Overview

Our take on the Samsung HT-J5500W

Your television's high-definition picture can take you on a trip to beautiful landscapes, fantasy worlds, and even the big game. But when the sound comes up flat, it's hard to really feel like you're part of the action. The Samsung HT-J5500W is an easy surround sound solution that'll help you suspend disbelief. You get a full complement of five home theater speakers and a subwoofer, all in one box. Hear vehicles zooming toward you from the left, echoes ringing out behind, or crowd murmurs and cheers all around. You'll also enjoy clear dialogue, thumping special effects, and lush soundtracks.

Entertainment on board with Blu-ray, Bluetooth®, and Wi-Fi

No need to purchase a separate Blu-ray player or streaming box thanks to this system's versatile media player/receiver. Enjoy gorgeous high-def picture quality with standard and 3D Blu-ray discs, and get crisp-looking playback with DVDs upconverted to 1080p. Built-in Wi-Fi lets you play movies, shows, and music from streaming services like Netflix®, Hulu®, YouTube™, and Pandora®. Wirelessly mirror the display of your smartphone or tablet on your TV's big screen using Miracast™ technology. You can also stream music from compatible devices via Bluetooth.

Straightforward setup with fewer wires

The HT-J5500W includes a wireless connection module for the rear speakers. Rather than running wires across the room, you instead plug the module into an outlet behind your seating area and hook up your speakers to it. Connect the front speakers and sub to the receiver using supplied speaker wires. The receiver plugs into your TV via an HDMI connection (HDMI cable not included). Presets like "Music," "Cinema," "Night," or "Power Bass" let you adjust the sound for the occasion.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I needed an inexpensive and simple to use HTIB in my den for my grandson and his friends to use. I have a home theater room for the adults, with Denon, Oppo, and Definitive Technology hardware. This Samsung system sounds more than good enough for my grandson, his friends, and adults who want to escape into the den, at less than 5% of the cost as my larger system. Very simple to install the entire system and the wireless rear speakers preclude running speaker wires across the room or in the ceiling. The system supports wired and wireless lan connections. The automated wireless setup was fast. There is one HDMI output, but no video inputs on this system. It does have all the major streaming media apps and a built-in BluRay .player. I would recommend this system if you want a simple to install and use, and cost-effective home theater solution.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

After two weeks I really like this unit. Great sound: good bass and very good surround effect even with the TV. Nothing beats it for the price (my was actually deeply discounted). It certainly beats my older (and way much more expensive) Polk Surroundbar 50 system.

Pros: great sound, small footprint, eliminates the need for separate receiver/amplifier (unless you are a real audiophile) and blue-ray, easy to connect, price

Cons: nothing particular; some may not like that the surround speakers are not totally wireless (those are wired to a wireless receiver), which is a small inconvenience (if any).

Samsung HT-J5500W

Randy from KY on 7/17/2017

I ave had a Samsung HT E5400 Surround Sound 3D system with EXACTLY all the same problems listed below!!! Can't believe they are still making the same systems with the same problems dating back to 2010! An on-line blog showed how to fix the constant turning off and on by attaching a small wire to the front harness, so why they couldn't do this at the factory and stop this on-going problem? When I called they wanted me to return it, but the many on-line experiences of others said NO! Last "firmware update" caused my U-Tube connection to disappear and to stop playing any 3D blu-disc's completely. It still plays great sounding Blu-ray and DVD discs, does have great sound, but a really poor designed player.

Cons:

Unit shuts off when it wants too!!!

Cons: Unit shuts off when it wants too!!! Samsung customer service is bad!!

Not Worth It

John from Ft Worth, TX on 6/7/2017

I would like to add my 2 cents on how bad this system is. Like others here, I was happy until the subwoofer and center speaker stopped. The subwoofer has never really worked 100%. I've had it 2.5 years and it sometimes won't do anything except show a message - no disc. I liked it when it worked. Maybe it was the firmware update.

Pros: Great sound.

Cons: Dies a quick death.

Firmware update disables center spkr and subwoofer

PS from Independence, MO on 6/2/2017

Worked great for about 2 years until a firmware update disabled the center speaker and subwoofer. Since it was more than 1 yr after my purchase, it was not under warranty. I spent an hour with Samsung tech support who really do not have any good advice or solutions to fix an issue that was caused by their update from 1011 to 1012.5. All of my speakers worked fine with youtube, dvd, cd, thumbdrive, and phone via bluetooth. I noticed that 5.1 was disabled on Netflix, and tested my sound on all options previously mentioned prior to doing the firmware update via USB since it was not doing it via the online option. I had previously updated to the 1011.0 update with no issues. Unless you have purchased extended warranty on this equipment, you will be stuck with low grade stereo sound after the firmware update. If you enjoy taking equipment in for repairs and or wasting time performing useless fixes with tech support, then this is something you might want to purchase. Otherwise, spend your money on another company's product.

Pros:

Cons:

Hooked it up and all worked well. Particular like having the wireless rear speakers so I didn't have to run wires across the whole room. Wouldn't hesitate to buy another one.

Pros: The wireless rear speakers

Cons: None

Ok system

Danny from West Union, Ohio on 3/21/2017

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Crutchfield delivered on time. System was not what I expected. I was told the sub had it's own power, it doesn't, it's a passive sub-woofer, also the wireless rear speakers is a gimmick! There are wires to the rear speaker they just get hooked up to the wireless module which needs plugged into a wall outlet! Stupid!! My Sony home-theater system which is 20 years old has better sound than this does.

Almost good

MDW from Rockville, MD on 8/31/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Sound quality is good, but agree with other reviews on rear surround speakers. They only come on if your audio output has surround sound. Connecting your phone or other source to play music doesn't use the surround speakers. Volume is limited and woofer is marginal, but plan on trying a powered Polk sub-woofer. Having said that, it was still a good choice for a small setting.

Pros: Ease of setup and overall decent quality of sound. Wireless rear speakers make for ease of placement.

Cons: Rear speakers only work for certain sound effects. Woofer is not loud enough.

Monty from Valparaiso, FL on 8/5/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I am NOT a picky audio critic. I was looking for a good surround sound system and after research settled on this one. It is delivering everything I was looking for with a deep and rich sound. No problems whatsoever with the wireless speakers, which was one of my concerns going in. I had one question before purchasing, and a Crutchfield pro answered it clearly and in half the time that was promised.

Pros: Good sound, ease of setup, worked great right out of the box

Cons: None

Cons: passive subwoofer

Very pleased

Stevo from Boulder, CO on 4/23/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was very easy to hook up and sounds fantastic. I'm not an audiophile type anymore so take that for what it's worth. This product, however, delivers fairly rich sound and while more designed for movie watching/listening, delivers a pretty damn good audio output for listening to music. Had no problem linking the music on my phone, ipad etc. to this unit and able to listen with way better sound quality than my portable speaker (won't mention the brand). This item will NEVER replace a true audiophile type system for sound but it sure makes our small space a lot more enjoyable for movie watching. Highly recommend for those on a budget that want to experience theater mimicking sound (nothing can replace the wattage and speaker placement of a true quality theater).

Pros: Hook up extremely easy (5-10 minutes). Sound quality very good for watching movies etc. Aesthetically very attractive.

Cons: Rear speakers aren't "truly" wireless but they work for me. I have no complaints.

Be Fully AwareThat This H.T. not fully compatible with Samsung TV's

Anonymous from Boynton Beach, FL on 4/21/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

As one who did full due diligence (you name it, I did it; asked all the right questions), and is savvy in device set ups, this H.T. fails the smell test. After calling the Samsung help line, as the set up would not begin no matter what, after at least 10 minutes the very difficult to understand female, informed me to press and hold the "stop" button on the main unit. No where in the manual or on line did I find that this was a remedy to begin the set up. That was just the beginning though of the issues to mate with my new Samsung TV (both 2015 models). I did figure it out, but do not expect much from these difficult to understand reps. Once I found what functions and controls to use on each device through trial and error, I actually think this is a value and offers good performance.

Pros: After you get it operating it provides good value. See above.

Cons: see above.

A little less then expected but still good

James from Baltimore, MD on 4/20/2016

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Didn't really buy this for blu ray movies, more for the surround sound. Sound quality is amazing, paired with my new 4k TV it's like a movie theater experience. Connects to your WiFi so you can use Netflix.

Pros: Great sound

Cons: Doesn't come with any cables to hook up to a TV, need to get either an hdmi cable or fiber optic separately. Surround speakers only come on if your audio output has surround, so connecting your phone to play music doesn't use the surround speakers. Haven't looked too much into this though so it may be able to change in settings

Samsung HT-J5500W

Roland from Waldorf, MD on 3/26/2016

Biggest problem with this product is it only puts out through the speakers as what you put in. If you are listening to the FM feature or Bluetooth, all you get is basic stereo 2 speaker sound. The only way to get surround sound is to have surround sound input. You have to tether a device or from a DVD. My last system was a Sony and it played through all the speakers on certain sound field settings. Very disappointed with the product for the $$

Pros: Interacts fine with Bluetooth devices. Sound Quality is ok, nothing great.

Cons: You get the sound that you put in. No way to improve it.

Pros: Easy to install, was not scratched or dented.

Cons: Surround sound does not work, rear speakers never make a sound after adjusting setting numerous times. Would not recommend this product.

cannot give 5-stars because the first unit was defective. instead of a metal gate for the optical cable it was covered with mesh. subwoofer and 2 speakers did not receive sound. Shame on Samsung- I expected excellence!. .Crutchfield immediately sent replacement unit. . only been using it for one week and no other problems to report.

Pros: easy installation sound is great Netflix, Amazon and Hulu built in apps means I can listen direct from home theater speakers as opposed to TV speakers. did not need to purchase optical cable or HDMI since I already owned these items.. They are rarely included in purchases. ,

Cons: none

merrick from Cincinnati on 12/12/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

this is a great system with great sound. i have used TV/streaming/DVD/bluetooth and all sound great. it does have FM radio which i did not know. i havent gotten in to all the features like the wifi. it has an extensive menu. the only thing i would caution, i was looking for WIRELESS rear speakers. So these rear speakers do have a wire. they plug in to a box that plugs in to wall. You dont have to run wires from the actual speakers to the main control box, but you do have to run wires from the plugged in control box to the speakers. so its misleading unless you know thats how it works. but its better then wires running all thru the room and like i said the sound is great.

Pros: cool menu, cool remote, great sound, very high quality looking equipment

Cons: check wireless speakers detail, blu ray player is touch screen controls on the unit

Dal from Kansas on 11/8/2015

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Nice unit with speakers that will not take up much space, if limited. Crisp sound with moderate sub. The sub is not going to rattle any windows but does provide enough bass to give a more realistic experience. Plenty of options to use i.e....internet apps, mirroring etc. I also use the receiver to listen to my Sirius mobile/home device, it allows me to get more full sound with the speakers opposed to the 2 bookshelf speakers on my stereo. Only downside for me, is the rear speakers only work while using the Blu-ray, it would be nice to hear them for TV/Radio. Navigation of the menu is straight forward and the speaker adjustment for distance and decibels is nice to use to fine tune the sound to your position in your home. I would give the unit only 4 stars based on the lack of use of the rear speakers but will add another for the exceptional service you get with Crutchfield! You may find this unit for less money elsewhere, but if you run into an issue, it is doubtful you will have the tech service to walk you through it, sometimes it pays to have wonderful support!!

Pros: Great for small or mid sized rooms

Cons: Rear speakers are limited for use

Blu-ray Disc uses the Advanced Access Content System (AACS) to prevent unauthorized recording of copyrighted material.

Firmware/Software Upgrade: As Blu-Ray technology continues to evolve, new disc types with enhanced functionality will become available. In order for you to enjoy this new functionality, you will likely be required to update the firmware in your system. These firmware updates will become available for downloading from the Internet. The unit's Software Upgrade menu allows you to upgrade the system's software & firmware for these performance improvements & additional services. You can upgrade in four ways; Internet, USB, Disc, or Downloaded file. Visit the Samsung Download Center for the latest Firmware/Software updates.

Quick Start: Quick Start speeds up the load time on movies, so discs start faster after they're inserted into the system. The Samsung Blu-ray home theater system has a start-up time of approximately 0.3 seconds in Quick Start mode (7.1 seconds in normal mode). In Quick Start mode, it takes approximately 12.7 seconds for a Blu-ray disc to begin playback (20.7 seconds in normal mode).

Note: The Start Up/Play Back Time tests were started with the Blu-ray system initially turned off & in standby mode. The Start Up Time test was stopped when the system's Home Menu screen appeared. The Play Back Time test was stopped when the Blu-ray disc began playback.

USB Port (w/ ripping): The Samsung Blu-ray HT System features a front-panel USB (type-A) port that allows playback of a variety of audio files, still-image files, and video files stored on a USB mass storage class device (formatted in FAT16, FAT32, or NTFS). The system even allows you to rip CD-Audio to a connected USB msc device in MP3 format. The USB port also allows you to perform software upgrades using a USB flash drive. In addition, it can be used to add more local storage for BD-Live content.

Note: A USB device consuming more than 500mA requires a separate power supply device for normal operation.

There are up to 8 ratings levels on a disc. The rating levels are protected by a customer user 4-digit password.

Video Section

HDMI 1.4: The Samsung Blu-ray home theater system is equipped with an HDMI (v.1.4) output. HDMI simplifies A/V connections by carrying video and digital audio all in one cable. The HDMI output resolution can be set to 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i or 1080p when playing a DVD or Blu-ray Disc; also 1080/24p when playing a compatible BD.

Note: The Samsung HT-J5500W provides no analog video or audio outputs.

Video Up-conversion + Progressive Mode: When connected to your TV using the HDMI output, the HT-J5500W scales the output of a standard DVD signal to HD-compatible 720p, 1080i, or 1080p. The unit also supports 480p and 480i output if your television is not HD-compatible. The Samsung Blu-ray HT System also provides a Progressive mode to improve picture quality when viewing a DVD movie.

Full HD 3D: The Samsung HT-J5500W supports 3D playback of high-definition 3D Blu-ray discs when connected to a 3D-Ready HDTV via HDMI, along with wearing a pair 3D vision glasses. You can select from three 3D modes to suit your viewing needs.

  • Auto: You can choose whether to watch a 3D Blu-ray disc in 3D or 2D mode before playing a 3D Blu-ray disc. It is automatically played in 2D mode if your TV cannot support 3D contents.
  • 3D: The 3D Blu-ray disc is played in 3D mode at all times. The original video signal of the 3D image is displayed without any conversion. If a TV cannot support 3D Blu-ray discs, the playing screen will be black.
  • 2D: The 3D Blu-ray disc is played in 2D mode at all times. Choose this to view a picture without 3D effects or when a TV cannot support 3D Blu-ray discs.

Deep Color: Deep Color allows more accurate color reproduction with deep color depth. The system must be connected to a Deep Color compatible TV via HDMI for this feature to function.

Picture Settings: The system offers various Picture Settings to match your TV and viewing content.

  • Screen Size: You can enter the actual screen size (up to 116") of your TV, so that the system can adjust the image according to the screen size and display an optimal image.
  • TV Aspect: You can adjust the video output of the system to match the screen-type of your television. You can choose from 16:9 Original, 16:9 Full, 4:3 Letter Box, or 4:3 Pan-Scan.
  • Picture Modes: This function enables you to adjust video quality when the system is connected to your TV. Choose from Normal, Movie, Dynamic, or User. The User mode lets you manually adjust brightness, contrast, color, and sharpness.

BD Wise: BD Wise is Samsung's latest inter-connectivity feature. When you connect Samsung products with BD-Wise to each other via HDMI, the optimum resolution will be set automatically. It will also automatically optimize internet video by boosting image quality to sharpen imagery and ensure text is legible. BD Wise will even resize the video ratio so that video edges are not cropped off.

Bonus View: The Bonus View feature provides picture-in-picture capability with select Blu-ray Disc titles. You can view addition content (such as director/actor commentary) in a small display window while the movie is playing.

Audio Section

5.1Ch Amplifier w/ Crystal Amp Technology: The Samsung HT-J5500W Blu-ray Home Theater System features a 5.1 channel amplifier which delivers 165-watts per channel to the front & rear speakers, and 170-watts per channel to the center-channel & subwoofer speaker. Samsung's Crystal Amp technology filters sound sources twice to minimize distortion and produce clear audio that sounds exactly the way it was meant to be heard. Resulting in audio that's rich, realistic, and accurate.

Surround Modes: The Samsung HT-J5500W can decode Dolby Digital, DTS, and Dolby Pro Logic II surround formats.

Note: 7.1 channel surround formats will be downmixed to 5.1-channels since this system has no surround back speakers.

Sound Modes: You can enjoy various surround sound mode effects. Choose from Cinema (optimized for movies), Music, (suitable for music), Game (designed for gaming), Multi-Stereo (surround from 2-channel sources), Power Bass (bass boosted), Loud (improves sound versus output level), Night (optimized for night time when listening at low volume), and User (provides user adjust EQ).

ARC (Audio Return Channel): This feature allows audio to be sent from your compatible HDTV to the Blu-ray home theater system through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio and video to your HDTV. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to your television.

Note: With most televisions, the ARC-enabled HDMI input will pass Dolby Digital or 2ch PCM from the TV's built-in tuner, network connection, or USB port. However, the ARC-enabled HDMI input can only pass 2ch PCM from devices connected to the TV via HDMI or analog.

Analog + Digital Connections: The Samsung HT-J5500W features both analog (stereo RCA) and digital (optical) audio inputs.

  • Optical Digital Input: The Samsung HW-H5500W is equipped with an optical (toslink) digital input to connect your non-ARC enabled TV, satellite/cable box, or game console. The digital optical output terminals of most newer flat-panel TVs only send an audio signal in 5.1ch when receiving Dolby Digital/DTS surround sound from the TV's built-in tuner, network connection, or connected USB device; and will output only 2ch stereo from sources connected to the TV via HDMI, or RCA (like your Blue-ray/DVD player or satellite/cable box).
  • Aux Input: The Samsung HW-H5500W also features a stereo RCA input to connect your analog television or other analog audio component.

Note: To get the best audio performance out of the Samsung HW-H5500W, use the system's HDMI output and optical digital input to connect your TV and satellite/cable box separately. Connect the system's HDMI output to the ARC-enabled HDMI input on your TV and connect your satellite/cable box directly to the HW-H5500W's optical digital input. By connecting your satellite/cable box directly to the soundbar system, you'll gain Dolby Digital/DTS decoding.

Audio Settings: The Samsung HT-J5500W offers the following audio adjustments.

  • Speaker Setup: You can adjust the level (+/-6 dB) and distance (1-30') of each speaker.
  • DRC: You can use the DRC (Dynamic Range Compression) function to enjoy Dolby Digital sound when watching movies at low volume during the night. DRC compresses the audio to make the loudest sounds quieter and the quietest sounds louder.
  • AV Sync: Video may look slower than the audio if it is connected to a digital TV. If this occurs, you can adjust the audio delay time to match the video. You can adjust the AV Sync from 0 to 300ms (in 25ms increments).

Network & Tuner Functions

Wired & Wireless Network Connection: You can set up the Samsung Blu-ray HT System so that it can access your home network and online Samsung Apps through your local area network (LAN) using a wired connection (RJ-45 Ethernet) or wireless connection (built-in WiFi). You can setup a wired network connection automatically or manually. You can setup the wireless network connection using these four methods; PBC (WPS), Auto Network Search, One Foot, or Manually.

  • Supported WiFi networks include IEEE 802.11 a/b/b/n wireless LAN networks.
  • Security setup types include WEP (open/shared), WPA-PSK (TKIP/AES), and WPA2-PSK (TKIP/AES).

WiFi Direct: When using WiFi Direct, you can connect directly with other devices without using a wireless router. You'll be able to wirelessly transfer personal content (such as photos & videos) to the Samsung Blu-ray Home Theater System without connecting to your home network. WiFi Direct completely bypasses your WiFi access point/router, so it's easy to set up. Streaming of copy-protected content and other certain formats are not supported

Popular Opera TV Store apps include Facebook, Twitter, and more.

This eliminates the need to copy your photo, video, and music files to a separate USB storage device.
Note: For AllShare/DLNA, Windows PCs with XP and Vista installed require Samsung's PC Share Manager software, which can be downloaded for free from the Samsung Download Center. Not compatible with older Windows OS versions and Mac.

BD-Live: BD-Live technology allows you to download and stream bonus content such as additional scenes, shorts, trailers, movie-based games, and more from a broadband internet and home network connections (fees may apply). The HT-J5500W features an Ethernet port and built-in WiFi to connect to the internet via your home network, and features USB (type-A) port for additional storage.

Note: You must have a minimum 1GB USB memory device inserted in the unit's USB slot in order to download content from BD-Live.

Why did you buy this?

It was the largest stand alone home theater system that I could find without spending as much for Bose system as an used car. [ Mark  Feb 15, 2018 ]
I wanted the surround sound without spending a lot of money and I didn't want to spend a lot of time researching all the different speakers and tuners I would need. I new from past experiences Crutchfield would indoctrinate me through their online tutorials or chat with a tech. and that's when I found out there are pre-built systems. I checked other sites for prices and Crutchfield matched the lowest I could fine. [ Audrey  Dec 23, 2017 ]

Looking for a "home theater in a box" with wireless rear speakers. These are actually not TRULY wireless, but it's very hard to find actual wireless rear surround speakers. [ Britt  Oct 28, 2016 ]
Sounds Great and great price [ Michael  Sep 20, 2016 ]
This is the wireless sound system with dvd player that we're looking for. Since we have no local retailer or Video Only (or equivalent) stores in the area we live we decided to look online. This looks and sounds exactly like our choice. Since we will be buying a new TV for our home, too, waiting a few days to receive this system isn't an issue to us. I choose this bluray disc player because of it's streaming capabilities. [ LaShaunna  Mar 24, 2016 ]
I did significant research, after deciding to buy what I consider a value priced home theater system, in lieu of buying an upper level, high-priced system, as I had before, which provided what I concluded was less than expected results, for dollar spent. With new tech features, etc. on the market regularly, I may replace this unit sooner. [ Phil  Mar 19, 2016 ]

First off, and this may not be of help but if you are using a disc that is not 5.1 Dolby(specified in print on the disc) no sound will come out. Also Same for any CD. Using a CD/TV or radio only sound will come out of front speakers only. There are some BluRay discs that will only come out the front speakers only as well.....But if your issue is no sound at all, look at the menu on screen to see what mode you are in...I.E. Din/Aux/DVD etc.....Disc Types your Product cannot Play ? HD DVD ? DVD-ROM/PD/MV-Disc, etc ? DVD-RW(VR mode) ? CVD/CD-ROM/CDV/CDG/CD-I/LD (CD-Gs play audio only, not graphics.) ? DVD-RAM ? Super Audio CD (except CD layer) ? 3.9 GB DVD-R Disc for Authoring..........Disc types and content your Product can Play Media Disc Type Details VIDEO Blu-ray Disc 3D Blu-ray Disc BD-ROM or BD-RE/-R disc recorded in the BD-RE format. DVD-VIDEO, DVD-RW, DVD-R, DVD+RW, DVD+R DVD-VIDEO, recorded DVD+RW/DVD-RW(V)/ DVD-R/+R discs that have been recorded and finalized, or a USB storage media containing MKV, MP4 contents. MUSIC CD-RW/-R, DVD-RW/-R, BD-RE/-R Music recorded on CDRW/-R, DVD-RW/-R, BDRE/-R discs or a USB storage media containing MP3 or WMA contents..........Hope this helps! [ Dallas  May 23, 2017 ]

All speakers have wires going to them. The wireless part is, the rear speakers have a wireless module, so no wires from the main unit to the rear speakers. However, there are wires from the rear module to the rear speakers. [ James  Dec 28, 2016 ]
The 4 front speakers are wired, the 2 rear are wired from a remote receiver that is wireless. [ ARCHA R  Dec 27, 2016 ]
Only the 2 rear speakers are completely wireless. The 2 front speakers and the subwoofer are wired to the main unit. [ Lynn  Dec 27, 2016 ]
No, all the front speakers are wired to the main unit, the rear speakers are wired to a separate box which is wireless. [ Dallas  Dec 26, 2016 ]
The rear ones are wireless and or Bluetooth .the sub and front and center speakers are wired.thay have great sound. [ DARREL  Dec 26, 2016 ]
The back of the Home Entertainment System only has the connections for the front speakers, center speaker and the subwoofer. The rear speakers connect to the wireless Receiver Module. I suppose if you have the correct speaker connectors, you could leave the wireless module where your rear speaker wires start and connect the rear speakers where your wires terminate at, but you have no rear speaker connection at the main unit. I hope this information helps you. Jim O. [ James  Aug 30, 2016 ]
I believe the rear speakers are only wireless. I also had wires for rear speakers, so I connected speakers (from my previous system) to the rear wires, then wired them in series with front speakers at the Samsung system, so when listening to the radio or CD, I had a fuller sound because just the front speakers would normally only play, now I had 4 speakers working. The wireless speakers would kick in when using a DVD or when surround sound was active. Hope this helps, Jim [ JAMES F  Aug 30, 2016 ]
The wireless back speakers are actually wired to a receiver box that receives the wireless signal from the base unit. I suppose you could place that wireless receiver where your connections go into the wall behind your system and then hook the speakers up to the pre-wired connections across the room. Should work the same. The wireless feature of this system simply eliminates the need to run wires across the room. [ CLINTON W  Aug 29, 2016 ]
Yes it is. Just like a Smart TV, you can download load apps, stream videos and music. You can also wirelessly mirror the home theater with a smart phone or tablet. It also has Bluetooth capability. I hope this info has helped in your decision. [ James  Jan 19, 2016 ]
Yes, this is a smart receiver. [ TRISHA  Jan 19, 2016 ]
It has some apps. Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, and YouTube, and the Opera TV store that has 2 or 3 dozen minor movie and video apps. By definition, I guess it is smart TV, but on a limited basis. [ James  Jan 19, 2016 ]
No. [ Lynn  Jan 19, 2016 ]
Yes, you can send the audio from your TV back to the receiver via HDMI-ARC (audio return channel). This feature allows audio to be sent from your TV to the Blu-ray home theater system through the same HDMI cable already being used to connect the Samsung system to your TV. This would also allow you to enjoy 5.1 Netflix content you're watching on your TV in surround sound through the speakers. [ Larry  Nov 18, 2015 ]  Staff
Samsung doesn't provide any detailed information about the center channel speaker used in the HT-J5500W system, but the pictures we have on our site indicate there are 2 woofers built-in to the center channel speaker. You may want to contact Samsung's support at 800-726-7864 for more info on that issue. [ Larry  Oct 30, 2015 ]  Staff
No it will not pass video thru. It does have HDMI out and will use either RCA or optical input for the audio. You must go thru your cable box to the TV first and then provide the audio to the receiver from the TV or the cable box. [ Philip  Aug 25, 2015 ]
Nope. It only has an HDMI output. You have to hook your video source straight to your TV [ Kyle  Aug 25, 2015 ]
I forwarded your question to an Advisor and they responded with the following: Yes, when you go into "Multi-Stereo mode" it gives you the ability to take a 2 channel stereo source and play it back on all speakers. If you would like to discuss further you can contact an Advisor directly by phone (1-800-324-9695) or online chat. [ Krissy  Aug 21, 2015 ]  Staff
