Our take on the Samsung UN60F7100

Samsung's four-legged "Quad" stand has become something of a classic since it was introduced a few years ago. And the screen's ultra-slim bezel creates a virtually edgeless look that makes the picture seem even larger. It definitely gets your attention, but what's going on inside this TV is even more interesting.

Beautiful design, brilliant picture

Samsung's four-legged "Quad" stand has become something of a classic since it was introduced a few years ago. And the screen's ultra-slim bezel creates a virtually edgeless look that makes the picture seem even larger. It definitely gets your attention, but what's going on inside this TV is even more interesting.

A gem of a screen

The UN60F7100 is a 3D TV, and it comes with four pairs of glasses, but its appeal isn't limited to 3D fans. Why? Because displaying 3D accurately requires a top-notch screen. So, even if you don't care about 3D, that capability comes with a bonus: the sharpest, clearest 2D picture you've ever seen.

This model's LED backlight employs Samsung's Micro Dimming technology to produce a more accurate picture. The TV divides the image into multiple areas and applies the correct contrast levels to each area. The edge-mounted LEDs can actually dim independently based on the content in each scene. This is also a high-speed scanning backlight, which works hand-in-hand with the 240Hz screen refresh rate to take motion blur out of the picture.

This Smart TV will make you feel smart, too

The UN60F7100 makes finding great things to watch easier. Samsung's innovative Smart Hub organizes your favorite entertainment into five simple panels: On-TV, Movies and Shows, Social, Apps, and a panel for your personal photos, videos and music. You can actually ask the TV for recommendations while you're watching, like "what football games are on?" You speak into the microphone built into the touchpad remote, which feels more natural than talking to the TV screen. Plus, if you own a compatible Samsung smartphone or tablet, you can share pictures and videos stored on them and view them on this TV.

New for 2013 is a cool feature called TV View. It lets you mirror whatever's on the UN60F7100's screen on your Samsung Galaxy S3 smartphone or Galaxy tablet. If you need to leave the room — like, maybe to fix a sandwich — you won't have to leave your entertainment behind. It's like whole-house television you can hold in your hand.

Great TV, picture is very clear

Pros: Affordable, good picture, energy saving

Cons: Takes a long time to get picture settings to a point where it looks good. Look online for premaid picture programming settings. Crutchfield says they have free 3 day shipping to CA but it took 2 weeks.

Crutchfield response on 5/12/2014 Please see the details of our shipping policies. The 3-day delivery time applies to standard shipping (smaller items). Large or heavy items that require special shipping (including most TVs) are usually delivered within five business days.

Very cool picture!!! Still learning all the tools and tricks. Having trouble linking everything to one remote, requires more time.

Pros: Great picture right out of the box, 3D is way cool even when your not using the glasses. Tech Guys and Gals are great help, all the time.

Cons: Linking remotes to one troublesome, still not there yet.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall, great product.

Pros: Great picture, excellent simulated 3D, very nice form factor. Standard resolution DVD's look almost as good as Blueray. Much better than my previous HD TV

Cons: Smart TV wants to be center of universe while I want it to just be a great monitor in a receiver centric home theater. Smart TV features just get in the way of a easy to use experience.

Ordered from Crutchfield after seeing this set at another store. Delivery was quick and the initial set-up was easy. We have been watching now for about a month and continue to be amazed by the picture. Great buy!

Pros: - Picture quality - Ease of use

This TV was everything I hoped it would be. God for the living room and a good view even at an angle. Much better than my old projetction TV. The only drawback is the stupid remote control. Fortunately I use the Direct TV remote anyway.

Pros: Great Picture even with fast motion

Cons: Remote control design. CAn we not have simple buttons that are easy to use even in the dark?

Good Buy

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For sports events e.g. BB, it's like being at courtside. This Samsung TV is a great product with an interface that is easier to navigate than earlier versions. Easy to set up and install. I will need to get external speakers as the sound from 10w speakers isn't enough for the den its in.

Pros: Don't forget to register with the manufacturer. I think Samsung will increase your warranty time.

Cons: none so far.

Samsung Warranty Service

Mark from Wilmington, DE on 1/2/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this wanting the 240hz refresh rate and didn't think I needed the smart hub (internet features). I really like the smart hub menu system where you can easily access apps or your own media on your home network. Great picture, really nice TV! It is located in a very sunny room-picture brightness works well. About a month after getting the TV it died-would not power on and the red LED indicator light flashed 5 times. Crutchfield got Samsung Service on the phone 12/26 and a service rep came to the house 1/2. It took him 15 minutes to replace the motherboard and the TV was as good as new. Really happy with the support from both Crutchfield and Samsung!

Pros: Great Picture especially sports in HD, Simple (and small) Remote, Smart Hub menus & ease of navigation. Pleased with refresh rate.

Cons: Sound could be little better so I'm running it through my home theater. Channel menu always starts at channel 1 instead of defaulting to the current channel. Haven't figured out how to use the remote to control my DVD player.

Superb TV for the price

ChrisM from Silver Spring, MD on 1/2/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I got this on cyber Monday, so saved an extra $300 off the already low price for a TV of this quality. Overall, the TV is easy to set up, easy to use, and generates a great picture right out of the box. I've really only tested verizon fios on it so far, but it preforms very well in all variety of programming from sports to movies. Also great hook up with a new Samsung soundbar. Super easy. Finally, this is a great looking TV. Samsung has beautiful design. The only downside is that I still get some pixelation and some fast moving scenes still have a little bit of jitter. THis is better than my older Sony XBR, but it is still there. The motion flow does not completely eliminate this issue.

Pros: Great price; easy to set up; looks great.

Cons: Still some issues with fast-moving scenes.

Out of the box it was good picture, not great. Calibration with the Disney WoW disc made a great difference. I would say though that the Micro-Dimming feature does seem to crush the blacks on dark scenes. The sound is OK but could be better. Looking for rear wireless speakers to use with this TV.

Pros: Good Image Allot of extra features for this TV. Remote works as advertised

Cons: Micro-Dimming Had to make adjustments to make a great picture. Speakers

Probably the best TV screen I've seen. I was blown away by the image displayed for Blue-ray movies. Exceptional! I am delighted with the set. I tested the 3-D feature and was pleased with the results, once I bothered to read the directions, sync the glasses and enable the 3-D feature on the remote! I'm not crazy about wearing the glasses to view 3-D but, I'm so impressed with the crispness of the image in 2-D mode, I probably won't bother to seek out 3-D movies. I really love the 240 fps frame rate. Absolutely no discernible blurring of fast action. I really love the set.. I've not tested a lot of the special features yet, just enjoying sitting back and watching cable TV/ DVDs and Blue-ray videos. Wonderful!

Pros: Fantastic picture quality. Bright display. I like the very thin frame around the edges that provides the maximum screen size for a given sized wall.

Cons: I can't think of any but, I've not tested most of the special features. The Crutchfield technicians Installed and set it up and we've just enjoyed it!

Awesome TV!

gapkids5 from Round Lake Beach, IL on 12/17/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Awesome picture! I have had this TV for about two weeks and am amazed at the picture. I did a lot of research on different brands of LED sets. Prior to purchasing the set, I went to other retailers to look at this TV and compare it to other brands. At first I was skeptical since at all three places the picture was pixelizing during sports games. After speaking with a sales person at one of them they assured me that once I have the set connected to my Directv, I would not see this happening. The pixeling was due to signal strength being spread around to other sets in the store. I also decided to go with Samsung over Sony since my experience with my last two Sony sets have been disappointments. So far I am happy with the purchase. I have not used the Smart feature Apps since there are so many to choose from. I would definitely recommend this TV.

Pros: HD picture clarity. TV screen is bright enough to over come a sunlight room.

Cons: Settings and remote is a bit confusing but I am sure over time will be second nature.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great product, with tons of features. Coming from Samsung plasma TV to LED, I think there are some differences in a good and bad way. Overall absolutely gorgeous TV.

Pros: Very sleek design, and very light as well. I love the remote, although it feels heavy and slippery.

Cons: I miss some of the buttons on the old Samsung remotes, on the new ones you have to go into a menu and sub menu to find them. But saves room on the remote.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

TV has a lot of bells & whistles, probably more than will use. Just set it up yesterday and so far, so good. Easy to wall mount, looks sleek.

Pros: Multi-functional, picture good so far and microdimming seems to work. Initial out of the box set up was easy. Connected to home wireless without a problem

Cons: None at this time

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was looking to replace my Samsung LN52A650 52 inch TV with a 60 inch TV. I was going to move my old Samsung to the basement and get a new TV for the family room. Because this room gets a lot of daylight in the summer I quickly ruled out plasma TVs. I wanted to spend between $1500 and $2000 so it came down to LG and Samsung. All I really wanted was a 60 inch Smart TV so I was leaning towards the Samsung UN60F6300. I really didn't see the need for 3D since DirectTV only has one 3D channel now that ESPN 3D has gone away. So I went to Best Buy to see for myself and discovered that the UN60F7100 really had a better picture. Not by much but you could tell since they were side beside .I didn't really want the 3D capability but all the mid level and higher TVs have them, so you are stuck paying for it. Have not used all the feature yet but the picture is great and setup was easy. I think 3D TV is a gimmick, I can not see wearing glasses all the time and I don't know if I could watch it for an extended period of time. It's kind of a neat party trick to show friends. As for the remote, I don't care for it and am still using my old Logitech universal remote. I find the scroll pad too hard to navigate. I will have to try more to play with it. Overall great TV and I am glad I splurged. Oh, initially paid $1900 for set but it just went on sale for $1600, so Crutchfield is crediting my charge card back $300.

Pros: + Setup + Smart TV interface + picture quality + price

Cons: - remote - 3D TV (gimmick)

Replaced a 4 year old Sony 52 with this Samsung 7100 60 inch. The picture is wonderful. We have a Polk home theater surround sound (purchased Crutchfield). It rattles the walls. Sooooooooo good, we would buy another one. Worked great out of the box. Had to tweak the color a little to our personal viewing desire.

Pros: Ease of use, clear, multiple capabilities, wife likes it,

Cons: none

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I chose this tv as a replacement to my 11 year old Sony 57" projection Tv. When I first removed it from the box, I was amazed at how thin it was compared to my old projection set. When I plugged it in "OMG", were my first words I was so impressed by the improved picture. I have been enjoying this Tv for the past six (6) weeks and have no regrets. The money was well spent. I would highly recommend Crutchfield for any and all of your electronic needs. Tech support and sales are first rate, very knowledgeable and easy to deal with.

Pros: Easy ethernet (wi-fi) connection, picture is beautiful, crisp and sharp.

Cons: None other than Web surfing would be much improved with a keyboard.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We chose this tv as an upgrade to our existing Sharp Aquos display. When we first took it out, we were amazed at how thin it was. About 75% thinner. Then we mounted it on the wall and plugged it in. "Wow", was the first word that why wife said. We were so impressed by the markedly improved picture. After setting up and calibrating, we tried out a 3d bluray and were blown away once again. There was definite depth and the picture was very fluid. We have been enjoying this tv for the past month and have no regrets. The money was well spent. Though I do agree that the picture is slightly better with the 8000 series, I still think a person will get more bang for their buck purchasing the Samsung 7100 series tv.

Pros: User friendly control. Wifi connectability. Clear picture. Awesome color, clarity, and for the first realistic shadows. Great contrast.

Cons: None that we've seen.

tsmith from Virginia on 6/10/2013

Stepping up from a lower product line CFL Samsung, this blows it out of the water. The panels in the 60 inch size are made by Sharp, which had me only slightly concerned. After a demo in store and a conversation with sales, we came to the conclusion that whatever Samsung does to these units makes all the difference - the total package (image) is much better than the comparable sharp models. I'm not a videophile by any stretch of the imagination, but the clarity, brightness etc are all way above a CFL model. I'm sure some will say this is too bright, but there are infinite setting changes and once I spent 30 minutes of quality time with it, the picture is right on par with what I would have expected to cost twice as much. I'm sold and its not going back.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I started out wanting a TV with good image quality, but got excited about the Smart features. Fewer remotes, better integration of features within TV set. In the end, I'm back to a separate internet streaming device and a universal remote, and the TV is back to a display-only device. Although it *can* control your receiver and set the remote to control the volume of your external speakers, it won't turn it on without a myriad of menus each time. And guess what I found out?!? The digital audio output from the TV is only 2-channel! Back to the separate internet box. Get this: you can adjust the volume for your receiver (from the TV remote) while in the Netflix app, but it refuses while using Hulu. Back to the separate internet box (and universal remote). The allshare software needed on your PC to share content from your computer looks like it has a virus and won't install. Other DLNA software appears to work but the TV won't play very many file formats. Back to the separate internet box. If Samsung offered a 240 Hz display without the Smart features, that would be a much better choice. At best, it's a pretty great display. But don't get fooled by the smart tv integration. I expected much better. Oh: as for image quality, it looks great, but there is this "cartoonish" look to the motion in some material that I just can't put my finger on. Someone else mentioned this about the UN60F7500 too, so here's another data point.

Pros: Good picture quality, love the thin bezel

Cons: Smart TV features a big disappointment

Great TV

Dbark from Wyoming on 5/22/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This TV is our second Samsung and we did lots of looking and research before this purchase. We still think that the Samsung picture is the best we looked at. We went with the. 60" and are glad we did, the pictUre is really clear and even the channels that are not HD. We tried a 55" Samsung and purchased it from a different retailer when our other one bit the dust and besides the non HD channels looking really fuzzy we would have the tv just go to a black screen with no audio and the only way you could get it to come back was to shut it off and turn it back on so we took it back. Our last Samsung was purchased from Crutchfield and so I went back to Crutchfield again and got the newer model and went to a 60". We are very pleased with our purchase and very pleased with Crutchfield. Dont mind the silver bezel and stand as it matches the stand we have it on so now I don't have to go buy another to match. Haven't had a chance to try the 3D yet so will do that soon and if that works well I will leave a five star on this review. I did purchase a two year warranty also just because the products nowadays seem to not last as long or have issues.

Pros: Great picture and easy to use

Cons: None

The quality of this television is amazing. Blacks are super deep. Very little glare on the screen. I'm not a fan of the silver bezel, but who cares as it's so small along the edges one hardly notices. This TV stupefies people when they see it.

Cons: Silver stand and bezel

LED Edge-Lighting w/ Micro Dimming: Samsung's LED Edge-Lighting technology w/ Micro Dimming shows greater detailed contrast across the screen with richer, brighter colors, whiter whites, and deeper blacks. The television's white LEDs are arranged along the left and right edges of the screen and a proprietary light guide is used to focus its luminance inwards towards the middle of the screen for a more uniform brightness. Micro Dimming uses a proprietary algorithm that adjusts brightness and contrast in select parts of the screen based on the image being displayed. This system provides provides a more natural color representation with ultra-sharp blacks, deeper reds & greens, and brighter whites.

Ultra Clear Panel: Sometimes you can't keep sunlight or house lights from shining right on your TV screen. With Samsung's Ultra Clear Panel, you can still get an amazing picture even with reflective light. Ultra Clear Panel absorbs most ambient light and virtually eliminates reflections. Ultra Clear Panel also helps make colors more vibrant with deeper blacks and enhanced contrast for crisper images and excellent shadow detail.

Clear Motion Rate 720: Clear Motion Rate (CMR) is Samsung's more comprehensive and accurate measure for how well the LED-LCD TV can display fast-moving images. Previously, motion clarity was expressed simply by the refresh rate, measured in Hz. CMR, however, takes into account all three factors that contribute to motion clarity: panel refresh rate, image processor speed and backlight technology. CMR is measured by determining the thinnest line a TV can display in a moving image. The thinner the line, the higher the CMR rating, and the clearer the picture you'll enjoy on the screen.

  • Panel Refresh Rate (Hz): Samsung's screen refresh rate (240Hz) significantly improves motion detail and resolution by sampling the image more frequently, leading to smoother, more fluid movement.
  • Image Processor (Auto Motion Plus): Samsung's proprietary Auto Motion Plus image processing technology is faster and more responsive than conventional image processors, as it interpolates intermediate frames to smooth out the image.
  • LED Backlight Technology: Samsung's Edge-Lighting Backlight technology regulates output precisely in synchronization with the screen refresh to lessen the time it is lit, reducing ghosting and motion blur.

Auto Motion Plus: Auto Motion Plus removes blur and judder from scenes with large amounts of rapid movement to provide a clearer picture. Auto Motion Plus reduces blur so that action movies, sports and video games have enhanced clarity. Advanced panels and unique backlight technology combine with proprietary algorithms to reduce the response time and yield a more accurate image reproduction with faster onscreen motion. Auto Motion Plus can be set to Clear, Standard, Smooth, Custom, or Off.

Wide Color Enhancer Plus: Wide Color Enhancer Plus allows you to see picture color the way the director originally intended. Witness the entire RGB spectrum brought to life on your screen to bring you exceptionally vibrant, yet natural-looking images faithful to the director's original intent.

Motion Lighting: The TV automatically adjusts the brightness of the screen in response to the brightness of the room. In bright light, the screen brightens. In dim light, the screen dims.

HDTV Tuner: The TV has built-in over-the-air HDTV (ATSC) and Digital Cable (QAM) tuners, so you don't need a separate set-top box to receive and decode over-the-air HDTV/SDTV or unencrypted Digital Cable signals.

1080p Resolution: The LED-LCD television displays all inputs at a resolution of 1080p (1920 x 1080). The television's HDMI and component video inputs will accept 1080p (24/60Hz), 1080i, 720p, 480p and 480i video signals.

  • HDMI (v.1.4): The Samsung LED-LCD TV features four HDMI 1.4 inputs to connect to your Blu-ray/DVD player, Satellite/Cable receiver, or AV receiver. In addition, any HDMI input can be used to connect a PC to this TV.

I have this set. It is glossy and it does reflect light from windows behind where we sit. We close the shutters on the windows during the day time. This set has unmatched beautiful and rich deep color picture quality. I have had mat finish screens without reflections that are only suitable for watching the news or the cartoon channel. [ Robert  Aug 11, 2015 ]
No Problems Day or Night best picture I've seen day or night. You'll love it. [ RONNIE  Nov 26, 2013 ]
No problem viewing day or night, we're viewing in a large great room that has all glass windows & doors facing lake. I think "Glossy" means when its off it looks "Glossy", Shiny. You will love this TV best picture I've viewed along with a lot of friends & neighbors. [ RONNIE  Nov 26, 2013 ]
I haven't experienced problems with watching it throughout the day. You will get some reflection depending on where your light source is coming from, but it wasn't distracting enough for me though. I guess it depends on personal preference. I am actually satisfied with the purchase and have found the picture quality and appearance in line with my expectations. [ Jeff  Nov 25, 2013 ]
Hi Keith- You asked a good question and, yes, the screen is glossy in finish. Most screens have a glossy finish these days whether they are LED/LCD or plasma. Haven't seen a matte finish since the days of rear projection units. Perhaps considering the brightness of the display (and the overall brightness of the room...) should be a consideration. We chose the UN60F7100 as it had a brighter display in our room with a sliding patio door and sidelights...and its a relatively dark room. We replaced a Samsung plasma unit which we really liked for this slightly larger one, which we are also very pleased with. Hope this helps, cheers! PS- in the summer months the occasional early day viewing was enhanced with the drapes closed..... Rob [ WALLACE A  Nov 25, 2013 ]
The picture is absolutely clear; crisp and sharp. No problems watching during the day. Great TV Vito [ VITO  Nov 25, 2013 ]
The picture is very vibrant; the colors are very hot and jump off the screen. It is is best picture I have ever had in any condition--day or night! [ ROBERT M  Nov 25, 2013 ]
We love this tv so far no problems. I would say the screen is kind of like glass As far as the glossy screen goes, we have no problem with glare yet we only have one window with a blind in it in the room we use it but the adjacent room is all windows and we don't notice a problem at all. Our last tv was really bad with glare during the day. Hope this helps. [ DENIECE  Nov 25, 2013 ]
Keith, it's not as bad as looking at glass during the the day and getting reflections but it does happen. Try to reduce as much direct sunlight to minimize reflections. [ BRADLEY  Nov 25, 2013 ]
It's just a great picture that I guess some might say glossy. I love the picture day or night. The only issue is during the day I can see my window in the reflection of the tv. My tv faces east and I have lots of windows on the north and the reflection comes from the east. I hope this helps. [ DaddyE  Nov 24, 2013 ]
The glass is pretty reflective. In the case of this installation there were no windows on the opposite wall so it was a non issue. 3 weeks prior I installed a 60" model of the same Panel, facing a full set of patio doors. Difficult to view during the day. If you have windows behind you, it will be an issue unless its tilted down. Youll have glare issues like this with most panels That said, this panel is AWESOME. Killer picture, great 3d. Client has ordered 2 more for different locations. [ BRIAN G  Nov 24, 2013 ]
Yes, the screen is glossy and doesn't do well in rooms with sunlight reflecting off the TV. I had a Sony before with a matte screen and I still miss the non-glare of that old TV. [ ROBERT  Nov 24, 2013 ]
Yes it is glossy. We live in the mountains where the view is important. Our scree faces north and a bank of windows ten feet high. I'm watching football all afternoon with no problem. If I really look for a reflection on the screen I can probably see it. But the colors are so vivid that my eyes adjust. It's really not a problem [ ROBERT  Nov 24, 2013 ]
It is definitely glossy. With any bright overhead lights or windows near, you'll see a glare. I've got mine in a media room with curtains. When I turn on overhead lights, it has a pretty annoying glare. Those glossy screens sure do help with the deep blacks. Especially with 3D movies. It's fantastic! [ PHILIP  Nov 24, 2013 ]
Thanks for your question Bill. The biggest differences are the Clear Motion Rate (480 vs. 720) and the Screen Refresh Rate (120 vs. 240). Feel free to reach out to an Advisor by phone or chat for more info on which TV may be best for you. [ Jeff  Nov 21, 2013 ]  Staff
