Overview

Our take on the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM

Superlative telephoto performance

Canon's latest  L Series super-telephoto 100-400mm lens makes a perfect choice for capturing photos of far-off subjects at sporting events or concerts, as well as shooting wildlife photography. Professional-grade optics, including one fluorite lens element and one UD (Ultra-low Dispersion) element, deliver crystal-clear, high-contrast photos. Record stunning images that freeze an athlete in mid-kick during a soccer game or bird in mid-flight at a national park.

New design with advanced features

Like many of Canon's professional L Series lens, this zoom features a rugged, water-and dust-resistant magnesium housing for exceptional durability in even the harshest shooting conditions. Its advanced optical image stabilizer provides up to four steps of image correction for better handheld shots. Canon's new Air Sphere Coating helps significantly reduce backlit flaring and ghosting, while fluorine coatings on the front and rear lens surfaces help resist smears and fingerprints. Other useful features include a new inner focusing system for fast and accurate autofocus down to 3.2 feet, plus a rotation-type zoom ring with adjustable torque settings for more precise, customizable zoom performance. Canon also included a redesigned tripod mount that can be attached and detached without removing the lens from the camera, and an all-new lens hood with a side window that makes it simple to adjust specialty filters, like polarizers, without the need to remove the hood.

Exceptional lens for wildlife

This is my second 100-400 lens. I absolutely love the new version even more than the previous one I bought about about 15 years ago. This is my go-to lens for sports photography. I can use it sitting in the stands and I always get great shots. Unfortunately when people see my pictures they want me to photograph their kids too. My hobby had become a job without pay during football and baseball season. Love the lens, love the results!

Pros: Sharp Portable

Cons: None

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased this lens for my Canon 7DMark 2 specifically for shooting birds in flight as well as wildlife from a safe distance. I originally was using the Tamron 150-600 lens however the canon lens is more compact and focuses faster. In addition I plan to purchase a Canon 1.4 teleconverter which according to reviews works very well with this lens. I have used the Canon lens with very good results in practice sessions so far, it focuses faster than the tamron and is easier to carry while affixed to the camera as well as easier to pack in the camera bag when traveling on a plane.

Pros: fairly compact for the distance it covers

Cons: None to report

Excellent Performing Lens

Anonymous from Texas on 6/26/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent lens for outdoor sports or wildlife. Super fast focusing and very sharp. I use this primarily for soccer pictures where I set my camera on F5.6, set the ISO and Color Temperature based on quality of daylight, then just adjust shutter speed, as necessary. This was an upgrade from a 70-200 F/4 L IS which worked perfectly until we moved to a full size field and needed more lens reach.

Pros: Fast focus, sharp, great range for a full size sports field when mounted on a crop sensor, and weather sealed.

Cons: Quite a stretch of the hand to be able to reach both zoom and manual focus rings. Can get quite heavy when hand-holding for a long period of time. Most users will want to mount this to a monopod.

Outstanding Lens

Noah from Massachusetts on 11/1/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Not an inexpensive lens, but truly worth the cost. It is sharp, focuses fast, and is compact for what it delivers. The image stabilization also seems to be incredible. Although the Canon is not quite as long, I upgraded from the Sigma 150-500mm f/5-6.3, and the Canon shows considerable improvement over the Sigma in image quality.

Pros: Fast and accurate focusing Outstanding image stabilization Compact & lightweight for what it delivers

Cons:

Notice the difference!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I own the Canon 70D, and rented EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM, the older and cheaper EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM, and this recent upgrade EF 100-400mm F4.5-5.6L IS II USM to compare the differences. This lens hands down is easier to use and produces a much shaper image than its predecessor. The zoom has improvements that make it much easier to use than its predecessor. I have had no trouble with the lens hood window staying closed. After purchasing this lens, I continue to be amazed at the world I was missing. This lens is replacing an EFS 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS. The only draw back is getting use to the weight, but that was expected with this well built lens.

Pros: Shape images!

Cons: Weight

Super snap to photos

Starphotog from Anniston, AL on 1/6/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This lens is so much better than the older version! There is really no comparison! The IQ of the photos are so good. There is such a SNAP to the photos that Ive only gotten with a few lenses! Great contrast, color and overall quality! I used it at a bowl game for the first time and it preformed flawlessly! IMHO it is a the best lens, at least for outdoor sports that ive ever used! My EF 70-200 [offsiteUrl] II was never mounted on a body for the game! Now, it is not better that my EF 400 [offsiteUrl] but if you can only have one lens on one body..this is it! (The EF 200-400 would be better but with a $9000 difference....maybe not!) I only have one complaint, the lens hood window would not stay closed! Other than that this is one awesome and very affordable HIGH quality lens!

Pros: GREAT image quality! Pro build, one lens does it all!

Cons: Lens hood window wont stay closed. Hard to zoom!

sharp sharp sharp

jeffF from New York on 12/25/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

much sharper than old 100-400, seems to be sharper than the 500 f4 (but I can't believe that--must be owners enthusiasm). focuses fast with 1.4 x multiplier in line (using 7D mark ii). All and all, an amazing achievement. (have owned the series I 100-400 and have used the 500f4 mk ii)

Pros: sharp, fast focusing

Cons: not that I notice yet

Features

Overview: The Canon EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM lens is a lightweight, high-performance telephoto zoom lens for Canon EOS full-frame and APS-C cameras. When used on APS-C cameras, the focal length is equivalent to 160-640mm. It has a standard Canon EF-mount, and comes with front and rear lens caps, a lens hood, and a padded storage case.

Image Stabilizer: The EF100-400mm zoom lens has an optical image stabilization system that provides up to four stops of shake correction. There are three stabilizer modes:

  • Mode 1: Corrects vibrations in all directions; mainly for shooting still subjects.
  • Mode 2: Compensates for vertical camera shake while you are panning the camera, following a moving subject. It also compensates for horizontal camera shake when tilting the camera in a vertical direction.
  • Mode 3: Corrects vibration only during exposure. During panning shots, it corrects vibration during exposure only in one direction (same as Mode 2).

Zooming Resistance: The resistance of the zoom ring can be adjusted to suit your preference. The Zoom Touch Adjustment ring tightens or loosens the operational feel of the zoom control. The ring can be rotated toward Tight to increase the zooming touch, or Smooth to reduce it.

AF/MF Switch: A switch on the lens barrel lets you select Auto Focus (AF) or Manual Focus (MF). Full-time manual focus allows you to manually focus with the focus ring, even while the lens is in AF mode.

Focusing Range Switch: The Focusing Range Switch lets you select a focusing range of either Full (3.22' to infinity) or 3m/9.84' to infinity, depending on shooting conditions. By setting an appropriate focusing range, the actual focusing time can be reduced.

Lens Hood: The included ET-83D lens hood can keep unwanted light out of the lens, and protect the front element. The hood includes a circular polarizing filter adjustment window, which allows you to rotate the circular polarizing filter while the hood is attached. When attached, the lens hood adds approximately 4" to the overall length of the lens. When not in use, the hood can be mounted in reverse on the lens.

Optional Lens Extenders: You can attach an optional Canon Extension Tube for magnified shots. With the EF1.4X II or EF1.4X III Extender, the focal length becomes 140-560mm with an aperture of f/6.3-45 (W) f/8-57 (T). With the EF2X II or EF2X III Extender attached, the focal length changes to 200-800mm with an f/9-64 (W) f/11-81 (T) aperture.

Specifications:

  • Focal Length: 100-400mm
  • Lens Construction: 21 elements in 16 groups
  • Maximum Aperture: f/4.5 (W) to f/5.6 (T)
  • Minimum Aperture: f/32 (W) to f/40 (T) (or f/38 with 1/2-stop increments)

Why did you buy this?

Best lens out there. [ FRED  Mar 29, 2017 ]
Have the older model and my husband wants this one, however he's getting my hand me down. Ha! [ M  Dec 23, 2016 ]
Has good reviews and rebate of $200 helped [ michael  Nov 25, 2016 ]
have the first version -- this is much better [ Jeffrey  Aug 10, 2016 ]
The 100-400 IS II USM Lens is one of the most versatile lens in Canon's Line-up. Super Sharp! Super Fast Focus! and can totally replace most Macro Lens! [ Aaron  Jul 25, 2016 ]
I was looking for a good lens to take pictures of my children playing soccer. This was an upgrade from the 70-200 F/4 L which I needed to get more range due to the kids moving up to a full size soccer field. Super fast to focus and sharp at F 5.6 where I shoot in manual mode once color temp and ISO are set adjusting shutter speed as needed. It is heavy and most users would probably want to keep it on a monopod. Quite a stretch of the hand for manual focus adjustment. Would buy it again! [ Heather  Jun 26, 2016 ]
I had a chance to try this lens and it is a significant improvement over the original. [ ANTHONY  May 27, 2016 ]
