Tough hardware, mixed-bag images

Waxy from California on 1/30/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The wi-fi, GPS, and hardware of this camera are excellent. Fully submerged in saltwater for hours, no problem (just rinse in freshwater and dry). However, I feel like I fell for the allure of the ultra-macro (which is spectacular), but the image quality overall is poor by my standards. Good enough for documentation purposes, but it's not gonna make great art. The panorama mode is weak, in-camera image stacking results in lower-resolution photos than if you stacked them yourself, and few manual modes. Overall though, I just needed a waterproof camera with GPS and good close-up capabilites, and I got that.

Pros: Tough, great macro, GPS works fast, wi-fi to my phone is reliable.

Cons: Image quality and software is weak, manual modes few.

For the rugged lifestyle my daughter lives, this was the perfect camera. Simple fixes are listed under "cons." Maybe the next one, right...?

Pros: It's tough and durable. It is a nice size. It has quite a good group of "photoshop - like" features to improve or alter shots.

Cons: My only two complaints are: the zoom feature could be better and the charger should have come as a separate piece so the camera can be used while the spare battery is charging!

Olympus Tough Series TG-3

CT-Panama City from Florida on 1/1/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Simple to use; just point and shoot. Like the waterproof feature; hopefully, I'll never accidently test it. My Grand-daughter has the camera [model older] and takes "underwater" pictures with it. A little heavier and bulker than I would like; however, the Picture Quality is Excellent. Haven't take any movies yet; my son gave the camera to us as a gift; will be using it a lot on future vacations.

Pros: Point and Shoot; auto focus. Excellent picture quality.

Cons: Heavier than my other camera; plan to hang it around my neck.

DJR from Rushford, NY on 12/24/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We are new to this camera, it was purchased mainly for it's size, waterproof and able to take a beating. We travel by motorcycle and had one compact camera that suffered a 2' - 3' drop onto a wooden walkway, luckily we had a backup camera to finish the trip. With the holidays coming up, we'll see how the pictures compare to a regular digital camera.

Pros: I like the size and also that it takes an additional lens. If it's raining - big deal, take your pictures. It's easy to use, read the digital manual.

Cons: It's a bit pricey but not as expensive as my main camera. Wish it came with a printed manual, I don't carry my computer with me when I travel.

T3 is a great camera

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I also bought the Olympus underwater and use it to take some snorkeling photos and they turned out great the deepest photos were shot 15 to 20 feet down and turned out crystal-clear and looked great The camera also does a good job at focusing quickly to get faster shots

Pros: Clear crisp pictures Great underwater with a housing

Cons: The price of the wide-angle lens adapter

Great small camera

Joel M from Cambridge, Massachusetts on 12/22/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

As advertised, a great small camera, tough with an incredible "microscope" ability. Only problem the wi-fi did not work. It is being promptly exchanged. Looking forward to testing underwater.

Pros: Small, easy to use, lots of available options, can use in most circumstances.

Cons: Wi-fi did not work.

Great waterproof camera!

Looking for a waterproof small camera?

Ken from Ohio on 12/5/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If you in the market for a waterproof small camera, this is the one to get it. It has a lot of fun features including Pano, simple automatic "smoothing" of the facial wrinkles, and many other choices to pick under SCN, Microscope (Macro?), and framing etc. Works very well except I found it hard to see the picture under water for proper focusing and framing. For underwater movies, you may want to pick GoPro or some other camera.

Pros: One of the best camera for underwater use and very good for everyday use.

Cons: Movie resolution and Zoom.

snorkler from Denver, co on 11/11/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This camera does underwater pictures and video exceptionally well. The focus ability is superb and the speed of taking pictures is very fast. Much better than Canon D20/30 products. We used this for 10 days in Belize. The lens is very fast so you don't need a flash very often. The closeup ability is amazing.

Pros: Microscope mode above land (easier than underwater but it works in both environments) is amazing - 1 cm distance. Underwater it is fabulous.

Cons: Runs through a battery in about 2 hours of pictures and video underwater about 300 photos. Not bad, just get extra batteries.

Good compact camera

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Easy to use, great pictures, survived a couple of dunkings in the sea and drops onto the floor. Only complaint is the meager zoom. Probably would prefer less wide angle.

Pros: Ease of use photo quality bright screen good battery life

Cons: short zoom

Alexia from Moyock, NC on 9/14/2014

PI don't own this camera but I'll buy one now. I was fishing at the Outer Banks, NC when I saw this red object wash up with the wave. Picking it up I saw that it was a camera. My husband opened it up, took out the SD card put it in his camera and saw that there were over 1,000 pics still good. Getting clues from the pics we found the owner in Road Island, NY and he said that his girlfriend lost it in the ocean a month ago. The camera front was a little damaged and scratched up from the sea but I wouldn't be surprised if they got it to work again. This told me this camera is very tough to stay in the ocean for a month and still come out clean with the pics.

Pros: Great waterproof camera.

Olympus Tough TG-3

Gino from Clinton Township Michigan on 8/26/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First I would like to mention how professional and fast I received my TG-3 from Crutchfield. I ordered this thru another competitor but Crutchfield got it in stock sooner and plus when it when on sale a week later I received a credit for the difference. Before I bought this camera I bought a Fuji camera which I was having trouble with the Wi-Fi. Talked to customer service and they said I had to send it to New Jersey to get it fixed. I sent it back to Japan. With this camera I was also having an issue with the Wi-Fi. When I spoke to the Olympus customer service the Technician took 2 days and resolved my problem. I can not believe the difference I believe customer service is most important when buying a camera. I love my camera. I am taking pictures but I bought more for underwater, which I am planing a Trip in October. The only thing that I do not like is the strap that comes with it. You really need to get another one.

Pros: picture quality Wi-Fi

Cons: Strap

Really nice little camera

Audrey from Bronx, New York on 8/21/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a camera for use in water activities. Haven't tested it out in H2O yet but it has very good landlubber performance. Micro feature is especially impressive. The instruction manual was not very useful, but, as a very untechnical person, I was able to figure out camera functions on my own. Buttons are tiny and I was glad to have small hands. Looking forward to snorkeling with the camera.

Pros: Outstanding macro; easy to figure out the camera on your own. Lots of varied settings and reasonable zoom for a little camera.

Cons: Unhelpful manual; small buttons

Olympus Tough Series TG-3 Replaces All of My Other Cameras!

dj from Spacecoast Florida on 8/12/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought the TG-3 to replace my Canon camera, Drift Ghost action cam and Samsung video camera. I have NOT been disappointed by my choice. The image quality far exceeds all of the above. I've already used it in the pool and the ocean... excellent excellent excellent images... above and below the water! The floaty strap did it's job... I tested in 2-3 foot surf... it floated the camera right back to the surface! I purchased the wide angle and telephoto lenses for the camera (Olympus sale!) and will be playing with them this weekend. I also plan on purchasing additional mounts for my surfboard and helmets.

Pros: Waterproof Image quality Shockproof Additional waterproof lenses! Size

Cons: Video record button is on back of camera... I wish it were on top like the shutter button.

Durable and Easy to use

RonH from Orlando, FL on 8/6/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This camera was easy to begin using without even reading the instructions. Unpacked it, charged it and headed out for a water park to test it out. Figured out how to use it while floating in the lazy river! Only thing I did wrong was install the strap incorrectly. This allowed me test it's durability when it slipped off of the strap and fell 4 feet to the concrete sidewalk. It never turned turned off or showed any signs of being dropped. The photos and videos were better than I expected for a camera in this class. The remote control application for my Iphone is a neat tool which allowed me to quickly move photos to my Iphone to share them. Overall , I am very pleased with this camera.

Pros: durable, easy to understand controls

Cons: lens seems to get a film on it quickly when using it under water

Pros: Nice Pictures. Tough

Cons: Foggy on lenses and OLED screen. probably a heat factor involved!

Fantastic performance in the Galapagos

KeithN from Chatham, MA on 8/4/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this camera as a backup/2nd camera for a family vacation in the Galapagos aboard the National Geographic Endeavour. I preformed very well on land and underwater. The pictures and videos are great. Even the underwater sound was good. Colors under and above water are fantastic. The numerous (tons of them) scene settings made using the camera easy throughout very active days: from sunrises, to midday beach shots with swimming sea lions, hikes around Blue Footed Boobies and Marine Iguana's 20 foot snorkel shots with sea turtles, reef sharks, more sea lions and 1000's of schooling fish and finally sunset shots with islands in the foreground. The microscope function is very good too. Great for interesting detailed shots of leaves, lava, sand, . . . . anything that you can creep up to within 5 inches or less. Switching between the settings is easy - even when tailing sea turtles underwater.

Pros: Tons of preloaded sceen settings, ease of use, compact "pocket" size. The optional Fish Eye lens and floating lanyard are excellent options too.

Cons: Base camera does not come with a lens cover. If you buy the optional fish eye lens or telephoto lens, they each come with a lens ring which you can leave on the camera. It accepts an included lens cover. I think that you can buy the ring and a lens cover too.

Snapper from Dallas, TX on 8/2/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My friend has a TG-2 and loves it. I was excited to get a recently launched TG-3 but I couldn't get the camera to work! Two other people tried who know their cameras. I had to return it without taking a single photo. Battery repeatedly removed/inserted. Memory card worked fine in another camera. Manufacturing problem? Customer Service said it was easy to put the battery in wrong but we agreed the camera would not turn on at all if that was the case. It took several attempts to get to the setup screen.... I made it through that but the display screen would never light up for a photo.

Pros: great form factor. water proof

Cons: Didn't work out of the box after charging over night. Customer Service said buyers have had problems putting the battery in the wrong way. This wasn't the case. The camera powered on but I could not get the setup menu to select language, time zone, etc. After several attempts of powering the camera off/on, I was able to get the setup menu. However, the camera display never did light up again. I could hear the camera powering up and then it would shut down.

Great Camera

CC from Fargo, ND on 7/31/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We got this camera right before we went on a cruise, and we were really happy with it. For a small waterproof DC, it does a really good job showing the colors, especially blue and green. We took it when we went scuba diving, and the underwater pictures turned out really good compare to some other waterproof cameras in the same price range. Most waterproof cameras don't do well under water, but tg3 takes clear and vibrant pictures underwater. Some of the pictures we took even looked like they were taken above water. We also love the high speed video recording function. We had lots of fun with it.

Pros: Tough while still takes good quality pictures, does amazing job under water

Cons: short battery life, especially when the GPS is on.

Excellent camera, fantastic with water-related shots, too

MP from MD on 7/25/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Considering I operate my own photo/video business, I am very particular with image quality, ease of use, and the general features that are in various cameras. Granted I cannot get the same that I have in a $10,000 camera, into this $350~ camera, but for family use, and in good lighting, even semi-pro use, this camera really excels. I purchased this primarily for family use, wanting something smaller than a dslr, and one that will survive if getting wet. Well, it got submerged several times and was totally fine. No waters past the seals, very solid build, excellent imagery in daylight, lowlight, and underwater, and even with the flash, it does a great job.

Pros: As's a wonderful camera and a great price.

Cons: Battery life can go quickly, so bring a spare.

Great point and shoot

Jack K from Chino, CA on 7/20/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have only had this camera for about a month, but I have at least 6 other digital point and shoot cameras, so I can give a quick review. Image quality is excellent, color saturation and focus are also very good. The wide angle is great, 25mm equivalent, but I wish it had a little longer telephoto, 100mm equivalent. Not knocking the camera for this as I knew the range before I bought it. The tough rating is what sets this apart from my other cameras. Water and shock proof make this a great vacation camera around lakes, the ocean, dust and sand. Just knowing that you can use it without the worry of damaging it as easily as with regular cameras is great. This is also my first WiFi camera. Fun to have the camera controls on my phone as well as having the pictures sent to my phone to paste on Facebook or send in an email. Overall a very nice camera. One thing to get is a second or even a third battery and if you just want to plug the charger into an outlet, a different charger.

Pros: Rugged Great pictures Small for a waterproof camera Built in WiFi

Cons: Short battery life (rated for 500 pictures but using features and reviewing pictures cuts this down) Battery charger doesn't plug into a wall outlet, but needs a USB port

Really nice camera

Jtaylor from Texas on 7/20/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Have had this camera for about two weeks and it is a really great little camera. Can take pictures fast and stabilize quickly for less blurry shots. The camera also turns on very quickly for those pictures you don't want to miss. Under water shots are very clear and the color is true to life, I saw very little distortion in the pool.

Pros: Fast shutter speed. Quick turn on. Stabilization for better focus. Underwater pictures are good color.

Cons: Zoom not very far. Close up shots aren't easy with this camera.

Rugged Design: The Olympus Stylus TG-3, part of the Tough series, is a rugged camera, designed for adventurous photographers. The camera's durable construction is built to the following standards:

  • Shockproof: designed to withstand a 7-foot fall, drop or other mishap (MIL-STD-810F standard)
  • Waterproof: innovative waterproof seals and gaskets allow you to take underwater movies and pictures in the pool, lake, or ocean, up to 50-foot (15 meter) depths for one hour (IEC Standard Publication 529 IPX8)
  • Dustproof: dustproof to an IEC standard 529 IP6X
  • Crushproof: can withstand up to 220 foot-pounds of pressure
  • Freezeproof: camera can withstand temperature extremes down to 14° F (MIL-STD-810F standard)

Double Lock Mechanisms: The battery compartment and connector cover doors both have double lock mechanisms to prevent accidental exposure to moisture and dust. Rubberized seals on the doors help make the compartments watertight to protect the battery, memory card, and connector contacts.

Optics: The TG-3 is equipped with a bright F2.0-4.9 lens to let you capture shots in low light or situations when a flash cannot be used. The 5x optical zoom lens has a focal length of 4.5-18.0mm (equivalent to 25-100mm in 35mm photography).

Super-Resolution Zoom: The Super-Resolution Zoom increases the effective zoom power without compromising image quality. The zoom ratio depends upon the selected image size. The Super-Res zoom extends the total zoom to 8x (16M), 5.8x (8M), 9.6x (3M), and 16x (VGA).

3.0" Monitor: The camera is equipped with a 3.0" TFT LCD monitor with approximately 460,000 dots. The monitor features several protective coatings to reduce glare and to prevent scratches. Like the lens, a special water-repellent coating prevents water from remaining on the monitor. The TG-3 offers a 5-level monitor brightness adjustment in the menu.

iHS: iHS technology is a combination of the high-sensitivity, high-speed 1/2.3" 16MP backlit CMOS sensor and the exceptionally fast TruePic VII image processor. The result is fast auto focusing, an enhanced iAuto shooting mode that recognizes multiple scenes and subjects, and Super Resolution Zoom that lets you zoom in farther than the optical zoom without degrading the image.

Wi-Fi: The TG-3 has Wi-Fi for remote camera operation and easy file sharing. It has its own built-in Wireless LAN, so you don't have to connect to a network. Using the free Olympus Image Share (OI.Share) app on your smartphone, you can easily share still images and movies to iOS and Android mobile devices. GPS location information can be used to geotag photos. From a compatible mobile device, you can remotely take pictures and choose the settings for the self-timer, white balance, exposure (ISO, shutter speed, aperture), shooting and drive modes, and AF area.

Note: Olympus Image Share is available for Android mobile devices (Android 2.3 and up) from Google Play, and for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch with iOS 5.0 or later from the Apple App Store.

GPS: The TG-3 has a built-in GPS (Global Positioning System) receiver, which can record location information onto your photos and movies. Using applications such as Olympus Viewer 3 or OI. Track, you can view the location of your photos on a map. The logging function lets you track the route taken on your adventure.

Recording Media: The Olympus Stylus TG-3 digital camera records still images or movies onto optional SD, SDHC, or SDXC Memory Cards. For test images, or when the memory card becomes full, you can shoot a small number of images onto the camera's internal memory (approximately 36MB). Still images are recorded in JPEG format. Movies are recorded in MOV (H.264) with sound.

EyeFi: The TG-3 is compatible with commercially available EyeFi cards. These cards have a Wireless LAN function to enable you to connect the camera to a Wi-Fi-enabled smartphone or PC to view or import images from the card.

Image Stabilization: The camera utilizes Sensor-shift Image Stabilization, so you can capture sharp, blur-free images, even if your subject is moving.

Focusing Range: The focus range for the normal shooting mode is 3.6" to infinity (W-T). In the Microscope mode, you can record images from 0.36" to 3.6" away.

White Balance: The Stylus TG-3 offers the following White Balance presets: WB Auto, Sunny, Cloudy, Incandescent, Fluorescent, and Underwater. You can also set and store two custom white balance settings (One Touch 1 and 2) based on an actual scene.

AF Illuminator: The camera has an AF illuminator that can assist in Auto Focusing, or illuminate the scene in closeup situations. It can be turned on or off manually in the menu, or set to automatically illuminate when the shutter button is pressed halfway.

Flash: The camera's built-in flash operates in the following modes:

  • Flash Auto: The flash fires automatically in low light or backlight conditions.
  • Red-eye Reduction Flash: This emits pre-flashes for red-eye reduction.
  • Fill-in Flash: The flash fires regardless of the available light.
  • LED On: Turns on the LED illuminator for close up images.
  • Remote Control: Allows you to take pictures with a wireless flash by remote control. The camera's built-in flash communicates between the camera and the remote flash.
  • Flash Off: The flash does not fire.

Self-Timer: You can take pictures of yourself using the 12-second built-in self timer. The 2-second self-timer also aids in preventing camera shake. You can also customize the self-timer by setting the delay (1-30 seconds), number of pictures (1-10), and the interval between multiple pictures (1, 2, or 3).

Power Requirements: The Stylus TG-3 operates on an LI-92B rechargeable Lithium-ion battery (3.6V, 1350mAh). An AC adapter (F-2AC-1B) is supplied to charge the LI-92B in the camera or operate the camera on AC power. The camera can take up to approximately 380 photos with fully charged battery. Charging time is approximately 5 hours. The camera can also charge while it is connected to a computer via USB.

Recording Images

Resolution: The Stylus TG-3 can record still images in four aspect ratios: 4:3, 16:9, 3:2, and 1:1. Two image quality (compression) settings can be selected: Fine and Normal. Movies are recorded in 16:9 and 4:3, with or without sound. Available image sizes include:

Selection Frames Per Second Maximum # of Frames Frame Resolution
Sequential 1 5 fps 100 images 16M
High Speed 1 15 fps 100 images 3M
High Speed 2 60 fps 100 images 3M

Sensitivity: The higher the ISO value, the greater the camera's light sensitivity and better its ability to shoot in low light. The Stylus TG-3 can automatically set the camera's sensitivity according to the conditions around the subject. To minimize blur caused by a moving subject or camera movement, the camera can automatically use a higher sensitivity (compared to Auto). Manual settings include ISO 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200, and 6400 equivalents.

AF Mode: There are three AF (auto focus) modes for selecting the focusing area:

  • Face/iESP: the camera determines the subject, even when not in the center. If a face is detected, the camera focuses on the face when the shutter button is pressed halfway.
  • Spot AF: focus detection based on the subject within the AF target mark
  • AF Tracking: The camera tracks the subject's movement automatically to focus on it continuously.

Exposure Compensation: In some situations, you may get better results by adjusting the exposure slightly using exposure compensation. You can adjust from -2.0 to + 2.0 EV in 1/3 stop increments.

Still Image Audio Recording: When activated, the camera's built-in microphone can be set to record four seconds of audio after the shutter button is released and the picture is taken. In the playback menu, you can add up to 4 seconds of audio to still pictures.

Displaying and Editing Images

Image Playback: Once still images or movies have been captured, the camera gives you several options for playing them back:

  • Manual Playback: view images manually one-by-one
  • Close-Up Playback: In manual playback, you can zoom in up to 10x to get a close-up view of the image. When zoomed in, you can use the arrow buttons to scroll around the image.
  • Slide Show: play still images back as a slide show. You can select to include all, or images from a single event, or in a specific collection created with PC software. You can choose from five types of background music.
  • Index View: For viewing multiple images at once, you can create an index display of 20 frames.

Outputs: The Stylus TG-3 is equipped with an HDMI Micro Connector (Type D) for connecting the camera to an HDMI-equipped HDTV. The output can be set to 1080i, 720p, or 480p. If the connected HDTV is compatible with HDMI Control, you can set the camera to be controlled by the TV's remote control. The camera also has a proprietary multi-function jack used as an audio/video output (with the optional CB-AVC3 composite video/mono audio cable) or a USB port (with the supplied USB cable).

Editing Pictures: If a picture you have taken turns out less-than-perfect, you can edit it using one of the following:

  • Image Size: You can save a high-resolution image as a separate image with a smaller size to use in e-mail attachments or other applications. You can choose 3M or VGA.
  • Cropping: You can zoom in using the cropping frame, and create a new image.
  • Adding Sound: You can add up to 4 seconds of audio to an existing image using the built-in microphone.
  • Shadow Adjust: You can brighten areas that are dark due to backlighting of other reasons
  • Redeye Fix: Red-eyes caused by flash shooting can be retouched.
  • Rotate: You can rotate the image to the proper orientation.
  • e-Portrait: The camera can make corrections to the subject's skin tones.

Erasing/Protecting Images: Unwanted images can be erased one at a time or all at once. You can protect important images to avoid accidentally erasing them. Once an image is protected, it cannot be erased during a single-frame erase or all-frame erase function. Protected images are erased when the memory is reformatted.

PictBridge Printing Capability: Using the supplied USB cable, you can connect this camera directly to a PictBridge-compliant printer. PictBridge is a standard that allows you to connect a PictBridge compliant camera directly to a PictBridge compliant printer and make prints, regardless of brand.

Print Reservation: Applying Print Reservation (Print Order) to your pictures allows you to take the memory card to a DPOF-compatible photo lab for printing, or print them on a DPOF-compatible printer at home, without using a computer. DPOF is the Digital Print Order Format and allows you to add information to your picture files such as which pictures to print, the number of prints desired, add the date and time to each image, etc.
