Our take on the Samsung QN55Q8FN by Crutchfield's Steve Kindig
Samsung's best 55" TV for 2018
Samsung's QN55Q8FN is their best-performing 55" QLED TV for 2018. What sets it apart from most other TVs is its full-array LED backlight with local dimming (FALD). That's the gold standard for backlighting technology.
The QN55Q8FN's LED grid has hundreds of independently controllable "zones," to deliver precise lighting across the entire screen. The combination of deep blacks and brilliant highlights creates a stunning sense of realism — especially when viewing HDR-enhanced content. This TV also has Samsung's most effective anti-reflective screen ever.
A billion reasons to step into the world of QLED
Samsung continues to push the boundaries of color with the latest quantum dot technology in the QN55Q8FN. They found a way to tune the output of the quantum dots so that they produce purer reds and greens, allowing the TV to cover 100% of the P3 color space — the standard for digital cinema and HDR movies. QLED TVs can reproduce over a billion shades.
The QN55Q8FN also has outstanding "color volume." Color volume is a way of measuring color performance that factors in picture brightness. Most TVs lose some color accuracy as the picture gets brighter. But QLED maintains full color accuracy and saturation at any brightness level. Colors pop like they do in real life.
Amazing picture quality with 4K and HDR — and every other source
With a picture this vibrant, you'll want to feed the QN55Q8FN the highest quality signals you can find. Hands down, the best available 4K source is a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player. Hollywood will release hundreds more movies on Ultra HD Blu-ray this year, and most of those discs will also be HDR-enhanced. There are 4K web streaming options, too, including Netflix®, Amazon Instant Video, and Vudu. Many of their 4K offerings also feature HDR.
But you don't need native 4K content to be knocked out by the QN55Q8FN's picture. Samsung's engineers made 4K upconversion a top priority while developing this set's video processing circuitry. UHD Upscaling automatically upconverts any signal to match the screen's 4K resolution. All your current video sources will look better than ever.
Change the channel? Adjust the volume? Just say the word.
Samsung's slender OneRemote is one of the smartest remotes we've seen. It automatically detects, identifies, and controls your connected devices and content. Use the OneRemote's microphone to access Bixby, the TV's built-in intelligent voice assistant. Bixby makes it easy to change channels, search for content, or even ask about the weather, using only your voice. Just click voice recognition on your remote or smartphone, and Bixby is at your command.

Features and Specs
QLED TV: Samsung's QLED TV utilizes Quantum Dots along with Samsung's Q-Engine to produce an immersive viewing experience with a wide range of color, exceptional contrast, and accurate detail. Quantum Dots are nano-sized, cadmium-free, finely tuned particles that turn light into the brilliant billion plus colors you experience on QLED TVs. Quantum dots are inorganic particles that resist wear out, so you can enjoy superb picture quality for years. As some TVs age, you may see that colors are less vibrant. QLED TVs are built to last and provide a vibrant picture even after long periods of time. Samsung's metal alloy quantum dot pixels feature inorganic materials that are engineered for durability and resistance to fading.
- Ultra HD Premium: Samsung's QLED TV bears the Ultra HD Premium logo and is certified as Ultra HD Premium. This means the QLED TV can deliver 4K clarity with exceptional HDR performance and more expansive color for a cinematic viewing experience as the director intended. To learn more about the UHDA, please click here.
- 4K Ultra HD Connected: Samsung's QLED meets the highest 4K Ultra High-Definition standards as defined by the Consumer Technology Association (CTA). Click here for more information.
Q-Engine: Samsung engineers developed the exclusive Q-Engine, a powerful processor that optimizes your content for 4K clarity, color, and HDR in real time.
- Q Color: QLED televisions can produce 100% color volume in the DCI-P3 color space, the format for most cinema screen and HDR movies for television. By definition, Color Volume is an index of how well colors are reproduced in richness and accuracy at different brightness. With higher color volume, you get a wider, more diverse range of color that feels rejuvenated at higher brightness levels. Samsung QLED TV delivers 100% color volume. QLED TVs with 100% Color Volume deliver a brilliant visual experience by providing a rejuvenating effect for colors that may appear dull or faded in challenging content.
- Q Contrast Elite: Samsung QLED TV lets you experience dramatic depth and picture detail with incredibly deep blacks. You get a realistic picture, whether you're watching in a room drenched with light or with no light at all. Q Contrast Elite utilizes Ultra Black Elite technology with an anti-reflective protective film and a Full-Array LED backlight system with controlled dimming for superior contrast levels.
Q HDR Elite: Q HDR Elite was created by combining Samsung's QLED and HDR10+ technology to give you a wider range of brightness and contrast, bringing all the picture nuances to life. As a result, you'll see colors in movies and shows that "pop", just as the director intended-in stunning high dynamic range (no more details hidden in the shadows).
10-Bit LCD Panel w/ Ultra-Wide Viewing Angle: With a 10-bit panel, Samsung's QLED TVs are capable of displaying tons of colors with fine steps of gradation. With so many more colors to express, you'll see a picture that is more detailed and natural when compared to conventional 8-bit panels. The Samsung QLED TV also offers an ultra-wide viewing angle, so practically any seat in the room can deliver an exceptional viewing experience.
Full Array Backlight + Ultra Black Elite Technology: Smartly controlled zones of the QLED TV's Full Array LED Backlight System adjust automatically to reveal detail and depth from ultra black to pure white. The QLED TV also utilizes Samsung's Ultra Black Elite technology which consists of an outer layer of nano-sized ridges along the LCD panel to better absorb or re-direct light which in turn prevents reflection and glare. The Ultra Black Elite feature further enhances contrast and preserves deep blacks and color richness in brighter room light settings.
HDR (High Dynamic Range): The Samsung QLED TV features the ability to provide a premium High Dynamic Range (HDR) experience, with a higher level of contrast between light and dark images. HDR delivers a much higher level of contrast between light and dark to produce an image that is more realistic and closer to what the content creator imagined. This increased contrast reveals the subtle nuances of the image, from detailed blacks and shadows to the brightest whites and colors, plus greater depth. In addition to supporting the standard HDR10 format, the Samsung QLED TV also supports HDR10+ and HLG; as well as HDR+.
- HDR+: One of the biggest benefits of HDR+ is its ability to upgrade Standard Dynamic Range (SDR) content to HDR-like picture quality, allowing viewers to enjoy all of their favorite content in the highest picture quality possible. With HDR native content, HDR+ also uncovers previously hidden images from darker content scenes, supplementing the level of brightness to express objects hidden in darker shadows. For brighter content scenes, HDR+ increases the level of contrast ratio to differentiate objects from the background, while still depicting more image details on the screen for an overall better picture.
- HDR10+: Samsung Electronics and Amazon Prime Video announced the entire Prime Video HDR library is now available in HDR10+, a new open standard that leverages dynamic metadata to produce enhanced contrast and colors on an expanded range of televisions. Prime Video is the first streaming service provider to deliver HDR10+ content to its users. The HDR10+ technology on Prime Video incorporates dynamic metadata that allows the Samsung QLED TV to adjust brightness levels on a scene-by-scene or even frame-by-frame basis. By applying individualized tone mapping to each scene, HDR10+ delivers an incredible viewing experience. The picture quality offers an enhanced visual experience with more detailed expressions, brighter shadow areas and more accurate color renderings that stay true to the creator's original intent.
- HLG: HLG (Hybrid-Log Gamma) is primarily designed for live video feed and over-the-air broadcasts. It uses no pre-encoded metadata and is backwards compatible with SDR. HLG's native compatibility allows much of today's existing SDR infrastructure to be re-used for HDR in the future.
MR 240 + Auto Motion Plus: The Samsung QLED TV combines its 120Hz native panel refresh rate with Samsung's proprietary MR 240 & Auto Motion Plus image processing technology, which is faster and more responsive than conventional image processors, as it interpolates intermediate frames to smooth out the image. MR 240 & Auto Motion Plus helps to remove blur and judder from scenes with large amounts of rapid movement to provide a clearer picture. MR 240 & Auto Motion Plus reduces blur so that action movies, sports and video games have enhanced clarity. Advanced panel and unique backlight technology combine with proprietary algorithms to reduce the response time and yield a more accurate image reproduction with faster onscreen motion.
HDMI 2.0a Inputs: The Samsung QLED TV is equipped with four HDMI 2.0a inputs to connect to your Blu-ray player, Satellite/Cable receiver, Game Console, and/or AV receiver. Any HDMI input can also be used to connect a PC to this TV. All HDMI inputs are 4K compatible, HDCP 2.2 compliant, and support 4:4:4 color subsampling. Please use a premium high speed HDMI cable with 18 Gbps and above to view 4K HDR content.
- Ultra-HD 4K Resolution & Upscaling: The Samsung QLED TV has a display resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 (4K) and will display all video at that resolution, regardless of input signal, thanks to UHD upscaling. UHD Upscaling delivers the complete Ultra-HD picture experience with a proprietary process including signal analysis, noise reduction, UHD upscaling, and detail enhancement to seamlessly upconvert SD, HD, or full-HD content to Ultra-HD-level picture quality. Supported input video resolutions include 4k (24/30/50/60Hz), 1080p (24/30/50/60Hz), 1080i (50/60Hz), 720p (50/60Hz), 480p (60Hz), and 480i (60Hz).
- Color Subsampling: With 4:4:4 color subsampling, luminance (brightness) and chroma (color) are sampled at the same rate; resulting in an RGB color palette as big as the video sampling rate for a video image with more total colors, plus greater color accuracy and detail. 4:2:2 (50/60p) and 4:2:0 (50/60p) are also supported by all HDMI inputs.
- HDCP 2.2 Compliant: HDCP 2.2 compliance makes the TV fully compatible with the latest copyright protection standard for 4K video transmission from Ultra-HD Blu-ray players and 4K Satellite//Cable providers.

Why did you buy this?
