Creative lighting reimagined

Whether you're a pro photographer or an enthusiast with high standards, you need a speedy, responsive flash with comprehensive features and controls. Enter the most powerful flash in Canon's EOS system. The Speedlite 600EX II-RT is built for fast, convenient use in any shooting situation. If you shoot sports or other high-speed action, this compact, portable flash fires continuously up to 1.5 times faster than its predecessor, the capable 600EX-RT.

You get lots of creative lighting options thanks to wireless radio control, which gives you near-total flash placement freedom. Operate up to five groups of 15 Speedlites from anywhere within 98 feet without worrying about obstacles getting in your way.

Powerful performance, simple operation

The Speedlite 600EX II-RT has a maximum guide number of 196.9 feet at ISO 100, and flash coverage of 20-200mm — a greater range than any other Canon Speedlite flash — so it's great for portraits or group shots, up close or at a distance. Fully automatic evaluative through-the-lens (E-TTL) exposure control works with your Canon camera to provide the right level of illumination for any scene. A manual mode with adjustable power settings gives you extra flexibility and creative control. The rear LCD panel is easy to read, so you can confirm settings at a glance.

Get the look you want

A built-in, extendable catchlight panel brightens faces for a soft, natural look, while reflecting the flash onto the subject's eyes. The flash head can be moved upward or rotated to the left or right, so you can bounce light off of different surfaces for more natural-looking photos with soft, even illumination. New, specially designed accessories are included to help position, diffuse and tone the flash output. The bounce adapter widens and diffuses bounce lighting for a softer effect. The color hard-type filter sets help achieve more natural, realistic light in indoor settings.

Features

Overview: The Canon Speedlite 600EX II-RT is designed to provide top level performance and reliability for professional flash photography with today's most advanced DSLR cameras. The flash covers a wide range (20-200mm) and distance (up to 197 feet), and the zoom can configured according to the camera's image sensor size (full-frame or APS-C). Using 2.4 GHz radio frequencies, the 600EX II-RT can drive a wireless multiple flash system of up to five groups of flashes. The Speedlite comes with a mini stand, two color filters, a bounce adapter, and a soft, padded case.

Compatible Cameras: The Canon Speedlite 600EX II-RT is designed for use with Type-A Canon EOS cameras that are compatible with E-TTL II and E-TTL auto flash, and Type-B EOS cameras that are compatible with TTL auto flash. It can be used as an on-camera flash that attaches to the hot shoe of the camera, as a master or slave unit during radio transmission and optical wireless flash photography.

LCD Display: The dot matrix LCD panel graphically displays the various flash modes, Custom and Personal Function settings and status indicators, wireless configuration, and all flash settings. With the improved display and backlit operation buttons, the unit is easy to operate in the dark.

Shoe Mount: The 600EX II-RT flash attaches to, and makes electrical contact via the camera's hot shoe. Flash trigger, exposure setting, and focal length (zoom) setting are transferred to the flash via the intelligent shoe.

Wireless Performance: The Speedlite 600EX II-RT can be used in comprehensive lighting setups, offering multiple options for wireless flash. When used with a compatible flash or flash driver mounted on the camera, the 600EX II-RT can operate as a slave unit in an optical lighting setup at distances of up to 49.2' indoors or 32.8' outdoors. In addition, the flash unit is compatible with radio-transmitted wireless flash systems with transmission distances of up to 98.4'. Up to 16 flash and camera units, or up to 5 groups of flashes, can be synchronized to take simultaneous photographs from different angles and directions. You can also perform remote control shooting through a 600EX II-RT, when mounted on an EOS digital camera made in 2012 or later (must be set as slave during radio transmission wireless shooting).

Flash Coverage (Zoom): The flash covers a wide range (equivalent to using lenses between 20 and 200mm), with a maximum Guide Number of 197 ft/60m at ISO 100. When the extendable wide panel is pulled out, the flash coverage widens to 14mm. When Automatic is selected, the Speedlite 600EX II-RT sets the flash coverage according to the focal length of the lens being used, and the camera's image sensor size. You can manually set the flash output from 1/1 (full output) to 1/128 power in 1/3-step increments.

AF-Assist Beam: If the focal point lacks sufficient light or contrast to achieve focus, the 600EX II-RT's infrared AF-Assist Beam will light automatically to help the camera focus. The AF-Assist beam is compatible with 28mm and longer focal lengths, and is effective from 0.6-10 meters (2 feet to 32.8 feet) in the center and 0.6-5 meters (2 feet to 16.4 feet) in the periphery.

Wide Panel: The 600EX II-RT flash has a fold out wide panel which covers the lens to extend the flash to cover a 14mm wide angle lens. This does not include the angle of view of some fisheye lenses.

Catchlight Panel: The catchlight panel, a thin white plastic panel that pulls out of the top of the flash head, enables you to reflect light in a person's eyes to create a more vivid expression. The catchlight panel is most effective within 4.9' of the subject, and when the flash head is pointed at 90° (straight up) and aimed toward the front.

Bounce Flash: When the flash is aimed directly at the subject, a harsh shadow may appear behind the subject. Using the vertical and horizontal adjustments on the flash to bounce the flash off the ceiling or wall can reduce or eliminate the shadow for a more natural looking picture. In addition, when the supplied bounce adapter is attached, you can spread the flash light over a larger area and suppress the shadows of the subject.

Stroboscopic Flash: When using stroboscopic flash with a slow shutter speed, you can shoot multiple successive movements within a single picture. The flash output can be set between 1/4 to 1/128. The flash frequency can be set between 1 and 500 Hz (number of flashes per second). During optical transmission wireless shooting, the flash frequency can be set between 1 and 199 Hz.

Modeling Flash: When the camera's depth-of-field preview button is pressed, the flash fires continuously for approximately 1 second. This "modeling flash" lets you check for shadows cast on the subject by the flash light and the lighting balance during wireless flash photography.

Variable Angle: The firing direction of the flash is adjustable. The vertical angle ranges from -7° (down) through 0° (straight forward) to 90° (straight up). The horizontal angle has a 360° range (180° left or right).

Custom and Personal Functions: You can make precise adjustments to various functions and save them as Custom Functions and Personal Functions. There are 15 Custom Functions and six Personal Functions available:

  • LCD Panel display contrast
  • LCD Panel illumination color: Normal shooting
  • LCD Panel illumination color: Master
  • LCD Panel illumination color: Slave

Color Filters: The Speedlite 600EX II-RT comes with two color filters (SCF-E3OR1 and SCF-E3OR2) to compensate for the effect of shooting under incandescent lighting. When the filters are used, automatic correction is made by the camera's white balance function so the subject and background can be shot with the appropriate white balance. One of the filters features low density and low correction effect, while the other filter has high density and correction effect. The filters simply snap into place over the front of the flash head.

Stand: The 600EX II-RT comes with a portable stand that allows you to stand the flash upright anywhere for wireless flash usage. The stand also includes a standard 1/4" tripod thread for attaching the flash to a tripod for multiple flash shooting.

Power Requirements

Batteries: The 600EX II-RT flash uses 4 AA batteries. Alkaline, or Nickel-Metal Hydride (Ni-MH) rechargeable batteries are recommended. Based on Canon's testing standards, new alkaline batteries yield approximately 100-700 flashes. During radio transmission wireless, battery life is approximately 9 continuous hours (master setting off). For optical wireless shooting, new alkaline batteries will provide power for approximately 1500 flashes (master setting off).

Note: Due to potential overheating issues, Lithium batteries are not recommended.

Auto Power Off: To save battery power, the flash will turn off automatically after approximately 90 seconds of idle use. During radio transmission wireless master flash shooting or during linked shooting, the auto power off time is extended to 5 minutes. When set as a slave unit, the power off time is 60 minutes.

External Power: On the side of the flash there is an input for an external power supply (CP-E4 Compact Battery Pack).
