Overview

Our take on the Samsung HL-S5679W

With the groundbreaking HL-S5679W, Samsung didn't try to reinvent the wheel, they eliminated it altogether — the "color wheel," that is. Until now, every big-screen TV based on DLP™ (Digital Light Processing) technology required a color wheel and arc lamp to provide color and illumination. While that system creates crisp, clean high-definition images, a few viewers occasionally notice distracting flashes of color called "rainbows." These rainbows are caused by the spinning color wheel.

The HL-S5679W doesn't use a color wheel because Samsung found a better solution: LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes). Three super-bright PhlatLight™ LED chipsets — one each for red, green and blue — create vivid, high-contrast images with an ultra-wide color range. The LEDs flash on and off at much higher speeds than a color wheel so that rainbow effects are greatly reduced or eliminated. Other LED benefits include cooler, quieter operation and much quicker start-up.

Like other top-performing big-screen TVs, the 56" HL-S5679W has 1080p resolution. A 720p display has about one million pixels while 1080p has over two million, for pictures with extraordinary detail, texture and three-dimensionality. 1080p is also a pixel-perfect match for 1080i HDTV programs and the new high-definition HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc™ players.

This model has plenty of inputs to handle your current and future audio/video gear. There are two HD-compatible component video inputs, and two HDMI inputs — and for future-readiness, all accept signals up to 1080p. The standard PC input lets this beauty double as a big, high-res computer monitor.

Good News/Bad News

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is a GREAT TV.....BUT......there was a design flaw with the main power board where the capacitors will swell, then leak. Samsung issued a service notification on the problem. If this isn't caught before they leak, it's possible that the main power board is ruined. To make matters worse, Samsung has discontinued making the power board as a part so a pretty-new (18 month old) TV becomes a brick. Because of this I would not recommend ANY Samsung product to anyone.

Amazing!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Man I went through a LOT to find the perfect TV. Did plently of research on web sites to narrow down. I hated the idea of changing a LAMP on traditional LCDs and DLPs, but the PLASMA and FLAT PANEL LCD was too much money, if you want a 55" or bigger. I read many places about video game LAG on LCDs, DLPs and PLASMAs. So I took my XBOX to the store just to see for myself. I tested it with Halo, because it requires instant response. I tried a combination of LCDs, DLPs and PLASMAs. It was a Hitacha LCD and PLASMA, Sony Bravia, JVC LCOS, and Mitsubshi. THEY ALL HAD VIDEO GAME LAG!!! So I thought I had no choice, till I found out Samsung partnered with Microsoft to introduce the GAME MODE which eliminates LAG totally. So I decided to TEST out my XBOX, and it turns out there was no LAG!!! Okay, but I had a few requirements though. I wanted a CABLECARD and PiP and wanted a good price. As it turns out, the HL-S5679W had it ALL! I thought the price was a bit steep, but I took into consideration of buying LAMPS every 2-3yrs on standard LCDs and DLPs and that costs about $250-$300. So it may balance out, which is why I bought this TV. A 55" Plasma costs about $4000 or more. The LED Lamp is said to have 20,000+ hours of life. There are about 8,000 hours in a year. Now typically people watch 2-5 hours of tv a day at average. So this TV should last about 10yrs without getting a lamp - ATLEAST IM HOPING!!!! The picture quality is amazing on this TV. Everything has been great. Now, I only had the TV for a few weeks. My only thing is, in 2yrs I better feel the same way! I realize most people with reviews didn't have their tv long enough.

Somewhat dissappointed

Curt from Freeport, IL on 12/17/2006

This is the first HDTV that I have purchased, so perhaps I was expecting more. I bought the HLS85679W because of the LED backlighting. I wanted a TV that would last quite awhile. Plus, I researched alot and the LED are supposed to have better color than a normal projector lamp. When viewing a HD signal, the picture is great. Non HD signals look much worse than on a normal TV. That might be a problem on all HDTV's. I am not sure. The main points of complaint are the remote and menu items. The remote is cheap even for a $29.00 DVD player. The main buttons are really small and not easy to use. The buttons for controling the pic size, aspect ration ect are at the bottom and very small size. The menu items you use on screen are sluggish. I also don't like the fact that you have to cycle through each input to get to the next. You cant advance until it adjusts to the setting for that input. The same with watching channels from an antenna. If you want to quickly go to another channel you have to input the numbers or else cylce through all the stations up to the one you want, waiting for the TV to adjust to each station. Why cant the remote have a button for each input so that you can go directly to the one you want? Even remotes from 10 year old TVs that I have let you do that. The picture seems to get better the longer the TV is on. Not sure if that is just my eyes adjusting or something Technical.

Stunning Picture

TED from Irvine, CA on 8/21/2006

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Samsung HL-S5679W 56" TV has the most clear and colorful picture of any TV that I have seen. The new LED light engine definitely can reproduce colorful, crisp, and film-like pictures. The sticker on the TV says that the LED light engine can produce 70% more colors. I see that the colors are more life-like and richer. When watching HD channels, the picture is just stunning. Even though the TV has a rated contrast ratio of 4000:1, I find that it is very comparable to other DLP and plasma TVs that have contrast ratings of 10,000:1. The built-in speakers produce very good sounds. I find that the cabinet size with a short depth of 15 inches is very accomodating on my TV table. I pre-ordered this TV back in May, received it a couple of weeks ago and I found it has been definitely worth the wait. By far this is the best TV I have owned.

Features

DLP TV with LED Illumination: Instead of using an arc lamp and color wheel, the HL-S5679W uses LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes). Three super-bright PhlatLightT LED chipsets - one each for red, green and blue - create vivid, high-contrast images with an ultra-wide color range. The LEDs flash on and off at much higher speeds than a color wheel so that rainbow effects are greatly reduced or eliminated. Other LED benefits include cooler, quieter operation and much quicker start-up.

DLP Chip by Texas Instruments: Samsung employs a DLP chip that is comprised of millions of microscopic mirrors capable of switching on and off at 15,000 or more times a second to deliver a razor-sharp picture for fast-moving images.

Cinema Smooth 1080p Light Engine: Samsung's Cinema Smooth light engine brings together the right optics, electronic circuitry and replaceable light source to create a brilliant picture that's more lifelike and much closer to film. The Cinema Smooth light engine delivers crisp, 1080p High Definition resolution with high contrast and brightness, defined edges and sharp detail.

Native Resolution: The television has a display resolution of 1920 x 1080. The HDMI and component video inputs will accept 1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i signals and will display them as 1920 x 1080. All other input signals will also be displayed as 1920 x 1080.

HDTV (ATSC) Tuner: The TV has a built-in over-the-air HDTV (ATSC) tuner, so you don't have to purchase a separate digital set-top box to receive and decode over-the-air HDTV/SDTV signals. The TV also has a 181-channel NTSC analog tuner.

CableCard Compatible: The HL-S5679W is equipped with a slot for a CableCard provided by a local cable service provider. The built-in QAM tuner allows you to tune in your favorite digital cable TV stations.

Wiselink: A side-panel USB port allows you to connect a USB mass storage device to view JPEG files and play MP3 audio files. You have access to the following functions:

  • Photo (JPEG) List: This menu shows JPEG files and folders saved on the USB device and allows you to do the following:

    • View: You can view individual photos by selecting them from the thumbnail display.

    • Rotate: This feature allows you to rotate the selected image by 90°, 180°, or 270°.

    • Zoom: You can enlarge a picture 2x or 4x. Once the image is enlarged, you can move it around onscreen.

    • Slide Show: You can play files on the USB device in a slide show. You can adjust the slide show speed to Slow, Normal, or Fast. You can also choose an MP3 file on the USB device to play as background music during the slide show. The repeat function allows you to play the slide show again and again.

  • MP3 List: This menu shows MP3 files saved on the USB device and allows you to play them back.

TV Guide On Screen System: The TV Guide On Screen system is a free, interactive, on-screen program guide built into the TV that lists schedules and information for TV programs in your area. The TV Guide On Screen system includes the following features:

  • Listings Service: Displays eight days of program listings and descriptions from broadcast and cable, you can tune to any program, schedule a program to record, or set a reminder
  • Search: Search for programs alphabetically, by keyword, or by category, within the categories, you can sort by show type, show title, or starring actor
  • One-touch Recording: Highlight a program title and then press a single button on the remote control to record, programs may be set to record one time or every time they air
  • Reminder: Set reminders to ensure that you never miss your favorite program, reminders can even be set to automatically turn on the TV when a program begins

2-Tuner Picture-in-Picture: You can watch two analog channels or one analog and one digital channel at the same time. Digital channels can be viewed in PIP when the main picture is from an external input (VCR, DVD, or STB). The PIP Swap function can only be performed in the analog RF mode. The two images can be side by side or a small screen over the full screen.

Cinema Smooth Film Mode: Samsung's 3:2 pulldown correction circuitry senses motion found in unconverted 480i DVD video based on 24 fps film productions. This is especially important when converting to a progressive video image, the result is an elimination of visible motion artifacts.

Note: This feature is only available when using analog signals from component, S-video, or composite connections.

Digital Natural Image Engine (DNIe): Samsung's DNIe makes input signals sharper, clearer, and more lifelike. Its advanced image processors and six-times density enhancer help to create true-to-life colors and high contrast, while virtually eliminating digital artifacts.

My Color Control Mode: The My Color Control Mode lets you select predefined settings that affect the skin, sky, and grass tones in a picture without affecting other colors on the screen. You can choose one of the following predefined settings: Standard, Red, Blue, Green, Pink, Yellow or Custom. • Wide Fit: enlarges the aspect ratio of the picture to fit the entire screen

  • 4:3: sets the picture to 4:3 normal mode

Game Mode: When using a video came console, you can optimize your game experience with the Game Mode. The Game Mode enhances dark areas, sharpens the picture, speeds up the image processing response, and enhances the sounds of the games.

Auto Volume: Auto volume automatically adjusts the volume of the desired channel by lowering the sound output when the modulation signal is high or by raising the sound output when the modulation signal is low.

Sound Settings: You can choose from the following sound settings:
