3D Blu-ray player with Wi-Fi®
Our take on the Samsung BD-H5900 by Crutchfield's Jeff Miller
Improve your movie experience
Did that hit 3D movie everyone called a "jaw dropper" make you shrug your shoulders instead? Maybe you weren't watching it the way it was meant to be seen. With the Samsung BD-H5900 and a 3D-capable HDTV, you'll see the deep, unique visual palette the director created when you pop in that 3D Blu-ray disc. Expect a quality two-dimensional picture also. The BD-H5900 plays regular Blu-ray titles in 1080p HD and offers video upconversion for standard DVDs. And you won't just improve the picture, you'll open up the capabilities of your home theater speakers as well. The latest surround sound formats are supported, including Dolby® TrueHD and DTS-HD®.
Keep the kids — and parents — happy
Not only will the BD-H5900 play the Blu-ray disc the kids like to watch over and over again, but when they (or you) get tired of it, you have options. Built-in Wi-Fi connects you to streaming services loaded with children's programming. When they go off to sleep, you can stream those grown-up TV shows you wouldn't dare watch around the little ones. There are also several ways to unwind with some music. You can play a CD, stream directly from a music service, or wirelessly connect to a compatible networked PC via DLNA technology and play the tunes from your computer.
Beam images to your screen
Sometimes your phone screen is just too small for your task. Maybe you want to share a video or picture with a group of people. Wirelessly "push" the display to your TV's big screen through the BD-H5900. Miracast™ technology mirrors the screen of your compatible Samsung mobile device, tablet, or computer screen for everyone to see.
wonderful DVD, Blue Ray and CD player everything that we expected plus more would recommend this product to anyone

HDMI ver.1.4: The Samsung Blu-ray player is equipped with an HDMI (v.1.4) output. HDMI simplifies A/V connections by carrying video and digital audio all in one cable. The HDMI output resolution can be set to 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i or 1080p when playing a DVD or Blu-ray Disc; also 1080/24p when playing a compatible BD.
- 1080/24p: Movies are typically filmed at 24 frames per second and some Blu-ray Discs use the same frame rate. If your TV will accept a 1080/24p signal, the BD-H5900 can pass the signal in its native form, without converting the video.
- HD Up-conversion: With HD Up-conversion, non-HD video is auto-enhanced to bring you near-HD quality. You'll see your favorite titles with greater detail and clarity on your HDTV.
Note: The Blu-ray player provides no analog video or audio outputs.
Full HD 3D: The Samsung BD-H5900 3D Blu-ray disc player supports 3D playback of high-definition 3D Blu-ray discs when connected to a 3D-Ready HDTV via HDMI, along with wearing a pair 3D vision glasses. You can select from three 3D modes to suit your viewing needs.
- Auto: Automatically detects the 3D capability of your connected TV and play a 3D Blu-ray disc in 3D or 2D accordingly.
- 3D-to-3D: 3D Blu-ray disc played in 3D mode regardless of your connected TV. When your connected TV does not support 3D, you may see a black screen.
- 3D-to-2D: 3D Blu-ray disc is played in 2D image at all times. Choose this to view a 3D Blu-ray disc without 3D effect.
Progressive Mode: The Samsung Blu-ray disc player provides a Progressive mode to improve picture quality when viewing a DVD movie.
Deep/x.v. Color: Deep Color allows more accurate color reproduction with deep color depth. The BD-H5900 must be connected to a Deep Color compatible TV via HDMI for this feature to function. The BD-H5900 also supports x.v.Color; meaning it's ready for x.v.Color discs, such as AVCHD discs (MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 format).
TV Aspect: You can adjust the video output of the BD-H5900 to match the screen-type of your television. You can choose from 4:3 Letter-Box, 4:3 Pan-Scan, 16:9 Wide, and 16:9 Normal.
BD Wise: BD Wise is Samsung's latest inter-connectivity feature. When you connect Samsung products with BD-Wise to each other via HDMI, the optimum resolution will be set automatically.
Bonus View: The Bonus View feature provides picture-in-picture capability with select Blu-ray Disc titles. You can view addition content (such as director/actor commentary) in a small display window while the movie is playing.
Dolby Digital/DTS Surround Decoding: The BD-H5900 has built-in Dolby Digital and DTS surround processors; multi-channel PCM Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD High Resolution, and DTS-HD Master Audio are output through the HDMI jack (when encoded on the Blu-ray Disc). The player must be connected to a Dolby Digital/DTS surround AV receiver which also supports these same formats via coaxial or HDMI input.
- Dolby Digital Plus: Dolby Digital Plus was developed as an extension to Dolby Digital. The audio coding technology supports 7.1 channel surround sound. Dolby Digital Plus also includes the standard Dolby Digital bit stream and is compatible with all current Dolby Digital processors using the coaxial digital output.

- DTS-HD Master Audio: DTS-HD Master Audio has a maximum transmission rate of 24.5 Mbps and uses lossless compression (Lossless), and DTS-HD Master Audio corresponds to a maximum sampling frequency of 192 kHz, and maximum of 7.1ch.

PCM Downsampling: This feature lets you choose to have 96kHz PCM signals downsampled to 48kHz before they are output to your AV receiver.
Downmixing Mode: This feature lets you select the multichannel downmix method that is compatible with your stereo receiver. You can choose to have the player downmix to normal stereo or to surround compatible stereo.
Dynamic Range Control: When movie soundtracks are played at low volume or from smaller speakers, the system can apply appropriate compression to make low-level content more intelligible and prevent dramatic passages from getting too loud. This is only active when a Dolby Digital signal is detected.
Digital Audio Output: The Blu-ray disc player features a digital coaxial (RCA) output. The player's audio menu allows you to select the digital audio format that is passed through the coaxial digital output; bitstream (Dolby Digital or DTS) or 2-channel PCM.
Note: The Blu-ray player provides no analog audio outputs.
Wired or Wireless Network Connection: You can set up the Samsung Blu-ray player so that it can access your home network and select online apps through your local area network (LAN) using a wired connection (RJ-45 Ethernet) or wireless connection (built-in WiFi). You can setup a wired network connection automatically or manually. You can setup the wireless network connection using these four methods; Automatic, Manual, WPS (PBC), or WPS (PIN). The Blu-ray player's built-in WiFi supports IEEE 802.11A/B/G/N wireless LAN networks and WEP (open/shared), WPA-PSK (TKIP/AES), or WPA2-PSK network security.

WiFi Direct: When using WiFi Direct, you can connect directly with other devices without using a wireless router. You'll be able to wirelessly transfer personal content (such as photos & videos) to the Samsung Blu-ray player without connecting to your home network. WiFi Direct completely bypasses your WiFi access point/router, so it's easy to set up. Streaming of copy-protected content and other certain formats are not supported.

AllShare Services: The Samsung Blu-ray player offers AllShare Cast screen mirroring and AllShare/DLNA wireless media streaming.
- AllShare Cast Screen Mirroring: AllShare Cast is a proprietary "screen mirroring" function which lets you wirelessly send the display from your compatible AllShare Cast Samsung mobile device through the Blu-ray player and to your TV. This allows you to view pictures and videos that are playing on your compatible Samsung smartphone or tablet on your TV screen. No wireless router or access point required.
- AllShare/DLNA Certified: The Samsung Blu-ray disc player's AllShare function, along with its DLNA Certification allow you to watch videos (MPEG), photos (JPEG), and listen to music (MP3/WMA) saved on your Windows 7/8 PC (or other DLNA Certified media server) through the TV via its Ethernet (LAN) port. This eliminates the need to copy your photo, video, and music files to a separate USB storage device.
Note: For AllShare/DLNA, Windows PCs with XP and Vista installed require Samsung's PC Share Manager software, which can be downloaded for free from the Samsung Download Center. Not compatible with older Windows OS versions and Mac.

Why did you buy this?
I was looking for a blue ray player and this was rated best in 2015. I chose Crutchfield because they were rated the best. [ Jeta Dec 07, 2015 ]
6 questions already asked
No, there is no digital optical output on the unit. You can hook it up to your receiver with a digital coaxial cable. That's what I did and it works fine. [ Robert Dec 06, 2015 ]
Rear panel has HDMI, LAN and Digital Audio (coaxial) out. Sorry, no digital optical. [ Teddy Dec 05, 2015 ]
Yes, as I recall I hooked it to my TV with HDMI cable and to the audio receiver (which is fairly old with no HDMI input/output) with digital optical cable for the audio. Either that, or I went to the TV with HDMI and then from the TV to the audio receiver with digital optical cable. Not in a position to check it at the moment. [ J Harper Dec 05, 2015 ]
NO. The BD-H5900 does not have optical audio output ...sorry. [ Marco Dec 05, 2015 ]
It does not have the Amazon app, so streaming content from Amazon is not possible. Thanks Joseph [ JOSEPH Mar 30, 2015 ]
Yes, it does. [ Thomas Mar 21, 2015 ]
YES [ Phil Mar 21, 2015 ]
I'm not quite sure what a region free player is, and since I do not own this unit I'm not able to answer your question. I would have to rely on the first answer by Scott A. as he seems to have had his unit for a year and it appears to be working fine for him. Robert S [ ROBERT Jan 29, 2015 ]
Yes, from what I have read this is a Region Free player. Absolutely love this player! Have had this for almost a year now, have had no complaints. Hope this helps. Scott [ Scott Jan 27, 2015 ]
sorry i don't even know what "region area" means [ JAMES A Jan 27, 2015 ]
You would need to purchase a coax digital to optical audio converter. Then you could connect it directly to an active or powered sound bar with optical inputs. You could not connect it to a passive or non powered sound bar without a receiver. [ DAVID Aug 06, 2015 ]
The only audio out of BD-H5900 is either through high-speed HDMI cable or coaxial cable. There is no optical signal output nor outlet for an optical audio cable. Moreover it could not be connected with speakers or sound bars without the assistance of an audio amplifier in between. [ GIO B Sep 16, 2014 ]
Sorry. We do not have access to FIOS. . [ ARIE Y May 14, 2014 ]
I only installed this machine less than a month ago ando not have much experience. Pictures are super. It did connect to FIOS internet flawlessly, and I suspect it will do what you ask. Keying in commands is a slow business, but I imagine all BD players have this handicap. Stay well, GBG [ GIO B May 14, 2014 ]
I haven't tried. I stream directly to my new Samsung 75H7150 TV using Verizon FIOS. [ Phil May 13, 2014 ]
No I have not tried to play a 4k bluray on this player. [ TERRY V Apr 23, 2014 ]
really don't know,sorry [ JAY Apr 22, 2014 ]
i haven't tried any 4k discs that is beyond my system capabilities [ JAMES A Apr 22, 2014 ]
