Great Blu-Ray player

PB Kelly from Greensboro NC on 4/28/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This Samsung unit works perfectly with my 50" Samsung TV. This is my first experience with Wi-Fi technology and this unit made it so simple to set up. I had it up and running within minutes of unpacking the player. Very user friendly and small enough that it doesn't take up much space in my audio cabinet.I have have had great experiences with Samsung products and this can be added to that list.

Pros: Simple set up and operation. Great picture and audio.Great price too.

Cons: I can't think of anything that I can complain about.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit is smaller and lighter than I expected but the picture quality is excellent and the integration features with my new Samsung TV is a nice surprise. Set up was relatively painless. The additional features are nice but I find myself going back to Apple TV as an easier interface to work with for some items. Makes a fairly loud noise when operating.

Pros: Picture quality, integration with Samsung TV, additional features.

Cons: Lightness allows the unit to slide easily when pressing front panel controls. Makes a fair amount of noise when operating.

Sub-Par at Best

RP709 from Waynesboro, Pa. on 3/4/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First let me say that everything A/V I own is Samsung & most of it came from Crutchfield, so I feel like I know what to expect. I was wrong, first of all, the old school horrid green display! Its not retro, it is awful, I had no idea any brand still did this let alone Samsung. Moving on to the Smart Hub, which was great on my last 3D Blu-ray Samsung ( Just died-Would not read discs anymore.) , did not work right from the start. It tried to go through the automatic update process and kept getting stuck for some reason. In the end it did fully load in 5 separate parts, which I think doomed it from then on. Some of the apps would open and crash instantly, some went into a never ending 'loading' loop, and some just refused to do anything at all. Then there is the built in web browser, now I knew going in that it was a partial browser, no flash and things like that, but the entire interface is just awful. I was using a wireless keyboard with a built in track pad and things were difficult, it would be next to impossible to operate with the remote, that is if you can keep the browser open long enough to accomplish anything. It would seem to be going along fine, and then for no apparent reason, it also would crash with a "lack of memory or other unknown error" message. So after about 6 hours of crashes and restarts, I decided to return my first ever product to Crutchfield. They (Crutchfield) were just as accommodating as usual and I had my refund in a couple days. Skip this one!

Pros: Price & Size

Cons: Everything else! It is very possible that I received a defective unit, but I am not the type to purchase the same item again, so I would just say avoid this one. I will wait for the next Samsung 3D Crutchfield gets and try that one.

Works Well with Samsung Equipment

Edward from Ellicott City, MD on 3/3/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

It's easy to connect, and produces a great picture. I connected mine to a Samsung Home Theater receiver and a 60" Samsung Smart TV. All I have to do is turn on the Blu-Ray player, insert the disk and voila, there it is. I love being able to see and hear movies in DTS-HD. My wife and I are watching more movies and enjoying them more. I would recommend this to anyone with Samsung equipment.

Pros: Easy to set up Great sound and vision Not too expensive

Cons: Wish it had more HDMI and digital connections

Buy at your own risk

Dia from Shreveport, LA. on 3/2/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This player has a great picture. Especially when paired with my Samsung 6500 TV using Anynet. The 3D comes through very nicely. The remote design I would give an average score of about 7. A few things could have been positioned better. When it works it looks great. Which brings me to the bad. About four months after purchasing it starts making very loud grinding noises. And I mean loud enough to be heard over a 7.1 system at volume. Then discs start getting pixellated and freezing a few weeks later. Sometimes it would freeze the entire unit where neither the power button on the panel or the remote would shut it off. I had to unplug it. That happened a few times. At first I thought it was bad discs. Maybe they were scratched or something. But they all played fine in my Pioneer and LG players (other rooms). Also, when I put them back in the Samsung it never messed up in the same place. So it wasn't the discs. About six months in I finally call to have it repaired. The Samsung Customer Support was atrocious. I had to call three times just to get them to send my RMA. First guy said he would send it and never did. Second guy hung up on me. Third guy finally did when I said send it while I'm on the phone to make sure I get it. Very rude people on the phone as well. Repair said nothing was wrong with it and sent the same unit back to me. First disc I put in froze after 30 mins. Absolutely worthless support. Assume you have no warranty because you don't.

Pros: Great picture and sound.

Cons: Horrid support.

Couldn't get any better.

A from Billings, MT on 2/20/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The picture couldn't get any better with the x.y. Deep Color picture, and the sound is at the top of its game as well. We went through three other Blu-rays before we were finally satisfied with this one. A 300" screen, projector that costs as much as a car, and sound that your girlfriend has labeled her, "engagement ring," can really demonstrate the true capabilities of a Blu-ray, and this one continues to impress.

Pros: Amazing picture and sound, standard streaming capabilities PLUS full internet access via a built in browser, quick loading times even with the fast load turned off (in comparrison to other players, there's still a bit of a wait), variety and choice of Apps to download and use, ease of use. This machine combines the features of several different divices into one and they all perform extreemly well.

Cons: It took me this long to find it!

Poor Performance

FAN from Sinajana, Guam on 2/18/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This product really was not what it was cut out to be. It did not want to stay connected to the internet even after it downloaded the most current firmware. I even call Samsung support and they finally said it needed a repair. Thanks to Crutchfield they sent me another one and it did the same thing. Finally just returned both and picked up the Sony player and it is working just fine.

Nice BD Player for the price

sdunnin from Edwardsville, IL on 2/4/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Been using for a few weeks now. Video playback is great for both DVD and BR. Have not really utilized much in the way of the SmartHub apps yet. I eventually plan to stream video content from my networked storage box but just have not had time to set up yet. One little annoying thing is that I cannot seem to get this unit to automatically open the tray after turning on via a programmed activity on my Harmony remote. I've programmed many activities on a number of remotes and have always managed to get it tweaked out right, For some reason this one is giving me fits. I guess that's not really a fault of the BD-E5900 just a problem for me :-)

Pros: Nice simple remote. Lots of features. Easy to use.

Cons: Unit is very light and you can easily move it around by just pressing the front panel buttons. Doesn't seem to always want to begin playback automatically when disc is inserted.

Big Samsung Fan!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This players WiFi is easy to connect and the picture quality is excellent. I needed to update the firmware on mine, which was a breeze to do. I highly suggest not hesitating, if you are looking for a reasonably priced feature laden unit.

Pros: Great value and excellent features.

Cons: Netflix movie reviews are difficult to read.

Failed After One Month

Gerry from Medford, Oregon on 1/26/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The BD-E5900 played well out of the box. Paired with our Samsung TV, the picture was very good, start-up was okay and features were acceptable. However, the device failed after 31 days of use. Output signal failed, the device would not eject the disc trapped inside and would not accept commands from the remote except power off and on. Called the Samsung tech. support line and spoke with a very personable agent who, in the end, could not help me. The only option was to ship it to Long Beach on my dime. They could not warrant that the trapped disc would be returned. They indicated I would likely receive a "refurbished" unit. These policies are intended to convince the customer to not use the warranty service. It worked as I have replaced the defective unit with an OPPO BD-103.

Pros: Decent feature set; good picture and sound.

Cons: Owner-hostile warranty policies; no local service.

Crutchfield response on 1/29/2013 All products purchased from Crutchfield come with a 60-day money-back guarantee. You may return items that are complete and like new for any reason within 60 days. You may choose an exchange or a refund.

Solid so far

Fred from Rockville, MD on 1/26/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So far, have only used this to stream a couple of Netflix films and watch a couple of DVDs, but the WiFi connection seems much more reliable than the Sony it replaces, which kept saying there was a network error when our laptop had no trouble connecting streaming Netflix from the same location. It takes more time to get online than the Sony did, but I'll take reliable but slow to connect over quick but unreliable.

Pros: Clear, sharp video. Solid WiFi once it gets connected.

Cons: Slow to connect online.

Cons: Lag time moving through menu. Disc noise when movie is playing

This player work great. Connected to my Wi-Fi and now I can enjoy all the train Videos on U-Tube. Have not played a 3D DVD yet but the blue ray disc's are fantastic. I purchased a Samsung Player because I have a 51" Samsung Plasma TV - and this made my set up very easy. I would recommend this player.

Pros: Easy to set up and use

Cons: None

Nice Blu-ray player

Chuck from Kansas City, MO on 12/9/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Haven't played a blu-ray disk yet but plays DVDs great. The wifi apps are almost the same as the Samsung TV apps, so it's kind of redundant. For some reason I can't get Pandora to work, keeps telling me I don't have an account even though I do and it works on my PC and tablet. Putting information into the Internet apps is painful using the remote. Wish there was a better way, takes all the fun out of the apps.

Pros: Good quality, looks good

Cons: Can't get Pandora to work and no keyboard for Internet apps

Cons: None

Nice Piece of equipment

TimM from Fernandina Beach, FL on 11/5/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This unit was free with the purchase of my 60" Samsung Plasma. It has a direct connect feature so that if you insert a disc the TV automatically switches input to the Blue Ray. It can connect to your wireless router or directly to your wireless laptop. A little slow but can be configured to a quick start up.

Pros: Works exactly as it should. Nice looking. Very Compact. Great Quality

Cons: Only has HDMI output (makes sense for Blue Ray 1080 picture). Because it is wireless and connects directly to my laptop, I was going to connect it to a tube set in another room to play DVD's and add wireless functionality to that location but could not because it only had HDMI output (no component). Not a big deal

This 3-D player does everything you need for an enjoyable movie watching experience. It works great with other Samsung devices as well as other brands of equipment. It has all the features you need including all the "smart" features like Netflix, and other internet services. The features are absolutely a great value for the small price tag. Set up took less than 5 minutes. I strongly suggest buying this player because you will not be disappointed!

Pros: Small size, easy set up, wi-fi enabled, "smart" applications, starts up fast, great quality picture and sound, runs quiet.

Disc Compatibility

Disc Compatibility: The Samsung BD-E5900 Blu-ray disc player is compatible with many disc types.

Disc Type Disc Description
Blu-ray BD-ROM, BD-3D, BD-R, BD-RE
CD CD-Audio, CD-R, CD-RW

Blu-ray Disc Overview: Blu-ray Disc (BD) is a new high-definition disc format designed to take advantage of today's high quality HDTVs. The resolution is up to 1920 x 1080 (1080p) and the data transfer rate is up to 40 mbps. Blu-ray Discs and players offer several advantages over the standard DVD format:

  • Better Picture Quality: Blu-ray Disc is a true high-definition format offering video at 720p, 1080i, 1080p, or 1080/24p resolution. While standard DVDs look very good on an HDTV, they don't provide a high-definition signal (not even when you use an up-converting DVD player). Blu-ray Disc delivers an extraordinarily sharp, clean, detailed picture, with deeper, richer colors.
  • Better Sound Quality: In addition to the same multi-channel sound formats you're accustomed to with DVD (Dolby Digital and DTS), Blu-ray Disc offers Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD, and uncompressed 7.1 channel PCM.
  • Greater Storage Capacity: What makes Blu-ray Disc's superior picture and sound possible is the much higher storage capacity of Blu-ray Disc discs. A single-layer Blu-ray Disc can hold 25 gigabytes of data, over five times the amount a standard DVD can hold. Dual-layer Blu-ray Discs hold 50 gigabytes, which equates to nine hours of High Definition or 23 hours of Standard Definition video, plus high-resolution multi-channel audio and the added features and material that require multiple discs with standard DVD.
  • Backward Compatible: To ensure backward-compatibility with your existing library of discs, Blu-ray Disc players use a dual-laser mechanism: a blue laser for playing high-definition Blu-ray Discs, and a conventional red laser for playing DVDs and audio CDs.
Note: Like DVD, BD uses region codes. The region code on your disc must match the region code on your player, otherwise the disc will not play. The BD-E5900 is Blu-ray region A and DVD region 1.  Blu-ray Disc uses the Advanced Access Content System (AACS) to prevent unauthorized recording of copyrighted material.

Firmware/Software Upgrade: As Blu-Ray technology continues to evolve, new disc types with enhanced functionality will become available. In order for you to enjoy this new functionality, you will likely be required to update the firmware in your player. These firmware updates will become available for downloading from the Internet. The player's Software Upgrade menu allows you to upgrade the player's software & firmware for these performance improvements & additional services. You can upgrade in four ways - Internet, USB, Disc, or Downloaded file.

Note: The tested Samsung Blu-ray player contained firmware version 2011/12/23_001003 (as of 4/18/2012). There was an immediate firmware version update available (2011/12/23_001008). Visit the Samsung Download Center for the latest Firmware/Software updates.

Video File Support: The Samsung BD-E5900 Blu-ray disc player supports the following video files recorded onto BD-RE, BD-R, DVD+RW, DVD+R, DVD-RW, and DVD-R discs.

Video Codec Resolution Frame Rate (fps) Bitrate (Mpbs)
MPEG4 SP/ASP 1920 x 1080 6-30 20
H.264 BP/MP/HP 25
H.263 720 x 480 10
Windows Media Video v9 1920 x 1080 25
MPEG2 24, 25, or 30
MPEG1 352 x 288 24 or 25 20

Music File Support: The Samsung BD-E5900 Blu-ray disc player supports the following music files recorded onto BD-RE, BD-R, DVD+RW, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD-R, and CD-R/RW discs.

Audio Codec Sampling Rates (kHz) Bitrate (kbps)
MP3 (.mp3) N/A up to 320 kbps
WMA (.wma) 8, 11, 16, 22, 32, 44.1, or 48 5-384

Photo File Support: The Samsung BD-E5900 Blu-ray disc player supports JPEG still-image files recorded onto BD-RE, BD-R, DVD+RW, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD-R, and CD-R/RW discs.

Video Features

HDMI ver.1.4: The Samsung Blu-ray player is equipped with an HDMI (v.1.4) output. HDMI simplifies A/V connections by carrying video and digital audio all in one cable. The HDMI output resolution can be set to 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i or 1080p when playing a DVD or Blu-ray Disc; also 1080/24p when playing a compatible BD.

Note: The Blu-ray player provides no analog video outputs.

1080/24p: Movies are typically filmed at 24 frames per second and some Blu-ray Discs use the same frame rate. If your TV will accept a 1080/24p signal, the BD-E5900 can pass the signal in its native form, without converting the video.

Video Up-conversion: When connected to your TV using the HDMI output, the BD-E5900 scales the output of a standard DVD signal to HD-compatible 720p, 1080i, or 1080p. The unit also supports 480p and 480i output if your television is not HD-compatible.

Progressive Mode: The Samsung Blu-ray disc player provides a Progressive mode to improve picture quality when viewing a DVD movie.
