Overview

Our take on the Pro-Ject MaiA

The Pro-Ject MaiA's modest 2 x 25-watt power rating might not sound like much, but don't be fooled. When we connected this little powerhouse to a pair of floor-standing speakers in the Crutchfield Labs, it flooded our listening room with rich, detailed sound without ever breaking a sweat. The ultra-compact MaiA is perfect for powering a pair of bookshelf speakers to satisfying sound levels in a bedroom, dorm room, or home office. And if you ever need more bottom end, you can connect a powered sub to the MaiA's subwoofer output.

Pro-Ject MaiA integrated amplifier

The Pro-Ject MaiA can handle all your music sources. You get three stereo RCA inputs (including a phono input), plus optical, coaxial, and USB digital audio inputs, as well as Bluetooth for wireless music streaming.

Surprisingly powerful (and tiny)

Connect with all your music

With its built-in digital-to-analog converter, Bluetooth streaming, and wide array of analog and digital inputs, you might think that the MaiA was a full-size integrated amp. But when you see it in person, it's astonishingly small — easily capable of being tucked away in a bookcase or used in a versatile desktop system. The MaiA's compact, all-metal chassis boasts connections for up to nine audio sources, including a high-quality phono input for your turntable. And thanks to  Pro-Ject's extensive experience in the world of vinyl music, the MaiA's phono preamp delivered awesome sound when we hooked it up to one of our turntables in the Labs.

High-res audio

High-resolution sound, and more

Noise issued from most channels. I returned it.

Jeff from Troy, OH on 4/22/2018

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Hopefully the unit I received was an anomaly, but noticeable noise was emitted from most channels. The pitch of the noise varied as the volume was turned up and down. Additionally, the volume control was very stiff - some weight is nice but this was ridiculous. I immediately returned the unit for a refund. It's a good looking amp, and the materials are nice, but I got a bad one. Proceed with caution.

Pros: Lots of input channels, nice materials.

Cons: Noisy, stiff volume control.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm impressed. The Maia sounds as good as any classic entry level hifi amp, but at the footprint of a tablet. Tiny. Solid. I mulled over the extra cost compared to the NAD D 3020 but in the end it was worth it for the extra inputs and metal build quality. I have a CD player connected via coaxial, video games and tv via Toslink, the Bluetooth antenna for iPhone streaming, and there are still plenty of inputs left over. Looks really handsome with any of the Pro-Ject Box Design series (although the display lights are a different shade of blue than on the CD Box S.

Pros: size, sound quality, build quality, inputs

Cons: price

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This integrated amp is amazing. The clarity and power available from such a small unit is phenomenal. Hooked up a NAD D7050 a day before and was disappointed with the lack of power and tinny sound. At a third the size and with additional functionality like the phono stage and analog inputs this Pro-Ject blew me away. Sounds great driving my 4311's

Cons:

You have to hear this amp!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A remarkable integrated amplifer! Don't let it's size fool you! Fully capable of life like dynamics. Driving Martin Logan's. What separates this amp from others I listened to, is the clarity and contrast to musical instruments and voice. I can see into the sound stage and discern the instruments. I've been around hi end audio and was looking for a simple all in one integrated that would give me a jump into dig!ital with built in high quality dac and Bluetooth. And 9 inputs and remote. I highly reccommend this, a taste of what Hi End audio is without spending a ton. Plenty of power, 37W at 4 ohm, 25 W at 8. I bought it based on Garrett's reccomendation, nice work Crutchfield.

Pros: Life like sound, surprising dynamics, 9 inputs built in 192 DAC, Bluetooth 4.0, remote and a great sounding headphone amp.Output to connect to external amp

Cons: none.

Features

Stereo Integrated Amplifier: The Pro-Ject MaiA integrated amplifier is rated at 25 watts x 2 channel @ 8Ω or 37 watts x 2 channel @ 4Ω.

24-Bit/192kHz DAC: The Pro-Ject MaiA utilizes a 24-bit/192kHz Texas Instrument multi-bit delta-sigma DAC (PCM1796) for exceptional sound quality from the unit's USB-B input, optical & coaxial digital inputs, and built-in Bluetooth.

Asynchronous USB-B Input: The Pro-Ject integrate amp provides a USB-B input to connect your Windows PC or Mac computer for playback of compressed and high-res music files stored on your laptop or desktop. The unit's USB-B input bypass the inferior DAC in your computer and utilizes the 24-bit/192kHz DAC of the MaiA for exceptional sound quality. Asynchronous technology allows the digital clock inside MaiA to control the flow of data coming from your computer. This method of communication leads to less jitter (timing errors) for the unit's built-in DAC to deal with which results in clearer more defined sound.

Note: Windows PC will require a USB Class 2 driver that is installed on the included CD-ROM. Mac computers do not require a separate USB driver.

Built-in Bluetooth w/ aptX: The MaiA offers built-in Bluetooth (version 2.1+EDR) for wireless music streaming of stored music and music apps on your Bluetooth-enabled Apple iPod/iPhone/iPad, Windows PC/Phone, Mac computer/laptop, and more. In addition to support for the standard SBC Bluetooth audio codec, the MaiA offers support aptX for higher quality audio streaming from select Android devices. aptX audio coding technology provides even better sound quality with lossless, CD-quality streaming for compatible aptX-compatible smartphones, like many Android smartphones with OS 4.0+. The MaiA can pair with up to 8 Bluetooth devices, but only one can be used at a time. You'll still continue to use your Bluetooth device to control music playback and view song/artist information.

Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Pro-Ject MaiA.

Optical & Coaxial Digital Inputs: The Pro-Ject MaiA features two optical (toslink) digital inputs and one coaxial (RCA) digital input to connect your Blu-ray/DVD player, cable/satellite box, game system, or TV. These digital inputs will accept 2ch PCM only. The optical digital inputs support up to 24-bit/96kHz, while the coaxial digital input supports up to 24-bit/192kHz.

Line-Level Inputs: The MaiA includes two sets of stereo RCA inputs for connection of an analog audio device, like a CD player orAM/FM tuner.

Phono Input: The Pro-Ject integrated amplifier is equipped with a Phono input for connection of a turntable with an MM or MC cartridge.

Binding Post Speaker Terminals: The MaiA integrated amp is fitted with two pair of binding post speaker terminals which will accept bare wire (up to 12AWG), pin-connectors, spade-connectors, and banana plugs (single only).

Headphone Jack: There is a 1/4" headphone jack on the front-panel for connecting a set of headphones (16-600 ohms).

Variable Line-Level Output: There is a variable line-level output (3.5mm) which allows you to connect a powered subwoofer or second zone amplifier.

Simple Control: The Pro-Ject MaiA includes an IR remote control for wireless operation of the integrated amplifier. Control options include Power On/Off, Input Select, and Volume Up/Down. These same controls are also located on the unit's front-panel.

Metal Chassis: The MaiA features a metal casing which effectively protects against interferences. The MaiA is available with silver or black faceplates.

External AC Power Supply: The Pro-Ject MaiA operates off of standard household current using the supplied external AC power supply and detachable AC power cord.

Crutchfield asked
Why did you buy this?

This is the amplifier my son will impress his friends with then they laugh at the lack of VU meters and fancy lights. While you could save $50 or $100 on the bottom line, the bottom line is this little amp has the goods that are worth the money. The specs are in the hi-end of the market and has features you might expect on a bookshelf system (bluetooth, DAC, headphone). [ clayton  Aug 18, 2017 ]
