced by Mitek at no charge. The warranty period does not renew, but continues on from the original date of purchase.
  • Years 3-5: The purchase price of an item which becomes defective after the first two years and prior to the end of the warranty period will be prorated and credited toward the purchase of a new MTX product. The amount of proration is determined by dividing the original purchase price by the number of months in the warranty period (60), then multiplying the result by the number of months remaining in the warranty period.
