Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If you are looking for a blu ray player with wifi built in to access internet content such as Netflix and Pandora this is a great unit. It has an app search feature that will allow you to connect to most, if not all, popular online video an audio services. It has direct connect buttons to Netflix and Pandora. I found it easy to set up and it found my wifi connection without any problem. We saved quite a bit of money by getting a dumb TV and a smart bluray player. It seems a little slow to load up but this is my first bluray device so maybe they are all that way. HDMI is wonderful. It cut my cable nest at least in half. You can connect directly to internet but I have not used that feature.

Pros: Easy to set up. Built in WiFi. Tons of apps. Slot loading so you don't have to deal with or allow room for a tray. Inexpensive for what you get.

Cons: A little slow loading.

Great BDP Unit

BrianP from Kentucky on 1/11/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The upconversion was very nicely done and the picture was very good as well. The unit worked well with my system and was a breeze to setup.

Pros: Easy setup and great output.

Cons: The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that the build quality was sub-standard. I'm used to components that provide a great chassis and isolation. The Samsung does all the right things, but it's construction was built cheaply. Given it's price, I guess that's to be expected.

Pros: Fast, easy to setup & operate.

Cons: none

Disappointed right out of the box

Hemi from Chicago, Il on 1/5/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I hocked the dvd player up and right from there it went down hill. It would not take a disc bluray or standard. I was really disappointed. I just got a 55" 3D tv and over the weekend I didn't have a 3D bluray to play on it. I shipped right back. I didn't want anything to do this samsung. I didn't want to give it any stars but, I had to in order to get this to go thru.

Pros: I was able to get my money back.

Cons: It didn't work right out of the box.

Audio Issue

Eldon from Hershey, NE on 1/2/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I wanted a wi-fi Blu-Ray that would connect with my older equipment. HDMI/DVi video and analog audio only at tv. Digital Dolby surround receiver has optical input. This player has HDMI1 and HDMI2 inputs as well as the Blue-Ray, HDMI and optical output. I was only able to use the optical output when playing discs. Even the web sources did not have audio at the optical output. So. I sent it back. Great Blu-ray for connecting other sources IF you have HDMI all the way around. Found a Sony BDP-S590 that connected and gave me optical and analog sound to my equipment right out of the box.

Pros: Nice design. Good option idea with the HDMI1 and HDMI2 additional inputs. Typical Blu-ray quality video and sound. Highest rating in Crutchfield's test against three other brands. I liked my older Samsung BP-1600 player but no wi-fi.

Cons: No loading tray. Load into slot. No secondary audio outputs.

First blue ray player

Jorge from Mulberry, FL on 1/2/2013

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was advised to get this player based on the purchase I had made before of a Smart 3D Samsung TV. The player looks fine and its set up was very easy. The way it couples with the TV is amazing. I love it. It is my first experience with 3D capable video equipment so I am very excited to enter the world of 3D.

Pros: Easy to set up, sleek and handy. Loads disc quickly. Delivers outstanding picture. Easy to follow instructions, well designed remote.

Cons: None whatsoever

Everything about this unit was exactly as promised. Set-up was easy, picture quality was very good. Grant you there are better units for a higher price, but for me and my viewing habits is more then good enough.

Pros: Easy set-up, picture quality excellent, more then enough apps for me and operation is quick and easy.

Great player

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

When I went disc player shopping this time around, I wasn't just looking for one that had great picture and sound quality, I wanted one that had a quick easy-to-use interface. It the past, this hasn't mattered so much to me since I've mostly just slid in a disk and hit play. But these days our watching is evenly split between disks and streaming media, which requires more user interaction. The Netflix integration is great. Boot time is great. A good choice.

A no brainer!

BarneyH from Fort Worth, TX on 9/22/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So easy to set up that even I could do it the first try. It automatically found my wireless network and linked without a hitch. The Smart feature was redundant for us because we have a Samsung Smart TV. However the 3D Blueray unit appears to have some apps my television does not yet support. I love the auto play feature.

Pros: Quick and easy setup Most of the popular apps like Netflicks, Hulu Plus, etc.

Cons: Does not support Amazon yet.

My nw 3D Blu-ray

B.I. from Gainesville, FL on 8/17/2012

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Gives an outstanding picture. This is my 3rd Blu-ray machine and it is the very best yet!

Pros: So very easy to set up. It is almost plug and play. There is no flash drive that needs to be connected as in previous units I have. con! I really like the way that the discs load without a tray. It's like putting a cd into your car player.

Cons: Having to look up the security code for my wireless router. It sure is petty if that is the only

Best Player Ever!

Geekteach from Monterey Bay, CA on 8/16/2012

This is the third blu-ray player I've owned, and it's much more impressive than its predecessors. It plays BDs and DVDs equally well, and its wifi and Netflix capabilities work very well. I like this blu-ray player so much that I bought a second one for my bedroom TV set. I'm looking for a third one for my guest bedroom, but they're not easy to find.

Pros: Easy set-up, plays BDs and DVDs equally well, slim profile, slot-driven (no tray)

Cons: none

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Just received this two days ago. Very easy to set up . Detailed instructions are provided, but not needed. Setting up with your wireless network is very smooth. DVD's load quickly and have an awesome picture. The app suite that comes with it are among the best out there as far as variety goes..I needed a player with a optical input for audio as well as a HDMI input for video so this one fit the bill perfectly.

Pros: Easy set up. Awesome app suite. MLB.TV looks great! Would have given 5 stars but reserving final judgement until I've had it awhile.

Linda from Indiana on 4/9/2012

I have purchased two of these wifi DVD players in the last month. The first one they forgot to program netflix on it and the second I had for two weeks and all internet connections disapeared. I called service and they disconnected me. I guess they could not find the problem. I now have a Sony wifi BlueRay DVD player and love it. Easy set up and use. Much better quality for the same price.

Pros: None

Cons: Terrible product, broke in two weeks. Custmer Service is terrible.

Disc Compatibility

Disc Compatibility: The Samsung BD-E6500 Blu-ray disc player is compatible with many disc types.

Disc Type Disc Description
Blu-ray BD-ROM, BD 3D, BD-R, BD-RE
CD CD-Audio, CD-R, CD-RW

Blu-ray Disc Overview: Blu-ray Disc (BD) is a new high-definition disc format designed to take advantage of today's high quality HDTVs. The resolution is up to 1920 x 1080 (1080p) and the data transfer rate is up to 40 mbps. Blu-ray Discs and players offer several advantages over the standard DVD format:

  • Better Picture Quality: Blu-ray Disc is a true high-definition format offering video at 720p, 1080i, 1080p, or 1080/24p resolution. While standard DVDs look very good on an HDTV, they don't provide a high-definition signal (not even when you use an up-converting DVD player). Blu-ray Disc delivers an extraordinarily sharp, clean, detailed picture, with deeper, richer colors.
  • Better Sound Quality: In addition to the same multi-channel sound formats you're accustomed to with DVD (Dolby Digital and DTS), Blu-ray Disc offers Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD, and uncompressed 7.1 channel PCM.
  • Greater Storage Capacity: What makes Blu-ray Disc's superior picture and sound possible is the much higher storage capacity of Blu-ray Disc discs. A single-layer Blu-ray Disc can hold 25 gigabytes of data, over five times the amount a standard DVD can hold. Dual-layer Blu-ray Discs hold 50 gigabytes, which equates to nine hours of High Definition or 23 hours of Standard Definition video, plus high-resolution multi-channel audio and the added features and material that require multiple discs with standard DVD.
  • Backward Compatible: To ensure backward-compatibility with your existing library of discs, Blu-ray Disc players use a dual-laser mechanism: a blue laser for playing high-definition Blu-ray Discs, and a conventional red laser for playing DVDs and audio CDs.

Note: Like DVD, BD uses region codes. The region code on your disc must match the region code on your player, otherwise the disc will not play. The BD-E6500 is Blu-ray region A and DVD region 1.  Blu-ray Disc uses the Advanced Access Content System (AACS) to prevent unauthorized recording of copyrighted material.

Firmware/Software Upgrade: As Blu-Ray technology continues to evolve, new disc types with enhanced functionality will become available. In order for you to enjoy this new functionality, you will likely be required to update the firmware in your player. These firmware updates will become available for downloading from the Internet. The player's Software Upgrade menu allows you to upgrade the player's software & firmware for these performance improvements & additional services. You can upgrade in four ways - Internet, USB, Disc, or Downloaded file.

Note: The tested Samsung Blu-ray player contained firmware version 2011/12/23_001002 (as of 3/23/2012). There was an immediate firmware version update available (2011/12/23_001007). Visit the Samsung Download Center for the latest Firmware/Software updates.

Video File Support: The Samsung BD-E6500 Blu-ray disc player supports the following video files recorded onto BD-RE, BD-R, DVD+RW, DVD+R, DVD-RW, and DVD-R discs.

Video Codec Resolution Frame Rate (fps) Bitrate (Mpbs)
MPEG4 SP/ASP 1920 x 1080 6-30 20
H.264 BP/MP/HP 25
H.263 720 x 480 10
Windows Media Video v9 1920 x 1080 25
MPEG2 24, 25, or 30
MPEG1 352 x 288 24 or 25 20

Music File Support: The Samsung BD-E6500 Blu-ray disc player supports the following music files recorded onto BD-RE, BD-R, DVD+RW, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD-R, and CD-R/RW discs.

Audio Codec Sampling Rates (kHz) Bitrate (kbps)
MP3 (.mp3) N/A up to 320 kbps
WMA (.wma) 8, 11, 16, 22, 32, 44.1, or 48 5-384

Photo File Support: The Samsung BD-E6500 Blu-ray disc player supports JPEG still-image files recorded onto BD-RE, BD-R, DVD+RW, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD-R, and CD-R/RW discs.

Video Features

HDMI ver.1.4: The Samsung Blu-ray player is equipped with single HDMI (v.1.4) output and dual HDMI (v.1.4) inputs. HDMI simplifies A/V connections by carrying video and digital audio all in one cable.

  • HDMI Out: The HDMI output resolution can be set to 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i or 1080p when playing a DVD or Blu-ray Disc; also 1080/24p when playing a compatible BD. The player's HDMI output supports 3D video.
  • Dual HDMI Inputs: The two HDMI inputs on the rear-panel of the Blu-ray player let you increase the number of HDMI-compatible devices you can connect to your TV. The player will pass video (up to 1080P) and audio (up to 7.1ch) from the HDMI 1/2 inputs to the HDMI output. The HDMI 1 Input offers a pass-through function which allows you to view the input source from the player's  HDMI output on your TV without turning on the player.

Note: The Blu-ray player provides no analog video inputs/outputs.

1080/24p: Movies are typically filmed at 24 frames per second and some Blu-ray Discs use the same frame rate. If your TV will accept a 1080/24p signal, the BD-E6500 can pass the signal in its native form, without converting the video.

Video Up-conversion: When connected to your TV using the HDMI output, the BD-E6500 scales the output of a standard DVD signal to HD-compatible 720p, 1080i, or 1080p. The unit also supports 480p and 480i output if your television is not HD-compatible.

Progressive Mode: The Samsung Blu-ray disc player provides a Progressive mode to improve picture quality when viewing a DVD movie.

Full HD 3D: The Samsung BD-E6500 3D Blu-ray disc player supports 3D playback of high-definition 3D Blu-ray discs when connected to a 3D-Ready HDTV via HDMI, along with wearing a pair 3D vision glasses. You can select from three 3D modes to suit your viewing needs.

  • Auto: Automatically detects the 3D capability of your connected TV and play a 3D Blu-ray disc in 3D or 2D accordingly.
  • 3D-to-3D: 3D Blu-ray disc played in 3D mode regardless of your connected TV. When your connected TV does not support 3D, you may see a black screen.
  • 3D-to-2D: 3D Blu-ray disc is played in 2D image at all times. Choose this to view a 3D Blu-ray disc without 3D effect.

Deep Color: Deep Color allows more accurate color reproduction with deep color depth. The BD-E6500 must be connected to a Deep Color compatible TV via HDMI for this feature to function.

x.v.Color: The BD-E6500 supports x.v.Color; meaning it's ready for x.v.Color discs, such as AVCHD discs (MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 format).

Screen Size: You can enter the actual screen size (up to 116") of your TV, so that the player can adjust the image according to the screen size and display an optimal image.

TV Aspect: You can adjust the video output of the BD-E6500 to match the screen-type of your television. You can choose from 4:3 Letter-Box, 4:3 Pan-Scan, 16:9 Wide, and 16:9 Normal.

Picture Settings: This function enables you to adjust video quality when the player is connected to your TV.

  • Normal: Suitable for most viewing applications.
  • Movie: Suitable for watching movies.
  • Dynamic: Increases sharpness.
  • User: Lets you adjust the sharpness and noise reduction function manually.

BD Wise: BD Wise is Samsung's latest inter-connectivity feature. When you connect Samsung products with BD-Wise to each other via HDMI, the optimum resolution will be set automatically.

Bonus View: The Bonus View feature provides picture-in-picture capability with select Blu-ray Disc titles. You can view addition content (such as director/actor commentary) in a small display window while the movie is playing.

Audio Features

Dolby Digital/DTS Surround Decoding: The BD-E6500 can decode the following Dolby Digital/DTS surround formats; Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby True HD, DTS HD High Resolution, and DTS-HD Master Audio. The player must be connected to a Dolby Digital/DTS surround AV receiver which also supports these same formats via optical or HDMI input.

Digital Output/Surround Mode Chart: You can set the unit's Digital Output (HDMI or optical) to match the capabilities of your connected AV receiver.

PCM Downsampling: This feature lets you choose to have 96kHz PCM signals downsampled to 48kHz before they are output to your AV receiver.

Downmixing Mode: This feature lets you select the multichannel downmix method that is compatible with your stereo receiver. You can choose to have the player downmix to normal stereo or to surround compatible stereo.

Dynamic Range Control: When movie soundtracks are played at low volume or from smaller speakers, the system can apply appropriate compression to make low-level content more intelligible and prevent dramatic passages from getting too loud. This is only active when a Dolby Digital signal is detected.

DTS Neo:6 Mode: The unit's DTS Neo:6 mode gives you the ability to enjoy multichannel sound via the player's HDMI output from a 2 channel audio source.

Digital Audio Output: The Blu-ray disc player features a digital optical (toslink) output. The player's audio menu allows you to select the digital audio format that is passed through the optical digital output; bitstream (Dolby Digital or DTS) or 2-channel PCM.

Note: The Blu-ray player provides no analog audio outputs.

Network/USB Functions

Network Connection (wired/wireless): You can set up the Samsung Blu-ray player so that it can access your home network and online Samsung Apps through your local area network (LAN) using a wired (RJ-45 Ethernet) or wireless connection (built-in WiFi). You can setup a wired network connection automatically or manually. You can setup the wireless network connection using these four methods; PBC (WPS), Auto Network Search, One Foot, or Manually.

Note: The Blu-ray player's built-in WiFi supports IEEE 802.11A/B/G/N wireless LAN networks and WEP (open/shared), WPA-PSK (TKIP/AES), WPA2-PSK (TKIP/AES) network security.

WiFi Direct: When using WiFi Direct, you can connect directly with other devices without using a wireless router. You'll be able to wirelessly transfer personal content (such as photos & videos) to the Samsung Blu-ray player without connecting to your home network. WiFi Direct completely bypasses your WiFi access point/router, so it's easy to set up. Streaming of copy-protected content and other certain formats are not supported.

This eliminates the need to copy your photo, video, and music files to a separate USB storage device.

Note: Windows PCs with XP and Vista installed require Samsung's PC Share Manager software, which can be downloaded for free at Not compatible with older Windows OS versions and Mac.
