Etymotic Research ER20XS
Universal-fit earplugs for musicians
Our take on the Etymotic Research ER20XS by Crutchfield's Jeff Miller
A more natural earplug experience
Sure, those dime-a-dozen, disposable foam earplugs they hand out at loud events will protect your ears in a pinch. But I think the Etymotic Research ER20XS earplugs offer major benefits to gigging musicians, motorsport fans, and frequent concertgoers. These earplugs do an excellent job at reducing sound levels — 20 dB to be exact. But more importantly, they do so while preserving the sound in your environment, so you hear the world more naturally.
The ER20XS earplugs come with an assortment of ear tips, carrying case, and a detachable cord
How they work
These earplugs fit deep — the three different pairs of ear tips will help you find a secure fit. Once you have them in, Etymotic's internal noise-filtering system mimics the natural response of the ear canal. Sound levels are reduced evenly across the frequency range of human hearing.
The result? Music, speech, and atmospheric sounds come through clear and natural — only quieter.

Hearing Protection: The ER 20xs Universal Fit earplugs use a tuned resonator and acoustic resistor to replicate the natural response of the ear canal. Because of this unique design, the earplugs don't change the quality of the sound, but evenly lowers it by 20dB to a safe level, so music and speech remain clear. The ER 20xs earplugs are ideal for use musical venues, including concerts and clubs. They can also be used when you just want some peace and quiet. The low-profile earplugs do not protrude beyond the plane of the outer ear, making them ideal for wearing under a hat or other headgear. Small flexible pull tabs let you easily remove the earplugs.
Eartip Assortment: The ER 20xs Universal Fit earplugs come with two sizes of 3-flange eartips (standard and large), and a pair of foam eartips. The foam eartip is designed to be compressed before inserting into the ear canal. Once inserted, the foam expands to create a tight seal to block external noise.
