NFL and Samsung

Samsung was one of the first TV makers to master DLP™ (Digital Light Processing) and continues refine this remarkable display technology. The HL-R5067W is truly a bundle of innovations, inside and out. The "floating screen" styling is a new look for Samsung — note the narrow gap separating the screen and base. The black bezel that frames the screen makes the TV's razor-sharp images really pop.

Deep inside this set is one of Texas Instruments' latest DLP image chips. This chip replaces the three picture tubes used in old-style big-screen TVs. A single chip means that precise image focus is locked in; it will never drift out of alignment and require adjusting. The other parts of Samsung's "light engine" include the optics, projection lamp, and a high-speed color wheel. Together, they create bright, crisp, filmlike images with rich, robust colors.

This "Digital Cable Ready" HDTV can receive over-the-air and cable HDTV programming without a separate tuner box. (To get the most from the TV's built-in cable tuner, you'll need a CableCARD™ from your local provider.) The built-in TV Guide On Screen program guide means you don't have to hunt for the newspaper listings to find out what's on. The TV automatically downloads 8 days' worth of channel listings for your local broadcast and cable stations, and displays them in an easy-to-navigate color-coded on-screen grid. There's no monthly fee, and no phone connection is needed.

The HL-R5067W has an extremely flexible, future-ready "jack pack." For high-res sources, you're covered both for now and in the future, with two HD-compatible component video inputs, an HDMI input, plus two digital IEEE 1394 ports for high-def playback and recording. The standard PC input lets this set double as an oversized computer monitor. It's perfect for that job because DLP TVs are totally immune to screen burn-in.

Review - Part 1

prakash from Flower Mound, TX on 3/6/2006

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After waiting and reading reviews for this TV for more than 6 months, I finally decided to buy it. The only thing that was holding me back was the fact that the Dish Network Receiver I had was not High Definition and I felt that the image would be too grainy and fuzzy to be acceptable. After watching this TV for a week, I feel that I should not have waited for this reason to buy this TV.

The box that contains the TV has a red colored Drop N Tell indicator. If the arrow on it is Blue in color, it means that the box has NOT been kept straight during shipment. I read some reviews somewhere that indicated that the color wheel will not work properly if the arrow turns Blue and that you will have to get Samsung to come and fix it for you. I was disappointed that the guys who delivered my TV had no clue about this. I am not sure why Crutchfield does not make sure the Delivery company knows about this. The delivery guys had opened the box before I could see this indicator, so I would advise anyone reading this to make sure that the delivery guys place the box on the floor and only after you see this indicator, let them open the lid of the box.
Samsung 50

Rohada from Raleigh, NC on 2/10/2006

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I compared the equivalent SONY 50" with this Samsung and could not see a significant difference that would warrant an additional $. Very pleased with the picture and the contrast. The HD channels are incredible. This is our first big screen TV and we are very happy with it. Even the sound is considerably better than I expected. It's hard to gauge such things in a large electronics store. In my house the TV sits in a rather large room (12 foot ceilings and wood floors) and the sound is such that a surround sound system is not absolutely necessary for viewing pleasure. I may install one later just to make the package complete.

I like the size and the design of the TV. I have it coupled to a DVR and a DVD/VCR combo. The TV allows you to scroll directly to each component via the DVR remote, even separating the DVD and the VCR screens, for quick interchange between the HDTV and the DVD and the VCR. Navigating to the appropriate DVD/VCR screens for viewing is even simplier than it was with our standard CRT and set top digital cable box.

I really have no complaints about this TV. I would consider myself an average viewer with respect to sharpness, contrast, color, tint, etc. If you want motion picture production quality, then buy something else. If you want a strong value for a TV that easily keeps pace with SONY, then buy this Samsung.

My Crutchfield customer service advisor, the electronics store salesperson, and the man who delivered the TV all have Samsung HDTV's. If I had to do it all over, I would buy this TV from Crutchfield again.

Sweet TV

Brian from Odenton, MD on 1/8/2006

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I searched high and low for the right tv for me. I decided on this one. I am very impressed with the picture quality and sound. I have a Sony LCD HDTV also. When I compared the picture quality and sound side by side, this one blew the Sony away. The colors are sharp and the blacks are black. Best picture I have seen on tv and it doesnt hurt that the TV practically sets itself up.

Totally Satisfied with the HL-R5067W

David Collie from Biloxi, MS on 12/31/2005

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After Hurricane Katrina, it was time to start fresh and do it right. I researched Big Screen TVs, looked up reviews, and decided on the Samsung line of DLPs (rear screen projection with a Texas Instruments chip). Juggling features against budget, I chose the HLR5067W 50" Widescreen High Def DLP TV.

I checked Crutchfield prices against other online sources and local retailers. I found them to be equal or better in price and, with the savings due to free shipping (!!!), they had the best price overall. At this point, my only concern was receiving the unit in good working order and whether I would be able to return it if there were any problems.

Having dealt with Crutchfield in the past, I was not worried about returns. When it arrived a very short time later, the delivery guys actually came into the house, unpacked it, and helped me set it up. I even offered them a beer and a seat to watch the game! but they declined.

Later I compared my purchase to other models locally. I found that the higher resolution models (Cinema SmoothT Gen-6 1080p Light Engine as opposed to 720p) were, indeed, way better. However, I just could not afford the additional $1250 cost. For now, I am content that I made the best possible purchase for my budget and I'm hoping that the higher res models will drop in price.

If you purchase this TV you won't be disappointed. You may even save enough to get one of their great deals on a Surround Sound system. If you do, remember to run all video cables directly from their source to the TV and sound only through the A/V unit. Mine has a smart remote included and it is the only one I use for all my separates! Thanks Crutchfield!

Outstanding DLP but was defective

Cpt. Kaos from Orlando, FL on 11/7/2005

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The picture on this tv is outstanding. However, it had a defective DMD (Digital Micro-Mirror Device) out of the box. One (or maybe a group of) of the mirrors that projects the picture was occasionally freezing, leaving a white spot on a black background. Samsung customer service was outstanding. Very short wait time on the phone and offered to send a tech out to replace the DMD. I was not comfortable with someone opening up my brand new tv, so I contacted Crutchfield and they agreed to exchange it with no hassle what-so-ever. It was the combination of customer service from both Samsung and Crutchfield that led me to agree to an exchange and give this tv a five star rating.

Inputs and Outputs Notes

CableCARD Slot: This TV has a back panel CableCARD slot that allows digital cable reception without a set-top box. CableCARDs will be available from your local cable provider.

HDTV (ATSC) Tuner: The TV has a built-in over-the-air HDTV (ATSC) tuner, so you don't have to purchase a separate digital set-top box to receive and decode over-the-air HDTV/SDTV signals.

DLP Projection System: DLP (Digital Light Processing) technology by Texas Instruments is the only display solution that enables projection systems to create a purely digital connection between a digital video or graphic source and the screen in front of you. While all other technologies are analog and compromise some image quality in translation, DLP projection unleashes the full potential of high-quality video content.

Cinema Smooth 720p Light Engine: Samsung's Cinema Smooth 720p light engine creates an image with no visible pixel structure and accurate shading and better low-light detail.

Next Generation DLP Chip: The new-generation microdisplays have switching speeds twice as fast as previous generations and up to 1,000 times faster than competing microdisplay technologies. When combined with Samsung's new Cinema Smooth 720p light engine, the result is a crisp, bright picture with deep, rich colors that are closer to film.

Fast Color Wheel: Samsung's 2.6" color wheel spins at 10,800 rpm for smooth fast-motion video, and has seven color segments for more accurate colors. It achieves film-like transitions without pixel breakup found in slower color wheel designs and slower switching LCD microdisplays.

Digital Natural Image Engine (DNIe): Samsung's exclusive Digital Natural Image engine makes the sharpest and clearest images possible, regardless of the profile of input signals. Five image processors and a six-times density enhancer ensure the best picture from any source:

 • Six-times Density Enhancer: displays extremely high-resolution pictures that are six times as dense as the original sample rate for sharper images

 • Motion Optimizer: fast-moving images are optimized to produce more natural-looking motion, thus reducing video noise or blurring

 • Contrast Enhancer: brightness and contrast levels are enhanced for deeper, richer blacks with greater detail, and more natural whites

 • Detail Enhancer: DNIe analyzes video signal elements in order to produce sharper detail, clearer image separation and more natural edge transition

 • Color Optimizer: colors are reproduced with a more lifelike realism, whites are more accurate, and skin tones are given a more natural hue

 • My Color Control: you can get the pink tones, the green of the grass and the blue of the sky just the way you like, without affecting the other colors on the screen. The three major colors can be adjusted to perfectly fit your taste.

Cinema Mode: Samsung's Cinema Mode lets you see colors the way the director intended, by matching them more closely to production standards. This creates more accurate colors and natural skin tones when viewing Hollywood movies on your TV.

Cinema Smooth Film Mode 3:2 Pull Down: Powered by Samsung's Cinema Smooth technology, 3:2 Pull Down eliminates the artificial frames that are created when films are converted to DVDs. The result is a clearer image without the subtle motion artifacts caused by 24-to-30 frames per second video conversion.

TV Guide On Screen System: The TV Guide On Screen system is a free, interactive, on-screen program guide built into the TV that lists schedules and information for TV programs in your area. The TV Guide On Screen system includes the following features:

 • Listings Service: The system displays eight days of local program listings and descriptions from broadcast and cable. You can tune to any program, schedule a program to record, or set a reminder.
 • Search: You can search for programs alphabetically, by keyword, or by category. Within the categories, you can sort by show type, show title, or starring actor.
 • One-touch Recording: To record, you can simply highlight a program title and then press a single button on the remote control. The system will automatically record the program. Programs may be set to record one time or every time they air.
 • Reminder: You may set reminders to ensure that you never miss your favorite program. Reminders can even be set to automatically turn on the TV when a program begins.

Picture Modes: You can choose one of the following picture modes:

 • Standard: resets the standard factory settings
 • Dynamic: for viewing the TV during the day, or when there is bright light in the room
 • Movie: for viewing the TV in low light, or when playing video games
 • Custom: allows you to adjust and store the following settings: contrast, brightness, sharpness, color, tint, and color tone

Color Weakness Enhancement: The Color Weakness Enhancement feature adjusts the Red, Blue, or Green color to enhance the picture according to the user's particular color weakness.

Picture Sizes: You can choose one of the following picture sizes:

 • 16:9: sets the picture to 16:9 wide mode

 • Panorama: use this mode for the wide aspect ratio of a panoramic picture

 • Zoom 1: magnifies the size of the picture and allows you to move the enlarged picture using the arrows on the remote

 • Zoom 2: magnifies the size of the picture more than Zoom 1 and allows you to move the enlarged picture using the arrows on the remote

 • 4:3 Normal: sets the picture to 4:3 normal mode

PC Display: The PC input allows you to connect a personal computer with a D-Sub 15-pin output, allowing you to use the TV as a high-resolution computer monitor. In PC mode, you can adjust the following picture quality settings: Coarse and Fine, both of which allow you to remove picture noise. In addition, you can choose one of the following screen sizes:

 • Wide TV: scales the picture to the size of the TV screen regardless of the aspect ratio of the input source

 • Wide PC: scales the picture to 92% of the screen regardless of the aspect ratio of the input source

 • 4:3: displays the picture as it is without changing the aspect ratio of input source

2-tuner Picture-in-Picture: Two tuners eliminate the need for a second video source for picture-in-picture. You can select standard PIP operation (with a PIP frame size of Large or Small), or one of two split-screen modes. During standard PIP operation, the PIP frame can be moved to any corner on the screen. In both modes, you can alternate sound between the main program and the secondary program.

Digital Signal Strength Meter: The digital signal strength meter can be used to help you find the antenna position that delivers the highest HDTV digital signal strength.

Analog Channel Fine Tuning: The fine tuning feature allows you to manually adjust analog channels for optimal reception. A separate fine tuning setting may be put into the TV's memory for each analog channel.

Low Noise Amplifier (LNA): When the TV's antenna setting is on "Air", instead of "Cable", sometimes reception can be improved by boosting the incoming signal using the LNA function. A separate LNA setting may be put into the TV's memory for each channel.

Auto Volume: Auto volume automatically adjusts the volume of the desired channel by lowering the sound output when the modulation signal is high or by raising the sound output when the modulation signal is low.

Digital Noise Reduction: If the broadcast signal received by your TV is weak, you can activate the Digital Noise Reduction feature to help reduce any static and ghosting that may appear on the screen.

Sound Settings: You can choose from the following sound settings:

 • Standard: resets the standard factory settings

 • Music: for watching music videos and concerts

 • Movie: for watching movies

 • Speech: for watching a show that is mostly dialogue

 • Custom: allows you to adjust the 5-band EQ, which includes the following frequencies: 100 Hz, 300 Hz, 1 kHz, 3 kHz, and 10 kHz

 • SRS TruSurround XT: TruSurround is a patented SRS technology that solves the problem of playing 5.1 multichannel content over two speakers. TruSurround delivers a compelling, virtual surround sound experience through the two speaker internal playback system. It is fully compatible with all multi-channel formats.

Sleep Timer: The sleep timer switches the television off after a specified amount of time. The sleep timer can be set to 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, or 180 minutes.

On/Off Timer: The On/Off timer allows you to program the television to turn itself on and off by selecting a specific on time and a specific off time. You can also choose the "On Timer Channel" and "On Timer Volume."

Anynet: The HL-R5067W features Anynet, an A/V network system to automatically control compatible Samsung audio/video devices through the Anynet menu via the TV's remote control.

Remote Control

Multibrand Remote: The supplied remote is pre-programmed to operate this unit and a number of functions on other brands of components, including VCRs, cable boxes, and DVD players. Several controls are located under a sliding lid that covers the bottom quarter of the remote.

Inputs and Outputs Notes

HDMI/DVI Input: This input consists of left and right audio jacks and an HDMI terminal. The HDMI jack can accommodate a copy-protected digital connection (HDCP) to other devices that have compatible interfaces. The HDMI jack is compliant with the EIA/CEA-861/861B standard and is not intended for use with personal computers. If you want to connect a DVI-compatible device, you will need an HDMI-to-DVI adapter cable. Since DVI does not carry audio signals, a stereo audio input is provided for the HDMI input. In addition to the HDMI-to-DVI adapter cable, you will also need stereo audio cables.

Note: The HDMI jack will accept 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i signals.

PC: This input consists of left and right audio jacks and an analog RGB (D-Sub 15-pin) jack. This jack allows you to connect a personal computer with a D-Sub 15-pin output. When using the RGB (D-Sub 15-pin) jack, you must use the PC Audio input for your audio connection.

D-NET (IEEE 1394): The TV has two IEEE 1394 ports to be used with digital VCRs and camcorders.

Note: These terminals are not intended for use with personal computers.

Component Video Inputs: The 2 sets of component video inputs will accept 1080i, 720p, 480p and 480i signals.

Anynet: A 3.5mm (1/8") minijack is provided for connecting the TV with a Samsung Anynet-compatible component, allowing the connected device to be controlled by the TV remote.

G-LINK: When using the recording features of the TV Guide On Screen system, this minijack output allows you to use the supplied IR blasters to control your VCR.

"Service" Jack: The rear panel of the TV has a Service jack for repair and software upgrades only.
