Sources: The HX-D77 is equipped with a 5-disc slim-tray DVD/CD changer, an AM/FM tuner, a USB input for playing PC audio, and a front panel A/V RCA input for a game console or auxiliary source.

Dual Amplification: This unit has dual amplifiers for each speaker with 90 watts per channel for the main drivers and 180 watts per channel for the subwoofers.

Disc Compatibility: This unit will play DVD-Video, Video CD, Super Video CD, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, Audio CDs, CD-Rs, CD-RWs, and MP3, WMA, and JPEG files recorded onto CD-R or CD-RW discs. The unit will also accommodate 3" (8 cm) discs when placed in the center of the disc tray.

MP3/WMA/JPEG Notes: When recording MP3, WMA, and JPEG files for playback on this unit, the discs must conform to the following standards:

  • MP3/WMA: MP3/WMA files must be recorded using ISO 9669 Level 1 or 2 at a sampling rate of 44.1 kHz and a bit rate of at least 64 kbps (128 kbps is recommended).
  • JPEG: JPEG files should be recorded at a resolution of 640 x 480. Larger files will take a long time to appear. JPEG files can be played manually, or in a slide-show. You can zoom in on a JPEG image to one of three magnifications. While zoomed, you can use the arrow keys on the remote to pan around the picture.

Play & Exchange: Since the discs are loaded into individual trays, you can exchange discs in any of the inactive trays without interrupting the currently playing disc.

Child Lock: This feature allows you to lock the disc trays to prohibit discs from being ejected.

On-Screen Display: During disc playback, the unit automatically outputs a control screen on your TV, either in the form of an On-Screen Bar, or a larger Control Screen. Disc status, chapter and track names or numbers, and time indicators, as well as indicators concerning multiple languages, subtitles, or view angles, appear on the On-Screen bar. The Control Screen appears during MP3/WMA and JPEG file playback to indicate file, folder, track, and group information.

Search: You can search for a particular portion of a disc in either direction at the following speeds: 2x, 5x, 10x, 20x, and 60x. No audio can be heard while searching DVD, SVCD and VCD discs. Note: The search feature does not work with MP3/WMA discs.

Slow Motion: You can play a VCD or SVCD in forward direction and a DVD in either direction at the following slow motion speeds: 1/2x, 1/4x, 1/8x, 1/16x or 1/32x.

Frame-by-Frame: While in the pause mode, you can advance the picture forward frame-by-frame with each press of the Pause button.

Zoom: Using the Zoom feature, you can enlarge the video on the screen to up to six magnifications: Zoom 1 through Zoom 6. While zoomed, you can use the arrow keys on the remote to pan around the picture.

Angle/Audio Soundtrack/Subtitle: During DVD Video playback, you can select multiple angles, audio soundtrack, or subtitle languages, when they are included on the disc. A special on-screen icon will appear when such options are available.

Video Adjustments: You can select a preset picture tone or adjust it and store your own picture preference in one of two User Settings. Presets include Normal and Cinema. User Settings allow you adjust the following picture parameters: Gamma, Brightness, Contrast, Saturation, Tint, and Sharpness.

Clear Voice: When playing a multi-channel DVD you can increase the output level of the center channel using the Clear Voice feature. When Clear Voice is activated, the dialog becomes easier to understand, even at low volumes. Clear Voice can be used for other discs when a 3D Phonic Mode is selected.

Dynamic Range Compression: When playing a Dolby Digital encoded DVD, you can compress the dynamic range so you can enjoy powerful sounds even at a low volume level. This is sometimes called Night Mode or Midnight Mode.

DVD Level: The audio tracks on a DVD Video is sometimes recorded at a lower level than for other discs and sources. You can select one of three increased DVD Levels (DVD Level 1, 2 or 3), so you don't have to adjust the volume every time you change the source.

Repeat Play: The repeat modes for each disc type are as follows:

  • DVD Video:
    • During Playback: Chapter, Title, All
    • Before Playback: All
  • MP3/WMA: Track, Group, Disc, All
  • JPEG: Group, Disc, All
    • During Playback: Track, Disc, All
    • During Program Play: Step, All
    • During Random Play: Step, Disc, All

A-B Repeat: When playing a disc with the on-screen bar displayed on your TV, you can select a portion of the audio or video disc to play repeatedly. This is possible only within the same track or DVD title.

Program Play: Up to 99 tracks can be programmed and played in any order. Once the tracks are programmed, you can use Repeat Play to repeat only the programmed tracks or one individual track. During Program play, you cannot open any of the disc trays. The program is stored in memory, even if the unit is turned off. The program can be erased manually, or it will be erased if the AC power cord is unplugged or there's a power failure. Note: Program play cannot be used for MP3/WMA discs.

Random Play: The tracks on all of the loaded discs can be played at random. Random play will end when all of the tracks on all of the loaded discs have been played. You can also repeat all discs or one individual track during random play.

AM/FM Tuner: This system has a digital AM/FM Tuner. You can store up to 45 station presets (30 FM and 15 AM) so that you always have easy access to your favorite stations without having to tune them in manually each time. The tuner has three tuning modes: Manual, Preset, and Auto (seek) tuning. If you are listening to an FM station in stereo and the reception is weak, you can improve the sound quality by switching to Mono.

Game/AUX Input: The unit features a front panel A/V RCA auxiliary input. You can connect a video device such as a game console or VCR, or an audio device such as a portable MP3 player of Minidisc. When selecting the connected device, you can select "G-1 RPG" for RPG, "G-2 Sport" for a sport game, "G-3 Action" for an action game, or "G-4 Night" for enjoying powerful game sound with a low sound level.

USB Input: You can play audio from your PC through this unit via the front panel USB input. The port has a USB Type B connection. It is compatible with USB 2.0 Full Speed (formerly called USB 1.1). Note: This is a one-way connection only. You cannot send audio signals from this unit to your PC.

Compu-Play: This unit features Compu-Play control. When you press a source button (FM/AM, DVD/CD, Game/Aux, or USB), the unit automatically powers up and begins playback from the selected source. When you press the Game/Aux or USB button, the unit will power up and switch to Game/Aux Input or USB Input, but you will need to manually start playback on the connected component.

Sound Modes: This system has 6 preset Sound modes: Rock (boosts the low and high frequencies; good for acoustic music), Pop (good for vocal music), Classic (good for classical music), Dance (increases resonance and bass), Hall (adds depth and brilliance), and Stadium (adds clarity and spreads the sound, as in an outdoor stadium).

3D Phonic Modes: You can select one of three 3D Phonic Modes: 3D Action (suitable for action movies and sports), 3D Drama (creates natural and warm sound for enjoying movies in a relaxed mood), and 3D Theater (creates sound effects as in a major theater).

Subwoofer Level Control: You can independently adjust the subwoofer level to one of three settings: Level 0, 1, or 2.

Sound Turbo: Similar to a Loudness function, the Sound Turbo feature boosts both low and high frequency sounds.

Daily Timer: You can use the daily timer as an alarm clock to wake up to a DVD, CD, the radio, or a connected auxiliary component at a preset volume level. When setting the timer, you can choose an "on" time as well as an "off" time. Once the timer is active, it will operate everyday at the set time.

Sleep Timer: The sleep timer switches the system off after a specified amount of time so you can fall asleep without worrying about the stereo being left on all night. The sleep timer can be set to 10, 20, 30, 60, 90, or 120 minutes.

Fade Muting: When you push the mute button on the remote, the volume drops gradually until it reaches "zero". When the mute is disabled, the volume gradually increases until it reaches the original volume level. Note: The volume drops from maximum to zero in approximately 3 seconds.

Beep Tones: Each time you press a button or turn a control, the unit will beep. This function can be turned off if you desire.

Display: The large multi-color display features a 10-band level meter which moves with the music, and gradually lights up as the volume is increased. The alphanumeric display indicates the sound modes, disc track and elapsed time, MP3/WMA disc file and time info, and the tuner band and frequency. There are also numerous icons indicating timer status and playback modes. Using the remote, you can change the brightness of the display by activating the display dimmer.

Remote Control: The unit comes with a wireless remote control with a numeric keypad. You can control this unit, as well as the power, volume, and channel selection of JVC brand TVs. Several features can be enabled solely with the remote, such as fade muting, clear voice, DVD Level, direct track access, direct preset tuning, and FM mono/stereo switching. The dimensions of the remote are: Length=6.806", Width=2.128", Depth=1.008".

Digital Audio Output: The HX-D77 features an optical digital output for connecting the unit to a Dolby Digital/DTS receiver/decoder or a digital recorder. You can select one of three digital output options: PCM only (when connecting to a digital recorder), Dolby Digital/PCM (when connecting to a Dolby Digital decoder), or Stream/PCM (when connecting to a DTS decoder).

Video Outputs: This unit has one Composite and one S-Video output for connecting to a TV. When using the front panel Game/Aux jack to input video from a game console or other video device, the video is output only from the composite video jack. The unit does not upconvert to an S-Video signal.

NTSC/PAL: This unit will play discs recorded in NTSC or PAL color systems.

Headphone Jack: For private listening, you can plug in a pair of headphones to the front panel headphone 3.5mm minijack. The speakers are muted when headphones are plugged into the headphone output.

Speaker Design: The HX-D77 includes two mirror-image 4-way speakers in a bass-reflex enclosure. Each speaker uses a 13/16" dome tweeter, a 2-13/16" paper cone midrange, a 6-5/16" poly cone woofer, and a 6-5/16" poly cone subwoofer. Each speaker is bi-amplified with 180 watts for the subwoofer, plus 90 watts for the main speaker, so your music stays clear when it gets loud. Color-coded speaker wires (blue for the main speaker, red for the subwoofer) are hardwired to each speaker.

Speaker Enclosure: The speaker enclosures feature a Low-pass Advanced Labyrinth Aero porting system with Twin Giga-tube ports to deliver more dynamic and intensified bass.

Video Shielded: The speakers are magnetically shielded to allow you to place them near a TV or computer monitor without causing picture distortion.
