Our take on the Samsung HL-S6187W

Samsung's best-performing big-screens use a 1080p image chip that raises DLP™ (Digital Light Processing) display technology to a higher level. Once you hit screen sizes of 60 inches or better, 1080p resolution offers a very visible advantage in detail and clarity compared to 720p models. A 720p display has about one million pixels while 1080p has over two million, for images that look strikingly natural and real. And 1080p is a pixel-perfect match for 1080i HDTV programs and the new high-definition HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc™ players.

The HL-S6187W's innovative "dynamic iris" delivers superior black level, shadow detail, and overall contrast. The motorized lens iris is controlled by a circuit that continuously samples the brightness level of the video signal. The iris opens and closes instantly, controlling the light output with split-second precision to optimize contrast scene by scene. BrilliantColor™ video processing ensures colors that are both more accurate and more intense than ever before.

The HL-S6187W has plenty of inputs to handle your current and future audio/video gear. There are two HD-compatible component video inputs, and two HDMI inputs — and for future-readiness, all accept signals up to 1080p. The standard PC input lets this set double as a jumbo-sized, hi-res computer monitor. Whether you're interested in HDTV programs, DVD movies, video games, or all of the above, you can count on the HL-S6187W for room-filling, eye-popping entertainment.

one word ....WOW

Dave from Charlotte Hall, Md on 2/1/2007

After countless hours of research I decided on the Samsung DLP 61" to replace my 3 year old 55" Panasonic. Mainly cause I wanted a TV that had a built in HD tuner, HDMI and obviously to take advantage of the 1080p. Currently I'm waiting for HD to be installed which will be next week. Thank god! But I do have a off air antenna hooked up and I can say this DLP blows me away in picture quality. It's mine boggling the difference between my old set and this one. Also using the samsung hd860 dvd player via HDMI is also crystal clear. Unreal! My suggestion to anyone buying this TV is to use the movie "Cars" or "Finding Nemo" to take advantage of the THX optimizer settings in the set up menu of the DVD. This will run you through a simple series of test that will give your DLP the best possible settings for your display.

And to Crutchfield and there service is top notch. Sure they may cost a little more then other places but there service level to there customers is a 10. By the far there are the best at what they do. Ordered my TV on a Friday and on Tuesday the guys were here setting it up. Seamless process. Free Shipping also! I will be a lifetime customer for Crutchfield! Keep up the great work!

Samsung engineers knows how to make HD displays !!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This TV has excelent picture quality. Right out of the box the colors are vivid and true to life, the blacks are inky and deep.

I have my computer connected to the PC input and is really wonderful to browse internet with a 61" screen in your living room!

HDTV through OTA antenna is amazing you won't believe your eyes.

I can't wait to get a blu-ray player!!!

Look no further this is the TV you need.

Fantastic large projection TV..

DJMixalot from Texas on 1/23/2007

I bought a Samsung HL-S6187W (61") TV after looking at the Sony 60" XBR. I think both sets offer about the same quality of video (with Sony maybe doing a little better job of displaying regular [standard definition] TV or VCR signals). But for anything HD, youd be hard pressed to find the difference between the two. Others have said the Sony might be slightly brighter, but thats a non-issue for me since I usually dim the surrounding light prior to watching a movie. In my opinion, I think the Samsung is as bright as it should be (even with ambient light).

I purchased the extended service plan because it's recommended for Microdisplays, since they didnt have enough data to know their reliability after the first year (when your manufacturers warranty runs out). Plus their warranty also covers the replacement of the bulb, which should last around 2000 hours. Also, any DLP TV has more moving parts (the spinning color wheel), whereas the Sony LCD projection doesnt have any moving parts (except for a cooling fan, which they both have). So this was another reason to get the warranty.

Ultimately, what convinced me wasnt something technical. It was the style/design of the TV. I just loved Samsungs piano black (only on the 56", 61" and 71") and the slim bezel around the TV.

Judith from Melbourne, FL on 1/5/2007

I ordered this rear projection after LOTS of serious consideration for the LCD's and Plasma's. I can't even imagine a better picture than this one has!! I had our cable company put in a high definition box and the on demand feature. All I can say is WOW!! You feel like you're part of the movies. The HD shows blow my mind. The 61" screen is perfect. The stand that comes with it is really nice, (not cheesy)!! I have a DVD player, receiver, VHS player, AND my cable box under there. PLENTY of room, and stylish looking! Now I find myself watching HD shows like Discovery and watching the Space Shuttle.... you feel like you're THERE! I can't recommend this one enough. ((Why didn't I do it sooner))???

Digitalman from Augusta,Ga. on 10/18/2006

Anyone out there searching for an alternative to pricey Plasma and LCD sets take note:
This Samsung will fit the bill and to get this much viewing size 61" for this amount of money well you do the math.
Sure I wouldnt mind having plasma and the slim profile and all that goes with it but I cannot get this much picture for this price and the size. This is the way to go, its low profile footprint of less that 16" makes it ideal as a setop television.
It is the picture quality that will convince you the only way I can describe it is Cinematic everything you watch on it takes on a different view. The 1080p upconversion of non hi-def signals is great too.
It does not have PIP so you may want to consider that as well, but it does have PC connection which I intend to try as soon as I can find a cable to reach the other side of my room.
If you love contrast inducing inky blacks this is your set
and the 10,000 to one contrast ratio means youll experience all the color detail you can stand.
The speakers are so so but they are adequate and the styling will fit in with just about any decor.
The menu contols are intuative so navigating around it is no big deal, and it also only recognizes components that are connected to it at the time, and my XBOX 360 looks awesome.
Hope to experience High Definition DVDs soon I know theyll look just awesome!
Hope this helps someone, really this is a tremendous set and right out of the box the picture will just floor you! Youll find yourself running through your entire DVD collection and saying to yourself I wonder what this or that movie looks like on this great television.
Inputs and Outputs Notes

DLP Projection System: DLP (Digital Light Processing) technology by Texas Instruments is the only display solution that enables projection systems to create a purely digital connection between a digital video or graphic source and the screen in front of you. While all other technologies are analog and compromise some image quality in translation, DLP projection unleashes the full potential of high-quality video content.

DLP Chip by Texas Instruments: Samsung employs a DLP chip that is comprised of millions of microscopic mirrors capable of switching on and off at 15,000 or more times a second to deliver a razor-sharp picture for fast-moving images.

Cinema Smooth 1080p Light Engine: Samsung's Cinema Smooth 1080p light engine produces razor-sharp pictures in 1080p with a 5-segment color wheel that produces natural, vivid colors. The TV has a contrast ratio of up to 10,000:1, with outstanding colors and deep black levels.

5-Segment Color Wheel: The HL-S6187W features a faster 5-segment 2.2" color wheel than previous models, spinning at 14,400 rpm for smooth, fast-motion video. The wheel has the 3 primary colors of red, green, and blue, plus adds Cyan and Yellow, for more accurate colors.

Native Resolution: The television has a display resolution of 1920 x 1080. The HDMI and component video inputs will accept 1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i signals and will display them as 1920 x 1080. All other input signals will also be displayed as 1920 x 1080.

HDTV (ATSC) Tuner: The TV has a built-in over-the-air HDTV (ATSC) tuner, so you don't have to purchase a separate digital set-top box to receive and decode over-the-air HDTV/SDTV signals. The TV also has a 181-channel NTSC analog tuner.

Wiselink: A side-panel USB port allows you to connect a USB mass storage device to view JPEG files and play MP3 audio files. You have access to the following functions:

  • Photo (JPEG) List: This menu shows JPEG files and folders saved on the USB device and allows you to do the following:

    • View: You can view individual photos by selecting them from the thumbnail display.

    • Rotate: This feature allows you to rotate the selected image by 90°, 180°, or 270°.

    • Zoom: You can enlarge a picture 2x or 4x. Once the image is enlarged, you can move it around onscreen.

    • Slide Show: You can play files on the USB device in a slide show. You can adjust the slide show speed to Slow, Normal, or Fast. You can also choose an MP3 file on the USB device to play as background music during the slide show. The repeat function allows you to play the slide show again and again.

  • MP3 List: This menu shows MP3 files saved on the USB device and allows you to play them back.

Cinema Smooth Film Mode: Samsung's 3:2 pulldown correction circuitry senses motion found in unconverted 480i DVD video based on 24 fps film productions. This is especially important when converting to a progressive video image, the result is an elimination of visible motion artifacts. Note: This feature is only available when using analog signals from component, S-video, or composite connections.

Digital Natural Image Engine (DNIe): Samsung's DNIe makes input signals sharper, clearer, and more lifelike. It's advanced image processors and six-times density enhancer help to create true-to-life colors and high contrast, while virtually eliminating digital artifacts.

My Color Control Mode: The My Color Control Mode lets you select predefined settings that affect the skin, sky, and grass tones in a picture without affecting other colors on the screen. You can choose one of the following predefined settings: Standard, Red, Blue, Green, Pink, Yellow or Custom. The Custom setting allows you to individually set and store color saturation values between 0 and 50 for Red, Blue, Green, Pink, and Yellow. If desired, you can instantly reset the colors to the factory default.

Picture Modes: You can choose one of the following picture modes:

  • Standard: resets the standard factory settings
  • Dynamic: for viewing the TV during the day, or when there is bright light in the room
  • Cinema: for viewing the TV in low light, or when playing video games
  • Custom: allows you to adjust and store the following settings: contrast, brightness, sharpness, color and tint

Color Weakness Enhancement: The Color Weakness Enhancement feature adjusts the Red, Blue, or Green color to enhance the picture according to the user's particular color weakness.

Picture Sizes: You can choose one of the following picture sizes:

  • 16:9: sets the picture to 16:9 wide mode

  • Wide Fit: enlarges the aspect ratio of the picture to fit the entire screen

  • Zoom 1: magnifies the size of the picture and allows you to move the enlarged picture using the arrows on the remote

  • Zoom 2: magnifies the size of the picture more than Zoom 1 and allows you to move the enlarged picture using the arrows on the remote

  • 4:3: sets the picture to 4:3 normal mode

Auto Volume: Auto volume automatically adjusts the volume of the desired channel by lowering the sound output when the modulation signal is high or by raising the sound output when the modulation signal is low.

Sound Settings: You can choose from the following sound settings:

  • Standard: resets the standard factory settings

  • Music: for watching music videos and concerts

  • Movie: for watching movies

  • Speech: for watching a show that is mostly dialogue

  • Custom: allows you to adjust the 5-band EQ, which includes the following frequencies: 100 Hz, 300 Hz, 1 kHz, 3 kHz, and 10 kHz

  • SRS TruSurround XT: TruSurround is a patented SRS technology that solves the problem of playing 5.1 multichannel content over two speakers. TruSurround delivers a compelling, virtual surround sound experience through the two speaker internal playback system. It is fully compatible with all multi-channel formats.

Sleep Timer: The sleep timer switches the television off after a specified amount of time. The sleep timer can be set to 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, or 180 minutes.

On/Off Timer: The On/Off timer allows you to program the television to turn itself on and off by selecting a specific on time and a specific off time. You can also choose the "On Timer Channel" and "On Timer Volume".

PC Display: The PC input allows you to connect a personal computer with a D-Sub 15-pin output, allowing you to use the TV as a high-resolution computer monitor. In PC mode, you can adjust the following picture quality settings: Coarse and Fine, both of which allow you to remove picture noise.

Remote Control

Multibrand Remote: The supplied remote is pre-programmed to operate this unit and a number of functions on other brands of components, including VCRs, cable boxes, and DVD players. Several controls are located under a sliding lid that covers the bottom quarter of the remote.

Inputs and Outputs Notes

Side Panel Inputs: The TV features a set of audio/video jacks (composite video and stereo RCA audio) on the right side panel. These jacks allow you to easily and quickly connect a camcorder or video game console.

HDMI: This input consists of two HDMI terminals. The HDMI terminals can accommodate a copy-protected digital connection (HDCP) to other devices (such as digital set-top boxes) that have compatible interfaces. One of the HDMI terminals can be used for a DVI-equipped component. A separate analog audio connection and a DVI-to-HDMI adapter will be needed. The HDMI jacks accept 1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480p and 480i signals.

PC: This input consists of left and right audio jacks and an analog RGB (D-Sub 15-pin) jack. This jack allows you to connect a digital set-top box with an RGB output, or a personal computer with a D-Sub 15-pin output. When using the RGB (D-Sub 15-pin) jack, you must use the PC Audio input for your audio connection.

Component Video Inputs: The 2 sets of component video inputs will accept 1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480p and 480i signals.

Antenna Inputs: Two independent cables or antennas can be connected to the "Ant 1 In" or "Ant 2 In" terminals.
