Our take on the Samsung HW-D450

The picture quality of today's HDTVs may be fantastic. But frankly, the sound can be about as flat as the panel. Samsung's HW-D450's dynamic, full-bodied sound will dance pirouettes around your TV's tiny speakers. This sound bar uses built-in Dolby® Digital and DTS® decoding along with virtual surround sound processing to create a wraparound effect that draws you into the action. You'll love the way it brings the soundtracks of DVDs, Blu-ray movies and high-def TV shows to life. You won't even need a receiver or amplifier — this sound bar has built-in amplification to power its six drivers for clear dialogue and spacious, lifelike effects.

Add a little boom to your room
A separate subwoofer rounds out the sound, adding depth to music and bass punch to your favorite action movies. And its wireless design means you can position this sub anywhere in your room. Place the sound bar on a TV stand or cabinet, or mount it on your wall using the included bracket for a neat, finished look. At just 2-1/8" deep, it'll look great below today's ultra-slim flat-panel TVs.

Not just for television
You can also play music through the HW-D450. Connect to the headphone jack of your portable MP3 player and you're all set. And if an iPod® is in your lineup, just add Samsung's wireless control dock for easy access to your tunes.

OK sound for the price but...

StevieD from Saratoga Springs, NY on 1/7/2013

If you have an ulta-thin LED TV with tiny down fired speakers, this bar is a great addition.

Pros: Easy connection, good sub woofer.

Cons: You need the soundbar remote to control the volume as the unit has no codes that can be used by universal remotes - or even the Samsumg TV remotes!

Good sound for a very reasonable cost. It will not duplicate a high end home theater system but I got exactly what I was looking for; a significant improvement to the TV sound without spending a lot of money & with little space or effort required to set it up.

Pros: Good sound Reasonably priced Easy to connect

    Cons: None

    Great performance for the price!

I have quite a small living room and prior to receiving the Samsung I have been using Klipsch bookend speaks. It isn't fair to compare the sound quality between the two as they are in distinctly different categories and price range. The Samsung HW-D450 is a great value and exceeds my expectations. The unit is perfect for my current environment and needs.

Pros: Great product, simple to setup and exceptional sound for the price range.

    Cons: none

Big sound in a small package with wireless owesome woofer

Pros: Installed in no time at all

Cons: Better sound than tv speaker, given life to your tv program

    Installs easily and decent sound

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Added to my 46" TV in the bonus room. Great audio on movies and our Wii. Don't install too close the bottom of the TV, as the controls are all on the top edge and are difficult to see and operate if under the edge of the TV. Two power codrs and the optical input from the TV audio out, and you're set!

Pros: Installed in 20 visible wires...very clean look. Easy to operate.

Cons: Decent sound. Don't expect a full surround-sound experience, but much better than TV speakers.

I guess I'll live with it.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Subwoofer is so wimpy, why did Samsung even bother! The Auto Power feature is nice, but why not have the sound bar turn off as well? Supposed to turn off after 20 min. of no digital input, why not have have it programmed to user preference or a shorter time span? Sound volume bars would be a nice addition. Finally, it's very annoying not to be able read to display when sitting down, and I only have the unit mounted 24" high!

    Great Sound with less clutter

This is a great way to enhance the tv audio without cables and clutter

    Massive Upgrade Over TV Speakers

Wesley Wells from Lake Jackson, TX on 2/25/2012

Exactly as advertised. This is what my tv was missing. They should just include these in the box when you buy a new television. It isn't a surround sound system, so don't expect it to sound like one. It is, however, a great improvement over your factory flat screen tv speakers. You get crisp, clear sound from the bar itself and decent bass from the wireless subwoofer. The overall sound quality is better than I expected. It works great in a bedroom, and I could see it doing well in a small living room. I keep my sub set around +4 and the sound setting on "Cinema." The sub handles explosions in action movies easily, but the bass can become slightly muddy when listening to music. Set up was a breeze with the supplied optical audio cable. It also matches my Samsung 46" LCD tv and Samsung Blu Ray player. I highly recommend the HW-D450 as a flat screen sound upgrade for a small to midsized room.

Pros: Sounds great. Easy installation. Looks good. Makes your movies and television shows sound as good as they look.

Cons: Subwoofer may be a bit weak for a large room. Better suited to tv and movies than music.

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Excellent sound, great with sports and drama. Good for a small area...However, will not program to a direct tv remote and the remote that comes with it will not operate any other tv's ..only SAMSUNG...they do not tell you this when you are looking at the description or function online.

    Great Sound, but one issue

    Josh from Wisconsin on 9/23/2011

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Great sound bar. Adds full sound to a small room that I did not want to add an entire entertainment system. Wireless sub can be places any where. The sound bar is mounted under my TV. Everything is great, except for one little problem. If a device can dim the display, I will always set it to the lowest setting. As I do not want it to draw attention when watching a movie. The sound bar will keep all other settings on turn off turn on cycle, but the display will come on full again. It will not keep the the display on the lower setting. Which all in all is not a big issue, but still an issue. I have other electronic devices that will keep the dimmer settings. Would have been a 5 star review if the sound bar kept the dimmer setting. As usual Crutchfield has done a great job. Great customer support, great prices, quick delivery. Also received a thank you post card in the mail yesterday. Great company that cares about their customers. 5 star review to Crutchfield.

    Great sound for the price

vwgolftx from Austin, TX on 5/21/2011

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

We purchased this as a replacement for our old surround sound system that would have required running wires everywhere. It was very simple to set up using the quick-start guide included. The sound works well with our DVD player and the TV. Haven't tried using an MP3 player w/it yet, however I'm sure it would be fine as well. The sub easily connected when the main unit was turned on. We were able to place it behind a sofa and it still connects just fine. This doesn't give the same full sound as a larger system would, but for watching movies or listening to pandora it works very well. I turned off the auto-on feature because the unit would come back on due to our AT&T box being in an always on type state. Very happy with our purchase overall.

Crystal Surround Air Track (Active Speaker System): The Samsung HW-D450 Crystal Surround Air Track System includes an AudioBar and a wireless powered subwoofer. The Samsung HW-D450 is a 2.1-channel audio system that lets you experience a rich, powerful virtual surround sound from two speakers (AudioBar and wireless powered subwoofer). The slim, compact Samsung HW-D450's AudioBar can be mounted on the wall, while the wireless subwoofer can be placed anywhere in the room to achieve maximum audio performance.

AudioBar: The AudioBar is a self-powered, two-channel speaker which provides enveloping virtual surround sound from a single speaker. The AudioBar includes four 2" midrange drivers and two 0.75" soft-dome tweeters housed in a bass-reflex, gloss-black cabinet with two rear-firing ports (the speaker contains no grille). The AudioBar features a built-in 80 watts x 2-channel digital amplifier to drive its speakers. The AudioBar is designed to be mounted directly below or above your flat-panel HDTV in a horizontal orientation. The AudioBar can be placed on a shelf or table-top. The AudioBar also includes a wall-mount bracket which allows you to fix the speaker to your wall. The Audio Bar includes analog audio and digital audio connections.

    • Dual Digital Audio Inputs: Two optical digital inputs; comes with a 5' optical digital cable.
    • Analog Audio Input: One stereo audio minijack (3.5mm) input; comes with a 5' stereo mini-to-RCA cable.

Wireless Powered Subwoofer: The wireless powered subwoofer receives its low-frequency audio signal wirelessly from the AudioBar via 5.8GHz transmission. There are no cords to connect, except the AC power cord. You can place the wireless powered subwoofer up to 33' away from the Audiobar. The wireless powered subwoofer features a side-firing 6" woofer inside a bass-reflex, gloss-black cabinet with a rear-firing port. The 6" woofer is powered by a built-in 120 watt amplifier. You can independently adjust the volume of the wireless powered subwoofer from 1 to 6, using the system's remote controls.

Surround Sound Decoding: The Samsung HW-D450 Crystal Surround Air Track System employs decoders compatible with Dolby Digital, DTS, and SFE.

    • Dolby Digital: This is the standard audio signal format used on DVDs, and other purely digital media. This surround technology delivers high-quality digital audio of up to 5.1 discrete channels to produce a directional and more realistic effect.
    • DTS: DTS provides a discrete 5.1 channel digital audio signal for both music and movie content and uses less compression than Dolby Digital for richer sound.
    • SFE (Sound Field Effect): Using a 32-bit audio digital signal processor the HW-D450 provides a more realistic surround sound with normal stereo audio source. The Samsung HW-D450 offers 7 different sound field modes (News, Drama, Sports, Game, Cinema, Music, and Pass/Original Sound).

3D Depth Sound: The 3D sound feature adds depth and spaciousness to your listening experience.

AV Sync: AV Sync can be used to help sync video to audio when connected to a digital HDTV. Video may look slower than the audio if it is connected to a digital TV. If this occurs, you can adjust the audio delay time to match the video. You can adjust the AV Sync from 0 to 300ms.

DRC: You can use the DRC (Dynamic Range Compression) function to enjoy Dolby Digital sound when watching movies at low volume during the night. DRC compresses the audio to make the loudest sounds quieter and the quietest sounds louder.

Smart Volume: This function will regulate and stabilize the volume level against a drastic volume change in case of a channel change or scene transition.

Remote Control: The included IR remote control provides wireless operation of the Samsung HW-D450 system and can also be used to control your connected Samsung TV. The remote control has a TV hotkey that enables you to perform various operations with the simple press of a button. You can adjust the volume, change the channel, or customize the navigation menu of your Samsung TV.

Optional Wireless iPod Dock: The HW-D450 supports Samsung's wireless iPod/iPhone dock (305HTWDC10, sold separately). The optional wireless iPod/iPhone dock lets you listen to your iPod or iPhone's stored music through the Samsung Crystal Surround Air Track System.

ENERGY STAR Compliant: By being ENERGY STAR compliant you are assured that this Samsung product is helping the environment by using less energy while saving you money. ENERGY STAR is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy promoting energy efficiency

Software Upgrades: Samsung may offer upgrades for the system's firmware in the future. Upgrades will be possible by downloading firmware upgrades to a USB thumbdrive and connecting the thumbdrive to the AudioBar's rear-panel USB port (service/firmware only).
