Solid product

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Does its job. I like how you can listen to vinyl as it should be while it simultaneously puts data on pc to convert to digital with tge free audacity program they recommend. It's solid. The rca cables i have are tight and was able to push into this. Thick so it blocks outside waves from close by speakers or power cables. Nothing flashy. Just does its job well.

Pros: Blocks outside power cable or speaker magnet interference. Plays to receiver and pc ( for digitizing) at same time. 2 year warranty

Cons: Nothing.

I LOVE This Device

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It has been 10-15 years since I've been able to play my record collection due to the newer technology receivers not having a Phono input. Attempting to connect to an AUX input did nothing as (I'm not an electrical engineer) apparently the old-school technology to use a turntable didn't come in the receivers I had. This device is wonderful, couldn't be easier to install and set-up, it even has the ability to connect to my PC via USB should I want to make digital copies of my records in the future.

Pros: Easy to Set Up No bad electronic noises only sweet turntable music

Cons: None Yet

Great little Genie !!!

First about the Pro-Ject Phono Box USB Great little genie, for the price and fidelity you cannot go wrong. Connected my Denon 300 F with Ortofon 2M Red cartridge to this phono preamp and output to Marantz SR7010. WOW !! the music comes alive , the difference is night and day. Agreed , compared it to the SACD output from Oppo 103 it is a few db less but all you need is to increase the volume a few notches and your soul will tell you.The clarity is just amazing and the bass ,more pronounced. This baby rocks! It is compact and heavy and fits in the cabinet and absolutely no hum. and very less static ( that alone makes the experience more enjoyable! ) Haven't tried to connect USB to computer yet. That's my project for the next couple of weeks to convert into FLAC and backup my collection. The first one I received from Crutchfield had no rattle but a noticeable "hum" and tremendous amount of static. Changed the cork mat with a Swiss leather mat to see if the static will go but nothing changed. Tried all kinds of grounding mechanisms - still no luck. Called Customer service and they shipped immediately a new one . Connected the new one and total bliss , Thank you Crutchfield for the quick response

Pros: Compact, heavy and well made Great fidelity and brings alive each and every instrument Exceptional bass Secure connections Great Crutchfield customer service

Cons: None so far except for the defective initial one

Easy To Install

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Well built, solid, phono pre-amp with USB. The Phono Box USB small size makes it easy to place near my computer and turntable and not take up space. The box mine came in mentions 'faceplate in silver or black' but that could mean whichever color is available when Pro-Ject ships it, there are not two different color faceplates in the box. Software not included, If you are converting vinyl LP's to iTunes or other digital format the various software out there will take some time and patience to get decent results. (Audacity, Vinyl Studio, etc.) I've seen YouTube videos explaining how to convert LP's to digital using a Mac and Garage Band but I've not tried it yet.

Pros: solid metal construction, small size. It has rubber feet to protect surfaces.

Cons: Those with poorer eyesight might need a magnifying glass to read the instructions pamphlet. There may be other info you need on the FAQ's on the Pro-Ject website.

Just what I needed

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Super easy to use, just connect your turntable to the box and the box to your computer, then download the free Audacity software and you are ready to go.

Pros: Easy to get setup and running.

Cons: Software is very complex and almost like a mini recording studio. It will take some time and practice to learn all the things you can do with it.

Good Phone Preamp

Groove Monster from Atlanta GA on 12/6/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am very pleased with my purchase of my Pro- Ject Phone Box USB. It is a great way to interface any turntable to a receiver or powered monitors or a pro mixing console. The unit is small and heavy for its size. It is well made and has setting for Moving Magnet and Moving Coil Cartridges. The USB output is great for sending the audio from your Turntables to computer or other storage device. After recording some select albums to my computer and comparing them to their CD versions of the same titles, I notice there is a dramatic difference coming from the analog source compared to the CD, better stereo imaging and clarity of all instruments and voices. This unit is well made and has solid connections on the back as well as a place to ground your turntables. It uses a ac adapter for its power but has no power light or power button so its always on. Crutchfield is a great company and had this unit at my doorstep in 2 days.

Pros: Small, well made, good performance and price point. Easy to hook up.

Cons: None

Phono (MM/MC) Preamp: The Pro-Ject Phono Box USB allows you to connect a turntable with either a MM (moving magnet) or MC (moving coil) cartridge to today's home receiver's and amplifier which do not offer a dedicated phono input. There is a button on the back of the unit which allows you to switch between MM or MC mode.

Metal Case: The Phono Box USB's metal case shields the electronics from vibration and electromagnetic interference.

Dual-Mono Circuitry: The Phono Box USB provides optimal channel separation through dual-mono circuitry and low-noise ICs.

RIAA Equalization: The Pro-Ject Phono Box USB provides amplification and RIAA equalization for both MM and MC cartridges.

RCA Connections: The Phono Box USB features gold-plated stereo RCA connections. A stereo RCA input connects your turntable, and a stereo RCA output connects your home receiver or amplifier. RCA cables sold separately.

Ground Terminal: The Phono Box USB also has a turntable ground, in case your turntable has a separate ground lead. This provides shielding to the tone-arm and the sensitive circuitry in the turntable.

A/D Converter with USB Output: The Phono Box USB features a built-in A/D converter (Burr Brown PCM2904 16-Bit Delta Sigma) with a mini-USB (type-B) output to record your vinyl music to a Windows PC or Mac computer (USB cable not included). The unit supports sampling frequencies of 32, 44.1, and 48kHz. Your computer must have a suitable recording program installed (the Phono Box USB does not provide built-in recording software).

Note: Runs on Windows (XP/Vista/7) and Mac OS (operating systems). Automatic recognition, without additional driver, by standard PC.

Outboard Power Supply: The Pro-Ject Phono Box USB operates off of standard household AC current, using the supplied AC power adapter. The external power adapter is separate from the phono preamp to further improve sound quality.

  • Input: 100-240V~50/60Hz, 0.6A

I do not have to adust the volume. You probably need to press the cartridge selection button in the back of your preamp. I noticed the the factory setting was wrong for my cartridge and the output was low. Good luck. [ KEN  May 12, 2017 ]
I haven't noticed that. I think the volume is the same for all the components on my audio/video setup and it isn't anything fancy. [ ANDREW M  May 12, 2017 ]
Not that I have noticed we run ours through a Rotel system and seems to be at the same volume as blutooth, TV or other inputs. [ Hudson46  May 12, 2017 ]
As long as your favorite software (or app) you want to use runs on Windows 8, Pro-Ject will be be happy with your new laptop and W8. [ Marinos  Apr 19, 2015 ]
It is compatible with any computer. All you need to do is download a program like Audacity. [ Winston  Apr 14, 2015 ]
It depends on whose recording software you're using. I'm using VinylStudio (nice program) on Windows 7, though they claim compatibility also with Win 8. alpinesoft DOT co DOT uk [ Robert  Apr 14, 2015 ]
We use our unit with an Apple Laptop and it works just fine. Have not used it with Windows 8. Seems like a quality unit though. [ Thomas  Apr 14, 2015 ]
If I understand your question correctly, you want to connect the USB out on your PC and send the signal to an amplifier for driving speakers. No that won't work because the USB is a digital signal. Amplifiers and speakers require an analog signal. Also, the USB port on the Pro-Ject Phono box is an output. The PhonoBox takes the unamplified analog signal from the phonograph and digitizes it and sends it to the USB port as digital signal your PC can read. You can't do this process in reverse by sending a digitized signal to the PhonoBox through it's USB port. Hope that answers your question. [ Rob  Dec 15, 2014 ]
Not sure if i understand your question. Pro-Ject Phono Box USB is a pre-amp for connection between turntable and amplifier, or output to computer's USB port should you wish to digitize analog LPs (works very well with Vinyl Studio's software). Re: computer connection to stereo: I have a Pro-Ject Receiver Box S, and simply run a 3.5mm mini plug from computer's audio output into input 2 on back of receiver. An option is to get a 3.5mm Mini Plug to RCA cable, and run to the typical 2 RCA inputs on rear of receiver. [ Robert  Dec 14, 2014 ]
It seems your question is confusing and is not about this product and its intended use. Please resubmit your question in a clear and concise format and I will do my best to give you an honest response. [ Winston  Dec 14, 2014 ]
