Our take on the Samsung UN32H5203

These days, most 32" TVs play the role of secondary TV placed in a bedroom, kitchen or den. Samsung's UN32H5203 delivers a crisp, detailed picture that might give your main TV a run for its money. It has an LED backlight that combines snappy picture contrast with miserly power usage. The thin black bezel framing the screen gives this set an elegant, classy look.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Can't beat it for the money. I've been buying Samsungs of various sizes and found them to have good features at a fair price. And Crutchfield is the best. They know their stuff and are always there to help. Overall a very good value.

Pros: Great picture

Great TV. Great price. Great Buy!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought this as a Christmas gift for my brother, who still had a CRT TV. He loves it, and the built-in WiFi. I won't buy anything but a Samsung, and I won't buy my gear from anywhere except Crutchfield. They sent me a hand-written thank you card for the purchase. Who does that? Incredible!

This was a gift for a granddaughter. Setup couldn't be easier. Picture quality and color from good source material are exceptional at this price. Sound quality is ok. We don't buy these for their ability for wow us with their tiny speakers.

Pros: Simple to use. Fairly straight forward remote. Exceptional picture quality. Connectivity friendly.

Cons: So far, so good.

A Great, Moderately Priced LCD

JoeG from Houston, Texas on 12/28/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My godson was getting a new XBox One for Christmas from his parents so it only made sense to get him his own television for his room. This is about as large as is needed in a moderately sized bedroom and fits perfectly on top of a chest of drawers. I've got a similar Samsung in my home office and felt this was a cost-effective and quality option for a young teen's gaming needs. Very easy setup with reasonable customization options. Audio isn't the world's best but few flatscreens excel in this area. Overall a very good purchase ... prompt shipping from Crutchfield (as always) and at a price point below Amazon and other online retailers.

Pros: Clarity of Picture, contrast, and ease-of-setup. Built-in WiFi is a nice perk.

Cons: Remote is a bit basic but that's to be expected with an entry-level television. Speakers lack depth of sound but that's par for the course for flatscreen televisions.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Picture is great. Features are great. Price was great. Don't use many of the features but may explore more. Sound works well through my receiver.

Pros: This is a great 32 inch TV. Light weight, easy to mount on wall, picture quality and features are all I need and everything works great so far.

Cons: The manual power button (joystick) is a 3 step process. Wish it had a simpler on off button for when Im walking out the door.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Good TV for the money, as advertised. No surprises

Pros: Easy set up and easy to use

Cons: None with the TV. Only con is the way it was promoted, I purchased it as "scratch & Dent" and found it to be more of a "used" set. Multiple scratches, should have been advertised as used.

SMART TV smarter than me.

Ryan from Charlottesville on 8/20/2014

The TV was easy to set up, and fairly straightforward to operate. I did need to call Samsung to get the ability to download apps from the TV, but was able to get someone to help me right away and they fixed the problem. The SmartTV features take a minute or two to load, which can be annoying, but overall I am happy with the purchase.

Pros: Ease of use, picture quality, WIFI connectivity, price

Cons: Slow startup, needed to call for help to download apps

" Smart " needs more education

Oscar from Chattanooga, TN on 8/20/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Worst audio system! I had to purchase an additional audio surround system! Don't buy it

Pros: 32" Smart price with a $50.00 'sale' price makes for a good price

Cons: Poor definition / over developed remote with features most people will never learn & use. Keep It Simple! Sound system is terrible

Great SMART TV for bedroom or kids room

Jer739 from Marathon, WI on 8/11/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Purchased this for our bedroom and its a very sharp looking TV for the price! Being a smart TV with 1080p makes a huge difference in clarity, and having WiFi and a built in network port makes hooking this up simple and convenient. If you have any trouble with your WiFi disconnecting (I have not yet) then you can run a network cable to the TVs location and that will solve any disconnect issues. I never really thought we would use the features of a "smart" TV but having this option to check the weather or watch youtube videos without a computer attached is really nice. I would definitely buy this again, and would not consider 720p after seeing the clarity of this unit.

Pros: 1080p, smart TV, WiFi and wired networking options.

Cons: Larger TV than I expected (depth wise). If you plan on wall mounting and want something really thin this may not be the best option for you. But as far as features go, you can't go wrong for the price!

Great TV for the money

Pete from Boston, MA on 8/11/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great smart TV for the money. Purchased the 32" version of the 5203 for in front of the treadmill. Other than a Blu-ray, it gets no other external content. Great picture and perfect amount of smart functionality.

Pros: - Great quality picture for the money! - A simple but efficient interface. Better than most. - Plenty of smart TV apps and content. - Has an IR blaster to control my Sony Blu-rayplayer.

Cons: - No way of seeing from the TV the type of signal it is receiving from an HDMI port. - Wish the remote was backlit. - Wish the Blu-ray'S disc menu was easier to access (ie. Menu button on the remote worked to control the Blu-ray player).

Probably the best 32" TV I've owned, This is clear Bright, Smart and best of all it will connect to a home Media Server if it is DLNA enabled. WiFi connectivity works great in my home! We are able to see all my home video collection has no problem reading MKV, AVI and any other format you throw at it. And as always with anything that I buy from Crutchfield the customer service is always on target, the box arrived very well protected.

Pros: a wonderful experience from ordering to installation, if you need a 32" TV this is it!

Cons: None

LED Direct-Lit: Direct-Lit LED backlight technology bridges the gap between lower-cost CCFL (fluorescent) LCD TVs and newer edge-lit LED-LCD TVs. Samsung's Direct-Lit LED-LCD televisions feature LEDs positioned all the way across the LCD panel's back plane (instead of along the side). Unlike "Full-Array" backlight LED-LCD televisions that also feature LEDs positioned along the LCD panel's back plane, the Direct-Lit LED technology uses fewer LEDs and do not offer local dimming. Since there are fewer LEDs, the LCD panel's back plane must be moved farther away from the screen to provide adequate light coverage across the LCD panel, making the TV much deeper than an edge-lit LED-LCD television. Direct-Lit LED backlight technology offers a better picture and is more energy efficient than previous CCFL (fluorescent) LCD televisions, though it requires a much larger cabinet design than newer edge-lit LED-LCD TVs.

Clear Motion Rate 120: Clear Motion Rate (CMR) is Samsung's more comprehensive and accurate measure for how well the LED-LCD TV can display fast-moving images. Previously, motion clarity was expressed simply by the refresh rate, measured in Hz. CMR, however, takes into account all three factors that contribute to motion clarity: panel refresh rate (60Hz), image processor speed and backlight technology. CMR is measured by determining the thinnest line a TV can display in a moving image. The thinner the line, the higher the CMR rating, and the clearer the picture you'll enjoy on the screen.

Wide Color Enhancer Plus + Motion Lighting: With Wide Color Enhancer Plus, you'll witness a wider spectrum of colors on the TV screen, just like the director intended. You'll enjoy enriched colors while watching your favorite movies, and shows, even if it's older, non-HD content. The TV automatically adjust the brightness of the screen in response to the brightness of the room. In bright light, the screen brightens. In dim light, the screen dims.

1080p Resolution: The LED-LCD television displays all inputs at a resolution of 1080p (1920 x 1080). The television's HDMI and component video inputs will accept 1080p (24/60Hz), 1080i, 720p, 480p and 480i video signals.

  • HDMI (v.1.3): The Samsung H5203 series LED-LCD TV features two HDMI 1.3 inputs. In addition, any HDMI input can be used to connect a PC to this TV.
  • Component Video: The Samsung H5203 series LED-LCD TV features a single component video input. The TV's component video input can also be used as a composite video input (480i only).
Note: The TV has built-in over-the-air HDTV (ATSC) and Digital Cable (QAM) tuners with an RF-coaxial input, so you don't need a separate set-top box to receive and decode over-the-air HDTV/SDTV or unencrypted Digital Cable signals.

Picture Control: You can make the following adjustments for an optimum picture.

  • Picture Sizes: You can choose one of the following screen sizes.
    • 16:9: Sets the picture to 16:9 wide mode.
    • Zoom 1: Vertically enlarges the size of the picture and allows you to move the enlarged picture using the arrows on the remote.
    • Zoom 2: Vertically enlarges the size of the picture more than Zoom 1 and allows you to move the enlarged picture using the arrows on the remote.
    • Wide Fit: Proportionally enlarges the picture to fit the entire screen without changing the aspect ratio.
    • 4:3: Sets the picture to 4:3 normal mode with pillars on the left and right of the screen.
    • Screen Fit: See the full image with no resizing when HDMI (720p/1080i/180p) or Component (1080i/1080p) signals are inputted.
    • Smart View 1/2: Reduces the 16:9 picture by 50% (1) or 25% (2).
  • Picture Modes: Picture Modes apply preset adjustments to the picture.
    • Dynamic: increases the brightness of the screen (suitable for bright rooms)
    • Standard: suitable for a normal environment
    • Natural: useful for reducing eye strain
    • Movie: darkens the screen and reduces glare (appropriate for dark rooms)
    • Entertain: sharpens images for a more dynamic viewing experience (only available when connected to a computer)
  • Manual Picture Settings: The TV has several options for manually adjusting the picture quality.
    • Backlight: adjusts the brightness of the LED backlight
    • Contrast: increases or decreases the contrast between dark and light areas of the picture
    • Brightness: adjusts the brightness level of the picture (not as effective as Backlight setting)
    • Sharpness: sharpens or dulls the edges of objects
    • Color: adjusts the color saturation of the picture
    • Tint (G/R): adjusts the amount of green and red in a picture
  • Advanced Picture Settings: The TV also offers more advanced picture adjustments for fine tuning.
    • Dynamic Contrast: adjusts the screen contrast so that the optimal contrast is provided
    • Black Tone: adjusts the black level on the screen to adjust the screen depth
    • Flesh Tone: adjusts the amount of red in skin tones
    • RGB Only Mode: displays the Red, Green, and Blue color for making find adjustments to the hue and saturation
    • Color Space: adjusts the range of colors available to create the image (Auto/Native)
    • White Balance: adjusts the color temperature for more natural picture colors
    • Gamma: adjusts the primary color (red, green, blue) intensity
  • Picture Options: Additional picture options provide you with a better viewing experience.
    • LED Clear Motion: removes drag from fast scenes with a lot of movement to provide a clear picture
    • Color Tone: adjusts the overall color tone of the televisions using one of four presets: Cool, Normal, Warm 1, Warm 2
    • Digital Clean View: if the broadcast signal received by the TV is weak, you can activate the Digital Clean View feature to reduce any static and ghosting that may appear on the screen
    • MPEG Noise Filter: reduces MPEG noise to provide an improved picture
    • HDMI Black Level: select the black level on the screen to adjust the screen depth when you have a component connected via HDMI to the television
    • Film Mode: The TV can be set to automatically sense and process film signals from all sources and adjust the picture from optimum quality. Film mode is supported in TV, AV, Component (480i/1080i), and HDMI (480i/1080i).
Note: You can adjust and store Picture Settings for each external device connected to the TV or apply the settings to all inputs and sources.

PIP (Picture-in-Picture): You can watch the TV's tuner and one external video source (component/HDMI) simultaneously). The component/HDMI source will be displayed as the main picture, while the TV channel will be displayed in a sub-screen, while which can be moved to each corner of the television's screen. You can switch the audio between the main screen and sub-screen.

Audio Features

DTS Premium Sound: The Samsung LED-LCD TV employs DTS Studio Sound processing with DTS TruSurround and DTS TruDialog which will decode DTS-encoded content, such as TV programming, Blu-ray movies, and streaming media, as well as processes stereo content to deliver an optimized virtual surround sound experience with enhanced bass response, clear dialog, and consistent volume levels through the TV speakers.

  • DTS TruSurround: DTS TruSurround is a patented DTS technology that solves the problem of playing 5.1 multichannel content over two speakers. DTS TruSurround delivers a compelling, virtual surround sound experience through any two-speaker playback system, including the internal television speakers. It is fully compatible with all multichannel formats.
  • DTS TruDialog: This function allows you to increase the intensity of a voice over background music or sound effects so that dialogue  can be heard more clearly.
Note: The speakers of this TV provide different sound images according to how you position the television. You can select between "Wall-Mount" or "Stand" to provide the best sound quality based on the television's placement.

5-Band EQ + Sound Modes: You can manually adjusts the TV's built-in 5-band EQ (100 Hz, 300 Hz, 1 kHz, 3 kHz, and 10 kHz) for a more customized sound; or simply choose from the following Preset Sound Modes:

  • Standard: Selects the normal sound mode.
  • Music: Emphasizes music over voices.
  • Movie: Provides the best sound for movies.
  • Clear Voice: Emphasizes voices over other sounds.
  • Amplify: Amplify mode is for people who have difficulty hearing.

Audio Settings: The Samsung TV offers a variety of audio adjustments to meet your listening needs.

  • Auto Volume: Auto Volume automatically adjusts the volume of the desired channel, lowering the sound output when the modulation signal is high or raising the sound output when the modulation signal is low. This reduces the difference in volume when changing channels. The Auto Volume feature can be set to Normal, Night or Off.
  • Audio Delay: The Audio Delay function corrects audio/video mismatch, when watching TV or video, and listening to a digital audio output using an external device such as an AV receiver. You can adjust the audio delay from 0ms to 250 ms.
  • Picture Off: You can turn the television's screen off and still listen to audio.

Audio Outputs: The Samsung LED-LCD television provides an analog and digital audio output.

  • Digital Audio: The optical digital output terminal will output Dolby Digital/DTS (when available) or 2 channel PCM. The digital optical output terminal only sends an audio signal in Dolby Digital/DTS when receiving Dolby Digital/DTS surround sound from a digital broadcast channel through the tuner, network apps, and USB ports on the LED-LCD TV. The optical digital audio output will only output in 2ch stereo from sources connected to the TV via HDMI or RCA.
  • Analog Audio: The television features a 3.5mm (minijack) audio output for connecting the television to an analog 2-channel receiver. You will need a minijack-to-RCA adapter (sold separately) to make a stereo RCA connection between the television and your soundbar speaker or AV receiver. The TV's analog audio output terminals will output 2ch audio from any of the television's source inputs.

Network/USB Functions

Network Connection (wired/wireless): You can set up the Samsung H5203 series LED-LCD TV so that it can access your home network and online Samsung Apps through your local area network (LAN) using a wired (RJ-45 Ethernet) or wireless connection (built-in WiFi). You can setup a wired network connection automatically or manually. You can setup the wireless network connection using these four methods; Automatic, Manual, WPS (PBC), or WPS (PIN). I plugged it in via an eathernet cable to my router [ WILLIAM  Feb 22, 2015 ]
It is not very hard. If you have a moden and wireless router. The smart TV should search for your router, when found type in your password. Good luck. David [ DAVID B  Feb 22, 2015 ]
It does. Just have to hit the Tools button first and it is in that menu. Pete [ Peter  Feb 22, 2015 ]

Jeremy, Speakers are o.k. this is a bedroom tv for us, so it isn't being used very much and quietly mostly. Bob [ BOB  Nov 27, 2014 ]
Speakers are marginal, both in volume and quality, so I bought a soundbar. But in all fairness, I mounted the TV in front of a somewhat noisy treadmill which easily drowned out the TV sound. Also, I may have lost some volume/quality due to the fact that the speakers are on the bottom of the TV which itself was mounted too high above a surface that could reflect the sound. [ Thomas M.  Nov 26, 2014 ]
I run the tv through a vintage stereo. Compared to that, the tv speakers sound very weak. Don't expect too much. Maybe ok for a garage but no bass. [ Erich  Nov 26, 2014 ]
Best I can tell the sound is what you would expect from a TV in this price range. I bought this TV for a new screened in porch so it is outside but protected from the weather. I don't have anything negative to say concerning the TV picture or sound quality. [ Paul  Nov 26, 2014 ]
The sound quality is decent at lower volumes. Fine for a garage tv I would guess. Problem is the volume. I have mine in front of a treadmill and have trouble hearing quieter scenes of movies even with the volume all the way up. I'll be getting a sound bar for that reason. [ Peter  Nov 25, 2014 ]
Sound is fine... No soundbar needed...I have 2 of them.. [ JAMES P  Nov 25, 2014 ]
The sound is decent enough. It's not used for the main room so I have no complaints. I'm also not using a sound bar. [ Judie  Nov 25, 2014 ]
donot know [ JIM  Sep 21, 2014 ]
Using the optical audio out, the TV speakers are still functional and their volume is controlled by the TV remote. I use another remote to control the external speakers, and keep the TV volume at 0. Sorry I can't comment about the analog audio port. [ Thomas M.  Sep 21, 2014 ]
I don't know as I have only used the internal speakers. [ Paul  Sep 21, 2014 ]
We have not received any answers from other customers on your question. I would recommend reaching out to an Advisor by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. They should be able to help answer your question. [ Krissy  Jul 01, 2014 ]  Staff
