Our take on the Samsung HT-H5500W

Things that go "thump" in the night

It's movie night, and you're glued to the screen as your protagonist cautiously tiptoes down creaking stairs. She pauses to take in her surroundings, an unfinished basement, dimly lit by a swinging bare bulb. You're hypnotized by the shadows and quiet sound of breathing when all of the sudden, a loud BOOM jolts you out of your seat....

Not the experience you get when watching a thriller on your current TV setup? The Samsung HT-H5500W is an all-in-one solution to that problem. With a full complement of five home theater speakers and a subwoofer, you'll get a huge surround sound upgrade to your TV speakers. Your picture will look great too, thanks to the built-in Blu-ray player that delivers crisp HD picture quality. You can even play 3D movies on a compatible TV.

Straightforward setup with fewer wires

The HT-H5500W includes a wireless connection module for the rear speakers. Rather than running wires across the room, you instead plug the module into an outlet behind your seating area and hook up your speakers to it. Easily connect the front speakers and sub to the receiver using supplied, color coded speaker wires. The receiver plugs into the TV via an HDMI connection (HDMI cable not included). Once you're hooked up, simply select a preset sound setting from choices like "Music," "Cinema," or "Game," and you're ready to go.

Loaded with connected entertainment features

Perhaps what's most impressive about the HT-H5500W is the number of entertainment options it gives you. When using the built-in Wi-Fi, you have access to a generous selection of apps. Stream movies and TV shows through services such as Netflix®, Hulu®, and YouTube™. You can also wirelessly mirror the display of your smartphone or tablet on your TV's big screen using Miracast™ technology. The receiver also has integrated Bluetooth®, allowing you to play music from compatible devices through your speakers.

Product Highlights:

Great sound for the price. The rear speakers only work during curtain movies and shows, that's the only reason I do not give it 5 stars.

Did not meet expectations

Brent B from Ca on 5/11/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

To be honest, I was looking for a unique setup with rear wireless. This product does have rear wireless speakers, but be clear that they are not the same as the front and only provide sound to enhance the main speakers which it says in the manual. I wish I knew that going into the purchase as I would not have purchased it. The speakers seem to be fitting for a computer more than an entertainment system as their quality is very bottom end. Worst of all, the system tries to take add in smart capabilities, connecting to external drive for music and pictures, accessing youtube, hulu, amazon, etc. I really like the online features like amazon and youtube integration, but they are not even comparable to the Roku3 we just bought. These features just seem so slow compared to the Roku3.

Cons: Limited sound from rear speakers. Slow 'smart features'.

Good for the price

Ryan from Kansas on 4/20/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is not an expensive setup but it does sound and work well. The speaker wires with the rear surround speakers are short so do not be surprised if you need to extend them. Do not forget to buy and digital optical cable as there are only 2 options to get the sound into it from other equipment.

Pros: value for the price

Cons: short wires and it needs more options to hook up other equipment.

Cheap Junk that does not work properly

Freebitz from Colorado on 4/11/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

To say I am sorely disappointed in this product is charitable. The instruction manual is poorly written and produced and difficult to read and not clear. All speakers work when testing using the test tone feature, but not when actually in use as I can only get the two front left and right speakers and woofer to produce any output. I tried all sorts of inputs and various channels and the result is the same. No point in burning electricity to power the rear speakers, even though the instructions say that sound will only come from them under certain circumstances. Nothing comes from them at all in my case. And, in any event the pan and level from speakers should be controllable as a user feature and it is not.

Pros: At least you can control it with a Comcast remote

Cons: Everything else

Very good.

Not Bad...

ArdoCT from New York on 3/22/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

A fairly nice little 5.1 in-a-box: not bad for the money, but not great either. Not too much low end, even with the Sub adjusted full-up...I had a Panasonic 5.1in-a-box with wireless rear speakers that was much more gutsy, at about the same price; couldn't use it (or I would have...) as my new Samsung UHD 4k TV didn't accommodate it, connection-wise (no optical out on the Panasonic: Bummer...). I actually would've returned this for lack-luster performance except for a few reasons, one being that I'm just too lazy to take the whole shebang apart, re-pack it and hassle with sending it back; the other being that it's becoming increasingly difficult to find a decent system with Wireless rear speakers with any real "whack" for a reasonable price (or even at all!). Also, can't seem to get much gain out of the surrounds, no matter what! Oh well...

Good sound for the Price - was looking at Sound Bars but choose this to get the 5 speakers sound - much better than sound bars, and the wireless rear speaker was a plus.

Pros: God sound, good price

Cons: Some problems connecting and getting to work w/ older HD TV - but came together and sounds good.

Decent product for the money

Mark L from Washington on 2/8/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The documentation is skimpy, but setup was faily straightforward, and once tuned to my space, the sound is good. The wires are color coded, makling set-up easier, but the connectors to speakers could be more robust.

Pros: Good value in sound quality for the money, set up fairly easy

Cons: Documentation is scanty, connectors and wiring very lightweight.

I have no idea how the build this much quality and function for this price. It's easily worth twice the price. The FM tuner was a nice surprise.

Pros: Easy hook up High quality look and feel Amazing bang for the buck

Cons: Is it a Bose Lifestyle? No. But at 25% of the price it's amazing

Great System

DanS from Washington on 1/11/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This system sounds really good, even in a large vaulted living room. I bought the scratch and dent model and cant find any flaws on it.

Pros: Easy setup. Wireless network. Looks nice with no knobs.

Cons: The rear wireless speakers only have one remote driver so if your couch isn't on the wall you will have a wire going across the room to the second rear speaker.

Nice little system.

I like it!

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Added this to my new Samsung UN40H6350 40-Inch 1080p 120Hz (Native; 240 Clear MotionRate) Smart LED TV (excellent picture!) and it greatly improves the sound. They make a good combo. Easy to "plug and play". Not yet sure about which remote (Charter Cable box, the TV or the speaker system!) to use for what. Probably ought to read some of the instruction books.

Video Section

HDMI ver.1.4: The Samsung Blu-ray Home Theater System is equipped with an HDMI (v.1.4) output. HDMI simplifies A/V connections by carrying video and digital audio all in one cable. The HDMI output resolution can be set to 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i or 1080p when playing a DVD or Blu-ray Disc; also 1080/24p when playing a compatible BD.

  • 1080/24p: Movies are typically filmed at 24 frames per second and some Blu-ray Discs use the same frame rate. If your TV will accept a 1080/24p signal, the HT-H5500W can pass the signal in its native form, without converting the video.
  • HD Up-conversion: With HD Up-conversion, non-HD video is auto-enhanced to bring you near-HD quality. You'll see your favorite titles with greater detail and clarity on your HDTV.

  • 3D: The 3D Blu-ray disc is played in 3D mode at all times. The original video signal of the 3D image is displayed without any conversion. If a TV cannot support 3D Blu-ray discs, the playing screen will be black.
  • 2D: The 3D Blu-ray disc is played in 2D mode at all times. Choose this to view a picture without 3D effects or when a TV cannot support 3D Blu-ray discs.

Progressive Mode: The Samsung Blu-ray Home Theater System provides a Progressive mode to improve picture quality when viewing a DVD movie.

Deep/x.v.Color: Deep Color allows more accurate color reproduction with deep color depth. The system must be connected to a Deep Color compatible TV via HDMI for this feature to function.  The unit also supports x.v.Color; meaning it's ready for x.v.Color discs, such as AVCHD discs (MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 format).

Picture Settings: The system offers various Picture Settings to match your TV and viewing content.

  • Screen Size: You can enter the actual screen size (up to 116") of your TV, so that the system can adjust the image according to the screen size and display an optimal image.

Surround Modes: The Samsung HT-H5500W can decode Dolby Digital, DTS, and Dolby Pro Logic II surround formats.

Note: 7.1 channel surround formats will be downmixed to 5.1-channels since this system has no surround back speakers.

ARC (Audio Return Channel): This feature allows audio to be sent from your compatible HDTV to the Blu-ray home theater system through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio and video to your HDTV. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to your television.

Note: The With most televisions, the ARC-enabled HDMI input will pass Dolby Digital or 2ch PCM from the TV's built-in tuner, network connection, or USB port. However, the ARC-enabled HDMI input can only pass 2ch PCM from devices connected to the TV via HDMI or analog.

Analog + Digital Connections: The Samsung HT-H5500W features both analog (stereo RCA) and digital (optical) audio inputs.

  • Optical Digital Input: The Samsung HW-H5500W is equipped with an optical (toslink) digital input to connect your non-ARC enabled TV, satellite/cable box, or game console. The digital optical output terminals of most newer flat-panel TVs only send an audio signal in 5.1ch when receiving Dolby Digital/DTS surround sound from the TV's built-in tuner, network connection, or connected USB device; and will output only 2ch stereo from sources connected to the TV via HDMI, or RCA (like your Blue-ray/DVD player or satellite/cable box).
  • AUX Input: The Samsung HW-H5500W also features a stereo RCA input to connect your analog television or other analog audio component.

Note: To get the best audio performance out of the Samsung HW-H5500W, use the system's HDMI output and optical digital input to connect your TV and satellite/cable box separately. Connect the system's HDMI output to the ARC-enabled HDMI input on your TV and connect your satellite/cable box directly to the HW-H5500W's optical digital input. By connecting your satellite/cable box directly to the soundbar system, you'll gain Dolby Digital/DTS decoding.

Audio Settings: The Samsung HT-H5500W offers the following audio adjustments.

  • Speaker Setup: You can adjust the level (+/-6 dB) and distance (1-30') of each speaker.
  • DRC: You can use the DRC (Dynamic Range Compression) function to enjoy Dolby Digital sound when watching movies at low volume during the night. DRC compresses the audio to make the loudest sounds quieter and the quietest sounds louder.
  • AV Sync: Video may look slower than the audio if it is connected to a digital TV. If this occurs, you can adjust the audio delay time to match the video. You can adjust the AV Sync from 0 to 300ms (in 25ms increments).

FM Tuner: The Samsung BD receiver features a built-in FM tuner with manual, seek, and preset tuning. You can store up to 15 FM preset stations. This receiver does not feature an AM tuner.

Network/Internet Functions

Wired or Wireless Network Connection: You can set up the Samsung Blu-ray Home Theater System so that it can access your home network and select online apps through your local area network (LAN) using a wired connection (RJ-45 Ethernet) or wireless connection (built-in WiFi). You can setup a wired network connection automatically or manually. You can setup the wireless network connection using these four methods; Automatic, Manual, WPS (PBC), or WPS (PIN). The Blu-ray player's built-in WiFi supports IEEE 802.11A/B/G/N wireless LAN networks and WEP (open/shared), WPA-PSK (TKIP/AES), or WPA2-PSK network security.

You'll be able to wirelessly transfer personal content (such as photos & videos) to the Samsung Blu-ray Home Theater System without connecting to your home network. There is no HDMI connection point. [ Thomas  Dec 17, 2014 ]
I have used the HDMI OUT jack to connect to a TV which supports ARC with no issues. Here's information available in the user manual: Connecting to a TV Connect an HDMI cable (not supplied) from the HDMI OUT jack on the back of the product to the HDMI IN jack on your TV. If the TV supports ARC, you can hear the audio from your TV through the home theater with only this cable connected. Hope that helps. :) [ VIJAY  Dec 15, 2014 ]

The speakers can be mounted to the wall. That being said...they are not individually powered. The way the system works. The main head unit transmits to a receiver that is about the size of a hard back book. From there, two wires are run to each rear channel speaker. [ David  Jun 30, 2014 ]
if you mean the rear, surround speakers, then yes you can mount them but they have wires. The wires are connected to the surround module that itself is wireless. [ Mark  Jun 30, 2014 ]

I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: That unit does have RCA and optical digital inputs for connecting to your TV or an external device like a CD player. It does not have HDMI inputs connecting a cable box or gaming system, though. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat.
