Overview

Our take on the Samsung BD-J5700

Easy to setup and operate.

Jeremy from Southfield, MI on 11/9/2017

Easy to setup and operate. The WiFi was easy to set up and have had no issues with streaming. Some have mentioned the remote is small and hard to use- it just takes a little getting used to if you had a bigger one before. It won't work with our Samsung TV but the TV is not exactly new (an older HD picture tube that has great picture and won't die). The lack of a power light is definitely annoying but not that big a deal.

Pros: Inexpensive and easy to use.

Cons: No power indicator light.

ok for the retail price

Pros: Good alternative for movie subscription Apps easy setup

Cons: no power led light cant tell if the unit is on or off freeze up during any updates had to unplug and reboot several times.

Decent, bad app choices

Jeffrey from Alexandria, LA on 7/21/2017

Decent player-- don't let the 250 plus apps on the box fool you. Sure netflix, hulu, --- but after the big 4; the Opera tv store "no smart hub" is just a collection of junk. No SEC network, no WWE network.

Pros: It works

Cons: Bad app choices

Small But MIGHTY Blu-Ray Deck

Blake from Moriarty, NM on 5/13/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I was skeptical but soon convinced I received a great deal! The price of this blu-ray player was exceptionally low. When the deck arrived it was smaller and lighter than my previous models. How could something less expensive, smaller and lighter than other devices of the same function be so simple to set up and use? Even the wifi kind of introduced itself in a friendly manner and just works without any fighting! This simple looking blu-ray player was well designed. It reads discs faster than my older decks (also Samsung). The lens is more forgiving if there is a spec of dirt on the disc. Now we're able to play some older discs without a fight. I subtracted the perfect score for one reason; It does have an occasional glitch in the picture for just a moment from time to time. The ease of set up is incredible and should be sued as a benchmark for all other devices. I like this little but powerful unit!

Pros: Easy to set up and use. Plays discs other decks will not read. Very small footprint. Incredible sound. Wifi easy to use even for dummies like me.

Cons: Occasional pixilation for a split second on some material.

Very disappointed there is no visible "on" indicator. Difficult to determine if unit is ready to use. Also user manual almost useless, will need to call for tech support as wireless network is recognized but will not connect and above mention user manual does not address. Does play DVDs nicely, but since we are still trying to figure out how to use other features, we cannot report further.

Gets the job done

Bart from Boulder, CO on 12/25/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

In a way, what's to review? These inexpensive players are simple, low-value devices. Hopefully its two manual switches (on/off, open/close) will solve the problem causing me to buy it-the failure of a two-year-old Samsung player's touch-sensitive controls circuitry. I had thought that the absence of an "on" LED would bug me but when the tray opens via remote you know all you need to. "Smart"-ness is overrated; who uses a Blu-Ray player to stream?

Lucky from AVL NC on 12/15/2016

Getting this unit for free is the only thing that would make me happier. It is so simple- Open the box; connect the wires; plug in; enter pass codes and WATCH. There were some negative reviews of this product that gave me pause..... Glad I ignored them. Maybe I was just lucky; I am. And happy with this purchase. Why not 5 stars? 4 is a top rating. Something has to be extra special for 5 stars. This unit was cheap and works. I didn't pay for extra special.... got just what I paid for. (Luck helps sometimes)

Great Picture, and media server

Wilton S. from Suffolk, VA on 9/25/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Pristine picture from blu ray playback. DLNA server works well. All my devices are hardwired no wifi. Would be great if it also had component output so I wouldn,t have to go thru a splitter for hdmi, but I don't seem have any picture quality issues. A power led indicator would be great for on identification.

Cons:

Works well, but very basic

Thomas from Highland Lakes, NJ on 6/29/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Works well but a very basic machine. Only two very hard to see buttons, no on light. It was cheap and I assume will only be used for a few years before discs are totally obsolete

Pros: Good picture, fast loading, does what it needs to do. Inexpensive. I may be one of the few that likes the unusual design, looks good if you need to see it on top of a cabinet, small body.

Cons: Only two closely spaced buttons, impossible to see (eject and on, you'll hit the one you don't want), no ON light makes it a bit confusing.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Product is good. Still in the early process of using but as of this time I have no issues. I agree with everyone that has said it would be nice for it to have a light to know it is on, but otherwise it does its job.

Pros: It works like it is suppose to

Cons: No light indicator.

Blu-ray/Netflix player

Steve from New York on 1/1/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Bought two for the WiFi capabilities, Only one would connect using WiFi. The other I was able to connect using a network cable to an extra Sonos bridge that I wasn't using. Luckily it worked otherwise I would have returned it. Navigation on the web is a little slow for both. Overall happy with purchase's.

Pros: Small footprint, great price, good picture.

Cons: Week WiFi connection, No "Power On" indicator.

I like this unit

G. Meyer from Georgia on 12/18/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this so that we can more easily stream Netflix onto a non-smart Plasma TV. It connects well to the WiFi and the menu is easily understandable. DVD look great and it integrates well with the Samsung TV. The four star rating is due to the plain menu and some of the slightly cumbersome navigation. A simple Netflix button on the remote would have been great.

Pros: Works great

Cons: Slightly cumbersome menu, but still easy to navigate

Buggy

Eddy from Georgia on 12/12/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Like most recent Samsung products, If you try to use the smart feature they fall on their face. This dumb thing won't connect automatically to the network. You have to go into the network settings every time you want to use one of the apps like Vudu or Amamzon. C'mon guys, this is 2015. An IP stack shouldn't present a challenge.

Pros: Great player for Blu-ray. Starts and loads disks quickly.

Cons: The networking is buggy and that makes it a pain to use any of the apps. The DLNA client is a joke.

Great Price But With Some Drawbacks

ChrisH from New Jersey on 10/31/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The price was great for this Blu-Ray DVD player. However, I do not like that there is no power button visible on the unit. Everything is on-screen.

Pros: Very nice picture on regular DVDs. Haven't tried Blu-Ray as yet.

Cons: No visible buttons on outside of unit. It is hard to tell if the tray is open or closed without walking over to it.

Poptart from New York on 10/13/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a great little device.. compact and does its job. The only thing is that there is no light display to indicate that the player is on or off. Other than that, I would highly recommend this one!

Pros: compact

Cons: no light display

Samsung BD-J5700

MB from Texas on 10/2/2015

A good basic player. We purchased this due to our old unit not being compatible with the current Blue Ray disks and hoped to benefit from the wireless feature. As others have stated the WiFi is weak and I did resort to running a wired network to it.

Pros: Cost, Compatibility with current standards for disks

Cons: WiFi not usable

Samsung BG-J5700

BK from New York on 9/25/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Easy to use and setup. Pretty basic player with wifi. Wifi reception seems to be a little weak, have to open the cabinet door in order to get good streaming whereas my Roku works fine with the door closed. No display makes it simpler, but hard to tell if it's on or what you're doing without onscreen

Pros: Simple and easy to use. Does the job as a player.

Cons: Wifi reception could be better. Signal is weak when the class door is closed on my cabinet.

Samsung BD-J5700

Dana from Wisconsin on 8/31/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall the Blu-Ray does what it is supposed to - basic - straight forward - good price point for the features. Out of the box set up was plug and play - easy to configure and I was up and running within 15 min of opening the box. The performance has been good not only with Blu-rays and Dvd's but also inputs from Thumbdrives as well as WIFI Netflix and Amazon Prime. One frustrating feature is the unit itself - the box I should say. There is no "on light" so you never know if its on or off. Second the button configurations on the actual unit are not real easy to see or use. For this reason I have settled that I will always us the remote.

Pros: Easy to configure. Easy to use "with remote" that is.

Cons: Hard to use without remote. No "on" illumination.

Terrific BluRay for the price!

Gerry from Seagrove Beach Florida on 8/16/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I need a new BluRay in my gym for workout DVDs and the old DVD/VHS gave up. I saw this and there was 15% discount coupled with a whole bunch of Crutchfield points from purchasing my Bose Lifestyle® 135 Series III. Fantastic deal. Basic but solid BluRay. Delivered quickly and packaged well. Thanks Crutchfield!

Pros: Connects easily, works well lots of features for the price.

Cons: No power light.

I'd buy again

Steve from Knoxville,Tennessee on 8/4/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this player to occupy my time while recovering from surgery in my bedroom. Since this would not be used much after the period, I didn't want to spend much and no need for 3D. This was the perfect selection. In spite of a few issues, this far exceeded my needs and expectations. I am so satisfied with it, that I am going to move it to my TV in the basement for the grandkids to use.

Pros: Great price Simple set-up All the Smart features, ie Netflix, etc Simple to use Great picture

Cons: No power light is an pain, but not a deal breaker The remote can only change the input source on the TV if the TV is a Samsung. I may be wrong. Not a big deal, since you have to go to the TV anyway to insert the disk, and my source bottom on the TV is readily accessible.

Does everything as advertised. Used it with wifI for Amazon instant video. Great picture with no problems.

Pros: Easy to use.

Cons: No power on light.

Netflix, and others easy to use.

MikeS from Ohio on 6/11/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The device is much better than the interface on our Smart TV. If you have your wireless router really overloaded, it does struggle a lot. Ex. College kid streaming music and XBoxOne.

Pros: Small, user friendly interface, quick response.

Cons: Not having the power light is annoying, stupid oversight in the design.

Is it one or off

Dennis D from South Dakota on 5/7/2015

Excellent picture and easy set up--but where is the on indicator.

Pros: Easy to set up and great picture.

Cons: Come on Samsung--invest in a little on/off indicator.

Does an excellent job

Rivergoat from Santa Cruz CA on 4/21/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Quiet, efficient, plays DVD and Blu-ray well, and has built-in apps.

Pros: Easy to set up and use

Cons: Lack of power light on the front, as others have noted. Not easy to tell if the unit is powered on or not.

Samsung without lights

Jason from Wisconsin on 4/14/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Overall, it's difficult to argue with a great brand name product that does exactly as it should. My only pitfall for this player is that it doesn't have any indicator lights on the front of the unit. That makes it impossible to know if the unit is even on or not. It plays Blu Rays and does a great job, and I've never had an issue with quality when it comes to Samsung. I only question why they didn't build in any indicator lights or displays on this model.

Pros: Great price, great brand, and does everything it's supposed to.

Cons: No light on the front panel makes it difficult to know if you have the unit on or off. I prefer to turn off my electronics when they are not in use, so that feature would have been much appreciated.

Execellent Player

Rich from Florida on 4/9/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Good product.

Pros: Easy to use menu

Cons: No power light, really? The only way I can tell if it's on is to use the remote and look at my TV screen.

Excellent DVD Player

CapeCodder from Massachusetts on 3/29/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Instantly connected with my Samsung TV and the WiFi network. Very easy setup and fantastic pictures from regular home made DVDs. Love the ability to also play these videos with the USB connection. Found I can only have one type of file on the USB drive. Wouldn't pick out a .mp4 file from a host of other extensions. No Biggy.

Pros: Easy setup. Great pictures. Doesn't appear flimsy.

Cons: Needs more "stick" to the feet. Slides around too easily on top of another component.

  • 1080/24p: Movies are typically filmed at 24 frames per second and some Blu-ray Discs use the same frame rate. If your TV will accept a 1080/24p signal, the BD-J5700 can pass the signal in its native form, without converting the video.
  • 4:4:4 Max Color Subsampling: The Blu-ray player's HDMI output will support up to 4:4:4 chroma subsampling for full color data rendering of high-definition video.
Note: The Blu-ray player provides no analog video outputs.

The unit also supports 480p and 480i output if your television is not HD-compatible. The Samsung Blu-ray disc player also provides a Progressive mode to improve picture quality when viewing a DVD movie.

Deep Color: Deep Color allows more accurate color reproduction with deep color depth. The BD-J5700 must be connected to a Deep Color compatible TV via HDMI for this feature to function.

Video Settings: The Samsung Blu-ray disc offers a variety of video adjustments to fine tune the TV's picture image.

  • TV Aspect: You can adjust the video output of the BD-J5700 to match the screen-type of your television. You can choose from 16:9 Original, 16:9 Full, 4:3 Letter Box, and 4:3 Pan-Scan.
  • Picture Adjustments: This function enables you to adjust video quality when the player is connected to your TV.

PCM Downsampling: This feature lets you choose to have 96kHz PCM signals downsampled to 48kHz before they are output to your AV receiver.

Downmixing Mode: This feature lets you select the multichannel downmix method that is compatible with your stereo receiver. You can choose to have the player downmix to normal stereo or to surround compatible stereo.

You can paus and restart, but if you pause then turn off the device, it does not know where to restart based on where you paused it. [ CATHY  May 15, 2015 ]
Yes. [ carol  May 14, 2015 ]
If you pause the movie, it will restart there, even if the player has been turned off. However, it is my understanding from other users, that, if you take the disk out, it will not remember. You need a more expensive model. [ Susan  May 14, 2015 ]
Hi Bill, I really don't know the answer to your question. We have a bed and breakfast and the Samsung was one of two new TVs purchased for our B&B. I will say that a couple of our guests have commented on how nice the Samsung is but I only watched it briefly when hooking it up. It has a great picture. I will try to find a time to go in to that suite and check the function you asked about - if you want to ask the question again at a later date I will be happy to answer it then. Just to clarify - are you talking about when playing a DVD? [ BARBARA A  May 14, 2015 ]
Bill, I don't know. I bought it because I thought there was a jack for a headset on the back. There wasn't, so I had to return it, unfortunate because I wasn't able to access its many possibilities without that one need of mine. If it were me with your question, I would call the advisors at Crutchfield. They were exceptionally helpful for me. James [ James  May 14, 2015 ]
