Our take on the CRUX SOOGM-15 GM Wiring Interface

Replacing the factory radio in many late model GM vehicles means losing the chime that warns the door is open, along with audible safety warnings. Also, your new car stereo will not work with your GM steering wheel audio controls.

You'll only be able to retain your steering wheel audio controls with a compatible car stereo made by Alpine, Clarion, Dual, JVC, Kenwood, Pioneer, or Sony. No other brands are currently compatible. Check the Details tab to see if steering wheel audio controls are retained in your vehicle.

Replacing the factory radio in many late model GM vehicles means losing the chime that warns the door is open, along with audible safety warnings. Also, your new car stereo will not work with your GM steering wheel audio controls.

The SOOGM-15 GM Class II Data Bus interface from Crux lets you install an aftermarket receiver in these vehicles and keep the door chimes, all audible safety warnings, and OnStar functionality in select GM vehicles. You'll also retain the use of your factory steering wheel controls in most vehicles (see the compatibility chart in Details — vehicles that do not retain use of steering wheel controls are marked by an asterisk).

Connect the SOOGM-15 to the wiring harness on your new car stereo, mount the module in a convenient location, and plug it into the existing factory plug. Get the great sound you want, and keep all important safety features intact. The SOOGM-15 interface works with all GM audio systems, including Premium Bose® . Warranty: 1 year.

Important Note: If you do not use an interface like this when you replace your factory radio, you will disable the audible warning system in your vehicle. Crutchfield cannot provide a free wiring harness for your vehicle, and we strongly recommend that you use the recommended interface when replacing this vehicle's factory radio. Failure to do so may result in serious injury or death.

Installation Note: If your vehicle has a factory amplifier, you'll lose fader and balance control with the new car stereo. You'll want to set your system's balance and fader controls correctly before installing the new car stereo, as those settings are retained after you've pulled out the old radio.

Note: Most vehicles will require additional installation parts — please identify your vehicle if you haven’t done so. You can also call an Advisor for more information.

  • lets you install an aftermarket receiver in late model GM vehicles without losing the door chime and audible safety warnings
  • works with any Bose® system, retains OnStar® functionality
  • retains steering wheel audio controls with a compatible car stereo in most vehicles (see chart in Details)
  • dimensions: 3-7/16"W x 1-1/16"H x 2-7/8"D

Warning! Minor issue with Sony MEX-N5100BT!

Thomas from Bozeman, MT on 9/26/2016

2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this along with a Sony MEX-N5100BT, hoping to have the steering wheel controls working in my 2004 Chevy Silverado 1500. When first installed, it did not work with the steering wheel controls, but made the new car chime sound, indicating it was plugged in. I contacted Crutchfield customer service, and after some troubleshooting, the interface was deemed defective and a replacement was shipped. The replacement had the same issue, so I next called Crux. After two phone calls where they assured me they were looking for a solution, I called a third time a few months after. A woman there immediately knew that the MEX-N5100BT had an issue that did not allow it to work as the manual stated. It was a simple fix, where the steering control portion of the menu must be switched to external, not user. Now the steering wheel controls work. Other than this, it works exactly as it should, and is now great.

Good interface

Simple add to radio to get the factory chimes and alerts back when using a custom or aftermarket radio.

Pros: - Simple install - OnStar compatible - Long wires to mount it where you want

Cons: - Long wires to bundle if leaving right behind radio - No volume adjustment - So far had not got OnStar mix to work with radio (but it might not support what I'm trying to do with Bluetooth phone)

Every thing works as it should on my 04 Silverado with onstar Bose and steering wheel controls just there is a lot of wiring to store behind the radio

Pros: Works good Keeps all factory steering controls Keeps the factory tone Bose still works

Cons: Lots of wiring to hide

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Works perfectly! Wired it up sitting in my dining room. Wires were all color coded for my vehicle, so I just matched them up. The unit and wires are a tad bulky but you can trim them down. I needed to remove a brace in the back anyways and they fit back there pretty well. Kept all steering wheel controls, door chimes, On-Star, everything.

Pros: Plug-N-Play!! Specific color coding for existing wires.

Cons: Bulky if you don't have room, but you can trim the wires down.

2003 Avalanche - CRUX SOOGM-15, not so good...

PEH from Indiana on 1/22/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This module did not exactly work in my 2003 Avalanche 1500, Base model 4WD, without On-Star, without Bose (I am not sure if this makes any difference, but my Avalanche was built for Canadian use, where it was titled and spent most of its life before I bought it in Indiana). First off it did not retain the mute or program buttons on my steering wheel. Then from day one (literally) there was a random problem with my Kenwood DPX-500BT head unit powering off and back on and eventually the chimes started sounding strange too, like they were over amplified and sometimes would remain on longer then they should. The amazing Crutchfield tech support department helped me, systematically through process of elimination, to diagnose the problem and provided replacement items with GREAT customer service (as always) until we finally got to the fact that this module was not entirely compatible with my Avalanche. At the end of it all I was provided with the GMOS-01 Interface and Axxess ASWC-1 Steering Control Module and after 1 week I have experienced no random power downs. The CRUX was an easier install than the GMOS-01 and ASWC-1, but I believe that I ended up with the better module of the options. Thanks Crutchfield for seeing this through!

Pros: Easy to install; Crutchfield's Superb Tech Support and Customer Service!

Cons: Did not retain all functions; Caused random power down of system;

disappointed in this wiring interface, it is supposed to retain your steering wheel controls (it did not do this), also retains your factory warnings and chimes (seat belts, lights, etc...), it does do this but the sound level for these is very low compared to the factory levels, was very easy to hook up

Pros: easy to hook up

Cons: did not retain steering wheel controls, sound level for chimes very low

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a terrific GM wiring interface/adapter. I used it to install a Jensen VX7020 6.2 inch navigation receiver DVD CD touchscreen double din unit in my 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche and the Jensen works perfectly including all the steering wheel functions of volume, seek, source and program. The Jensen plays as if it was factory installed. The CRUX comes with an antenna adapter so the existing car antennae will plug right into it. It also comes with good clear wiring instructions. There will be about 4 wires on it that you will not need to wire to the Jensen, although I don't have a BOSE system. It includes a wiring adapter for a BOSE. It took about two hours, easy. Crutchfield Sales recommended this unit when I called and I am so glad they did. During installation I called there technical support a few times for help and they were always available, no hold, no wait, english speaking, very knowledgeable about the product and completely answered my questions quickly and accurately. It was a GREAT experience.

Pros: Everything.

Cons: None

This unit was very easy to install in my GMC truck. The instructions were right on and everything went as planned. I like having the door chimes come through the module instead of the car stereo speakers. The only thing that would make this product better is if you could program the steering wheel buttons to do different functions.

Pros: Works great and was very easy to install

Cons: Steering wheel control was not programmable

Simple to wire up, and all the wire colors matched the pig tail harness off the deck. Has extra wiring for Bose, which my 2005 Tahoe doesn't have, so just bundled all those wire up and zip tied out of my way.

Pros: Easy plug and play install; wire colors all matched. Everything still works as it should. Even though I don't currently use OnStar, I things to remain functional as made.

Cons: No deal breakers that I've noticed.

I took my chevy silverado to a installation shop to put in a radio an amplifier.they could not get my steering wheel controls to work or my OnStarso they asked me back three times two or three different parts to get that part to work. in the meantime I pulled up the Crutchfield site I found out about the parts that I needed to order them and it took me literally 20 minutes to install the crux and radio I saved myself $800 that the sound shop was going to charge me. I'm happy with the product.I would say the adverage person can do this in one hour

Pros: easy to install and it works

I called crutchfield and after some trouble shooting we figured out the harness was bad they sent me a new one and knock on wood haven't had any more trouble with this one thank you crutchfield my new head unit sounds great

Pros: Steering wheel controls, on-star, all safety features work

Install made easy into '04 Avalanche

EG from St. David, ME on 4/9/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Used this adapter to install a Pioneer DEH-X5500HD radio in my '04 Avalanche w/o Bose Sound System. This allowed warning chime system and steering controls to remain. Although I do not use the On-Star system, it would facilitate that as well. I've installed several systems from Crutchfields, but this is the first time utilizing this type of hardware. After opening the boxes and studying the wiring , I had a few questions. I was concerned I might have to contact the manufacturer of this adapter with some of my questions, but the techs at Crutchfields came through and explained everything. After doing the wiring connections on the bench, install into my truck took less than thirty minutes!!! Note, the manufacture of this Adapter also offers free install advice, but Crutchfields had all the answers and explanations I needed.

Pros: Straight forward and simple to install. Keeping my steering wheel controls operational was important to me.

Cons: Fitting the radio, the wiring, and this adapter back into the double-din original radio space was a little difficult. I had to go back in a second time as the plug for the steering controls had dislodged itself while I was fitting everything into the space.

It works!

CRUX SOOGM-15 GM Factory Integration Adapter

JimD from East Alton, IL on 2/25/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Although the data sheet says this works on GMC Envoy from 2004-2009 the Crutchfield rep assured me it would work on my 2002 and it did. The only problem I had was with the factory, powered amplified antenna. The instructions say to connect the Blue ant wire from the CRUX harness to the radio ant control wire. There is no Blue wire from the CRUX. A call to Crutchfield found an alternative way to make it work and now it works as it should. Although the door chimes work, the volume is very low. I can not get any dimmer funtion at all but I believe that is a Kenwood problem, not CRUX. This is with the Kennwood DNX6990HD.

Pros: Lets me retain OnStar and steering wheel controls. Easy installation with the exception noted in the review.

Cons: Wiring diagram shows a wire that is not there. Required a knowledable Crutchfield tech to assist me. Low door chime volume.

The instruction manual and the wire coding on the unit itself are somewhat confusing and contradictory. I was confused on making the proper illumination and parking break connections, eventually figuring it out. after a couple of rewires, in my 2004 Chevy Avalanche. Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I successfully installed this integration adapter on my 2004 Chevy Silverado Ext. Cab w/ Bose, Onstar, XM, and Steering wheel controls. The product works just as described. I had been short sited in some of the wiring and their tech support was top notch and helpful. The item is bulky so take your time stuffing it back behind the dash and taping up any loose wires and connections

Pros: Plug and play integration is excellent, only 5 wires to connect yourself in my application, and the 8 stereor wires.

Cons: Instructions were a little confusing, difficult to stuff behind the dash, but this appears to be the same with all brands of this type of device.

It Works

Matt from Washington on 1/21/2013

2003 GMC Yukon XL

This product doesn't have many reviews so I figured I would write one to help others out. I installed this in a 2003 GMC Yukon XL with Bose and Onstar. The product looks a little daunting at first but it really isn't any more difficult than a typical stereo install. I was very pleased that Onstar, steering wheel controls and door chimes all worked without any difficult setup, it's all plug and play. As stated in other reviews I did experience the hissing noise. I believe this is due to the Bose system so if you have Bose I'm assuming you will get the hissing noise. There is a solution for it addressed in the product manual (just need to add some resistors) but I didn't fix it yet. The problem wasn't annoying enough to fix right away but I probably will fix it in the future. The hissing is really only noticeable when the music is at low volumes so I'll live with it for a little while. My only other complaint is the difficulty in setting it up. The included instructions are really confusing so I honestly don't know what I did. There is a little dial that lets you change the Onstar volume AND steering wheel controls and it isn't clear which one you are working with. Overall I am happy with the product and I would buy it again, especially considering it is the cheapest way I found to get a new head unit in my car and keep my steering wheel controls. I hope this review was helpful. Here is a link to the manual

Pros: Cheapest and most simple way to get a headunit in your car and keep steering wheel controls.

Cons: Hissing noise

Works perfectly with my Onstar, SW control and Bose. I was worried at first with the instrucitons as the Onstar did not work when I had just the Crux installed. Once I hooked up the head unit, everything worked perfectly.

Pros: All in one. Wiring instructions were good.

Cons: Not for fault of Crux, but one of the couple of wireless did not match. Blue white to Blue and Red from Pioneer was more like a Red\Orange blend.

2005 Silverado 2500 Install

Drew from Cutler, IL on 1/7/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I installed this CRUX unit in my father's 2005 Chevy Silverado 2500 pickup. I paired it with a Kenwood DPX-308U receiver and I'm thrilled with the results. All of the steering wheel controls work as expected, door chimes worked without a hitch and the BOSE system sounds phenomenal. I wasn't aware before the install, but he does not have OnStar so I was unable to test this capability. I had a couple of minor questions, and the CRUX tech support team was very easy to reach and very knowledgeable.

Pros: Worked exactly as advertised and is relatively easy to install. Great tech support team and overall a very good product

Cons: One minor nit pick: the control unit is rather large and can be a bit cumbersome to fit behind the new radio.

GMC 2006 Sierra - Real input

Geno from Colorado on 12/30/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I just installed this on a 2006 GMC Sierra with the Bose system. The basic results are it worked. Several comments. If you hook up a back up camera like I did you have to go find the input on your vehicle for the reverse lights and also the parking brake. Not easy. The chimes come ouf of a small speaker on the Crux unit and are very soft and hard to hear. If you have a 2004-2006 with the Bose system you have to install the resistors (not included) they have in their instructions as the unit has a lot of hiss in the speakers. You cannot program the steering wheel controls but they do work as they did prior to the install. You do lose your backseat stereo if you have this option.

Pros: Works!

Cons: Very hard to put all the wires and module into the dash the way they have taped up the wiring harness. Soft sound of chimes that you can't hear if the radio is on driving. No resistors for the radio hiss. Mute wire is very mysterioius and you really don't use it. Have to wire to the reverse and parking inputs somewhere in your vehicle especially if you have a back up camera

NOT SURE, seened to work ok, but

Unit hooked up fine, straight forward ,but ran into a problem with the HU turning of,f tack on,then back on, Crutchfield said it was most likely the Crux, sent it back, got another, same problem .Not convinced it was the problem, but a new HU didn't fix the same problem of random shut down either. SWC worked great, chimes weren't loud at all however. Now, trying the more expensive is going less well...

Pros: price, ease of install

Cons: cramped install, read review

Works well in 2006 GMC SIerra 1500, one issue to note re: Onstar

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This mated right up to my factory harness and my JVC Arsenal head unit. There is quite a bit of stuff (black box and wires) to tuck in the dash, but I had room in my 2006 GMC Sierra 1500. This came with a mini antenna adapter, which is necessary because the antenna plug size in my GMC (maybe all GMs?) does not fit the back of the stereo. I mention this since Crutchfield put an adapter in my cart, but I took it out since the kit comes with one. The chimes come out of the black box. They are not as loud as the factory chimes, but I can hear them just fine. Even though I do not have Onstar, I bought this to use my steering wheel controls and to keep my chimes. The top leftmost button on my steering wheel has a talking face picture on the button. I've always used it to mute my stereo. This button no longer acts as a mute with this kit. I called CRUX and was told that they did not program in mute functionality for non-Onstar vehicles. I don't know what this button is supposed to do in vehicles with Onstar.

Do not buy this!!

2002 GMC Envoy
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this adapter to retain the chimes and steering wheel controls for our 2002 Envoy in August 2012. We noticed right away that the chimes would sometimes be loud, sometimes you couldn't hear them at all. The buzzer built into this unit sounds cheap to begin with. Also, only the volume up and down button on our steering wheel works; the mode change button does not. When the weather started getting below 50 degrees outside we noticed our Envoy would not start and had to be jump started. After we took the adapter out of the vehicle we noticed our Envoy would have no problems starting up even when cold. Of course we have no radio without this harness. I like Crutchfield's support on this but I do wish I could exchange it for just a wiring harness. I don't care about chimes or the steering wheel controls. I tried calling the manufacturer and their support has been less than helpful and their employees are rude.

Cons: Cheap buzzer for the chimes; the unit we have drains the battery for no reason.

Easy OnStar integration

DerekAJ from Smyrna, TN on 12/10/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Crux SOOGM-15 adaptar was easy to install, and allowed me to keep access to OnStar as well as my steering wheels controls when I upgraded my head unit to a new Kenwood. Programing the volume settings for OnStar was quick and easy. The factory wiring harness plugged in perfectly.

Pros: You get to keep your factory OnStar and Steering wheel contrcols. Easy Install. Much easier than the last steering wheel control kit I added to my Nissan Maxima a couple of years back.

Cons: The one suggested improvement would be to provide access to the factory microphone. You need to have a head unit with a microphone option. This is probably more a limitation of the head unit and how your phone interfaces via bluetooth, however.

2003 Chevy Suburban install

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Ordered this so that I could switch my factory radio to an aftermarket JVC. I was a little bit hesitant after reading a couple of earlier reviews, but this was the best priced product I found that would also allow me to keep using the steering wheel controls which is important to me. After a quick and fairly simple install, everything works as promised. Steering wheel controls, Onstar, all factory features all working as they should. Very satisfied with my purchase.

Pros: Inexpensive, simple to install

Cons: Instruction sheet included with the product isn't very easy to follow. I found a video online which was way more helpful.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After researching differnt interface boxes,This was the only one that I could find that offered steering wheel controls without having to purchase a whole another box. After reading mixed reviews I decided to go ahead and give this one a shot,After checking if it would work both in my vehicle and my new Kenwood headunit. With consulting both the instructions of the interface box and the headunit, wiring up the harness was pretty simple and the connectors matched my vehicle perfectly. So far everything is working as it should with no problems.I gave it four stars because the interface box is quite large and I think it would be a problem for cars with smaller dashs.

Pros: Did what it said it would do.Retained OnStar,Warning Chimes,Steering Wheel Controls.

Cons: Interface box is a little bulky and might be a problem fitting in smaller dashs,But it fit perfectly in my Avalanche.Directions were a little lacking but I had no problems

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So I bought this because it said I would retain my steering wheel controls, I followed and wired everything up. I wired the remote wire to the kenwood receiver and followed the program instructions. No steering controls, looked up the harness and apparently there's a list which specifies what vehicles will not retain the controls. Disappointed that it was listed as a harness that would work and a huge price difference for a feature that did not work.

Pros: On star works, chimes work

Cons: Steering wheel controls only retained on certain vehicles not all, but will still be listed to work on your vehicle.

Second unit and the steering wheel controls don't work on either unit.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Everything works good except the steering wheel controls. Returned the first one I bought from Crutchfield and they sent another, well it doesn't work as well. When the car is parked for a long time in hot weather the SWC work until the air conditioner cools everything, then no SWC again.

Cons: SWC's do not work.

Perfect all the way around...

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit didn't have very many reviews anywhere I looked on the internet, and I was a little hesitant at choosing it when I placed my order. However, the description of the unit seemed like it would do exactly what I was looking for, retain chimes, OnStar, steering wheel controls, and Bose amp in my 2006 GMC Envoy Denali. I was hooking up a Kenwood DDX419 to replace the factory CD player (6-disc). The installation instructions included with the unit were a little lacking, otherwise I would have given it 5 stars. I did have to call CRUX customer support with a couple questions that arose due to the lack of information in the instructions. I was connected to a live technician within a minute and his product knowledge was great. He answered my questions and off I was to install. There were no issues with the installation, everything works exactly as it said...I have my OnStar, steering wheel controls, chimes (from the interface itself), and the sound is pushed to the factory speakers through my factory BOSE amp. I'm very impressed with this unit. Don't let the lack of reviews shy you away from this interface. It's a great bang for your buck in my opinion. It does exactly what it says. Don't be afraid to call their support line if you have questions about the install process. Great job CRUX...right price too!

Pros: Price Retains chimes, steering wheel controls, OnStar, and factory Bose Amplifier Great customer support on phone

Cons: Installation instructions are a little lacking.

CRUX SOOGM-15 GM Interface

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

very meticulously followed all intructions, called C Help twice re. steering conrtols, was told that since Kenwood bought JVC a year ago...that I needed to connect the blue-yellow wire labeled "Kenwood steering control" to the blue-yellow wire from JVC unit. Soldered all connections plugged it in and it worked flawlessly except for steering controls. Called C Help again only to be told that there have been several reports of problems with this "unit" and they might need to send me another. I really want interactive control from the steering controls...I guess that I need to keep trying to make this work.

Pros: the JVC radio and aux player sound great and I have no problem with it...only problem is with the steering controls integration

Cons: CRUX SOOGM-15 GM Interface...I can't make it work after following all instructions and advice from Crutch help

Overview: The CRUX SOOGM-15 radio replacement interface is designed to allow the installation of an aftermarket radio while retaining functionality of OnStar, Bose Amplified and Non-Amplified Systems, Chime, and Accessory features in a wide range of GM Class II Data bus vehicles. The SOOGM-15 is a versatile and enhanced OnStar retention interface that includes steering wheel control options. It retains a wide range of factory OEM features with aftermarket radios:

  • Retains Factory OnStar and steering wheel controls for most vehicle models (steering wheel incompatibility noted in the table below)

  • Illumination Output (2A. max)
  • Telephone Negative Mute Trigger (Input)
  • Low Voltage (Battery Run-Down Protection)
  • Retains safety & warning chimes
Note: You'll only be able to retain your steering wheel audio controls with a compatible car stereo made by Pioneer, Sony, Jensen, Dual, Alpine, Clarion, Kenwood, and JVC. No other brands are currently compatible.

The steering wheel control output consists of a right-angle 3.5mm connector and a light blue/yellow wire (use the connection that your aftermarket head unit is fitted with). The SOOGM-15 interface module will work with any of the listed aftermarket head units, by using its rotary dial (0-5) for appropriate setting.

Installation Note: For vehicles with factory Y-91 Bose Premium audio systems, once you have installed the new aftermarket head unit you will no longer have fader control.
