Our take on the Samsung BD-H5900

Did that hit 3D movie everyone called a "jaw dropper" make you shrug your shoulders instead? Maybe you weren't watching it the way it was meant to be seen. With the Samsung BD-H5900 and a 3D-capable HDTV, you'll see the deep, unique visual palette the director created when you pop in that 3D Blu-ray disc. Expect a quality two-dimensional picture also. The BD-H5900 plays regular Blu-ray titles in 1080p HD and offers video upconversion for standard DVDs. And you won't just improve the picture, you'll open up the capabilities of your home theater speakers as well. The latest surround sound formats are supported, including Dolby® TrueHD and DTS-HD®.

Keep the kids — and parents — happy

Not only will the BD-H5900 play the Blu-ray disc the kids like to watch over and over again, but when they (or you) get tired of it, you have options. Built-in Wi-Fi connects you to streaming services loaded with children's programming. When they go off to sleep, you can stream those grown-up TV shows you wouldn't dare watch around the little ones. There are also several ways to unwind with some music. You can play a CD, stream directly from a music service, or wirelessly connect to a compatible networked PC via DLNA technology and play the tunes from your computer.

Beam images to your screen

Sometimes your phone screen is just too small for your task. Maybe you want to share a video or picture with a group of people. Wirelessly "push" the display to your TV's big screen through the BD-H5900. Miracast™ technology mirrors the screen of your compatible Samsung mobile device, tablet, or computer screen for everyone to see.

Love it great buy

Not pleased with my purchase..

Steve J from Maryland on 4/26/2015

I was in a hurry to get a DVD / BD player, and unfortunately didn't have time to go to Crutchfield like I normally would have.. Instead, I bought this model at the local retail discount store. Seems to have decent features.. all the same stuff my TV already has though.. pandora, netflix, etc.. so I didnt' really need all that stuff.. BUT.. dont be fooled by the TV control buttons on the remote.. It is NOT a universal or programmable remote - It is hardcoded to only control some Samsung TVs. If you have another TV brand, you're out of luck.. you'll have to control the DVD with one remote, and the TV volume with another. Not good for keeping the coffee table un-cluttered. If only I had bought from Crutchfield, I could return it.. As for using the player.. we put our first DVD in it, and in the 3 hour show, it blanked out and paused for 2 seconds maybe 10 or more times through the movie. The DVD is fine - I was able to subsequently play it in my laptop with no issue. All in all, any DVD player is a commodity these days, but for what I got, I think this thing is overpriced, and for the samsung brand, I am dissapointed..

Pros: It's a BD player, easy to hook up, and has some nice networking features

Cons: Remote is not able to control any other than Samsung TVs.. player seems to have random problems playing DVDs even on latest firmware

Not so easy to set-up.

DaveG from Wisconsin on 3/12/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I'm using this device only as a DVD/Blue-ray play and it is well worth the money. It has many other capabilities which I don't use. I've paired this with a Samsung UN65H7150 tv. With the Samsung BD-wise feature the tv signal source will change automatically to the player when the player is powered on and the player will automatically provide the tv the best video format based on the media being played. I feel these are slick features.

Pros: Fast loading Slim design Price performance ratio

Cons: Disc on top has four touch sensors for power, open/close, play, stop - the delayed response from these switches take some getting used to and the location isn't the best for my installation.

Works Like It's New

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was a very economically priced blu ray player (under $100) to replace my previous, inoperable Samsung blu ray player. Set up was super easy.

Pros: Inexpensive, easy set up and easy to use.

Cons: The home screen seems generic and basic compared to my previous model BD-EM59C.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is the second BD-H5900 I have the first to make a long story short would lock up on me also could not control the player from the Samsung 50" Smart TV. I finally email Crutchfield, the next day they gave me a number to contact Tech support. I called Tech support 10:30 Tuesday and spoke to Cecial and told him the problem which he also had the order number from the email. He said right away the unit has a problem, I'm going to send you another one. Your email will have a return mail label to return the old unit. I waited a few minutes, he got back on and said the order has been placed for the new unit. I expected the order would take about two or three days. I was surprise when 3:30 the new unit arrived. In about three minutes I had the new unit installed and running. Make a long story short, every thing is working like it's supposed to, no problem. One hundred percent satisfied. One thing I must said, Crutchfield is a GREAT, I would definitely recommend them, I will always buy my Electronic equipment from them. As far as Samsung, I've used Samsung products for a number of year as well as my sons. As a retired engineer and in electronic since I was 16 am now 81, I'm well aware even the best equipment can developed a problem. Samsung is still a GREAT company making GREAT products. I still highly recommend them and of course Crutchfield, both get 5 STARS.

Pros: Excellent product, GREAT PICTURE, GREAT PRICE, EASE of use.

Cons: NONE

A great unit for a great price!

Mitchdoctor from Harrisonburg, VA on 2/4/2015

I needed a dependable blue ray DVD for our church, and the Samsung had the highest rating on Consumer Reports. I paid less than $100 including taxes, and this was much less than I was expecting for a player of this quality. The picture (on our LG flat screen) is crystal clear, and the set-up was ridiculously easy. Our last player -- I won't mention the brand -- lasted less than a year; we're hoping for a much longer life for the Samsung BD-H5900.

Pros: Cost, ease of set-up, quality picture.

Cons: None so far.

This player was an upgrade and all I can say is wow. Easy to set up, easy to use. I would recommend this player in a heartbeat.

Pros: Quick start, ease of operation, picture quality excellent.

Cons: None so far.

Good product for price.

blc from Sebring, FL on 1/18/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So far had e used several times. For the price it seems to do very good. Reason not rated 5stars is that the remote is to crammed all together. They should have made it easier/more user friendly. Another shortcoming is that it does not have very many apps you can use. It does its job, so far, as to playing DGDs.

Pros: Loads Dvds easily. Price. Brand.

Cons: Remote can be difficult.

Very good Samsung Quality

micro2go from Myrtle Beach, SC on 12/29/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Typical good Samsung quality.... just plug it in and my Samsung 60 inch LED TV recognized it immediately. I only gave it 4 stars as there are many others at a higher price but as those features are already included in my TV I didn't need them.

Pros: Good quality for a lower price.

Cons: None so far.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great product from Samsung. Then again, Samsung makes many great products - some may as good but there are few that are better. I especially like the idea of upgrading the firmware/software as I was able to use Amazon Prime. The digital readout was also nice asI would prefer my Blu-ray player to have one as not. The compact size is also great and the price was an added plus. For the money, you won't go wrong with this Samsung Blu-ray 3D player. The installation was easy and one does not a lot of technical know-how. Just read the manual and follow the applicable instructions.

Pros: Size, price, and Crutchfield's great shipping and technical support.

Cons: None found as yet.

Very versatile

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I received this product free from Crutchfield when I purchased my Samsung TV, I like the features and ease of use. If I had to purchase one I would get another one of these.

Pros: Easy hook up, no problem with wi-fi, Netflix runs great as well as the other apps that come with it. It is very thin and small which lets it fit nicely with my other components.

Cons: None so far.

Excellent DVD Player for the Price

rprice from Laurel, MD on 9/18/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Blu-Ray play was very easy to set up. Only difficulty was locating the Wi-Fi MAC address to add to my router security filter list, but I stumbled thru the menus and finally located it. My wife has been playing her John Wayne CD on it and it does nicely. The the Wi-Fi hookup we can stream video from Netflix which is sweet.

Pros: Easy to use.

Cons: Documentation does not talk about MAC address for Wi-Fi and how to locate it.

Jeff from Radcliff, Kentucky on 8/9/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

As always I love Crutchfield for their outstanding service and fast shipping. I've been buying stuff from them for years and have never had a problem. Now, onto this Blu-ray player. Do yourself a favor and do extensive research, save yourself some hassle and money and buy a better player because this thing is junk! I received mine yesterday, set up and everything was easy. But right off the bat I noticed this thing is REALLY noisy. Been testing it with Blu-ray Discs since I received it and have had nothing but problems with it. It keeps locking up, skipping, etc. VERY disappointed in this product! And yes, I did update the firmware. I will be returning this model for an upgrade ASAP!

Pros: Absolutely none!

Cons: Very noisy, locks up and skips too often.

Very user-friendly -- like out of the box and you can use it without reading any instructions. The picture quality is very clear and colors are vibrant and true. It works very well with my Samsung Smart TV. You can even get to Netflix and other apps from this device.

Pros: Easy to use, picture quality is excellent

Cons: None

Good with DVD's

Handel from Dayton, OH on 8/2/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this player as part of a Samsung TV purchase. I've had limited, but good, experience using it for Blu-Ray discs. But, I have some DVD's with great production qualities which upscale impressively with this player.

Pros: Easy to set up. Good job of up-scaling. Integrated well with my 12 year old sound system via the coax digital audio. I did have to run the HDMI direct to the TV. Works with my programmable remote.

Cons: Tray seems insubstantial. Controls on the device itself are hard to see when in a rack, or feel. This is complicated by the fact that responses to these controls are somewhat delayed, so a correct press may seem to be a miss.

excellent player for the money

S.Gill from Lexington, KY on 7/20/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Player works well. The only complaint is there is no built-in memory for BD-Live features. You can plug a USB drive into the front port for this purpose, but that ruins the sleek lines of the front of the unit. 3-D works perfectly.

Pros: great performance, low cost

Cons: no built in flash memory

Hooking it up was easy - just a HDMI cable to the TV and to the power outlet. My TV (also a Samsung) is 3D capable and I wanted a 3D DVD player. This one works extremely well! I've only had it a short time, but so far no problems.

Pros: Easy Set Up, Great picture.

Video Section

HDMI ver.1.4: The Samsung Blu-ray player is equipped with an HDMI (v.1.4) output. HDMI simplifies A/V connections by carrying video and digital audio all in one cable. The HDMI output resolution can be set to 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i or 1080p when playing a DVD or Blu-ray Disc; also 1080/24p when playing a compatible BD.

  • 1080/24p: Movies are typically filmed at 24 frames per second and some Blu-ray Discs use the same frame rate. If your TV will accept a 1080/24p signal, the BD-H5900 can pass the signal in its native form, without converting the video.
  • HD Up-conversion: With HD Up-conversion, non-HD video is auto-enhanced to bring you near-HD quality. You'll see your favorite titles with greater detail and clarity on your HDTV.
Note: The Blu-ray player provides no analog video or audio outputs.

Full HD 3D: The Samsung BD-H5900 3D Blu-ray disc player supports 3D playback of high-definition 3D Blu-ray discs when connected to a 3D-Ready HDTV via HDMI, along with wearing a pair 3D vision glasses. You can select from three 3D modes to suit your viewing needs.

  • Auto: Automatically detects the 3D capability of your connected TV and play a 3D Blu-ray disc in 3D or 2D accordingly.
  • 3D-to-3D: 3D Blu-ray disc played in 3D mode regardless of your connected TV. When your connected TV does not support 3D, you may see a black screen.
  • 3D-to-2D: 3D Blu-ray disc is played in 2D image at all times. Choose this to view a 3D Blu-ray disc without 3D effect.

Progressive Mode: The Samsung Blu-ray disc player provides a Progressive mode to improve picture quality when viewing a DVD movie.

Deep/x.v. Color: Deep Color allows more accurate color reproduction with deep color depth. The BD-H5900 must be connected to a Deep Color compatible TV via HDMI for this feature to function. The BD-H5900 also supports x.v.Color; meaning it's ready for x.v.Color discs, such as AVCHD discs (MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 format).

TV Aspect: You can adjust the video output of the BD-H5900 to match the screen-type of your television. You can choose from 4:3 Letter-Box, 4:3 Pan-Scan, 16:9 Wide, and 16:9 Normal.

BD Wise: BD Wise is Samsung's latest inter-connectivity feature. When you connect Samsung products with BD-Wise to each other via HDMI, the optimum resolution will be set automatically.

Bonus View: The Bonus View feature provides picture-in-picture capability with select Blu-ray Disc titles. You can view addition content (such as director/actor commentary) in a small display window while the movie is playing.

Audio Section

Dolby Digital/DTS Surround Decoding: The BD-H5900 has built-in Dolby Digital and DTS surround processors; multi-channel PCM Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD High Resolution, and DTS-HD Master Audio are output through the HDMI jack (when encoded on the Blu-ray Disc).  The player must be connected to a Dolby Digital/DTS surround AV receiver which also supports these same formats via coaxial or HDMI input.

  • Dolby Digital Plus: Dolby Digital Plus was developed as an extension to Dolby Digital. The audio coding technology supports 7.1 channel surround sound. Dolby Digital Plus also includes the standard Dolby Digital bit stream and is compatible with all current Dolby Digital processors using the coaxial digital output.
  • Dolby TrueHD: Dolby TrueHD is a lossless coding technology that supports up to 8 channels of multi-channel surround sound for the next generation optical discs. The reproduced sound is true to the original source bit-for-bit.
  • DTS-HD High Resolution Audio: DTS-HD High Resolution Audio supports a maximum sampling frequency of 96 kHz, and 7.1 multi-channel surround. DTS-HD High Resolution Audio has a maximum transmission rate of 6 Mbps, with a lossy compression.
  • DTS-HD Master Audio: DTS-HD Master Audio has a maximum transmission rate of 24.5 Mbps and uses lossless compression (Lossless), and DTS-HD Master Audio corresponds to a maximum sampling frequency of 192 kHz, and maximum of 7.1ch.
Note: Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, and DTS-HD are only output via the player's HDMI output.

Digital Output/Surround Mode Chart: You can set the unit's Digital Output (HDMI or Coaxial) to match the capabilities of your connected AV receiver.

PCM Downsampling: This feature lets you choose to have 96kHz PCM signals downsampled to 48kHz before they are output to your AV receiver.

Downmixing Mode: This feature lets you select the multichannel downmix method that is compatible with your stereo receiver. You can choose to have the player downmix to normal stereo or to surround compatible stereo.

Dynamic Range Control: When movie soundtracks are played at low volume or from smaller speakers, the system can apply appropriate compression to make low-level content more intelligible and prevent dramatic passages from getting too loud. This is only active when a Dolby Digital signal is detected.

Digital Audio Output: The Blu-ray disc player features a digital coaxial (RCA) output. The player's audio menu allows you to select the digital audio format that is passed through the coaxial digital output; bitstream (Dolby Digital or DTS) or 2-channel PCM.

Note: The Blu-ray player provides no analog audio outputs.

Q & A

Customer Q&A

Crutchfield asked
Why did you buy this?

I was looking for a blue ray player and this was rated best in 2015. I chose Crutchfield because they were rated the best. [ Jeta  Dec 07, 2015 ]

No, there is no digital optical output on the unit. You can hook it up to your receiver with a digital coaxial cable. That's what I did and it works fine. [ Robert  Dec 06, 2015 ]
Rear panel has HDMI, LAN and Digital Audio (coaxial) out. Sorry, no digital optical. [ Teddy  Dec 05, 2015 ]
Yes, as I recall I hooked it to my TV with HDMI cable and to the audio receiver (which is fairly old with no HDMI input/output) with digital optical cable for the audio. Either that, or I went to the TV with HDMI and then from the TV to the audio receiver with digital optical cable. Not in a position to check it at the moment. [ J Harper  Dec 05, 2015 ]
NO. The BD-H5900 does not have optical audio output ...sorry. [ Marco  Dec 05, 2015 ]
It does not have the Amazon app, so streaming content from Amazon is not possible. Thanks Joseph [ JOSEPH  Mar 30, 2015 ]
Yes, it does. [ Thomas  Mar 21, 2015 ]
YES [ Phil  Mar 21, 2015 ]
I'm not quite sure what a region free player is, and since I do not own this unit I'm not able to answer your question. I would have to rely on the first answer by Scott A. as he seems to have had his unit for a year and it appears to be working fine for him. Robert S [ ROBERT  Jan 29, 2015 ]
Yes, from what I have read this is a Region Free player. Absolutely love this player! Have had this for almost a year now, have had no complaints. Hope this helps. Scott [ Scott  Jan 27, 2015 ]
sorry i don't even know what "region area" means [ JAMES A  Jan 27, 2015 ]
You would need to purchase a coax digital to optical audio converter. Then you could connect it directly to an active or powered sound bar with optical inputs. You could not connect it to a passive or non powered sound bar without a receiver. [ DAVID  Aug 06, 2015 ]
The only audio out of BD-H5900 is either through high-speed HDMI cable or coaxial cable. There is no optical signal output nor outlet for an optical audio cable. Moreover it could not be connected with speakers or sound bars without the assistance of an audio amplifier in between. [ GIO B  Sep 16, 2014 ]
Sorry. We do not have access to FIOS. . [ ARIE Y  May 14, 2014 ]
I only installed this machine less than a month ago ando not have much experience. Pictures are super. It did connect to FIOS internet flawlessly, and I suspect it will do what you ask. Keying in commands is a slow business, but I imagine all BD players have this handicap. Stay well, GBG [ GIO B  May 14, 2014 ]
I haven't tried. I stream directly to my new Samsung 75H7150 TV using Verizon FIOS. [ Phil  May 13, 2014 ]
No I have not tried to play a 4k bluray on this player. [ TERRY V  Apr 23, 2014 ]
really don't know,sorry [ JAY  Apr 22, 2014 ]
i haven't tried any 4k discs that is beyond my system capabilities [ JAMES A  Apr 22, 2014 ]
