Our take on the Samsung BD-H6500

If you keep an eye on the trends, you know that the television manufacturers are releasing more and more 4K Ultra HD TVs. The Samsung BD-H6500 is prepared to handle this new format by upconverting Blu-ray and DVD video signals to a 4K display. But that's just the icing on the BD-H6500's feature-filled cake.

Ultra HD-ready

If you keep an eye on the trends, you know that the television manufacturers are releasing more and more 4K Ultra HD TVs. The Samsung BD-H6500 is prepared to handle this new format by upconverting Blu-ray and DVD video signals to a 4K display. But that's just the icing on the BD-H6500's feature-filled cake.

Get the most out of it right now

Samsung made sure this player will work nicely with your current 3D-capable HDTV and home theater setup. The BD-H6500 has all the top-of-the-line video and audio capabilities we enjoy today. Theater-like 3D experience when you pop in a 3D disc? Check. High-quality HD picture for standard Blu rays discs? You bet. Support for surround sound formats like Dolby® TrueHD and DTS-HD®? Check, and check again. You'll find it all here.

Beyond Blu-ray

Let's say the kids are tired of that Blu-ray disc they always watch. The BD-H6500 gives you options. Wirelessly connect to your home network via the built-in Wi-Fi and stream children's programming through Netflix®, Amazon Instant Video, Hulu®, or one of the numerous other available apps. Perhaps the kids are asleep, and you want to binge-watch an award-winning drama series or finally catch that movie everyone told you about. Just a few clicks of the remote, and you're streaming either on your screen. If you would prefer some music to unwind, choose from several streaming music apps. You can even connect wirelessly to a compatible networked PC via DLNA technology and play the tunes from your computer.

Beam images to your screen

Sometimes your phone screen is just too small for your task. Maybe you want to share a video or picture with a group of people. Wirelessly "push" the display to your TV's big screen through the BD-H6500. Miracast™ technology mirrors the screen of your compatible Samsung mobile device, tablet, or computer screen for everyone to see.

Samsung 4K + BD-H6500

SuZQ from Dallas, TX on 4/1/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I feel like "Dorothy" meets Technicolor -- moving up from cathode ray tube to Samsung 4K tv, buying HDMI cables, a soundbar with 2 tiny internal subwoofers putting out surprisingly deep sound, and this Samsung player that upscales my ordinary DVD collection to meet the 4K video display. Crutchfield's crack team recommended this BluRay model to match the 4K tv and my intended use of the system. The results are stunning. I marvel at visual frame composition rivaling Renaissance painters in depth and subtlety. 3D capability doesn't interest me, and yet even standard DVDs pop almost as if I'm viewing 3 dimensions instead of two. My tv is set for the Smart functions, and this BluRay becomes my stereo CD player since old components have died for all practical purposes. Combination of BluRay playing CD + soundbar with 2 subwoofers is surprising -- now I need a guru to lower the volume! This system is amazing and this BluRay does all I wanted and much more than I expected. Much to learn, but all I have seen and heard so far astonishes me. Crutchfield's team assisted with my choices based on both my intended use and budget limits. I am a very satisfied customer and don't hesitate to recommend this BluRay player.

Pros: Remarkable video images upscaled to 4K TV from ordinary used DVDs. Clear robust sound reproduction from DVDs and CDs. Sale priced.

Cons: Flimsy feel to the plastic case; would prefer front mounted controls though that round command disc set into the top is convenient for my use.

decent machine

Scott in WNY from buffalo, NY on 2/25/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I like this player. I have two other Samsung 3-D blue disc players. The load speed is fine, the output is pretty good. Yes the mass of this unit is low, but I doubt it hinders the laser tracking. I needed the 4k scaling for a Vizio 4k TV. Speaking of that, the remote has elementary TV control, but Vizio is not part of the products supported. Bad blood between Vizio and Samsung? Do take the time to update the firm ware. My player jumped up a few versions. The streaming works well.

Pros: A pretty good basic player. Easy to set up. It has a front panel display. Good load speed for discs and streaming. The remote with this player has a back light. The player plugs straight into an outlet, no wall wart. As always, great service from Crutchfield.

Cons: Minimal connections. Three of my other players offer two HDMI outs and/or RCA jacks for 7.1 for just a few dollars more, but I didn't need that for this application.

This is my first smart DVD player and I am very pleased with it

Frequent Disc Errors

EvoBob from New Jersey on 10/19/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Had to return because I couldn't get it to work for more than a few minutes. Every disc would play for about 5 minutes but then get unrecoverable disc errors. I put back my old Sony blu-ray and all discs worked fine. The controls on top are also impossible to see when placed in any kind of cabinet. We were always accidently turning machine on and off when trying to get to controls.

Pros: Small

Cons: Tempermental to disc errors, hard to see controls

Excellent Product and functions exactly as the description. Simple and straightforward operation. Used for DVD, Bluray and CD's.

Pros: Easy operation. Quiet. Fast loading. Small footprint. Beautiful output.

Cons: Would be somewhat easier to operate without remote if controls were placed on front of machine instead of the top.

Easy to set up, easy to update, and has a great picture even on older DVDs. I don't really like the top buttons, but I can live with it. I have not used the smart hub except for updates.

Pros: Easy set up, great picture on all DVDs, easily updated, anynet system control works well.

Cons: Top buttons are hard to see if it's on a shelf under the TV. Kind of cheap looking.

Great Blu-Ray Player

Chip from North Carolina on 7/5/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I definitely enjoy the quality and longevity of Samsung's products. Both of my tv's are Samsung; and late last year I purchased a lower model Samsung Blu-Ray player which has great color while using the proper HDMI cable. My wife is using it now; and she is pleased with it's ease of operation and picture quality. This BD-H6500 model only differs in that it upscales to 4k; and my new Samsung tv accommodates true 4k. When it came to price, Crutchfield was near some of its competition; however, Crutchfield's purchase terms, and the presence of their unlimited free techno staff for answers to questions, makes Crutchfield a number one choice for purchases. Don't be afraid of purchasing anything from Crutchfield. They stand behind their products; and most-importantly toward any later warranty experienced issues, they are an authorized dealer.

Pros: Frontal LED display window helps you know if this model machine is off or on. Unlike other Samsung lower or earlier model blu-ray players which only have a tiny green light on-the-top of the machine. You won't be confused with this machine. This machine works just fine in every way. Don't shy away from it because you view other 4k upscaled players and somehow believe that a good one should cost much more money. Netflix broadcasts just fine in 4k through this Blu-Ray.

Cons: Unless I am wrong by not initiating some proper setting, this machine neither displays the name and title of a CD song on the frontal display window nor on your tv screen. My car's display window does. Please take in account, that most people play DVD's and not CD's in their DVD player. I have used a DVD player and a powered pair of speakers, and/or the speakers in my tv, to play CD's since the mid-1990's. I believe only three DVD movies were available during that time. My CD player broke.

Better Than Expected

Spuds from Idaho on 7/2/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was so easy to set up! The on-screen prompts took me through every step quickly and effortlessly. And when everything was done, we had features and capabilities we weren't even expecting---like HuLu and the ability to stream Amazon Prime movies! And there are more features we haven't explored yet! As for dependability, well, we'll just have to see. In our experience, cost of a player doesn't seem to have any bearing on how long it lasts. But Consumer Reports gave this one top ratings---number two, right below Samsung's non-4K version of the exact same player! Samsung is highly rated for dependability in so many of its many products, from washing machines to TVs. A track record like that is no accident---much attention to quality is required at all levels of manufacturing. Only snag was that our previous player's digital audio output was via coax and this one's digital audio output is optical, (surprise). No biggie since our TV has digital audio out to the preamp/processor. Sounds great! This is our second Samsung BluRay player, (after a string of short-lived players from a once-dependable industry giant in Japan), and there's a reason we went for another Samsung. Admittedly, that's in part because it plays so well with our amazing-but-aging Samsung TV. I would recommend this player to anyone.

Pros: Price/value, included apps and features. Great interaction with Samsung "smart" TVs.

Cons: Might need to buy an optical cable if you don't have digital audio out from your TV to your preamp/processor.

Samsung Smart Bluray

Wild Bill from New Jersey on 6/20/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great BluRay player for the price. The wireless gave me smart TV capabilities which I didn't have on the set it was attached to. I had a problem connecting to Netflix but Samsung support updated my player remotely and all is good.

Pros: Lot's of capabilities, very easy to setup

Cons: need to use the remote for everything. there are some controls on top of the unit but not easy to use.

big bang for the buck

KenD from New Jersey on 6/14/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

For this low price, you just hope it works. And, it does. I wasn't ready to invest a lot on expensive equipment, but wanted to watch DVDs. Samsung BD-H6500 works just fine with my Vizio TV and soundbar. I haven't tried a Blueray disk, yet, and have no interest in 3D.

Pros: Low price, compact

Cons: Remember, this is an inexpensive product -- and it is dinky. As with all of these Samsung players, it's very hard to use without the remote. Everything is black with no visible buttons.

Samsung BD-H6500

Doug from Pennsylvania on 6/1/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is my second Samsung BluRay player (first being a BD-F5900) and I bought it to accompany a new Samsung 60" 4K TV (also from Crutchfield :-)). The new one performs very well -- fast loading, fabulous picture with DVDs or BDs, responsive controls (from the remote; I never use those on the player) and great "extras". This is what I expected given my experience with the 5900. It's also a piece of cake to set up and get going. The shape and finish look elegant. The downsides: 1) It is VERY light, almost seems flimsy; IF you attempt to use the controls on the player, it will move easily; it doesn't seem nearly as solid as my older Panasonic and LG BluRay players. I still have an older Sony DVD (pre-BD) player that is built like a tank. 2) While the finish is elegant, it is also easily scratched as the plastic casing is soft. I'm very careful when dusting it and I've had to advise my wife about how careful she needs to be when dusting (based on what I've seen with the 5900). Net, net, for the money, it is great performer (the most important factor for me), and it's nice to look at (just don't be surprised at how light it is).

Pros: Fabulous picture with DVDs and BDs; fast loading; easy set-up; great extras; elegant looks. Good value for the money.

Cons: Light weight build quality, finish easily scratched.

Samsung BD - H6500

Tom from Seaford, Delaware on 3/13/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

My old Blu-Ray player (expensive BIG well know brand) gave me many years of service, but skipped and froze up a lot when renting Netflix DVD's. They had to be new and flawless. However after connecting the Samsung up and playing a DVD I realized how far they have come with picture quality. The first DVD I played skipped a little in one place. My old player would have froze at that spot making me eject the disc. The picture is sharper with better colors and the audio also seems better. Startup for playing a disc is fast. My old player was quite slow. There is a setting for faster startup, but I doubt I'll ever need it. Setup was very easy. The lighted remote is very good. It does have an open and close button at the top. Crutchfield had it packaged safely and delivered it quickly. Would I buy this player again? Absolutely!

Pros: Very easy to set up. Excellent picture quality. Small size.

Cons: None

Great Center

Anonymous from Belmont ca on 2/8/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Have not had many center speakers, just lots of frustration trying to figure out dialogue with my ears that I have thrashed as a young adult. Movies are much more fun when you can hear what the characters are saying. An added bonus with this Polk series is listening to strings vibrate through them. I'm not a classical music kind if guy but I appreciate good sound. Now I surf pandora looking for anything a violin will make an appearance. If you think about it, string instruments usually have a wooden box to resonate the sound, and these Polks do the same as well. Strings usually create emotion in a movie, and this center definitely warms the heart during these moments in movies. I'm happy !! You will be too.

Pros: Dialogue is separated from other sound

Cons: Still looking

Works well, but some aesthetic and app issues

Frank from Northern Kentucky on 11/7/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I find that the ability of this player to play Blu-ray disks fully meets my expectations, with quick load speeds, fairly quiet operation, and great audio performance when played through the 5.1 surround system which I use in my home theater. I do, however, have two complaints: 1) the black plastic is very soft, and will develop scratches by just wiping it with a damp paper towel, even with a premium brand paper towel. Samsung really needs to use a harder grade of plastic for the case on this player. 2) the app organization is annoying and not flexible enough. At the Main Menu, the lower left hand corner is the "Recommended" apps section, which displays the first three apps in that list. To the right of it is "My Apps", which displays the first three apps in your custom list. To see the full lists, you press the Smart "Hub" button on the remote. The problem here is that the "Recommended" Apps cannot be added to, deleted, or reorganized. Only "My Apps" have that option. This is irritating., as it would make sense to have the apps which you use most frequently present at the Main Menu, rather than ones of no interest. The remote is small but functional. I have read reviews where people complain that there is no "Eject/Load" button, but that simply is not true. Those individuals must not read User's manuals. The Eject button is located directly beneath the Power button. It looks like an upward pointing "arrow".

Pros: Good load speed; good video and audio playback for the price

Cons: Cheap plastic case scratches extremely easily; app access lacks full customizability.

Good Blu-Ray with web browsing

GabrielO from Dallas on 10/30/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought the BD player primarily for the built-in Wi-Fi and the "full web browsing" capability. It was installed in a conference room so it would give us capability od displaying DVD, BD and PC connections. Connection to our network was easy, even though we have fixed ip address to all our devices, it was easy to setup the internet. First thing you need to do is an update, to be sure all apps work correctly. It took a good 1 hr to do the update. One of the other features it comes with is the ability to connect a wireless mouse and keyboard through the USB port. Neither Samsung or Crutchfield mentions which brands of keyboard will work. I connected a Microsoft 800 wireless keyboard and mouse and they worked perfectly. You can even connect a wired mosue to navigate within the browser and the menu options of the BD player. The browser is ok, but not very fast. If you are going to be doing a lot of browsing, you are probably better of connecting a laptop to your display. The BD player runs faster in browsing under a wired connection, than the wireless. I have not streamed movies long enough through the wi-fi to see the reliability of the connection, but so far so good.

Pros: Easy to set-up, compact in size, good options for sound and and video, fast start-up and easy connection to a wireless keyboard and mouse.

Cons: No live streaming APPS for news from Samsung. No coax digital out.

Nice little blu ray player

Anonymous from Milwaukee, WI on 10/20/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a small easy to use blu ray player that is simple to hook up. It easily connects to Pandora, Hulu etc. The 4k upscaling is decent on my 4k TV and a great feature on an inexpensive Blu Ray player. The only thing I would add is a clock on the front display when it is off, I miss my old one from my VCR (R.I.P. VHS)

Pros: Small, fast start up

Cons: No front display clock, Front display is low quality

Anonymous from Petaluma, ca on 9/21/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Old Samsung stopped playing Blu-Ray and it didn't have the ability to watch Amazon Prime directly on our TV. This one does all - super easy to set up and so far it's been great.

Pros: Plays Blu-Ray discs (of course) and best of all - Amazon Prime and others - super fast streaming

Cons: Buttons on the top of machine (circle dial) are hard to see since we store our device on a shelf. Generally use the remote so not a huge con.

Great Product--Excellent Value

GeeGee from Amissville on 9/10/2014

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The device is well-packaged in shipment, compact, with a detailed, but easy-to-understand instruction manual. The device is attractive and extremely functional, with setup exceptionally easy. Using the device is simple and straightforward. It simply works as one would imagine it should. I do have 2 complaints as to the design. These complaints were observed in other reviews I encountered elsewhere (during my own research). Those statements were accurate. The 2 issues are: a) the inability to eject the tray via remote, and b) the on-board controls placed on the top right hand corner of the unit. If you place the player in a cabinet (like I did), and if it sits on top of a stack of other components, make certain you've left enough space to reach in to operate the on-board controls. Because the on-board controls don't sit very "proud" of the unit's surface (meaning they don't stick out very far at all); they are almost imperceptible to feel, but are quite sensitive. Because my unit is on top of a stack that completely fills the cabinet space, I must actually grasp the unit and pull it out far enough to "see" the controls. If I don't do this, I will invariably hit the wrong control and usually (and inadvertently) turn the unit off instead of ejecting the tray. Samsung should have created an eject button on the remote. Perhaps a future firmware change might, somehow, allow two keys pressed at the same time on the remote to open the tray--failing that of having a dedicated button.

Pros: Excellent value in a small, inexpensive package

Cons: Cannot eject tray via remote; on-board controls placement can be an issue depending on location of unit.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Good picture and resolution. Inconsistent response time to remote commands, from immediate to 5 seconds and sometimes more - same command, same disc. A disc that was previously played was placed in the player and a message appeared that stated that the disc was not compatible; the disc was ejected, re-loaded and properly read and played. Once the unit would not respond to the eject disc command; the unit was shut off, re-started, and then responded properly.

Pros: Very good picture quality and resolution.

Cons: Inconsistent reaction time to controls; inconsistent play.

Video Section

HDMI ver.1.4: The Samsung Blu-ray player is equipped with an HDMI (v.1.4) output. HDMI simplifies A/V connections by carrying video and digital audio all in one cable. The HDMI output resolution can be set to 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i or 1080p when playing a DVD or Blu-ray Disc; also 1080/24p when playing a compatible BD.

1080/24p: Movies are typically filmed at 24 frames per second and some Blu-ray Discs use the same frame rate. If your TV will accept a 1080/24p signal, the BD-H6500 can pass the signal in its native form, without converting the video.

Note: The Blu-ray player provides no analog video or audio outputs.

4K Video Up-conversion: Upscale your favorite non-4K videos and films and enjoy them in 4K Ultra-HD (3,840 x 2,160) with this Samsung Blu-ray Player and your Ultra-HD TV. 4K provides four times higher resolution than current 1080p high-definition content. The unit also offers 720p, 1080i, and 1080p upscaling if your TV does not support Ultra-HD, but is Full-HD. It also supports 480p and 480i output if your television is not HD-compatible.

Note: To enjoy 4K, you must have a compatible 4K television connected to the Blu-ray player via HDMI.

Full HD 3D: The Samsung BD-H6500 3D Blu-ray disc player supports 3D playback of high-definition (1080p) 3D Blu-ray discs when connected to a 3D-Ready HDTV via HDMI, along with wearing a pair 3D vision glasses. You can select from three 3D modes to suit your viewing needs.

  • Auto: Automatically detects the 3D capability of your connected TV and play a 3D Blu-ray disc in 3D or 2D accordingly.
  • 3D-to-3D: 3D Blu-ray disc played in 3D mode regardless of your connected TV. When your connected TV does not support 3D, you may see a black screen.
  • 3D-to-2D: 3D Blu-ray disc is played in 2D image at all times. Choose this to view a 3D Blu-ray disc without 3D effect.

Progressive Mode: The Samsung Blu-ray disc player provides a Progressive mode to improve picture quality when viewing a DVD movie.

Deep/x.v. Color: Deep Color allows more accurate color reproduction with deep color depth. The BD-H6500 must be connected to a Deep Color compatible TV via HDMI for this feature to function. The BD-H6500 also supports x.v.Color; meaning it's ready for x.v.Color discs, such as AVCHD discs (MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 format).

TV Aspect:You can adjust the video output of the BD-H6500 to match the screen-type of your television. You can choose from 4:3 Letter-Box, 4:3 Pan-Scan, 16:9 Wide, and 16:9 Normal.

BD Wise: BD Wise is Samsung's latest inter-connectivity feature. When you connect Samsung products with BD-Wise to each other via HDMI, the optimum resolution will be set automatically.

Bonus View: The Bonus View feature provides picture-in-picture capability with select Blu-ray Disc titles. You can view addition content (such as director/actor commentary) in a small display window while the movie is playing.

Audio Section

Dolby Digital/DTS Surround Decoding: The BD-H6500 has built-in Dolby Digital and DTS surround processors; multi-channel PCM Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD High Resolution, and DTS-HD Master Audio are output through the HDMI jack (when encoded on the Blu-ray Disc). The player must be connected to a Dolby Digital/DTS surround AV receiver which also supports these same formats via Optical or HDMI input.

  • Dolby Digital Plus: Dolby Digital Plus was developed as an extension to Dolby Digital. The audio coding technology supports 7.1 channel surround sound. Dolby Digital Plus also includes the standard Dolby Digital bit stream and is compatible with all current Dolby Digital processors using the Optical digital output.
  • Dolby TrueHD: Dolby TrueHD is a lossless coding technology that supports up to 8 channels of multi-channel surround sound for the next generation optical discs. The reproduced sound is true to the original source bit-for-bit.
  • DTS-HD High Resolution Audio: DTS-HD High Resolution Audio supports a maximum sampling frequency of 96 kHz, and 7.1 multi-channel surround. DTS-HD High Resolution Audio has a maximum transmission rate of 6 Mbps, with a lossy compression.
  • DTS-HD Master Audio: DTS-HD Master Audio has a maximum transmission rate of 24.5 Mbps and uses lossless compression (Lossless), and DTS-HD Master Audio corresponds to a maximum sampling frequency of 192 kHz, and maximum of 7.1ch.

  • PCM Downsampling: This feature lets you choose to have 96kHz PCM signals downsampled to 48kHz before they are output to your AV receiver.
  • Downmixing Mode: This feature lets you select the multichannel downmix method that is compatible with your stereo receiver. You can choose to have the player downmix to normal stereo or to surround compatible stereo.
  • DTS Neo:6 Mode: You can enjoy multichannel sound via the HDMI output from a 2 channel audio source.
  • Dynamic Range Control: When movie soundtracks are played at low volume or from smaller speakers, the system can apply appropriate compression to make low-level content more intelligible and prevent dramatic passages from getting too loud. This is only active when a Dolby Digital signal is detected.
  • Audio Sync: In some cases when the player is connected to a TV, the audio signal may not synchronize with the video signal. If this occurs, adjust the audio delay time to match the video signal. You can set the audio delay time between 0 msec and 200 msec.

Digital Audio Output: The Blu-ray disc player features a digital Optical (toslink) output. The player's audio menu allows you to select the digital audio format that is passed through the Optical digital output; bitstream (Dolby Digital or DTS) or 2-channel PCM.

Note: The Blu-ray player provides no analog audio outputs.

SHAPE Multiroom Compatible: The Blu-ray Player easily integrates into Samsung'sSHAPE Muti-Room System (sold separately). To my knowledge, no. The supported stream services available include Netflix, M-Go, Amazon Video, and Bravo. The "SmartMenu" did not list Mhz Choice. This answer reflects the latest available firmware (i.e., 1112, dated 21 January, 2016).[ Sandra  Apr 02, 2016 ]
The player provides access to Samsung's App Store and MHz Choice is an available app there: I hope that helps! My Bio: [ Ryan  Apr 01, 2016 ]  Staff
I've never tried streaming MHz programs, but it should work because it apparently works on 2013 and newer Samsung smart tvs. The kicker though, is that MHz is discontinuing smart tv support on 4/1/2016. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.[ Brian David  Mar 31, 2016 ]
Michael, I don't understand your question, if you could explain it further. Are you asking about the remote control? It works like every other remote.[ Michael  Aug 20, 2015 ]
I Couldn't find any info in the manual regarding whether the remote is IR or RF, but when I tried operating it from an adjoining room it didn't work so I assume it's IR. Crutchfield has an IR repeater (Sanus ELM501) to be able to put your equipment in a hidden location as you're wanting to do. You should just connect it, and see what happens. I don't know that TV and didn't need to adjust anything with my BD-H6500. The player & TV work together to provide the right signal. I doubt you need to change any setting and if you do, all the features & spec's are on the remote.[ Michael  Dec 23, 2014 ]
