Our take on the JVC KD-S5050 by Crutchfield's Robert Ferency-Viars
JVC's KD-S5050 CD receiver is a versatile and affordable option for upgrading your car stereo! Direct track access lets you skip to any of the first 12 tracks on a disc with a push of a single button. You can change the overall sound with Advanced Sound Control Memory choose from three adjustable tone control presets. And the receiver remembers your sound preferences for CD and radio, so you don't have to adjust it every time.
The music sounds great, delivered by four channels of 17 watts RMS power. A set of preamp outputs enables you to add an external amplifier and subs for some vehicle-rockin' bass.

Level Meter: There is a level meter on each end of the display window. The level meter may be set to Volume 1, Volume 2, or Off. In Volume 1 mode, the meter gives a graphic representation of the volume level. In Volume 2 mode, the meter alternates between Volume 1 mode and illumination display. While making volume, balance and fader adjustments, the meter gives a graphic representation of the setting.
Advanced Sound Control Memory (SCM): This unit has three preset tone control and loudness setting combinations that you may select. With the SCM Link turned on, you may link a different sound mode to each source. Turning off the SCM link lets you use the same mode for all sources. Each of the sound modes may be adjusted to your preference and stored in memory. The preset Sound Control Memory modes are:
- Beat: Bass = +2, Treble = 0, Loudness = On
- Soft: Bass = +1, Treble = -3, Loudness = Off
- Pop: Bass = +4, Treble = +1, Loudness = Off
One Touch Operation: Pressing a source button (CD, FM or AM) turns the unit on and selects the source.
Tuner: This model is equipped with JVC's proprietary HS-II tuner. You can set up to 18 FM and 6 AM stations as presets. Presets can be set manually, or automatically using Strong-station Sequential Memory (SSM). If an FM stereo broadcast is hard to receive, you can manually switch the tuner to "Mono" operation. Note: Although it is not discussed in the manual, you can select either U.S. standard or European tuning spacing.
Direct Track Access: You can directly access CD tracks 1-12 by pressing the station preset buttons. If a preset button is pressed for less than 1 second, the track corresponding to the number on the preset button is selected (for tracks 1-6). When a preset button is pressed for more than 1 second, the track corresponding to the number above the preset button is accessed (for tracks 7-12).
Disc Eject Prohibit: This feature keeps the disc from ejecting even if the eject button is pushed. The disc eject prohibit feature is engaged/disengaged by pressing the CD and power buttons simultaneously for more than 2 seconds.
Clock Display: While playing a CD, you can switch between the clock display and the CD elapsed time display (the track number always appears). While listening to the radio you can switch between the clock display and the station frequency display. When you press the Display button during power off, the unit will turn on, display the clock for 5 seconds, then shut off. This can be done with the ignition on or off.
