Our take on the Samsung PN59D7000

Samsung's gorgeous plasma picture is deeply satisfying
Picture depth has always been a strength of plasma TVs. Samsung's PN59D7000 creates big, bold, high-impact images whether you're watching 2D or 3D video. 3D certainly makes you feel more a part of the on-screen action, but 3D content is still scarce. Here's the deal: the PN59D7000 is ready anytime you decide to pick up a pair or two of Samsung's active glasses and start enjoying 3D. In the meantime you'll be watching one of the best TVs out there for 2D.

Beautiful Plasma

SteveC from San Jose, CA on 1/2/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I started with a Sony CRT HDTV, as it was rated the best possible HD picture fidelity. I switched to LCD as CRT technology faded from the scene. Finally, after studying and viewing all that I could find, I became convinced Plasma technology offered the very best fidelity of all HDTVs. After over a year with this set, I am convinced Plasma is indeed the best picture available (not counting OLED). The black levels achieved allow for colors to jump right off the screen, delivering such a vibrant image it's nearly unbelievable. I purchased the matt type screen, not glossy, and if I had it to do over, I'd have gone with glossy. Other than that, I'm still in awe of this TV. Even if you're buying it used, go for it, you will not be disappointed. At the time I bought this set, Crutchfield was offering a free Onkyo receiver - the value was unbeatable at $1,399 for the pair.

Pros: Fantastic fidelity. Easy to use and adjust settings. Access to in-depth settings is a definite plus, since most of the advanced settings are usually only available through service menus.

Cons: Sound output is marginal, but one should be using an adequate receiver and speaker system if investing in this level of image fidelity at such large screen sizes. TV audio is largely irrelevant.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was a little apprehensive about buying a plasma but it has been great. We don't have a terribly bright living room and there's been no problem w reflection. We really like the TV!

Pros: Great picture/color. No motion blur.

Cons: ?

Awesome TV, but with a few ticks.

Shanekx34 from Port Tobacco, MD on 11/19/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am a huge advocate of plasmas. Nutshell, the only downfalls of a modern plasma are: extra weight (this TV weights close to 70 lbs without the stand, which is also heavy); the fact that plasmas are power hungry, but honestly, you'd never notice the difference in your electric bill; you do see some glare if your room gets lots of sun. Other than that, plasmas are still the tops....deeper blacks, more natural/theater-like displays, no motion blur - in general, a gorgous picture. Did a lot of research before replacing my 6 year old 42" Samsung plasma, which also has a gorgous picture. This D7000 was rated 3rd best tv of all time; won CNET editor's choice 2011; most recommended tv overall of 2011. Has the same picture/screen as the D8000 (top of the brand), only difference is the lack of a keyboard-remote & voice recognition for certain controls - cool, but not worth the extra $. I bought my 59D7000 in Oct '12 through Crutchfield - as always, Crutchfield was wonderful, helpful and had it shipped to my door on a fricking fighter jet (in 2 days). The price was right considering in 2011 it retailed for $2300-$3K. After some general setup, the TV does have the best picture I have ever seen. However, I have a couple complaints - the background hiss (well-known) is unnoticeable to all but me; the tv's bezel looks great but is plastic and "creeks" when it is warming up in a cold heat-pump controlled room due to temp changes - was not as bad on my old tv.

Pros: Gorgous picture! Great looks, hanging on my wall. Brushed gray bezel is thin and concentrates your focus on the picture. TV is ultra thin. Lots of controls/settings to adjust pic to meet your desires. Great price, thanks Crutchfield!

Cons: Background hiss, but I am the only one who notices it and I only hear it when starting up the tv or changing a channel (no volume). The "creeking" bezel - partly my fault for having a heat-pump controlled room that never provides a truly warm surrounding in Nov. Once the tv is fully warm, the creeking is almost non-existant. It is a really heavy tv and was a bear to hang on my wall by myself with my wife as the mount guide - recommend a friend. But my old 42" weighed the same, so this is a +

Great TV

Ron V from Miltona MN on 11/1/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great TV, GREAT PICTURE, no problems, no buzzing like reported by other users. I would have given it 5 star, but 2D to 3D was not explaind well enough in the manual. I have Dish and have had it for 5 years and the recever is 5 years old, my thought was you could get 3D by just going from 2D to 3D, after pairing the 3D glasses, well thats what the manual says, not true, you have to have a new receiver from Dish or Direct TV, or a DVD 3D player, well I dont have a 3D DVD blue ray player, so I tryed to use the 2D to 3D on the remote, and it dose not work. Their is nothing in the manual that explains that you have to have up to date receiver, and that will cost you more, so I dont have 3D yet. I called Samsung and they sent out service tech, and he could not get the 3D working, and he did not know that you have to have up to date recicever, I figured this out by calling Dish, so 4 star, it should have been in the manual. As of right now I still dont know if the 3D works. Oh by the way Cruchfield was great with this order. and I called Cruchfield about this problem and they did not know about having a new receiver to make this work.

Pros: Great picture, easy to use remote

Cons: 2D to 3D dose not work

Greaat value at Crutchfield. Excellent picture.

Jim S from Endwell, NY on 9/30/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent picture - great value at Crutchfield with 24 months interest free financing from GE Capital. The reason I didn't give the unit 5 stars in the build quality section is that I got this set initially and the unit was dead on arrival. No on/off indicator light, no picture ... stone dead. Crutchfield promptly replaced it with another unit and it is great. It replaced a Panasonic 50inch plasma. Very easy to navigate menu's on this unit. I am pleased. I would highly recommend this TV at this price. Plasma is second to none. 600hz rules for clear unblurred motion. The 3D and simulated 3D are also fun to use. The picture on my set seemed dim and I could not brighten it with cell light and brightness on max. After 4 or 5 hours of use the screen brightened and is now fine. I had to actually turn the brightness down after a few days of use. Not sure why this happened ... but the picture is just fine now.

Pros: Great Picture. Great value. Easy to navigate menu's.

Cons: First unit showed up Dead. Crutchfield sent another.

Very ahppy with this TV!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

What a great value! I was worried purchasing this tv given the problems I read that the earlier builds had. Luckily, I have not encountered any of these. I have not used the 3d...not a real fan of this technology. I was amazed at how quick it was delivered, ordered it Tuesday at 1130pm and had it by noon on Friday. The delivery driver even gave me a one hour time frame for delivery so I did not have to take time away from work. I was taken better care of then the local big box retailer was going to give me on a Panny that was smaller and almost the same cost, luckily they did not have in stock and would have to give them a few days to order.

Pros: Nice picture adjustments. Great picture. Great looks. Great value!

Cons: Stand a little wobbly but what do you expect with a tv this size. I don't think it is so bad as to fail.

Not a home run, yet.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just had this delivered from Crutchfield a few minutes ago and I'm going to post my intial thoughts. Up front, I did not intent on buying a Samsung, I'm a Panasonic plasma guy. At original MSRP I might be upset with this plasma but at Crutchfield's sale price, it was tough to pass up, so I didn't. So far I've not heard any of the Samsung "buzz." I know that I will need to a set up disc to get the picture right (out of the box it's not what I know it can be). The stand is wobbly garbage - buy a good wall mount. The size of this thing is huge - be ready for it. lol! I'm hooking up my Oppo BD-P93 (Crutchfield - please sell this bluray/ dvd player) now to see what this thing can really do. ;-) It only gets 4 stars because I'm nit picking. No regrets on buying this TV.

Pros: Looks. price. set up.

Cons: stand is garbage. Going to take some effort to get the picture perfect. Speakers are so so at best.

Awesome TV!!!!

Matt B from Bridgewater VA on 5/31/2012

I bought this TV back in October of 2011 for around $2500. At its current price, it's a bargain. The picture quality is beyond reproach. I'm a videophile from way back so I love the smooth motion and warm colors provided by this plasma screen. Movies look excellent and 3D Bluray is pretty good too except for a little flicker which is only noticeable in certain scenes. Sell your season tickets because football is jaw-dropping on this set (especially on FOX). Great tv for video games. Even at 59", you can sit pretty close and things are still razor sharp. 3D adds a lot to video games. If you plan on gaming with this tv, get the glasses. The only negative things are the remote is junk and so are the built-in speakers. That doesn't cost it a star because a tv with picture this good deserves to be hooked up to a proper surround sound system and controlled by a universal remote. Good job Samsung! And thanks to Crutchfield for a great shopping experience.

Pros: Picture quality, screen size

Cons: Remote, speakers, some flicker in 3D

Dead on arrival

Mike C from Santa Monica, CA on 5/21/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

TV was dead on arrival. Samsung tech support tells me I can get a call back within 2 days, and from there it's anybody's guess Re: how long for a repair. Crutchfield reps are helpful, thankfully. Apparently I'll have a new one in a week or so. What's frustrating is that this thing is a huge hassle to re-package for the exchange shipment. I would have preferred some special assistance in such a situation - I would have liked to hear either Samsung or Crutchfield say "we'll have someone come out to help box it up, when we exchange". Oh well. I'm still swayed by all the positive reviews on this product, so with any luck at all, the replacement will be worth the trouble.

Great Shadow Detail

TedW from Boise, ID on 4/30/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

As a critical photographer, cinematographer & digital artist, image quality is everything. This picture delivers nice, rich color, deep blacks, dynamic range and detail in the shadow areas of the image. I like plasma over LCD because LCD sets seem to over-sharpen everything. One LCD I looked at even attempted to sharpen naturally occurring motion-blur, which just looked freaky. I like movies to have that cinematic film look---not like the director's efforts were shot on an HD camcorder, and that's how the unnaturally sharp LCD sets look to me. I have noticed, however, that on rare occasions the brightness will suddenly change slightly, but the picture quality is so awesome that that isn't a deal-breaker in the least. (But I did pull one star for that.) I'm totally happy with this set. Just WOW! And by the way, this is my first purchase ever from Crutchfield, and they rock---possibly the best online shopping experience I've ever had! (But I'm probably preaching to the choir here.)

Pros: Image Quality, Design

Cons: Occasional brightness shifts

Extremely Satisfied: Product & Customer Service

Doug from Raleigh, NC on 12/19/2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am thoroughly pleased with this unit and the 59" size is perfect. CJ helped me through the selection process within the Samsung line and I couldn't be happier; the picture quality is awesome with many user adjustments to "fine tune" for the room application. I am an action sports fan and the Plasma nails it--I was hesitant at first but can highly recommend if you are in to motion video. The "Smart Hub" works well and wireless connectivity was a snap. The 3D rendering works very well and is a "nice to have" feature. Speakers are surprisingly good for the base flat panel unit and do well on their own; I kicked it up a notch with a Bose surround system for the extra punch. Icing on the cake was when I found the same package $195 cheaper on Crutchfield's site; they cheerfully refunded the difference under their 60 day price guarantee. You absolutely can't go wrong with Crutchfield which is why I have trusted them since 1983.

Pros: Packaging, Hardware quality, Picture quality, internet connectivity, 3-D capability, Crutchfield customer service.

Cons: For stand mounting, one must turn the unit on it's face (screen down) to mount the stand--make sure you have help. Unit tends to emit noticeable heat but manual declares this "normal".

Clifford from CA on 9/5/2011

After many hours of research and returning a SONY LED/LCD TVs (thanks to good return policies :) ) I purchased this TV. The picture is absolutely amazing and worth the purchase price. I don't know why LEDs are so popular. PLASMA is the way to go, period. The richness in colors, the black levels, let me say the black levels again. WOW!! LED night scenes in movies have grey skies. I don't know about you, but I don't spend this amount of money on tvs too often and when I do I expect quality. I didn't get it from a SONY LED and from what I'm told.......they're all like's from the LED panel in the back of the TV. Plasmas look great from all angles, no soap opera effects, This tv is simply the best I can imagine at this time. The richness in colors watching blue ray movies is blowing me away and watching the Yankees win is always great! So why only 4 stars? The truth is I would rate this 5/5 but the tv ships without mounting screws in the back of the TV. There have been people that have told me most don't ship with screws but 2 of my other tvs had them. So I was upset. For a few pennies I think Samsung can include some screws. Just my thoughts. Other than that.........LOVE IT.

pretty satisfied

Derick H. from Pittsburgh, PA on 4/20/2011

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nice TV. Deep blacks, nice picture quality. 3D mode is fun to toy around with. 3D Starter kit is $500 in stores, so the fact that it is included with the TV is a definite plus. Anti-reflective coating on screen works well. Wife likes the "touch of color" bezel around the screen. Logitech doesn't have this model in their database as of yet so I had to use last year's model to get my Harmony One to work properly (I'm only missing one or two functions and I could add them later so no big deal). This TV would satisfy most plasma consumers.

Plasma +1 Design: With Samsung's Plasma+1" Design, you'll benefit from an extra inch in screen size (59" vs. 58") because of the thinner bezel. A thick bezel can be distracting and affect your viewing experience. The Plasma+1 Design brings back the joy of watching television and provides you with a larger screen so your home entertainment experience is the best it can be.

Real Black Filter Technology: Samsung's Real Black Filter technology reduces onscreen glare and allows you to enjoy deeper blacks and sharper images. The Real Black Filter not only creates rich deep blacks, but also also enhances all the other onscreen colors, as well. As a result, the Samsung Real Black Filter provides a stunning warm & realistic picture.

600Hz Subfield Full HD Motion: The television features 600Hz Subfield Full HD Motion technology with a fast 0.001ms response time that minimizes blurring of fast motion in sports programming and movie content. The 600Hz Subfield Motion technology makes action more life-like and natural looking. Action scenes and sporting events are crisp, clear and picture perfect. 600Hz Subfield Motion flashes a single image up to 600 times a second creating unprecedented picture quality. Contours are crisper and scrolling text sharper; no matter how fast images are moving. Fast action scenes are both clear with rich deep color detail. As a result, you get smooth, realistic playback of any content.

Crystal Full HD Engine: Samsung's Crystal Full HD Engine achieves incredible clarity by unifying all of the TV's advanced imaging technologies. It expands performance, enhances all aspects of the image and takes picture quality and integrity to new levels of excellence.

Cinema Smooth: Watch movies with sharp contrast, crisp picture quality and now with lower energy bills. Cinema Smooth technology automatically controls the letterbox lighting by turning off the lights at the top & bottom of the screen.

Wide Color Enhancer Plus: Samsung's Wide Color Enhancer Plus uses an advanced algorithm to drastically improve image quality - even displaying subtle tones and details that less advanced TVs cannot reproduce.

HDTV Tuner: The TV has built-in over-the-air HDTV (ATSC) and Digital Cable (QAM) tuners, so you don't need a separate set-top box to receive and decode over-the-air HDTV/SDTV or unencrypted Digital Cable signals.

1080p Resolution: The Plasma television displays all inputs at a resolution of 1080p (1920 x 1080). The television's HDMI and component video inputs will accept 1080p (24/60Hz), 1080i, 720p, 480p and 480i video signals.

Video Inputs: The Samsung Plasma TV features HDMI, Component, and Composite video inputs.

  • HDMI (ver.1.4): The Samsung Plasma TV features four 1080p (24/60Hz) HDMI 1.4 inputs. The HDMI 1 input can also be used to connect a device with a DVI output (a DVI-to-HDMI adapter cable is necessary). If a DVI-equipped device is used, a separate audio cable will also be needed from the device to the "PC/DVI Audio In" 3.5mm stereo audio jack. In addition, any HDMI input can be used to connect a PC to this TV.
  • Component Video: The Samsung LED TV features two minijack audio/videos inputs and comes with a 6" component video/stereo RCA adapter (1080p). This component video input can also be used as a composite video input (480i only).

Anti Burn-In Technology: To reduce the possibility of screen burn-in, this Plasma TV is equipped with screen burn-in prevention technology. Samsung's Anti-burn-in technology uses auto pixel shift and signal pattern processing functions to ensure that no images are burned into the plasma panel. The Time setting allows you to program the time between movement of the picture in minutes.

  • Pixel Shift: This function shifts the pixels of the displayed image every 1-4 minutes to prevent burn-in.
  • Scrolling: This function removes after-images on the screen by moving all the pixels on the PDP according to a pattern.
  • Side Gray (Dark/Light): When you watch TV with the screen ratio of 4:3, the screen is prevented from any damage by adjusting the white balance on both the extreme left and right sides of the television.
  • Auto Protection Time: If the screen remains idle with a still image for a certain period of time (10, 20, 40, 60 minutes) defined by the user, the  TV's built-in screen saver is activated to prevent the formation of host images on the screen.

Full HD 3D (via HDMI 1.4): The Samsung Plasma TV offers Full HD (1080p) 3D capability. Samsung 3D TV utilizes Bluetooth-enabled active shutter glasses (SSG-3100/3300/3700, sold separately) for a full 1080p 3D viewing experience - when coupled with a 3D source, such as a 3D-ready Blu-ray player or an HD 3D broadcast from satellite or cable providers (connected via HDMI 1.4). The Samsung Plasma TV automatically adjusts the overall picture to provide an optimal 3D effect. The Samsung 3D TV also offers a unique feature that allows you to intensify your 2D viewing experience by up-converting it to virtual 3D. In addition, you can adjust the overall 3D perspective (+/-5) and overall 3D image depth (1-10). Samsung 3D TV supports Full HD 3D for 1920 x 2205p (24Hz) or 1280 x 1470p (60Hz) video signals; and virtual 3D for 1920 x 1080p (24/30/60Hz),  1920 x 1080i (60Hz), or 1280 x 720p (60hz) video signals. The Samsung Plasma TV offers various 3D modes to match your 3D viewing needs.

  • 2D-3D: Changes a 2D image to 3D; you can adjust the focus and depth of the image to maximize 3D experience.
  • Side-by-Side: Displays two images next to each other. Available when the resolution is 720p, 1080i or 1080p.
