Our take on the Samsung UN65HU9000

If you've been to your local multiplex recently, you probably saw a movie in 4K on a curved screen. Now Samsung lets you experience that amazing picture depth and detail right in your living room.

Curved screen + 4K picture detail = more cinema-like TV

Samsung UN65U9000

If you've been to your local multiplex recently, you probably saw a movie in 4K on a curved screen. Now Samsung lets you experience that amazing picture depth and detail right in your living room.

In addition to its super-sharp 3840 x 2160-pixel picture detail, the UN65HU9000's screen is gently curved to provide a slight wraparound effect. The curved surface reduces reflections from ambient lighting on the sides, which is always a good thing.

Together, these features create the ultimate immersive viewing experience, enveloping you in spectacular color, clarity and detail. And unlike last year's curved designs, the UN65HU9000 can be wall-mounted.

Ready for 4K content right now

Samsung made sure that this set's video processing and connections are as state-of-the-art as the screen. The UN65HU9000 is one of the first Ultra HD TVs to include “HEVC” decoding, which means it'll be able to display 4K Netflix® content with no additional gear needed. And this TV will be ready for what's coming further in the future, thanks to Samsung's One Connect Box, which houses the inputs and outputs and most of the TV's processing brains. Simply replacing this box will keep UN65HU9000 owners up to date on Ultra HD format standards as they evolve.

True 4K content will continue to be scarce for a while, but that won't keep you from enjoying a remarkable picture. Samsung made 4K upconversion a top priority as they developed the video processing circuitry for the UN65HU9000. Their UHD Upscaling automatically upconverts any signal to match the screen's 4K resolution. All of your current video sources — Blu-ray player, cable or satellite TV box, game console — will look better than ever.

One smart solution for easy hookup and upgradability

Samsung UN55U9000

The UN65HU9000 includes Samsung's One Connect Box, which has inputs for your video components. A single cable connects the box to the TV, for a clean, uncluttered look.

Instead of connecting your Blu-ray player, cable box, and other sources to the TV itself, you connect them to Samsung's One Connect switching hub, which comes in the box with the UN65HU9000. It has four HDMI inputs, two USB ports, an Ethernet port, and an antenna jack. A single cable connects this box to the TV, for a clean, uncluttered look.

Samsung has a clever way to keep their most advanced TVs on the cutting edge. It's called Smart Evolution, and it lets you upgrade the TV's "brain" — its main processor, graphics processor, and memory — to support future formats and features as they become available. It's especially important for a 4K TV, because as new 4K standards emerge, this Smart Evolution design will allow you to replace the One Connect box for an easy upgrade.

Smart TV times 4

Quad Screen feature

The Quad Screen feature divides this TV into four screens. Watch a golf tournament on one screen while searching the web for current standings on another. Then watch a video tutorial to master your swing while navigating your Smart TV panel on the fourth screen.

Tablets and smartphones can run circles around many older Smart TVs, but they can't do all the tricks that the UN65HU9000 can. Samsung's super-speedy Quad-Core Plus processor supports a new Multi-Link feature, which lets you place live TV side-by-side with other apps, like YouTube™ or a web browser — you can browse the web without having to interrupt what you're watching.

Besides surfing the web you can do things like multitask or use one app while downloading another. Whether your connection is wired or wireless, you can do a quick web search while you watch movies and TV shows, and enjoy TV while you chat with friends and family online. Along with built-in apps for services like Netflix®, Hulu®, and YouTube™, you can download new ones from Samsung's large selection of apps.

Samsung's Galaxy phones and tablets add handheld viewing and control

Samsung's AllShare™ Play lets you wirelessly access and stream content from any compatible device. If you have a Galaxy S3 smartphone or Galaxy tablet, you can share movies, photos, and music via the UN65HU9000. Your Wi-Fi® network lets you do things like "toss" photos from your phone or tablet to the screen with the swipe of a finger. Or push streaming video like Netflix movies from device to screen.

Sending content from your phone to your TV is cool, and going TV-to-phone is even cooler. Just download Samsung's Smart View app and use the TV View feature to mirror whatever's on the UN65HU9000's screen on your Galaxy S3 phone or tablet. You can leave the room anytime without leaving your entertainment behind. Think of it as a whole-house TV system you can hold in your hand.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Amazing picture quality right out of the box. Everything looks better! I haven't had time to play with all the features, but I'm sure they will also blow my mind. The screen mirroring is very impressive. The quad screen is a very cool feature. The smart touch remote is fun to play with. I had a flat screen 55" Samsung that this TV replaced, it changed the whole dynamic of the room.

Pros: Everything looks better! I am very happy I decided to purchase this TV.

Cons: Not enough time to watch everything seems like a common complaint. I agree. May the Fourth be with you. :)

Best value for the money

J from Illinois on 5/4/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Picture quality is amazing! Watching sports channels or action movies this is the best.

Pros: Easy set up, high quality

Cons: Price if you don't use the camera the TV prompts you each time time the TV is turned "on". Lots of functions for a basic guy wanting a great picture.

Refresh rate

Sal M from Seattle, wa on 4/9/2015

This tv has low refresh rate of 120 hz. Why would anyone pay this much and settle for 120 hz.

Pros: Contrast, color and black levels are amazing. Apps are adequate with a quad core processor.

Cons: Poor regresh rates. Sports and high speed action scenes are not that great with motion lags.

Better Than Live

Arnej from New York on 2/13/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The picture quality is the best I have ever seen, better than live. The crispness and clarity is the same whether the picture comes from an antenna or via the internet. The only degradation occurred with my Tivo (connected to cable) until I changed the video feed to 1080p from the default 1080i. Even though the curve is subtle, after a few minutes the picture draws you in, and everything else looks so flat! The One Connect box makes it very easy to attach devices without having to move the TV, which is quite heavy.

Pros: Picture quality is just outstanding, such an improvement over my older Sony HD. The small remote is handy and works well. The pointer is convenient for entering user IDs and passwords quickly, although some of the apps don't seem to support this. There is a learning curve to know when to use the 'source' and when to use the 'smart hub' buttons. The sound quality is surprisingly good for regular TV programming, but you really need more fidelity for movies.

Cons: The browser is a proprietary Samsung browser - some websites do not accept my sign-on password with this browser. There is no HDMI out port, but I'm able to use the HDMI In ARC port to send audio to the sound bar.

best TV I've ever had

zup from murrieta on 1/28/2015

This TV has the most unbelievable picture of any TV I've ever seen in my life. The sound is great the smart features are incredible it updates itself and any issues can be resolved with Samsung taking control of your TV remotely. I can even control the television with my voice or hand gestures or the Smart Remote truly amazing.

Pros: 3d picture jumps out of the screen at you. 4k streaming with Netflix is breathtaking. A set of Seinheiser headphones help to make the sound great.

Cons: I installed an articulating wall mount it's a little scary to see something so large hanging off the wall like that.

Glare makes it unwatchable

Dave from California on 12/17/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I had been waiting to purchase this TV for several months in hopes it would come down in price on Black Friday. I went to a local big box store to see it in person and read several "professionals" reviews. It had 5 stars on Crutchfield's site at the time of purchase. Most retailers had the 9000 model for the same price, including Samsung. I ordered it from Crutchfield because of the lifetime tech support. I had bad experiences in the past with Samsung support.I was anxious to get the TV to surprise the family for Christmas. While I was waiting I ordered high-quality HDMI cables and the Sanus VLF525-b1 wall mount (great wall mount). Crutchfield got the TV out quick. I was anxious to get it mounted and start watching. When I put it on the mount I noticed the TV picking up light reflection from flood lights located from the ceiling above. I started to get a bad feeling. Got everything setup and turned it on. My bad feelings were confirmed. The glare is terrible (I can't emphasize this enough). It picked up lights that were located 30 feet away from the TV. It was worse when we turned on our canned lights in our family room. With the lights off the picture is amazing. I was concerned how it would be in the morning when the sunlight was out. With the blinds open it is flat out unwatchable. Closed the blinds and all you could see is the reflection of the blinds. After discovering this I searched online for glare with the 9000 series and saw a lot of other people with the same issue. TV is going back.

Pros: Great picture in complete darkness.

Cons: Can not watch because of the glare. Unless you live in a cave or have complete darkness in the room it's located in you will not be able to watch this. I suspect that the ratings on this thing will go below 3 stars once more people start to buy it. I am hoping that the flat model will work better since I haven't seen any complaints about glare in that model.

Excellent TV and Service

Pros: Easy set-up, great realistic colors, curved screen does immerse you into the picture

Cons: None

Simply Amazing

Nick from Las Vegas, NV on 10/2/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I purchased the 65" UH9000 to replace a 52" Mitsubishi DLP. I was extremely skeptical of the curved screen idea, but after viewing this TV in store, I was sold! Some reviewers complain about a large glare on the curved surface, which I can admit is definitely a potential depending on where lights/windows are in your room. I have both ceiling fan lights, and table lamps in the corners of my room, none of which catch a glare on this screen from our viewing angles. The setup of this TV was extremely easy. I was able to set it up by myself in about 30 minutes, from un-boxing to turning it on. I have a PS3, XBOX 360, Apple TV and DISH Network Hopper box connected to this TV. I enabled the HDMI UHD Color option (on the TV) for my PS3 HDMI input to maximize bluray video potential. Watching bluray movies is a whole new experience, the up scaling is superb. There is no YouTube app on this TV, I read other reviews that the app used to be installed. I tried to view 4k videos from the web browser on the TV, but it was extremely buggy and didn't work properly. As an alternative, you can download the videos to a hard drive and play them through a USB drive, or I've found that you can "airplay" youtube videos using your apple iphone / ipad. The airplay option from my ipad and iphone seamlessly streamed full resolution (4k) video to my TV. You can also watch 4k video from the netflix app on this TV.

Pros: Easy Setup One Connect Box means only two cables go to the TV Many settings available to fine tune your picture / viewing experience Smart Touch remote is very accurate for navigating through menus Stream YouTube videos from apple devices (can play 4k resolution) Game Mode setting limits lag time, w/no noticeable decrease in picture quality Watching 4k video is absolutely stunning Viewing hi resolution photos is also amazing. This TV truly enhances clarity, color and brightness of them.

Cons: Not enough 4k content available yet!

Never had a TV like this

Paul from Los Angeles on 9/19/2014

Before this TV... first I had a LG 720 res television. After that I bought an LG Smart TV with a 1080P res. Now that was amazing. And it was 3D as well. The screen size was 42" but it was good enough. And I could jack all my devices in. But during cleaning (the TV hang on the wall) the TV fell down on the floor. Put it on the standard and turned it on. Yes it worked again, but now with a large amount of death pixels. I took that opportunity to buy a new one. So naturally I did some research and investigation. That how I got to meet the Samsung UN65HU9000. Read some forums and reviews and got sold. I ordered one and when it was delivered, I could't imagine what box I saw. Big! Took a day off my work and ripped the box open and put it on my televisioin table. Because I am certainly not going to put it on my wall again. Put the cables in and got the remote. I couldn't believe the picture and how fast you can go through the Smart Hub. The big screen is truly amazing and with the tight bezel it is like watching when you are in the cinema.

Pros: Still have to figure out all of it

65" 4K Curved Samsung TV

JGB from Farmington, Utah on 9/15/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Amazing T.V. Excellent service from Crutchfield and quick delivery.

Pros: Best picture ever! Can't wait for full broadcast of 4K. Don't let anyone tell you the curved screen is not worth the money. It enables you to be in the scene not an observer. Sound from speakers is very good for someone with hearing disability.

Cons: Smart TV requires some necessary but interesting learning.

John F from Lititz PA on 8/26/2014

An absolutely amazing television! It does an incredible job of up scaling too!

Pros: Very easy to set up! I love the one connect box. Crutchfield was amazing as always! Super helpful and friendly!

Cons: Finding time to re watch all my favorite movies!

Great picture with near 4k quality on cable! Blue Ray is amazing.

A. Kashyap from Plano TX on 5/26/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is the best 4k tv at the moment. I have had it for a couple of weeks and wanted to post my experience. 4K upconversion from fios (1080i) looks amazing. It has details that I never saw before. I must say it took a lot of tweaks to get the best out of it. Bluray upconversion is very close to 4k. Here is the setting I use. Picture Mode: Movie Backlight: 10-14 (you can use 10 in the evening and 14 in the day or use Eco mode to configure it to change automatically) Contrast: 90 Brightness: 45 (do not change. If picture is too dark, disable Dynamic Contrast) Sharpness: 40 (some recommend 0 or 20. I see sharper images with 40 on tv feed) Hue: 45G/55R Dynamic contrast: Low/Medium (you can also use "Off" if contast is too high) White balance: customize so white look really white like ipad. There is a review on flatpanelhd that have used 2 point white balance. Increase Blue and reduce Green) Auto Motion: Clear Smart led: High (change from default of "Medium" which I believe activates hardware based local dimming) Gamma: 0 (do not change. If pictures appears too dark change backlight and disable dynamic contrast) [Others]: use default These are all the changes I did and picture is spectacular. The default setting out of the box is very poor (very high contrast).

Pros: Black level is comparable to Kuro (the best so far for an LED TV).

Cons: Two major drawbacks are (1) Viewing angle limited to 25 degree despite being a curve tv (2) 3d is active variety which flickers and not watchable in bright rooms.

Ultra-HD 4K Resolution w/ UHD Upscaling: The Samsung HU9000 series LED-LCD TV has a display resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 (4K) and will display all video at that resolution; regardless of input signal. The Ultra-HD TV even offers "HEVC" decoding, which means it'll be able to display 4K content from online movie & TV show providers (like Netflix). 4K provides 4x higher resolution than current 1080p high-definition TVs, ensuring a truly immersive experience for all your favorite movies and TV shows. UHD Upscaling delivers the complete Ultra-HD picture experience with a proprietary process including signal analysis, noise reduction, UHD upscaling, and detail enhancement to seamlessly upconvert SD, HD, or full-HD content to Ultra-HD-level picture quality.

Ultra-Clear Panel w/ Curved Screen: The Samsung Ultra Clear Panel absorbs ambient light, reduces reflections and lets the picture come to life. It displays deeper blacks and enhanced contrast for crystal clarity and reduces glare, so you can see clearly and enjoy more detail. Samsung's curved screen is supported with proprietary technology that creates an accurate picture with exceptional color, without any picture distortion. It has a dramatically improved field of view that creates a panoramic effect and helps the picture feel bigger.

LED Edge-Lighting w/ Local Dimming: Samsung's LED Edge-Lighting technology w/ UHD Dimming + Precision Black Local Dimming maximizes the contrast between lights and darks to create a picture that is as true-to-life as possible. The television's white LEDs are arranged along the left and right edges of the screen and a proprietary light guide is used to focus its luminance inwards towards the middle of the screen for a more uniform brightness.

  • UHD Dimming: UHD Micro Dimming precisely scans an incredible amount of zones across the entire image and adjusts brightness to deliver deeper darks and brighter whites. It virtually eliminates the "halo" effect and image distortion, so you'll enjoy a crystal clear picture
  • Precision Black Local Dimming: Experience sharper contrast with Precision Black Local Dimming. It dims LEDs behind the darkest area of the picture for greater contrast and darker blacks, while the brighter elements remain as bright as they should be.

Clear Motion Rate 1440: Clear Motion Rate (CMR) is Samsung's more comprehensive and accurate measure for how well the LED-LCD TV can display fast-moving images. Previously, motion clarity was expressed simply by the refresh rate, measured in Hz. CMR, however, takes into account all three factors that contribute to motion clarity: panel refresh rate, image processor speed and backlight technology. CMR is measured by determining the thinnest line a TV can display in a moving image. The thinner the line, the higher the CMR rating, and the clearer the picture you'll enjoy on the screen.

  • Panel Refresh Rate (Hz): Samsung's screen refresh rate (120Hz) significantly improves motion detail and resolution by sampling the image more frequently, leading to smoother, more fluid movement.
  • Image Processor (Auto Motion Plus): Samsung's proprietary Auto Motion Plus image processing technology is faster and more responsive than conventional image processors, as it interpolates intermediate frames to smooth out the image.
  • LED Backlight Technology: Samsung's Edge-Lighting Backlight technology regulates output precisely in synchronization with the screen refresh to lessen the time it is lit, reducing ghosting and motion blur.

Wide Color Enhancer Plus + PurColor: With Wide Color Enhancer Plus, you'll witness a wider spectrum of colors on the TV screen, just like the director intended. You'll enjoy enriched colors while watching your favorite movies, and shows, even if it's older, non-HD content. PurColor allows the TV to express the most shades of color as nature intended for optimal picture performance. Most TV's focus on the adjustment points of primary colors Red, Green and Blue. PurColor focuses on primary and secondary colors Magenta, Cyan and Yellow.

Auto Motion Plus & Auto Depth Enhancer: Auto Motion Plus removes blur and judder from scenes with large amounts of rapid movement to provide a clearer picture. Auto Motion Plus  reduces blur so that action movies, sports and video games have enhanced clarity. Advanced panels and unique backlight technology combine with proprietary algorithms to reduce the response time and yield a more accurate image reproduction with faster onscreen motion. Auto Motion Plus can be set to Clear, Standard, Smooth, Custom, or Off. Auto Depth Enhancer is innovative picture technology that analyzes regions of each image and automatically adjusts the contrast for a greater sense of depth. As a result, everything you watch has incredible detail and appears more natural.

One Connect Box: The Samsung HU9000 series LED-LCD TV includes Samsung's One Connect Box which connects to the television via a single 10' proprietary cable. The One Connect Box is fitted with all of the TV's RF, video, audio, USB, LAN, and IR Out connectivity. The One Connect Box provides high definition and standard definition video inputs, as well as a built-in HDTV tuner. The box provides clean integration of all your external devices so there's less clutter. The One Connect Box measures 14.1875" (w) x 1.0625" (h) x 5.125" (d).

  • HDMI 2.0: The Samsung LED-LCD TV features four HDMI 2.0 inputs to connect to your Blu-ray/DVD player, Satellite/Cable receiver, or AV receiver. In addition, any HDMI input can be used to connect a PC to this TV. The television's HDMI inputs will accept 3,840 x 2,160 (24/60Hz), 1080p (24/60Hz), 1080i, 720p, 480p and 480i video signals.
    • HDCP 2.2: HDCP 2.2 is supported only by the TV's HDMI (MHL) input; HDCP is short for "High bandwidth Digital Content Protection" and is used for 4K video copyright protection for compatibility with 4K Blu-ray players and 4K Satellite/Cable providers.
    • 4:4:4 Color Subsampling: All four HDMI inputs will support up to 4:4:4 chroma subsampling for full color data rendering of 4K video; however the HDMI (MHL) input is limited to 30 fps in 4:4:4 mode. 4:2:2 (60/30fps) and 4:2:0 (60fps) is also supported by the TV. With 4:4:4 color, luminance (brightness) and chroma (color) are sampled at the same rate, resulting in an RGB color palette as big as the video sampling rate for a video image with more total colors, plus greater color accuracy and detail. You must enable 4:4:4 & 4:2:2 color subsampling by turning on the "UHD Color" setting within the TV's on-screen menu.
  • Component/Composite: The Samsung LED-LCD TV also features a proprietary component AV input and comes with a component AV adapter. The television's component video input will accept 1080p (24/60Hz), 1080i, 720p, 480p and 480i video signals. This component video input can also be used as a composite video input (480i only). In addition, there is a composite video input (480i only). This inputs consists of a 3.5mm AV input with a 3.5mm AV-to-composite video/stereo RCA adapter.
  • HDTV Tuner w/ RF Coaxial Input: The TV feature a single RF-type coaxial input for connecting an external indoor/outdoor antenna. The unit has built-in over-the-air HDTV (ATSC) tuner, so you don't need a separate set-top box to receive and decode over-the-air HDTV/SDTV or unencrypted Digital Cable signals (up to 1080i).
Note: The One Connect Box allows you to update your TV with the newest software and features. Not only does the One Connect Box update the TV with the newest software and features, it also makes the TV ready for any and all possible 4K formats.

HDMI (MHL) Port: The HDMI 4 port is designed for the connection of select mobile phones and other portable electronic devices using the new MHL (Mobile High-Definition Link) standard. Simply plug your MHL compatible smartphone into the TV's HDMI 4 (MHL) port using the HDMI cable that is included with your mobile phone. MHL allows you to display full 1080p video and still images on the Samsung TV from your mobile smartphone. The TV's IR remote can be used to control basic playback functions (such as Play/Pause, Stop Fast Forward/Rewind, and Menu navigation). Your MHL compliant device will also charge while connected to the TV's HDMI 4 port. To find MHL-certified devices, go to

Ultra-HD 3D (4 Pair of Glasses Included): With Ultra-HD 3D you get 4x the resolution of Full HD 1080p while watching 3D. Samsung The TV utilizes Bluetooth-enabled active shutter glasses for an ultra 4K 3D viewing experience when coupled with a 3D source, such as a 3D-ready Blu-ray player or an HD 3D broadcast from satellite or cable providers (connected via HDMI 2.0). The Samsung LED-LCD TV automatically adjusts the overall picture to provide an optimal 3D effect. The Samsung 3D TV also offers a unique feature that allows you to intensify your 2D viewing experience by up-converting it to virtual 3D. In addition, you can adjust the overall 3D perspective, 3D image depth, and 3D brightness.

Note: Samsung 3D TV supports Ultra-HD 3D for 3840 x 2160p (24/30Hz), 1920 x 1080p (24/60Hz), 1920 x 1080i (60Hz), and 1280 x 720 (60Hz) video signals.

could you give me more info please. I am not familiar with that term [ Raymond  Aug 05, 2015 ]

I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: There are a few mounts that can work with the most popular being the LL11-B1 stationary mount and the best rated being the Sanus LT-25 tilting mount. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. [ Krissy  Jun 02, 2014 ]  Staff
