Our take on the Samsung UN50HU6950

On average, people get a new TV every seven years or so. If you're looking at 50" models with an eye towards future-readiness, Samsung's UN50HU6950 belongs on your short list. You'll want to so as not to miss any of the super-sharp 3840 x 2160-pixel detail and depth that make 4K images so compelling.

Ready for 4K content right now

Samsung made sure that this set's video processing and connections are as future-ready as the screen. Exhibit A: The UN50HU6950 includes “HEVC” decoding, which means it can display streamed 4K Netflix® content with no additional gear needed. And this TV will be ready for what's coming further in the future, thanks to Samsung's Smart Evolution feature, which provides a goof-proof way to upgrade the TV's inputs, outputs, and processing brains. Think of it as an insurance policy that will keep UN50HU6950 owners up to date on Ultra HD format standards as they evolve.

Samsung Ultra HD media player

Samsung's UHD Video Pack media player.

Samsung's UHD Video Pack (sold separately) lets you instantly make the most of your Samsung Ultra HD TV. Only a little bigger than a smartphone, this 1-terabyte hard drive comes pre-loaded with several full-length movies and nature documentaries, all in spectacular full 4K resolution. Simply connect it to the TV using the supplied USB cable and start enjoying the best picture you've ever seen.

True 4K content will continue to be scarce for a while, but that won't keep you from enjoying a remarkable picture. Samsung made 4K upconversion a top priority as they developed the video processing circuitry for the UN50HU6950. Their UHD Upscaling automatically upconverts any signal to match the screen's 4K resolution. All of your current video sources — Blu-ray player, cable or satellite TV box, game console — will look better than ever.

Smart TV times 4

Samsung UN55U8550 Quad Screen

The Quad Screen feature divides this TV into four screens. Watch a golf tournament on one screen while searching the web for current standings on another. Then watch a video tutorial to master your swing while navigating your Smart TV panel on the fourth screen.

Tablets and smartphones can run circles around many older Smart TVs, but they can't do all the tricks that the UN50HU6950 can. Samsung's speedy quad core processor supports a new Multi-Link feature, which lets you place live TV side-by-side with other apps, like YouTube™ or a web browser — you can browse the web without having to interrupt what you're watching. The Quad Screen feature splits the screen into four quadrants so you can watch TV and stream video at the same time.

Besides surfing the web you can do things like multitask or use one app while downloading another. Whether your connection is wired or wireless, you can do a quick web search while you watch movies and TV shows, and enjoy TV while you chat with friends and family online. Along with built-in apps for services like Netflix®, Hulu Plus™, and YouTube™, you can download new ones from Samsung's large selection of apps.

Samsung's Galaxy phones and tablets add handheld viewing and control

Samsung's AllShare™ Play lets you wirelessly access and stream content from any compatible device. If you have a Galaxy S3 smartphone or Galaxy tablet, you can share movies, photos, and music via the UN50HU6950. Your Wi-Fi® network lets you do things like "toss" photos from your phone or tablet to the screen with the swipe of a finger. Or push streaming video like Netflix movies from device to screen.

Sending content from your phone to your TV is cool, and going TV-to-phone is even cooler. Just download Samsung's free Smart View app and use the TV View feature to mirror whatever's on the UN50HU6950's screen on any compatible smartphone or tablet. You can leave the room anytime without leaving your entertainment behind. It's like a whole-house TV system you can hold in your hand.

Delay b/w Picture & Audio, horrible TV

Gorfe from the Washington, DC Area on 9/26/2015

This TV has promise but has a Huge delay between the picture and the audio. I'm not the only person to report this (,, Amazon, etc). I've had multiple service calls and a technician to replace the main frame, but the issue still exists. The picture comes first, so the audio actually needs to be advanced rather than a delay. Samsung won't replace the TV or help me out at all. Very disappointing!!

Cons: Delay between picture and audio

Great colors and contrast. Terrific image on 4K screen.

GlassHouse from NewYork on 3/2/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This TV is disappointing. The glare and soap opera effect are both extreme. If you plan to have this TV in a bright room you may want to consider another option. The glare is very distracting no matter how you adjust the various screen settings. The soap opera effect is also a big problem. This is a 4K HD device yet most anything you watch has a very cheap appearance. Other Samsung models have a setting which can reduce this problem. This model does not. The picture on my 7 year old Sharp Aquos is far better. If you are purchasing this expecting to be impressed with the latest picture quality then keep looking.

Pros: Minimal design

Cons: Picture Quality! - Glare & Soap Opera Effect

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Although TV channels are not in 4K format currently, with the Samsung 6950 you are ready when it happens. In the meantime, I am enjoying an outstanding picture for a very reasonable price. In fact, I could have spent a lot more for a 50inch TV and could not have had a better picture.

Pros: Everything except the sound click when you change volume

Cons: Sound click when you change channels.

Samsung UHD Excellent Value!

RoyG from Houston TX on 2/15/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this television to replace a dying LED DLP set in my bedroom. I have not yet viewed any true 4k media, but the picture clarity of upscaled DirecTV 1080p and 1080i is excellent! I now want to purchase a 65" or 75" 8550 or 8700 series for the living room! DirecTV offers some 4k media which I may order just to see the (likely) beauty of the 2160 signal on this set. Netflix offers 4k programming choices, as well, but I am not yet a member. I bought a "scratch-and-dent" set for $850 and I see no defects on the set at all and I have high confidence in Crutchfield. Even before ordering/viewing 4k media, I still think this beautiful television is a great value. Smart Remote was a little clumsy until I learned how to use it and now I am fine with it. Smart Remote I received did not work at first -- possibly because open box set may not have original remote unit with it. I called Crutchfield Tech Support and the advisor had me go through a 15 second "reset" process to "match" the remote to the set (sort of like bluetooth) and now it works flawlessly.

Pros: Picture clarity and quality; excellent and seamless interface with DirecTV; ease of set-up regimen (during new, first-time power-up, the set "boots up" like a computer and guides user through several set-up and settings steps); another Samsung quality product added to all of my past good experience with Samsung products.

Cons: No "shortcut" to sleep timer on remote control -- user must go through several menu levels to get to sleep timer function. A little bit of a nuisance if you like to fall asleep to the television, as I do.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Such an incredible picture, lightweight (carried up two flights of stairs alone), pretty thin. TV comes default on the high efficiency/power saving mode so once you turn that off the brights are incredible and the darks are the darkest. Essentially it seems resolution is increased across the board (480p becomes 720p, 720p becomes 1080p) so even watching 1080p the picture is great and color palatte is superb. Watching 4k (only netflix and amazon instant) I've sat 3 feet in front of the TV for hours and still didn't see any pixelation. The remote is so cool, motion sensitive so it's like a built in Wii (some games included too) and universal so you can control everything including directv, blu-ray, xbox one. SmartTV options are fantastic--Netflix, Amazon Instant, News apps, Weather apps, etc. so no need for a Roku or Chromecast. If you have a Samsung tablet you can stream your tablet onto the TV wirelessly with ease. Was a bit sceptical given the price is so much lower than other 4k Smart TV's, and I paid $799 no shipping no tax because of a black friday special. This thing is amazing, I've had it for a few months now and still can't find any downsides or regrets.

Pros: Everything

Cons: Nil

Excellent TV. Smart TV's now make sense with streaming 4K content within the apps since most of our peripherals such as receivers, gaming systems, and streaming devices do not have HDMI 2.0. Picture quality is as excepted from Samsung. The remote puts a dot on the screen when you point it at the TV and uses this to make selections in the menu's. Sometimes I get the dot and sometimes I don't? Mute button is in a bad location. I hit it every time I pickup the Very Small remote. I'd rather be able to fully control the TV from a tablet/phone. I upgraded from a 2007 model Samsung 6 series 40".

Pros: Slim bezel, lightweight, quality picture, HDMI 2.0, Firmware upgradeable, Video streaming from devices

Cons: Remote control RF is inconsistent, Remote control does not light up

Good Choice!

Nice to have the latest technology and a very affordable price. Very good picture, amazing features and good sound.

Pros: Product is so good, I'll buy it all over again.

Cons: There is no numbers on the remote, so you have to call a "Virtual" on the screen remote that you eventually get a hang of it.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Even using an over-the-air antenna (tempoarily) with this tv, the picture is astounding. The set up was easy and we are plnning to move it into the tv room this weekend. Even old tv programs look new and clear as a live performance! I cannot wait to hook it up to the Blu-Ray and Chromecast, so we can experience movies on this set.

Pros: Amazing picture. Good sound quality. Easy set up. No difficulties so far.

Cons: Delivery took over a week. Had to provide the UPS (not the same as UPS Brown-too bad, they are great) folks with a five-hour window for delivery-even the cable company and plumber only require a three-hour window! That delayed it more. I was especially irritated because after much discussion, the guy on the phone accepted my suggestion of my first vacation day telling me he could keep it in a secure warehouse and then they called to tell me that was not possible unless I paid a storage fee!

Nice TV

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This product is amazing! The picture quality is like nothing you have seen before and clear as if you were in the actual setting. The ease of using the functions is great. Accessing the Internet, you tube, and being able to mirror my phone is awesome. I would recommend this product to anyone looking for an amazing television with extra features.

Pros: Fantastic picture, access to online programs such as YouTube, Pandora, Netflix and other Internet programs.

Cons: As of right now only complaint is worth the remote. It is very small and not easy to maneuver depending on the size of your hands. Also it had voice command which sometimes does not understand the command you are giving.

Good but not great...

Carl85 from California on 12/16/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a good TV, with solid picture quality (good black levels) and nice smart TV features. That being said some Smart TV features/apps don't work well (unreliable and glitchy), hopefully there will be some more software updates to solve these problems. One nice surprise with this TV is that the speakers actually produce good audio, you won't necessarily need to buy external speakers. Overall this TV is a pretty solid performer and a great value.

Pros: Great black levels Above average audio quality from speakers

Cons: Smart TV software/apps seem a little glitchy. Good value but other 4k TVs are an even better value

Awesome TV!

Awesome picture. It's like the actors are right there in your living room. TV is very light weight and easy to move around if needed. Very vibrant colors.

Pros: Great picture and color. Lightweight. Lots of options (Netflix, youtube, internet, pandora, etc...)

Cons: Somewhat of a difficult time reconnecting Netflix and refinding the basic channels we had on our other TV.

Very nice product

I called support team during product assemble, they are very patience and clarified all my doubts. Regarding product, great picture quality and sound system....Enjoying a lot to watch...especially action movies. Also I registered this product in Samsung website and able to see that product is genuine and more information. I would definitely recommend this company for all my friends.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent TV, the technology of the UltraHD 4K picture is unbelievable, it's almost like 3D. There is a one inch frame surrounding the screen so it's almost all picture. I have my internet and surround sound through the PS3 for Netflix and Amazon so there was only one HDMI cable to attach to the television. Netflix is streaming Breaking Bad and House of Cards in 4K so it's a true test of how good the technology looks. We're watching all of our Blu-Ray movies again because it's like watching them for the first time. If you're looking to get a new television I would recommend the 4K Ultra-HD.

Once I unwrapped this TV, I gave it a quick test. Using my OPPO blu-ray player, viewing one movie after the next... I didn't see any pixelation for fast action scenes, blacks were black, whites were white.. reds didn't bleed. The remote takes some getting use to, but works well. As with most panels now-a-days, it also has smart functions (SmartTV Samsung). Beware of the "mute" button on the side of the remote, if you press and hold, the TV will speak all functions you've accessed (ANNOYING). The price is very decent for a 4K unit. Very happy with my purchase!

Pros: -Design -Thickness -Price point -Picture quality -

Cons: The remote

Despite Samsung's blatant disregard for non Samsung smartphones/tablets, this TV is still a front-runner in the 4k market.

Pros: Picture is like looking out the window with 20/20 vision. Sleek design. Many inputs.

Cons: Many of the advertised features are only available via Samsung smartphones or tablets, or spending even more money on things such as a proprietary Samsung hard drive or Samsung webcam. The universal remote cannot currently operate a DVR (Samsung says an update is coming).

Ultra-HD 4K Resolution w/ UHD Upscaling: The Samsung HU6950 series LED-LCD TV has a display resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 (4K) and will display all video at that resolution; regardless of input signal. The Ultra-HD TV even offers "HEVC" decoding, which means it'll be able to display 4K content from online movie & TV show providers (like Netflix). 4K provides 4x higher resolution than current 1080p high-definition TVs, ensuring a truly immersive experience for all your favorite movies and TV shows.  UHD Upscaling delivers the complete Ultra-HD picture experience with a proprietary process including signal analysis, noise reduction, UHD upscaling, and detail enhancement to seamlessly upconvert SD, HD, or full-HD content to Ultra-HD-level picture quality.

Note: You can upgrade this HU6950 series LED-LCD TV with Samsung's One Connect Box (sold separately) to unlock new features and services offered by Samsung Electronics. With the One Connect Box from Samsung, you can update the TV with new software and technology that will adapt to future Ultra-HD standards and improve TV performance; faster speed, more content, more features. The One Connect Box simply plugs into the TV using a single proprietary cable.

LED-Edge Backlight w/ UHD Dimming: The Samsung HU6950 series LED-LCD TV uses LED-Edge backlighting with UHD Dimming to maximize the contrast between lights and darks for a picture that is as true-to-life as possible. The television's white LEDs are arranged along the left and right edges of the screen and a proprietary light guide is used to focus its luminance inwards towards the middle of the screen for a more uniform brightness. UHD Micro Dimming precisely scans an incredible amount of zones across the entire image and adjusts brightness to deliver deeper darks and brighter whites. It virtually eliminates the "halo" effect and image distortion, so you'll enjoy a crystal clear picture

Ultra-Clear Panel + Wide Color Enhancer: The Samsung Ultra-Clear Panel absorbs ambient light, reduces reflections and lets the picture come to life. It displays deeper blacks and enhanced contrast for crystal clarity, without glare, so you can see clearly and enjoy more detail. With Wide Color Enhancer Plus, you'll witness a wider spectrum of colors on the TV screen, just like the director intended. You'll enjoy enriched colors while watching your favorite movies, and shows, even if it's older, non-HD content.

Clear Motion Rate 240: Clear Motion Rate (CMR) is Samsung's more comprehensive and accurate measure for how well the LED-LCD TV can display fast-moving images. Previously, motion clarity was expressed simply by the refresh rate, measured in Hz. CMR, however, takes into account all three factors that contribute to motion clarity: panel refresh rate, image processor speed and backlight technology. CMR is measured by determining the thinnest line a TV can display in a moving image. The thinner the line, the higher the CMR rating, and the clearer the picture you'll enjoy on the screen.

  • Panel Refresh Rate (Hz): The TV has a native refresh rate of 60Hz.
  • Auto Motion Plus: Samsung's proprietary Auto Motion Plus image processing technology is faster and more responsive than conventional image processors, as it interpolates intermediate frames to smooth out the image. Auto Motion Plus removes blur and judder from scenes with large amounts of rapid movement to provide a clearer picture. Auto Motion Plus  reduces blur so that action movies, sports and video games have enhanced clarity. Advanced panels and unique backlight technology combine with proprietary algorithms to reduce the response time and yield a more accurate image reproduction with faster onscreen motion. Auto Motion Plus can be set to Clear, Standard, Smooth, Custom, or Off.
  • LED Backlight Technology: Samsung's Edge-Lighting Backlight technology regulates output precisely in synchronization with the screen refresh to lessen the time it is lit, reducing ghosting and motion blur.

Video Inputs: The Samsung Ultra-HD LED-LCD TV offers Ultra-HD, high-definition, and standard definition video inputs.

  • HDMI 2.0: The Samsung LED-LCD TV features four HDMI 2.0 inputs to connect to your Blu-ray/DVD player, Satellite/Cable receiver, or AV receiver. In addition, any HDMI input can be used to connect a PC to this TV. The television's HDMI inputs will accept 3,840 x 2,160 (24/60Hz), 1080p (24/60Hz), 1080i, 720p, 480p and 480i video signals.
    • HDCP 2.2: HDCP 2.2 is supported only by the TV's HDMI (MHL) input; HDCP is short for "High bandwidth Digital Content Protection" and is used for 4K video copyright protection for compatibility with 4K Blu-ray players and 4K Satellite/Cable providers.
    • 4:4:4 Color Subsampling: All four HDMI inputs will support up to 4:4:4 chroma subsampling for full color data rendering of 4K video; however the HDMI (MHL) input is limited to 30 fps in 4:4:4 mode. 4:2:2 (60/30fps) and 4:2:0 (60fps) is also supported by the TV. With 4:4:4 color, luminance (brightness) and chroma (color) are sampled at the same rate, resulting in an RGB color palette as big as the video sampling rate for a video image with more total colors, plus greater color accuracy and detail. You must enable 4:4:4 & 4:2:2 color subsampling by turning on the "UHD Color" setting within the TV's on-screen menu.
  • Analog: The Samsung LED-LCD TV features a single component video input which will accept 1080p (24/60Hz), 1080i, 720p, 480p and 480i video signals. The TV also features one composite video input which support up to 480i only.
Note: The TV feature a single RF-type coaxial input for connecting an external indoor/outdoor antenna. The unit has built-in over-the-air HDTV (ATSC) tuner, so you don't need a separate set-top box to receive and decode over-the-air HDTV/SDTV or unencrypted Digital Cable signals (up to 1080i).

HDMI (MHL) Port: The HDMI 3 port is designed for the connection of select mobile phones and other portable electronic devices using the new MHL (Mobile High-Definition Link) standard. Audio Features

DTS Premium Sound: The Samsung LED-LCD TV employs DTS Studio Sound processing with DTS TruSurround and DTS TruDialog which will decode DTS-encoded content, such as TV programming, Blu-ray movies, and streaming media, as well as processes stereo content to deliver an optimized virtual surround sound experience with enhanced bass response, clear dialog, and consistent volume levels through the TV speakers.

  • DTS TruSurround: DTS TruSurround is a patented DTS technology that solves the problem of playing 5.1 multichannel content over two speakers. DTS TruSurround delivers a compelling, virtual surround sound experience through any two-speaker playback system, including the internal television speakers. It is fully compatible with all multichannel formats.
  • DTS TruDialog: This function allows you to increase the intensity of a voice over background music or sound effects so that dialogue  can be heard more clearly.
Note: The speakers of this TV provide different sound images according to how you position the television. You can select between "Wall-Mount" or "Stand" to provide the best sound quality based on the television's placement.

5-Band EQ + Sound Modes: You can manually adjusts the TV's built-in 5-band EQ (100 Hz, 300 Hz, 1 kHz, 3 kHz, and 10 kHz) for a more customized sound; or simply choose from the following Preset Sound Modes - Standard (normal mode), Music (music mode), Movie (movie mode), Clear Voice (emphasizes voices), and Amplify (increases clarity for people who have difficulty hearing).

Audio Extras: The Samsung TV offers a variety of audio adjustments to meet your listening needs.

  • Auto Volume: Auto Volume automatically adjusts the volume of the desired channel, lowering the sound output when the modulation signal is high or raising the sound output when the modulation signal is low. This reduces the difference in volume when changing channels. The Auto Volume feature can be set to Normal, Night or Off.
  • Audio Delay: The Audio Delay function corrects audio/video mismatch, when watching TV or video, and listening to a digital audio output using an external device such as an AV receiver. You can adjust the audio delay from 0ms to 250 ms.
  • Picture Off: You can turn the television's screen off and still listen to audio.

Audio Outputs: The Samsung LED-LCD television provides an analog and digital audio output.

  • Digital Audio (w/ DTS Neo 2:5): The optical digital output terminal will output Dolby Digital/DTS (when available) or 2 channel PCM. The digital optical output terminal only sends an audio signal in Dolby Digital/DTS when receiving Dolby Digital/DTS surround sound from a digital broadcast channel through the tuner, network apps, and USB ports on the LED-LCD TV. The optical digital audio output will only output in 2ch stereo or a matrixed 5.1ch signal (DTS Neo 2:5) from sources connected to the TV via HDMI or RCA.
  • Analog Audio: The television features a 3.5mm (minijack) audio output for connecting the television to an analog 2-channel receiver. You will need a minijack-to-RCA adapter (sold separately) to make a stereo RCA connection between the television and your soundbar speaker or AV receiver. The TV's analog audio output terminals will output 2ch audio from any of the television's source inputs.

ARC (Audio Return Channel): The Audio Return Channel within the television's HDMI 4 input enables the TV, via a single HDMI cable, to send audio data "upstream" to an A/V receiver; increasing user flexibility and eliminating the need for any separate S/PDIF audio connection. This feature allows audio to be sent from the television to your A/V receiver through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio/video to the television. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to the TV. ARC allows audio from the TV tuner, Network connection, inserted USB device, HDMI inputs, or any analog connected device to be heard through your ARC compatible AV receiver via the television's HDMI ARC input. The audio from the TV's tuner, network connection, and USB port can pass as Dolby Digital or 2ch PCM. HDMI and analog connected devices will be output as 2ch PCM only.

Note: Both the television and the receiver must support ARC for this function to work properly. When connecting an A/V receiver that is compatible with Audio Return Channel (ARC), connect it to the TV's HDMI 4 input. If connecting a system that is incompatible with Audio Return Channel (ARC), an additional audio connection via Digital Audio Out (Optical) is necessary.

SoundShare: The TV is compatible with the SoundShare feature found on some Samsung active soundbar speaker systems). SoundShare makes a wireless connection between the TV and the speaker system via Bluetooth. Once the two are paired, you can control the volume and mute the sound by using the remote control from the TV or the speaker system. SoundShare can be found on select Samsung active soundbar speaker systems (sold separately).

You will notice better picture quality with this television. We have not yet viewed a 4K video on our television, but notice a better picture with regular 1080p videos and even regular TV through an antena. [ Michael  Nov 06, 2014 ]
The picture quality on this TV is so good I don't think it matters at this point. Once 4k become available, I'm sure you will need to upgrade. [ moises  Nov 06, 2014 ]
Since my player was older I purchased a new one soon after receiving the 4k tv, so can't answer. However, I do appreciate the 4k yet anxious to see more broadcasting and "pure" 4k DVDs. Amazon has postponed twice the delivery of travel DVDs since ordering days after receiving the 4k. [ sterling  Nov 06, 2014 ]
I have not used my blue ray player since I have had my new TV--the TV is now $200 less than when I purched it--BUMMER-- John Hamilton [ JOHN  Nov 05, 2014 ]
I just used my blue ray player I noticed a better picture from using it so save your money and use what you will not be disappointed [ FRED S  Nov 05, 2014 ]
Hi Ken, Eventually, when 4K content comes to Blu Ray disc (which is soon), you will have to upgrade to a 4K Blu Ray player. For now, you can continue to use your current Blu Ray player and see the improvement in quality. However, the difference won't be as significant due to limitation of the Blu Ray disc (not your TV). Hope this helps. Best, U [ Uday  Nov 05, 2014 ]
Same question after watching a football game and noticing pixelation. I have Dish Network. [ MattP  Dec 11, 2014 ]
