Solid picture and sound for movies, shows, and music

The BD-J5900 makes sure your picture — two- or three-dimensional — looks crisp and clear on your high-definition TV. Blu-ray titles play in 1080p HD, and video upconversion breathes new life into standard DVDs. You'll open up the capabilities of your home theater speakers as well — lossless surround sound formats are supported, including Dolby® TrueHD and DTS-HD®.

Want to throw on some tunes? Play a CD, stream from a music service like Pandora®, or wirelessly connect to a compatible networked PC via DLNA technology and play songs from your computer.

Project images to your screen

While newer phones are getting harder to cram into pockets, sometimes the screens still aren't large enough for certain tasks. Maybe you want to share a video or picture with a group of people. Wirelessly "push" the display to your TV's big screen through the BD-J5900. Allshare™, Samsung's take on Miracast™ technology, mirrors the screen of your compatible mobile device, tablet, or computer screen for everyone to see.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I would give this 0 stars if this was an option. Nothing but a piece of junk. I have used it once and won't do anything now. Samsung no help at all. Spent over an hour on the phone. Never again......

Pros: None

Cons: waste on money

Great DVD player

Robert from Pflugerville, TX on 1/9/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have been a Sony fan for years, but the last two DVD players I purchased were junk. Neither player would setup the internet although they were marketed as built in WiFi. Both went back for refunds from another vendor. I saw this unit on Crutchfield's website so I took a chance and purchased it. It worked perfectly out of the box. It only took five minutes to totally setup including WiFi. I am planning to purchase another unit within the next couple of months and it will be from Crutchfield's.

Pros: Super fast setup including WiFi

Cons: None

Very simple unit with great quality.

james from Parkersburg, WV on 10/3/2016

This a very nice unit. Easy to set-up and use. It is hard to believe that it can be made so small. It works great!

Pros: Simplicity

Steven J from Elma, WA on 6/17/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am very pleased with what this player offers in terms of versatility and with ease of use.

Pros: The unit has more options than any I was able to purchase before.

Cons: I still have to figure out how to switch from using the two remote controls for the TV and the BluRay.

Simple is beautiful

Derek from Ft Walton Beach, FL on 5/21/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Very nice piece of equipment. I bought two and connected them both to Samsung TVs (I find that it just works better when you connect the same brands)

Pros: Price

Cons: I do wish it had some form of display, but it is on the TV, so just different now, that's all.

Plays Blu-rays well, but no Plex support

Steve from Centennial, CO on 3/13/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Plays Blu-rays well, and feels much speedier than previous models when navigating menus. However, I have had two other Samsung Blu-ray players, and both supported Plex, so I incorrectly assumed this one would too. Plex is missing from this box. This was a factor in my purchase, otherwise I would have given a higher rating.

Pros: Plays Blu-rays well - much faster than previous models.

Cons: No Plex app. The complete lack of any indicator lights will take some getting used to.

Quick and Smooth Set-up

Eagle727 from clearwater, FL on 3/5/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Set up to our older (non-smart) Samsung TV was amazingly quick and smooth. The Blu-Ray allowed us easy access via WiFi to NetFlix.

Pros: Set-up was quick.. Access to WiFi was easy.

Cons: No indicator lights.

Pros: small, great picture, easy network setup

Cons: none

Works just fine, hard to tell if it's on (no indicator lights)

Kelle from Dayton OH on 2/1/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

So far, it seems to work fine. I am using it to be able to get to the internet on my older tv, and it works fine for that. I am guessing it will play a DVD fine also. My only complaint is that there are no indicator lights, so it is really difficult to tell if it is or isn't powered on (I actually thought it was broken at first because I couldn't tell it had powered on)....It is very, very basic (but, it is also a great price, soooooooo....) Would probably buy again, unless I found a similar one with indicator lights.

Pros: price, small footprint, easy to use

Cons: no indicator lights

Samsung BD-J5900

Anonymous from Tennessee on 10/23/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

High quality playback. I have a Panasonic Plasma I bought at Crutchfield, and I can say with a certainty that this player produces a detailed, clean picture with excellent colors. I bought this to be a throwaway player because my first player ( a Yamaha) and second player (a Panasonic) would not update. A few people have noted that this player has no 'on/off' light and the remote is small and a little cumbersome, and the player body is small to the point where you can't put other electronics on top of it. That's all true. For the price, I think the tradeoff is in getting better electronics for a better picture.

Pros: A good value.

Cons: It's not free.

Cons: None

Samsung BD-J5900

TucsonJim from Arizona on 7/17/2015

Another online retailer sells this unit for less and a local big box store has a price guarantee to not sell any higher so don't feel pressured by Crutchfield's fire sale warning that their higher price will be going up tomorrow. Neither Crutchfield's "expert" nor Samsung could tell me about the unit's support for Plex. Good thing you can try them out at locally before making a purchase (at the lowest price possible)... well, with Plex Pass. For better audio (assuming you've spent at least a couple grand for better audio equipment) you might want to consider the Samsung BD-J7500 for $250 or the OPPO BDP-103 for $500 (but you'll need a Roku 2 for Plex). You have to sit no more than 6 feet from a 50-inch screen (assuming you have 20/20 vision) in order to see 1080p -- thus, 4k resolution is a joke (CNET says "quadruple the pixels makes no difference in picture quality and are not worth the extra price").

Pros: Very small, great picture, DLNA, and USB 2.0 for movie drive and easy mirroring of cell phones make this the current best Blu-ray player for the money (however much you spend). It's a 2-channel device (yes, only stereo) that supports Dobly Digital and DTS sound technology. I prefer the higher speed of the Ethernet port (for local uncompressed video streaming) but of course it has Wi-Fi.

Cons: No display (not even a power LED), easy to accidentally hit buttons, only stereo, curved so nothing can go on top of this, initially fewer streaming choices from switching from the proprietary and crude Smart Hub to the open and fancy Opera Software, cheaper players support more file formats, and there's a higher price at Crutchfield. Except for the 2-channel part, none of this bothers me.

Samsung Blu-ray

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Exactly what I needed in a DVD player. I wasn't looking for any of the "extras" available as I already have a Samsung Smart TV. This device seamlessly connected to the TV and provides excellent picture.

Straight forward...easy setup

Steve R from Wisconsin on 5/7/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Setup went quickly and the unit immediately found our WiFi system and connected simply by entering our passcode. Within a few days an update was downloaded and that went well also. Picture quality is very good and the remote is effective and has nice features.

Pros: All is well

Cons: I have no serious cons. The unit is smaller that I expected and you can't stack other components on top of it.

Worked great!

Note: Like DVD, BD uses region codes. The region code on your disc must match the region code on your player, otherwise the disc will not play. This Blu-ray player is region A and DVD region 1. Blu-ray Disc uses the Advanced Access Content System (AACS) to prevent unauthorized recording of copyrighted material.

Firmware/Software Upgrade: As Blu-Ray technology continues to evolve, new disc types with enhanced functionality will become available. In order for you to enjoy this new functionality, you will likely be required to update the firmware in your player. These firmware updates will become available for downloading from the Internet. The player's Software Upgrade menu allows you to upgrade the player's software & firmware for these performance improvements & additional services. You can upgrade via Network or USB.

Note: Visit the Samsung Download Center for the latest Firmware/Software updates.

USB Port: The Samsung Blu-ray disc player features a front-panel USB (type-A) port that allows playback of a variety music files, photo files, and video files stored on a USB mass storage class device. Your USB device must be formatted in FAT16, FAT32, or NTFS. The USB port also allows you to perform software upgrades using a USB flash drive. In addition, it can be used to add more local storage for BD-Live content.

Note: A USB device consuming more than 500mA requires a separate power supply device for normal operation.

Video Section

HDMI 1.4: The Samsung Blu-ray player is equipped with an HDMI (v.1.4) output. HDMI simplifies A/V connections by carrying video and digital audio all in one cable. The HDMI output resolution can be set to 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i or 1080p when playing a DVD or Blu-ray Disc; also 1080/24p when playing a compatible BD.

  • 1080/24p: Movies are typically filmed at 24 frames per second and some Blu-ray Discs use the same frame rate. If your TV will accept a 1080/24p signal, the BD-J5900 can pass the signal in its native form, without converting the video.
  • 4:4:4 Max Color Subsampling: The Blu-ray player's HDMI output will support up to 4:4:4 chroma subsampling for full color data rendering of high-definition video.
Note: The Blu-ray player provides no analog video outputs.

Video Up-conversion + Progressive Mode: When connected to your TV using the HDMI output, the BD-J5900 scales the output of a standard DVD signal to HD-compatible 720p, 1080i, or 1080p. The unit also supports 480p and 480i output if your television is not HD-compatible. The Samsung Blu-ray disc player also provides a Progressive mode to improve picture quality when viewing a DVD movie.

Full HD 3D: The Samsung BD-J5900 3D Blu-ray disc player supports 3D playback of high-definition 3D Blu-ray discs when connected to a 3D-Ready HDTV via HDMI, along with wearing a pair 3D vision glasses. You can select from three 3D modes to suit your viewing needs.

  • Auto: Automatically detects the 3D capability of your connected TV and play a 3D Blu-ray disc in 3D or 2D accordingly.
  • 3D-to-3D: 3D Blu-ray disc played in 3D mode regardless of your connected TV. When your connected TV does not support 3D, you may see a black screen.
  • 3D-to-2D: 3D Blu-ray disc is played in 2D image at all times. Choose this to view a 3D Blu-ray disc without 3D effect.

Deep Color: Deep Color allows more accurate color reproduction with deep color depth. The BD-J5900 must be connected to a Deep Color compatible TV via HDMI for this feature to function.

Video Settings:  The Samsung Blu-ray disc offers a variety of video adjustments to fine tune the TV's picture image.

  • Screen Size: You can enter the actual screen size (up to 116") of your TV, so that the player can adjust the image according to the screen size and display an optimal image.
  • TV Aspect: You can adjust the video output of the BD-J5900 to match the screen-type of your television. You can choose from 16:9 Original, 16:9 Full, 4:3 Letter Box, and 4:3 Pan-Scan.
  • Picture Adjustments: This function enables you to adjust video quality when the player is connected to your TV.

    • Movie: Suitable for watching movies.
    • Dynamic: Increases sharpness.

Bonus View: The Bonus View feature provides picture-in-picture capability with select Blu-ray Disc titles. You can view addition content (such as director/actor commentary) in a small display window while the movie is playing.

Audio Section

The player must be connected to a Dolby Digital/DTS surround AV receiver which also supports these same formats via Coaxial or HDMI input.

Digital Output/Surround Mode Chart: You can set the unit's Digital Output (HDMI or Coaxial) to match the capabilities of your connected AV receiver.

Disc Type Audio Stream PCM Bitstream (Unprocessed) Bitstream (Re-encode)

PCM Downsampling: This feature lets you choose to have 96kHz PCM signals downsampled to 48kHz before they are output to your AV receiver.

Downmixing Mode: This feature lets you select the multichannel downmix method that is compatible with your stereo receiver. You can choose to have the player downmix to normal stereo or to surround compatible stereo.

Dynamic Range Control: When movie soundtracks are played at low volume or from smaller speakers, the system can apply appropriate compression to make low-level content more intelligible and prevent dramatic passages from getting too loud. This is only active when a Dolby Digital signal is detected.

Digital Audio Output: The Blu-ray disc player features a digital coaxial (RCA) output. The player's audio menu allows you to select the digital audio format that is passed through the coaxial digital output; bitstream (Dolby Digital or DTS) or 2-channel PCM.

Note: The Blu-ray player provides no analog audio outputs.

Network/Internet Functions

Note: Online applications and content are subject to change without notice.

AllShare Connectivity: The Samsung Blu-ray player allows wireless integration with your wireless network devices via AllShare Cast and AllShare DLNA.

  • AllShare Cast: AllShare Cast is a proprietary "screen mirroring" function which lets you wirelessly send the display from your compatible AllShare Cast Samsung mobile device to the Blu-ray player and your connected TV. This allows you to view pictures and videos that are playing on your compatible Samsung smartphone or tablet on your TV screen. No wireless router or access point required.
  • AllShare DLNA: The Samsung Blu-ray disc player's AllShare function, along with its DLNA Certification allow you to watch videos (MPEG), photos (JPEG), and listen to music (MP3/WMA) saved on your Windows PC (or other DLNA Certified media server) through the TV via its Ethernet (LAN) port or built-in WiFi (wireless).
