Great Camera for Price

Brock from Chicago, IL on 1/16/2009

This camera is super small and probably the easiest thing i have ever operated. Very cut and dry instructions and great features. No dvds or tapes to bother with. I would recommend this camera to anyone. The only disadvantage is no internal memory but that is easily solved by getting either more memory cards or the next model up of this camera.

Great Value!

Ohannes from New Jersey on 10/28/2008

I was looking for a camera to mount to my harness bar in my car for track sessions. I wanted something with good exposure, anti-shake and recording speed adjustments/settings. Once I decided not to go the HD route, there were really only a couple cameras that were worthy competitors in this segment, one of them being the FS100. After speaking with the well-informed Crutchfield rep, I decided to purchase one. This is a GREAT camcorder right out of the box!! The menus are easy to use, and I needed NO "trial and error", it worked perfectly the first time out! The software takes a little learning, but the videos download easily and playback/storing are simple. I definitely recommend this to any novice/intermediate camcorder consumer looking for a first or replacement unit. Even the still pictures are pretty good for "in case you need them" images.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have owned the Canon FS100 for a few weeks now and I am amazed how great this compact, lightweight camcorder is. The ease of use is #1 - I pretty much used it right out of the box. The menus are very easy to go through and set up is easy. Playback is a snap. Fully digital is soooo much better than tape or DVD. Just take the memory card out of the camera put it into your computer or purchase a USB card reader and transfer the files into your computer. Couldn't be easier. The movie images are great in n 16:9 ratio for a non-HD camcorder. I did purchase a larger memory card (16GB), so I can use the free 4GB card as a back up. I have created three movies so far without the included software, which I read is not so good. The movies have turned out great! If you are looking for an inexpensive, lightweight good quality camcorder hit the " Add to Cart " button now!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This camera was a great deal and has many features I probably haven't even discovered yet. I basically just use it on the "easy" mode to get the automatic settings that are perfect every time. I like the photo feature as well to take still shots. My only difficulty with this camera was with the software it comes with to convert the flash memory to your computer to put on DVD. It was not as easy as using the camera is, however it is very important as all video needs to be backed up on a DVD. My time was spent figuring out that software.

Great Camera for the Money

Brett from Jupiter, FL on 9/17/2008

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This has been a great starter camera for me. It's small, easy to use for both recording and playback, and has great battery life. Not to mention it looks like a high price camera and definitely is not. My only complaint is that at times low light footage has been a little grainy. Also, don't expect to get HD video quality, even though I knew I was not buying an HD camera, I have been spoiled with technology and was a little disappointed at the video quality on a large HD tv. All around it's a great camera for the price and as usual you can trust Canon to give you a quality product.

Great Canon Camcorder

General Features

2.7" Widescreen LCD Screen: The FS100 features a 2.7" TFT, color widescreen LCD screen (123,000 pixels) to make it easy to compose and review your shots. The bright screen lets you see exactly what your camcorder is recording, and what your widescreen TV will display later. You can rotate the LCD screen 90-degrees downward and 180-degrees toward the lens allowing the subject to monitor the LCD screen. The LCD screen also an adjustable brightness control. The LCD Screen's frame contains zoom, playback and menu controls for added convenience.

Note: This camcorder does not feature a separate viewfinder.

Flash Memory: The Canon FS100 camcorder captures video and still-image footage onto an optional SD or SDHC media card (sold separately). SD and SDHC memory cards offer quick response time for recording and playback. By recording onto flash memory cards, the camcorders power consumption rate is reduced, allowing the battery to last longer. In addition, by using flash memory cards, the camcorder is more shock resistant and is less likely to loose data because there are no moving parts. A Class 2 or higher SD (64MB-2GB)/SDHC (4GB-32GB) card is recommended. Movie recordings require cards with 128 MB of memory or more.

Image Sensor: The FS100 features a 1/6" (3mm) CCD imager with 1,070,000 gross pixels. The 410,000 to 710,000 effective video pixels in 16:9 mode and 310,000 to 690,000 pixels in 4:3 mode provide excellent detail and clarity for exceptional digital video. The 800,000 effective still megapixels in a 4:3 aspect ratio and 600,000 effective still megapixels in a 16:9 aspect ratio provide exceptional digital still photography performance The zoom setting effects the effective pixel count in 16:9 and 4:3 mode.

  • 16:9 Movie Mode:
    • Advanced Zoom: 410,000 (telephoto) and 710,000 (wide-angle)
    • Optical/Digital Zoom: 550,000
  • 4:3 Movie Mode:
    • Advanced Zoom: 310,000 (telephoto) and 690,000 (wide-angle)
    • Optical/Digital Zoom: 690,000
  • Still Images (4:3): 800,000
  • Still Images (16:9): 600,000

Digic DV II: DIGIC DV II ensures optimal video image quality. It also ensures optimal image quality for still images, even though video and still images have different color requirements. The DIGIC DV ll image processing produces video with improved color reproduction; especially in skin tones, and dark and light scenes. It also uses a hybrid noise reduction system that employs two types of noise reduction for high definition images that are crystal clear. Plus, DIGIC DV ll features improved continuous shooting of digital photographs with the FS100. You can shoot five 1152 x 648 still images per second, and enjoy faster processing of your images to your memory card. It also helps lower power consumption for longer battery life.

Genuine Canon Video Lens: The FS100 comes with a Genuine Canon video lens with a 37x Optical zoom and 2000x total digital zoom. The camcorder offer three types of zoom - Optical, Advanced and Digital zoom.

  • 37x Optical Zoom: The zoom range is limited to the optical magnification ratio of the lens which is 37x.
  • 48x/55x Advanced Zoom: In addition to the optical zoom range, the camcorder processes the image digitally to obtain a larger zoom range without any deterioration in image quality. 48x Advanced Zoom is used for 16:9 aspect ratio images, while 55x Advanced Zoom is used for 4:3 aspect ratio images.
  • 2000x Digital Zoom: When this option is selected, the camcorder will switch to digital zoom. With digital zoom the image is processed digitally so image quality will deteriorated the more you zoom in.

Note: The zoom speed can be set to variable or one of three fixed speeds. In the variable position, the zoom speed depends on how far you push the lever. The purpose of the three fixed zoom speeds is a smoother zoom transition, at your choice of speeds.

Image Stabilizer: A high quality electronic image stabilization system corrects camera shake instantly, giving you smooth, stable pictures. It enables you to record shake-free images, even on long telephoto shots without a tripod.

16:9 High Resolution: This Canon FS100 uses the entire width of its image sensor to record video in true 16:9 format. By capturing more pixels, you get better image quality. If you generally play your camcorder footage on a widescreen TV, use the WideScreen mode to record video in the 16:9 aspect ratio. The full width of the CCD imager is used to capture video in true 16:9 format. When playing widescreen footage with the camcorder output set for a 4:3 screen you'll have the letterbox black bars on the top and bottom of the screen.

Focus Modes: The Canon FS100 features a Manual, Auto and Infinity Focus modes.
