Our take on the MTX Thunder Square TS5510-22

High-performance bass that doesn't cut corners

MTX Thunder Square subwoofers are intense and loud — and as rock-solid as the bass they deliver. Featuring a stamped steel basket, gloss black polypropylene dust cap and a raised MTX Audio gothic-style logo, these square subs move some serious air and look good doing it.

The TS5510-22 10" subwoofer handles up to 450 watts RMS. Dual 2-ohm voice coils give you extra flexibility in wiring up your subwoofer system, and they work beautifully with both sealed and ported enclosures. They work in sealed enclosures to give you tight, punchy bass, while offering resounding boom in ported boxes. Special venting keeps this sub cool while it delivers superior low-frequency performance.

Hits like a sledge hammer, i replaced a round 10" Alpine S...same box, same comparison...the MTX pounds...pushing it with a sony Xplod amp, bout 250-300 watts rms. Sealed box. Not sure if it beats the Kicker Squares though. Rubber surround is kinda flattened in the corners, i've been running it for about 1 yr so far and no problems so far. Guess i've gotten my money's worth, but then again i've always gotten good life from MTX products. I'd suggest it for the economy crowd, i think the kicker is more competition worthy in the square design, albeit at a higher cost.

Pros: Nice looking, hits hard,

Cons: big and bulky, Rubber surround flattened in corners

Square Polypropylene Cone: The Thunder Square 55 features a painted gloss-black metallic, stitched polypropylene square cone with a raised MTX Audio logo. Polypropylene is lightweight yet durable and offers efficient, dependable bass response. A square subwoofer provides 16% to 20% more area than a conventional round subwoofer.

Rubber Surrounds: The Thunder Square series woofer features a rubber surround that is stitched directly to the cone for durability. The woofer's rubber surround uses FEA optimized roll geometry to maximize excursion without sacrificing cone surface area.

Voice Coil: The woofer's voice coil is wound with 428-degree High Temperature wire to ensure reliability even at loud volumes.

Dual 2-ohm Voice Coils: This woofer features dual 2-ohm voice coils that offer flexibility in wiring. When the voice coils are wired in parallel with each other, the woofer presents a 1-ohm mono load. When the voice coils are wired in series with each other, the woofer presents an 4-ohm mono load. In addition, each coil may be connected to a different amplifier channel and each channel will see a 2-ohm load.

Spider Plateau Venting Technology: The Thunder 55 woofer uses proprietary Spider Plateau Venting technology which helps push out air out of the voice coil and bring cool air in, adding to the reliability of the subwoofer and keeping it cool even in the hottest vehicles.

Asymmetrical Linear Drive System: The woofer's Asymmetrical Linear Drive System combines a flat progressive spider with an extended pole piece to reproduce smooth, linear motion for incredibility crisp, clean sound.

Stamped Basket: The TS55 subwoofer has a black stamped basket design for structural strength, a stamped back panel with MTX's aggressive looking Gothic logo, and a large ABS plastic boot protecting the woofer's magnet.

Dual Terminals: The square woofer features two pairs of nickel-plated, spring-post terminals for attaching your speaker wire from your amplifier.

Enclosure Compatibility

Recommended Sealed Box Volume: MTX recommends mounting this woofer in a sealed enclosure made out of 3/4" MDF with an internal volume of 1.0 cu/ft.

5 Year Warranty Terms: This product carries a 5-Year Prorated Warranty with the following terms:

  • Years 1-2: Products found to be defective in materials or workmanship during the first two years will be, at Mitek's option, repaired or replaced by Mitek at no charge. The warranty period does not renew, but continues on from the original date of purchase.
  • Years 3-5: The purchase price of an item which becomes defective after the first two years and prior to the end of the warranty period will be prorated and credited toward the purchase of a new MTX product. The amount of proration is determined by dividing the original purchase price by the number of months in the warranty period (60), then multiplying the result by the number of months remaining in the warranty period.
