4K Ultra HD TV — 4 times the picture detail of 1080p

Samsung UN65U8550

Since its arrival Samsung's sleek 65" UN65HU8550 has been one of our top-selling Ultra HD TVs. It appeals to those who prefer a true flat screen to the curved-screen designs. Naturally, you get the super-sharp 3840 x 2160-pixel picture detail that makes 4K images look so stunning.

Ready for 4K content right now

Samsung made sure that this set's video processing and connections are as state-of-the-art as the screen. The UN65HU8550 is one of the first Ultra HD TVs to include “HEVC” decoding, which means it'll be able to display 4K Netflix® content with no additional gear needed. And this TV will be ready for what's coming further in the future, thanks to Samsung's Smart Evolution feature, which provides a goof-proof way to upgrade the TV's inputs, outputs, and processing brains. Think of it as an insurance policy that will keep UN65HU8550 owners up to date on Ultra HD format standards as they evolve.

True 4K content will continue to be scarce for a while, but that won't keep you from enjoying a remarkable picture. Samsung made 4K upconversion a top priority as they developed the video processing circuitry for the UN65HU8550. Their UHD Upscaling automatically upconverts any signal to match the screen's 4K resolution. All of your current video sources — Blu-ray player, cable or satellite TV box, game console — will look better than ever.

Smart TV times 4

Samsung UN55U8550 Quad Screen

The Quad Screen feature divides this TV into four screens. Watch a golf tournament on one screen while searching the web for current standings on another. Then watch a video tutorial to master your swing while navigating your Smart TV panel on the fourth screen.

Tablets and smartphones can run circles around many older Smart TVs, but they can't do all the tricks that the UN65HU8550 can. Samsung's speedy quad core processor supports a new Multi-Link feature, which lets you place live TV side-by-side with other apps, like YouTube™ or a web browser — you can browse the web without having to interrupt what you're watching.

Besides surfing the web you can do things like multitask or use one app while downloading another. Whether your connection is wired or wireless, you can do a quick web search while you watch movies and TV shows, and enjoy TV while you chat with friends and family online. Along with built-in apps for services like Netflix®, Hulu Plus™, and YouTube™, you can download new ones from Samsung's large selection of apps.

Samsung's Galaxy phones and tablets add handheld viewing and control

Samsung's AllShare™ Play lets you wirelessly access and stream content from any compatible device. If you have a Galaxy S3 smartphone or Galaxy tablet, you can share movies, photos, and music via the UN65HU8550. Your Wi-Fi® network lets you do things like "toss" photos from your phone or tablet to the screen with the swipe of a finger. Or push streaming video like Netflix movies from device to screen.

Sending content from your phone to your TV is cool, and going TV-to-phone is even cooler. Just download Samsung's Smart View app and use the TV View feature to mirror whatever's on the UN65HU8550's screen on your Galaxy S3 phone or tablet. You can leave the room anytime without leaving your entertainment behind. Think of it as a whole-house TV system you can hold in your hand.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Replaced a 10 yr old Sony tv and all I have to say is wow what an excellent tv. It was Easy to set up.

Pros: Everything has been pros so far.

Cons: The only con is price.

Great TV but could be greater.

Marianne from Florida on 12/25/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Crutchfield was a pleasure to deal with. We upgraded to this TV and their staff was very helpful even after 3 calls. While the color of the TV is outstanding, 4K at this time is moot. There is a pathetic selection of movies broadcasted in 4K. Hopefully, that will change with time and 4K won't be another gimmick like 3D. I have yet to be able make the wireless connection to my Mac without buying another device. Airplay should be a part of this TV. External speakers are highly recommended. We upgraded from a 55" Visio that died after 2 1/2 years of use. I hope the Samsung is more reliable.

Pros: Impressive color. No useless black border. Excellent picture without distortion from every angle.

Cons: Complicated WiFi connection. Complicated remote synch. Limited selection of 4K movies. Poor sound quality.

One fine TV

MikeF from Florida on 12/18/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have had this TV for about 6 weeks now and I can say it is the best TV I have ever seen. That includes the Pioneer,Samsung and Pansonic plasmas. I have watched several Blu-Rays, Blu-Ray 3-D, and Regular DVD's. I have not had the pleasure of watching any 4K content t but I am looking forward to it.

Pros: Very deep blacks. Spectacular color.

Cons: No cons except for lack of 4-K content. I am sure that is coming.

Awesome TV

Kurt from Bellevue, WA on 12/9/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

TV looks beautiful. Upgraded from an older HDTV and the picture is fantastic. The upscaling of the image brings new life and details to movies we've already been watching. Profile is very thin and the TV is super light.

Pros: Great picture

Cons: Screen is highly reflective. Can be bad if your room has a lot of lighting during the day, or your christmas tree lights are on.

Samsung BAD - Crutchfield Good

Robert from Kissimmee, Fl on 12/4/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Received the TV in a timely fashion. Hooked it up. I was losing sound then picture from the cable box. Called Samsung. The Tech gave me wrong information, said I needed an HDMI 2.0 cable. He said that was my problem. Then I spoke to the next level of tech support at Samsung. That Tech told me that the need for a HDMI 2.0 cable was not correct. TV is going back to Crutchfield. They were great about the whole thing. Trying to make up my mind whether I want the same replacement or just a refund.

Awesome--both Crutchfield and the TV

Wes S from North Carolina on 12/3/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We are renovating an old home, and I wanted a great home theater. I first called Crutchfield and my advisor took unlimited time to explain options and alternatives. I am familiar the technology, but not an expert by any means. My advisor was great; he never seemed hurried, never "talked down" to me, and answered all my questions, even beyond my high expectations. Crutchfield's online technology is phenomenal; when we talked about a product, he was able to point my browser to the right page and we were able to look at the same information while we talked on the phone. When I finally ordered, the products arrived in two business days in perfect condition. A perfect purchase experience. The 65" Samsung HU8550 is awesome!! I expected a great product, but it is even better than I had expected. The picture is world class. With broadcast quality network programming (that is not native 4K) the picture is still much better than HD. It really feels like watching live theater rather than film or videotape. With football games (also not native 4K) the picture is simply beyond belief. I cannot imagine what native 4K will be like. I could not be happier with the product or with the Crutchfield experience.

Pros: Crutchfield service, picture quality, product features.

Cons: Absolutely none.

Inconsistent Delivery dates

LV from NewJersey on 11/21/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am not rating the product. Product hopefully it should be good. But I am rating my shopping experience. Website showed this as available after researchign for sometime I placed the order. In the check out process it said backorder. Next day morning it showed as 11/23 shipment date, I called the customer service and he confirmed it will be shipped on 11/24 for sure. Third day it says review and processing. Now customer service person says TV out of stock expecting from Samsung but status is unknown. She also added that you can switch to different TV or cancel your order. It's almost like stock market, everyday changing. I am not expecting such a experience from Crutchfield. All I would say is, this is not how big company operates. Totally below expectation. Now I have to wait for the email to know when it will be delivered. I want to rate even less based on this order, but I couldn't because I still trust them to do what is the right thing to do.

Excellent choice

JohnP from Los Alamos, NM on 11/16/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have reviewed 3 types of movies so far. These are regular def DVD, high def Blue Ray, and high def Blue Ray 3-D. I have not reviewed UHD, as I have no sources. Regular def DVD is very high quality. I don't know whether the upconversion from my new Samsung Blue Ray player or the TV is responsible. Blue Ray is exceptional, and the 3-D is better than any theater I have been in. Picture quality and definition are so good, that you can sit much closer than recommended. Five feet is fine, even with regular DVDs. I use this as a monitor, so cannot objectively grade "features." This TV is far superior to the Sony UHD I had for a short time. Seriously consider buying a larger TV than the standard recommendations for size vs viewing distance. I may move this set to the MBR and upgrade to a 75 inch for my 7-8 ft viewing distance main theater.

Pros: Picture quality is exceptional. Light weight makes it easy to wall mount.

Cons: 4 of 8 batteries for the 3-D glasses were dead. They give you 8, so that is not much of a problem.

Plasma rules

legsaw from fort Madison ia on 11/4/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My review. Samsung HU8550 65 inch, denon x3000, Energy micro 5.1. A plasma is a far better tv. Maybe oled will equal. Please surpass! LCD is a failure/success of marketing. We get stuck with crap. At least as far as picture quality is concerned. At least I still have a Panasonic plasma. The only time I can call this TV beautiful is when the picture is bright. Anytime its in the dark, where suspense rules, it fails. Gave it energy micro speakers. Sound good, just don't drive them hard. Denon x3000 will blow them at 75%. Trust me, turn it up more, they will pop! My replacements failed at 65%. Really? Denon x30000 is supposed to be 105 watts. Speakers rated from100. Yet they blow at 65. So much left to go! Who's fault is this? I don't blame Crutchfield. Samsung your TV stinks. 4k means nothing next to a beautiful 1080p picture. Plasma rules. Embrace oled. Don't shove led crap on us until better wins!

Great TV for the money

RockDR from Pittsburgh PA on 11/2/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

TV Delivered ahead of time I expected. Easy to set up although the "Pod" is a little tricky if you use other remotes. I lost the settings after programing my "Harmony" remote. I still have to reprogram the pod again. TV picture is outstanding. I have yet to view a true 4K image but the HD pictures are much better than they were on my old Sony TV it replaced.

Pros: Easy to set up. Outstanding picture. Good application features

Cons: POD should have a "night light" feature. Although it has raised button symbols, the buttons are hard to see if the room is not lit brightly.

Simply Gorgeous! with a slight software kink

PC_NYC from NYC on 10/14/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A great 4K display. Good user interface and SMART features. The Smart remote is nice with interactive feature, on screen pointing and voice commands. However a rather well known Netflix app issue occured which rendered the Netflix service unusable due to the update glitch. (something to do with regional account access?). Very frustrating at first as many online suggestions did not fix the problem. But online chat with Samsung tech support quickly and easily solved the issues. (changing DNS entry and factory resetting). I just wished Samsung had come forward and contacted the users early rather than leaving a lot of people out there in the dark as to how to fix this Netflix access problem. Could have been a 5-star rating without this rather simple but annoying problem.

Samsung UN65HU8550

Vic B from Olney, MD on 9/10/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This TV has is exactly what I expected from Samsung, the quality of the picture is excellent and the features keep improving year after year. The remote control is much improved over last years model, it's actually usable! I decided to upgrade to the 4K even though there's not much content out there yet. I'm waiting for Samsung to send me the free 4K media pack that was offered with the purchase so I can see first hand the higher resolution. I haven't tried Netflix yet to try their 4K streaming but reviews from others sound promising. I understand that Samsung is working a deal with Amazon to offer 4K. In any case I'm prepared when 4K takes off! The TV stand is much improved and takes up less real-estate on a table top from other Samsung's I have with the 4 chrome legs, although this stand does't swivel. As other reviewers have mentioned the sound is pretty good without a sound bar but you'll want to eventually add a sound bar or other theater system. A word of caution regarding sound bars. If your going to use the ARC HDMI connections from a ARC sound bar to the TV be sure the sound bar supports 4K pass through or you won't be able to take advantage of 4K content when viewing.

Pros: Excellent picture, great smart features, much improved remote and as always Crutchfield staff and support is superb!

Cons: Reflective screen still a bit annoying but what can you do?

Great TV

djsilo from Manhasset, NY on 8/25/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall outstanding television. Online 4k content is outstanding, and I can't wait for the rest of the media world to catch up. The tv does an ok job of handling cable hd, and at times it appears pixelated. This tv is really a tv of the future, and far ahead of most viewable sources.

Pros: Great 4k display of 4k media. Outstanding smart features.

Cons: Doesn't handle cablevision hd very well, yes I've already done a myriad of rec adjustments.

Amazing TV

Selmir from Buford, GA on 8/24/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The TV is quite amazing, in many different ways. Normal programming looks very very good. The 4k content on Netflix looks stunning. TV has alot of features and it takes time to tweak things. The sound of the TV is actually very good considering the thinness, but I am running sound via Definitive Technology BP8060ST & Onkyo 727 receiver. At first the TV would have a judder/flicker effect and which dissipated through changing picture options. I did ALOT of research on this TV as I wanted the best picture quality and black levels possible without going to a full-array TV (which would not have been an option really given the large price increase). Overall, blacks are really really dark. My skepticism went away after several hours of watching TV and movies. Smart HUB is quick and the on screen remote allows you to zip through the menus/features. Web Browser is easy to use; content looks really crisp even while in Multi-Screen view. Setup on the TV was a breeze; finish on the TV and stand are really nice. I DEFINITELY recommend this TV to anyone who wants something nicer in their living room. It is quite a bit of money more than the non-4k TVs out there but after 2 weeks of owning the TV, I do not have any regrets for paying the premium price for the TV or selecting the HU8550 model. You live once so get what you really want, especially if you dont change TVs for 10+ years at a time like me. Played Gran Turismo 5 on 2D and 3D and picture quality was really good as well. Very happy!

Pros: Exterior styling, picture quality (esp. In 4k), good sound, very smooth operation of menus and features, black levels and brightness

Cons: None so far after 2 weeks. I dont foreser any dissappoinments

Samsung UN65HU8550 A Good Buy from Crutchfield

RobertD from Houston, TX on 7/15/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Watched the World Cup and it was a great experience. Crutchfield customer support is phenomenal and can't be beat. Two great products put together, great electronics and great Service, what else can a consumer want?

Pros: A TV that can easily last 5+ years, the last Samsung we had was at the 8 year mark when we decided it was technically obsolete, but it was still running strong. Easy to unpack and setup (2 person operation). Crutchfield service that never quits.

Cons: I am still looking for one.

Cons: So far none.

Improves Both Viewing and Operating Experience

Zzyzx Oh from Pennsylvania on 6/5/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Today we installeed the 65" Samsung flat screen with a SONOS PLAYBAR and a TiVo Premiere 4 Set Top Box. Everything went very smoothly, few issues and the results are very impressive. Whatever concerns people had about controlling the TiVo Premiere with the Samsung remote seem to be resolved. Although the Samsung standard remote is a bit busy with buttons, it does what you need it to do so you can put the poorly labeled TiVo Remote in the drawer forever. The SONOS PLAYBAR fires up nicely when the TV is on, and it allows you to join a SONOS SUB to the PLAYBAR to have some pretty nice sounds. Evn without the SONOS the TV sound is surprisingly good. I was listening to it when I thought I was listening to the PLAYBAR, and I was already impressed. Then I realized the PLAYBAR was very LOW in volume and I was hearing the TV, and I decided to use it that way for awhile until I had the tie to balance things better, but I don't intend to actually turn OFF the TV sound like most people do. It sounds that decent. The TV, the TiVo, the DVD the Ethenet Hub and the Entertainment Center lights are all running off a small UPS without making much of a demand. The old Toshiba 42" LCD would trigger a line voltage drop when I turned it on, sot his seems pretty efficient on the power surge. Basicly, this tv seems to have made our other large LCD's obsolete, so we're already planning the next replacement project.

Pros: Single remote supports TV, TiVo Premiere 4, and Samsung DVD. Picture quality is outstanding, stellar, pick your own term for outrageously good. Online firmware updates work flawlessly.

Cons: Daylight will relfect on the screen. Some TV MENU items gery out for unknown reasons (possibly the context of what it thinks I'm doing).

This purchase was the best I ever made, and it was the first one I made with Crutchfield. They were extremely helpful during my selections and post-sale. I will be purchasing from them again, just maybe not a TV since this thing will be glorious for many years to come!

Pros: Everything.

Cons: None so far.

Samsung UHD 65"

Campbell Webb from Wellesley, MA on 5/12/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very happy with my Samsung UHD. The quality of the up scaling is amazing and the price very reasonable. The Crutchfield was very knowledge and responded to my questions Ina very timely manner. My only criticism I'd the tv input source is continually displayed when changing amp input source, and no 4k content is shipped with the unit unlike other vendors. Otherwise this is a great product.

Pros: Upscaling, design, price, software updates over wifi.

Cons: No 4k content shipped with unit. TV input source banner (HDMI) each time amp source is switched between tivo, DVD, Apple TV.

Ultra-HD 4K Resolution w/ UHD Upscaling: The Samsung HU8550 series LED-LCD TV has a display resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 (4K) and will display all video at that resolution; regardless of input signal. The Ultra-HD TV even offers "HEVC" decoding, which means it'll be able to display 4K content from online movie & TV show providers (like Netflix). 4K provides 4x higher resolution than current 1080p high-definition TVs, ensuring a truly immersive experience for all your favorite movies and TV shows.  UHD Upscaling delivers the complete Ultra-HD picture experience with a proprietary process including signal analysis, noise reduction, UHD upscaling, and detail enhancement to seamlessly upconvert SD, HD, or full-HD content to Ultra-HD-level picture quality.

Note: You can upgrade this HU8550 series LED-LCD TV with Samsung's One Connect Box (sold separately) to unlock new features and services offered by Samsung Electronics. With the One Connect Box from Samsung, you can be update the TV with new software and technology that will adapt to future Ultra-HD standards and improve TV performance; faster speed, more content, more features. The One Connect Box simply plugs into the TV using a single proprietary cable.

LED Edge-Lighting w/ Local Dimming: Samsung's LED Edge-Lighting technology w/ UHD Dimming + Precision Black Local Dimming maximizes the contrast between lights and darks to create a picture that is as true-to-life as possible. The television's white LEDs are arranged along the left and right edges of the screen and a proprietary light guide is used to focus its luminance inwards towards the middle of the screen for a more uniform brightness.

  • UHD Dimming: UHD Micro Dimming precisely scans an incredible amount of zones across the entire image and adjusts brightness to deliver deeper darks and brighter whites. It virtually eliminates the "halo" effect and image distortion, so you'll enjoy a crystal clear picture
  • Precision Black Local Dimming: Experience sharper contrast with Precision Black Local Dimming. It dims LEDs behind the darkest area of the picture for greater contrast and darker blacks, while the brighter elements remain as bright as they should be.

Clear Motion Rate 1200: Clear Motion Rate (CMR) is Samsung's more comprehensive and accurate measure for how well the LED-LCD TV can display fast-moving images. Previously, motion clarity was expressed simply by the refresh rate, measured in Hz. CMR, however, takes into account all three factors that contribute to motion clarity: panel refresh rate, image processor speed and backlight technology. CMR is measured by determining the thinnest line a TV can display in a moving image. The thinner the line, the higher the CMR rating, and the clearer the picture you'll enjoy on the screen.

  • Panel Refresh Rate (Hz): Samsung's screen refresh rate (120Hz) significantly improves motion detail and resolution by sampling the image more frequently, leading to smoother, more fluid movement.
  • Image Processor (Auto Motion Plus): Samsung's proprietary Auto Motion Plus image processing technology is faster and more responsive than conventional image processors, as it interpolates intermediate frames to smooth out the image.
  • LED Backlight Technology: Samsung's Edge-Lighting Backlight technology regulates output precisely in synchronization with the screen refresh to lessen the time it is lit, reducing ghosting and motion blur.

Auto Motion Plus: Auto Motion Plus removes blur and judder from scenes with large amounts of rapid movement to provide a clearer picture. Auto Motion Plus  reduces blur so that action movies, sports and video games have enhanced clarity. Advanced panels and unique backlight technology combine with proprietary algorithms to reduce the response time and yield a more accurate image reproduction with faster onscreen motion. Auto Motion Plus can be set to Clear, Standard, Smooth, Custom, or Off.

Wide Color Enhancer Plus + Auto Depth Enhancer: With Wide Color Enhancer Plus, you'll witness a wider spectrum of colors on the TV screen, just like the director intended. You'll enjoy enriched colors while watching your favorite movies, and shows, even if it's older, non-HD content. Auto Depth Enhancer is innovative picture technology that analyzes regions of each image and automatically adjusts the contrast for a greater sense of depth. As a result, everything you watch has incredible detail and appears more natural.

Video Inputs: The Samsung Ultra-HD LED-LCD TV offers Ultra-HD, high-definition, and standard definition video inputs.

  • HDTV Tuner w/ RF Coaxial Input: The TV feature a single RF-type coaxial input for connecting an external indoor/outdoor antenna. To be honest I did not see that option. The only one I saw was pip feature and also the split screen. which the hub was one one side and the video source was in the other.[ Robert F.  Jul 27, 2014 ]
Samsung User Manual, Page 8, "One Connect is sold separately. Purchasing One Connect will allow you to upgrade the software to the version from the year in which your One Connect was released. Not supported on all models."[ Zzyzx Oh  Jun 05, 2014 ]
no.[ LUKE G  Jun 03, 2014 ]
No it does not. But once the new one is released sometime June/July of this year, you'll be able to plug the box into this TV. Just to clarify this is a separate purchase from the TV at a later time. I hope this is helpful.[ Matthew  Jun 01, 2014 ]
No, from what I understand it's because this is a 2014 TV and it has all the updates and hardware that the one connect box has. The current one connect box brings the 2013 TV's to the 2014 specs, like the new interface and hdmi 2.0.[ JAMES  May 31, 2014 ]
No,one connect box is not included in this tv.[ Miguel  May 31, 2014 ]
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: 4K TV screen is 3840 pixels across by 2160 down for a total of 8,294,400 total pixels - 4 times the resolution of 1080p. I guess this would be better asked, "how far to the side can I be to view clearly"? However, to attempt an answer for you, I can view mine pretty clearly from about the 4 or 8 o'clock position if you were viewing from the side and the TV being 12 o'clock. Mostly watch from 12 to 1 o'clock position without a problem.[ Glenn  Nov 15, 2015 ]
