What a speaker

These Terminator653 6-1/2" 3-way speakers will take your in-car audio experience to the next level. The durable polypropylene woofer and Mylar dome tweeters are vast improvements over the standard paper cones used by factory speakers. With the sensitivity of these new materials, you'll gain more focus in the midrange and clearer highs, even from the power of a factory stereo. But if you have an aftermarket stereo or amp, you can listen with confidence since these puppies can handle up to 45 watts RMS. Grilles are included for custom installation.

Great price.

Great price.

Pros: Excellent matchup to my vehicle, thorough instructions, fast delivery!

Cons: Without an amp, my factory receiver makes these speakers sound as good as the factory's... rear replaced ??

Fantastic, Affordable, Quality replacement for factory craps.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great speakers that do not require the addition of an amp. Separation between the highs, mids and lows are crisp and immersive. I replaced my factory speakers in my '16 Hyundai Tucson Sport and the difference is ten-fold. An additional 10" sub-woofer really rounded out the system. I could not be happier and would put the MTX Terminator up against rival speakers from Infinity, Alpine, Kenwood and JBL. Lot's of bang for the buck here. Do it.

Pros: Price, Quality, Sound

Cons: None

I've read alot of reviews for these speakers. Alot of them said no bass. I bit the bullet and ordered a set for my 2012 Colorado. Easy install, and lot's of bass. So much in fact that my doors rattle at certain frequencies. I like them so far. i bought dynamax to take care of the rattle in the doors. I will be buying 2 more for my rear doors!!!

Pros: It does all it says and more!

Cons: More low end bass than i expected, but it's not a con for me

Pros: Affordable, great sound quality, heavy construction, great look.

Cons: Supplied adapter ring is useless for rear of Colorado...Would have purchased proper ones from Crutchfield had I known.

These replaced blown factory speakers in the rear doors. Running on the factory stereo they perform quite well. Great clarity, decent bass. I have a feeling more power, and possibly a subwoofer would create a richer, more full sound. You won't be disappointed using these as replacements. Installation was pretty easy, just had to drill new mounting holes. Pay attention to the tip, and make sure the extra wire (wiring adapter) is clear of the window. I managed to rip the wire out of the crimp connector with the power window. That meant taking the door apart again.

Pros: Good sound, easy installation, affordable price.

Cons: None.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great upgrade to a 2002 Chevy Silverado front door. I ordered these to replace a friends factory speakers which has failed. He wanted something that wouldn't break the bank but at least give him some sound (his rear speakers were out too). The install was short and sweet, no adapters required. Just drilled 4 holes per speaker and used the supplied hardware to easily secure them. Crutchfield made sure to supply the required wiring harness for easy plug and play application. We had them both in in under 30 minutes and the door panels secure. I informed him how to set up his High Pass Filter to remove damaging frequencies from ever reaching the door speakers, and he was off wondering why he hadn't done it sooner. There were other speakers in this same price category, and I've tried most of them. I was quite impressed with the overall sound of the MTX 3-way. Built to outlast the vehicle, they should give him years of good sound. You won't find a huge increase in bass, at least in the truck we installed them in, but you will find better power handling capability and more crisp sound through the spectrum. If you have a failing or cheaply designed factory system, an aftermarket set of speakers can really stand out, for hardly any effort at all with CF's useful hardware and direction. Hop in there, there's a whole world of sound waiting for you!

Pros: Built well 3-way

Cons: None to mention.

Bought these because back 2 stock speakers were blown, huge upgrade in the clarity on my pioneer head unit. Punchy bass, don't expect a lot of deep bass with this speaker. I like to hear more vocals than extreme bass so the speaker is exactly what I wanted.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These speakers brought back the highs and lows. They are not thumpers or stadium speakers, but they bring clean highs and the low end boom you expect from quality speakers. Bass drum and bass guitar sound like they should without over driving them. Voice and highs are as good as expected by only paying for a mid price upgrade from the stock speakers. Very happy with the purchase.

Pros: Easy installation with included kit. Normal loudness on Bass is clean. Great improvement over paper stock cones.

Cons: NONE!

Good quality sound. I purchased these along with an after market head unit because my factory radio had no EQ adjustment. Once hooked up it took about 4 mins of tuning the treble and bass, then frequencies to see that they were a great buy. I initially purchased these with the intent on just improving my factory sound and replacing blown factory speakers. I exceeded my expectations with these MTX TERMINATORS, although they won't rattle your windows or slam with hard bass, they will accommodate a nice subwoofer system . They have nice highs and mids once tuned.

Pros: Sound great

Cons: Don't handle any bass really....

I bought these to replace the defective speakers in my Silverado. I was concerned that I'd need to add an amp to drive these, but they sound pretty good with the stock radio. Great prices and great service!

I bought two pairs of the 653 based on the reviews. My lacrosse came with the "Bose" factory speakers which are nothing less than a rip off. They do have the label stating that they are "Bose" but is the worse attempt to make a stock speaker look like something that is not. The 653s made an impressive change into my sound system. I am very happy with the purchase.

Pros: The free mounting gear and cable harnesses made my purchase even better!

I got 4 MTX speakers for the same price I would have paid at a big box store when factoring in the extra cost of wiring that Crutchfield gives for free! First Crutchfield purchase but very satisfied. And the speakers themselves sound great! I can crank volume higher with no distortion. Install was a breeze, only needed to drill 2 additional holes per speaker and door panel went back on with no problems even with the MTX speaker grills attached.

Pros: Great price Quality sound Included extra wiring at no charge

Cons: Had to return other speakers to the big box, HAHA

Replace factory head unit with JVC KWR910BT. The factory speakers were poor at best. We following Crutchfield's installation sheet and In very little time we were enjoying terrific sound from the MTX speakers. We installed these in both the front doors and the rear deck. Wow! Great fit, terrific fidelity and very reasonably priced. The only issue we experienced was that the MTX supplied screws were too long to fasten the speaker to the adapter. We substituted shorter 6-32 x 1/2 philips head screws. Easy peasy, extremely pleased!

Pros: Wonderful full bodied sound, reasonable cost

Cons: MTX screws too long. Inexpensive and easily swapped out.... so no cons to report!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

3 of my 4 stock door speakers were blown in my 2007 Chevy Silverado Quad Cab so I decided to replace them with the MTX 653 speakers, while still keeping the stock head unit. The installation was straightforward and simple and only took a couple of hours. These new speakers sound so much better than what I had. The mids and highs stand out a lot better and the bass response is much truer and tighter. I can run my volume quite a bit higher before the distortion starts but I don't really crank my music anyways. If you want really big bass then get an amp and some subs. The only downside to the whole installation was the fact that the mounting screws to attach the speakers to the speaker adapters didn't seem like they would hold very well so I used a nut and bolt on each hole instead. I also used the Dynamat extreme speaker kit on all 4 doors to try and squeeze every last bit of performance out of these speakers and would do it again...although I have no idea how it would sound without Dynamat. All in all I have zero problems giving this product 5 out of 5 stars.

Pros: inexpensive easy install Greatly improved sound quality Speaker adapters fit door and new speakers perfectly

Cons: Screws provided for mounting speaker to speaker adapter don't provide enough holding power. Upgrade to nuts/bolts

Speakers were delivered on time. Installed fairly easy, with a little trimming needed on door panels to accomodate slightly larger speakers. Emailed instructions were helpful. I thought the speakers would give me more bass, since they were slightly larger than stock speakers. Not so. They deliver more on the high end, but not in bass region. After reading other reviews, I may have to be patient and wait for speakers to 'break in'. So far, it's been 3 weeks, and still waiting...

Pros: Good fit, easy install

Cons: Actually less bass response than stock speakers, but improved higher end response. Either I need an outboard amp, or mebbe just wait to see if speakers will 'break in' over time

Sounds good after break in period. When first installed in doors, had no bass. After 1 day of breaking in speakers, bass response improved. Speakers fit under stock door panel speaker grills, no need to use MTX grills provided. Needed to use speaker adapters provided free from Crutchfield. Slight modifications needed on speaker adapters. Had to enlarge speaker adapter holes that mount to door panel. Big improvement over factory speakers.

Pros: -high response good -power output good with stock stereo, no external amp

I installed the MTX Terminator653s to replace the stock speakers in my 11' Chevy Silverado. The speakers sound great and added a little more bass; however, I will be adding a powered sub real soon to complete the sound a little better. The install went very smooth due to the user friendly install kit and instructions.

Pros: Crisp clean sound from mid to high level volume, added a little bass.

Cons: Your going to still need to install a sub to get that premium sound if that's what you are going for.

Just bought a used 08" Envoy. 3 of the four factory speakers were blown. I bought a pair of these for the front doors and a pair of Polk DXI651S for the rear doors. The MTX is clearly the better sounding speaker in my vehicle. That is not to say the Polk isn't a fine speaker, it's just that with my stock stereo...the MTX's sound a whole lot better.

Pros: Rich sound with nice clean base, reasonable price and Crutchfield sent me the little parts (wires) I needed to do the install. What a nice repair for this vehicle.

Cons: Not made in the USA? Well maybe they are? I'm not really sure. I like everything else about them so that would be the only con.

I bought an aftermarket cd/mp3 deck for my girlfriend's 2005 Trailblazer last Christmas to replace her crappy stock stereo and when the tech installed it, he informed us that all of her speakers were blown except for the driver's side and even that one was on its last leg. So, I remembered Crutchfield from purchasing an amp the previous year before and found these awesome, kick-butt MTX 6 1/2 speakers for a decent price. I installed them along with two 6 1/2 kenwoods and the sound was Awesomely Unbelievable! My gf is happy; therefore, I am happy. Crutchfield is the best site to purchase aftermarket audio and I will definitely continue to use them in the future for all other audio purchases.

Pros: Sends everything you need for the install Great price Huge selection Fast shipping and delivery Outstanding customer service

Cons: NONE

The speakers were a snap to install. The sound was very much an improvement over the old, factory installed units (3 of the 4 had died). I expect these to last the life of the truck.

Pros: installation

Cons: none

Installed these in my Accord with a factory HU and no amp and it sounds 10x better than factory. I am very pleased with the purchase of these speakers.

Pros: Sounds excellent

Cons: Hardly any bass but that was expected.

More than I expected. :D

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was pleasantly surprised by the quality and range of sound from these speakers. Way more than I expected. I'm using these with a kenwood 50w x 4 deck mainly for the mids and highs and it fills my car with sound. I only bought 2 for my front doors but after hearing them, in definitely going to buy another pair for the rear doors.

Pros: -crisp/clear mids and highs -mounted very easily -sounds good at all volumes as long as the low frequencies are limited

Cons: The only con I've found is they can't handle too much low end at higher volumes. But if these are accompanied with a sub there's no need to run the low frequencies through them.

Tighter than stock

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Much better bass response than stock for a cleaner overall sound. Very pleased with sound. only problem with installation was with mounting speaker to adapter plate, outside diameter of adapter mounting surface just came to inner diameter of the speaker mounting holes, so had to drill inward angle thru the sidewall of mount to get screws in. For this reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5.

Pros: Tight bass and smooth all the way up to highs

Cons: Install adapter not quite large enough for MTX mount, had to hotglue and angle speaker screws into the side.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

These are some really nice speakers for the front doors. 45 watts each, and the sensitivity level is 89db, a perfect match for the alpine under the dash amp. I've listened to a variety of speakers, and I still like MTX even though I was subjective while listening to other well known brands. But I would also like to point out that there is a difference in the Terminator and Thunders. The thunders are more heavy bass driven, and have a higher sensitivity level, but depending on the vehicle, and the space, one may be a better choice over the other. Of all the full range speakers I have put my ears to I still believe the MTX has more of an accurate bass sound. If the bass is off the mid, and highs will not be appreciated as much regardless of how accurate.

Pros: Clean balanced speaker the bass doesn't overwhelm. MTX's redesign of this particular speaker produces bass sounds even better.

Cons: None.

So far, so good...

I bought these at the advice of my Crutchfield adviser Bob. I like the overall construction and I wanted something comparable to Polk audio which I am partial to. The sound is good, but I won't know the true quality until I purchase an amp to make them run more efficiently.

Pros: Good construction

Cons: smaller than I wanted since the front door stock is a 6x9

These speakers offer a tremendous value. The rear speakers in my Lexus IS300 were blown and I was looking for a high quality replacement that wouldnt break the bank. I got that in spades with these speakers. Highly recomended.

Pros: crisp sound, great price, very easy to install with all the parts provided by Crutchfield. I would never buy stereo gear from anyone else.

Cons: none

MTX hit it out of the park with these speakers. These 3-way speakers were perfect for my install. I have a Pioneer BT Receiver with 50watts x 4, and I needed speakers within that range that didn't require a lot of power. These were perfect. The sound quality is excellent and sound great throughout the whole sound spectrum. They fit perfectly in my doors as Crutchfield said they would.

Pros: Budget friendly, low wattage requirement. great sound.

Cons:

better than stock. good price.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nice step up from stock speakers. Acceptable price, fits speaker locations, easy installation. I install these in all four doors of 2012 Sonic hatchback. Still have stock receiver because of other Sync stuff, I made no adjustments to settings, just running stock. After replacing, MTX 653 were noticeably better than stock, fuller range of sound. When turning volume to prior self-determined max volume (or deal with stock distortion), MTX 653 produced crisp highs and midrange, no distortion of lows.

Pros: new 3-ways versus old stocks just sounds better, fuller range of sound. fits location as stated, 6 3/4" or 6 1/2". For the market level MTX 653 goes for, good price for entry level 3-way speakers.

Cons: installation kit fit nice into doors but screws and securing speakers to bracket kit should be better; not much plastic for screws to bite into.

Great sound for a great price!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great speakers with great sound at a great value. I installed these in the front doors of my wifes 2006 Trailblazer. She already has an aftermarket stereo so these speakers just finished that off and she is happy happy happy! The installation was easy so that made me happy happy happy. I paired with the MTX TDX65 two ways in rear doors and that's it, done deal. Open and shut case, time to rock!

Pros: Great sound, especially at higher levels. Above average at low level, where you would have it when talking to others in car, but excellent at higher level. Crystal clear highs, no bass distortion. Easy install, easy instructions, no wiring. Plug & play all the way!

Cons: Haven't found any yet

Features

Woofer Cones: The MTX Terminator series speakers feature durable and rigid polypropylene woofer cones. Polypropylene is also resistant to the moisture and temperature extremes found in automotive applications.

Tweeters: Each speaker has a Mylar dome tweeter and super tweeter for clean, accurate highs.

Speaker Size: These speakers are marketed as 6-1/2"; they will fit in standard 6-1/2" speaker openings, but do not use the industry standard 6-1/2" speaker bolt pattern (then again, neither do many car manufacturers). In order to install them in standard 6-1/2" speaker openings, one option is to drill new screw holes. If new holes are drilled in the mounting surface of the car, no bracket is needed. If drilling in the car is not an option, the included brackets can be used, which have standard 6-1/2" mounting holes and the Ford non-symmetric four hole pattern. When using the brackets the depth becomes 1.823" and the mounting height becomes 0.894". The speakers will also fit many factory 6-3/4" applications. Please refer to the Crutchfield Vehicle Selector to confirm fit in your vehicle.

Specification Note: MTX seems to list contradicting power specifications on the box; with the other specifications they list 90 watts peak, but on the front of the box they list 135 watts max power. We've adopted the 90 watt rating simply because it's the more conservative figure.

yes they will [ Maximo  Sep 23, 2016 ]
Yes they do on a Grand Prix. I didn't use the new grills that came with the speakers. I just mounted the speakers in the doors behind existing door panels. You'll need to cut the door panels if you want to use or see the new speaker grills [ Steven  Sep 23, 2016 ]

Probably not as much as your factory speakers. I've found this to be true upgrading speakers in several vehicles now: the factory speakers have lots more bass response. BUT; these MTX's will CRUSH the factory offerings in regards to clarity, accuracy, and power handling ability. Add a powered sub and you're there. The factory cones are the best compromise, but aftermarket upgrades and a subwoofer are an order of magnitude better. HTH. [ Erik  Sep 16, 2016 ]
These have decent bass at the lower wattage of a factory unit, but no very low frequencies. These truly excel in the mid frequencies where most vocals are. They have great clarity. [ Bryan  Sep 15, 2016 ]
I love these speakers. I have these in 2 cars. 6.5 Terminators in the front, and 6x9 Terminators in the rear deck. I could have put the 6.5 in the rear as well with the use of the adapter these come with. I probably would if I had it to again, at least for one of the cars. The sensitivity level is 89db. I use these with replacement head units, connected with an Alpine KTP 445U under the dash amplifier which gives 180 watts total power, or 45 watts to drive each speaker. With, or without this I believe you will be happy with them. If you have 6.5 in the rear, and the front you will get that bass your seeking. Mind you the Thunder 6.5 are 2 ways, and have a higher sensitivity level meaning these play somewhat louder, to loud for me, but personally I like the Terminators, and are my favorite speakers. I have tried a whole line of various speaker brands, that I found fault in, and my ears tell me these have the most accurate sound for bass, mids, and treble. I hope this helps?. sorry can't tell youbecause I don't know. this was for a friends custom installation. [ doug  Jan 04, 2015 ]
I doubt it, John but it's worth a try. When I bought and installed mine I simply removed the old and replaced with the new. My door panels already had factory grills. [ Timothy  Jan 04, 2015 ]
My speakers were behind the door panel with the grills built into the panel, so I didn't have seperate grills, nor did I need these. So, sorry but I can't say for sure [ Rick  Jan 04, 2015 ]
not sure. every car OEM is different. for my car, oem grills are part of door. I didn't install provided mtx grills. [ Aaron  Jan 04, 2015 ]
Yes, mount the speakers without the supplied cradles and don't use the MTX covers. [ John  Jan 04, 2015 ]
