Our take on the Samsung HW-E450

The picture quality of today's HDTVs is fantastic. But frankly, the sound can be about as flat as the panel. Samsung's HW-E450's dynamic, full-bodied sound will dance pirouettes around your TV's tiny speakers. This sound bar uses virtual surround sound processing to create a wraparound effect that draws you into the action. You'll love the way it brings the soundtracks of DVDs, Blu-ray movies and high-def TV shows to life. You won't even need a receiver or amplifier — this sound bar has built-in amplification to power its six drivers for clear dialogue and spacious, lifelike effects.

Add a little boom to your room

A separate subwoofer rounds out the sound, adding depth to music and bass punch to your favorite action movies. And its wireless design means you can position this sub anywhere in your room. Place the sound bar on a TV stand or cabinet, or mount it on your wall using the included bracket for a neat, finished look. At just 2" deep, it'll look great below today's ultra-slim flat-panel TVs.

Not just for television

You can also play music through the HW-E450. Built-in Bluetooth® lets you stream your playlist directly from your compatible smartphone, tablet or laptop computer. You can also use the back-panel USB input to enjoy music files from your thumb drive.

    Sounds great

    Larry from Minneapolis on 7/4/2013

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The TV's sound quality is so much better with the sound bar. It really fills the room. It's nice to be able to use Bluetooth and USB memory sticks as sources too. Instruction manual has some less than complete information but if you have set up other sound systems this one probably will not be hard. Being a novice, I ended up going to a audio/video forum to get some of my questions answered. Now that I know something about "modern" a/v, the setup seems simple.

Pros: Great sound. Small profile. Multiple sources.

Cons: Instructions not verbose enough for this beginner. Simulated surround sound is a little off sometimes.

    Can't cover me

Joe A from Queens NY on 4/8/2013

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The sound bar is great I happy to own it. The sub - woofer is a bit of a disappointment. I don have a corner in my room. Well of course I do but one has a steam radiator and the other is next to a wall unit. So I'm really not getting the best from the sub- woofer unless I really turn it up . Eighteen and higher. When I do it smile time. Worth every penny. I'm a shopper and this unit is the best pop for the money

Pros: Price quality and looks . Nice to show it off. I have another sound bar and it ugly by comparison ,cost more and doesn't have the sound.

Cons: Sound bar takes twenty minutes to shut off unless you do it manually

Exactly what I was looking for

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Ordered this instead of similar Polk system and I'm glad I did. Looks great mounted under my 40" Samsung TV. The TV is mounted to the wall on a swiveling mount so I used sound bar backets to hang it directly under the TV. Exposed speaker drivers looks great! Sounds is better than I expected and the sub is sufficient. As long as you do not expect it to replace or compete with a true 5.1 or 7.1 system this bar . No issues with wireless Internet interference. The only con is minor and is an issue with any sound at I expect. Highly recommend this unit.

Pros: Looks great Easy setup HDMI or optical cable options Integration with Samsung TVs (AnyNet) works well, syncs the TV volume control to the sound bar

Cons: The HDMI configuration allows for use of AnyNet and turns off the bar when the TV goes off but does not turn on the bar with the TV. The optical cable option will turn on and off with the TV but no sync the volume. So neither cable gives you all three. No big deal if you have a universal or smart remote. I've got it working perfectly with HDMI using a Harmony remote and some delays built in startup.

    Dont Bother

john from washington crossing, nj on 2/24/2013

My brother warned me about wireless woofers but I ignored him . I figured it would complement my Samsung wide screen, well it didn't . The wooffer sounded horrible at all times. The speakers in the sound bar blew after one year. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY.

    Pros: Nothing

    Cons: Everything

    Review for Samsung HW-E450

    FrankM from Albuquerque,NM on 2/6/2013

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Received this with my Samsung UN46ES8000 purchase. Sound is good but the setup was very frustrating because for some strange reason a simple setup is not possible if one wants the ES8000 remote control to be used for both units. IMHO Samsung really messed this up. After much trial and error, I wound up with both an optical and an HDMI /ARC with Anynet+ on connections. With this setup I can control the volume with the TV remote and turn the E450 off but it will not turn on with the TV. After reading through several support forums on this issue it appears that some LG TV remotes work just fine with the E450. Go figure.....

    Samsung sound bar

Ashley203 from Oceanside CA on 2/5/2013

I don't know if people are using this in a huge room or are incompetent. Good price, great sound in a 12x12 bedroom. Full sound with dramatic bass. I've had it for almost 2 years, no issues. Super simple instructions. Took 3 extra minutes to figure out how to sink the tv. All in all you will be hard pressed to find a more cost effective solution.

Pros: Price Bass Easy setup No receiver needed

Cons: It's a low cost sound bar with easy setup. If you want something that will take a few hrs to setup, cost the price of a mortgage, yeah there's better out there.

    Nice and clean!

Barry from Sunrise,, FL on 1/1/2013

I got this piece when I bought my pc and led monitor. Sound is clean and clear, all you need to do is adjust the soundeffect/eq setting for the type of sound you would like to use (i.e. more treble, mid, or bass). The bass adjustment is a nice feature matched with an easy setup make gets this unit crackin'.

Pros: Nice features, easy setup and good sound.

Cons: Bigger woofer (7-8 in.) would give a little more drop.

Great upgrade if you want to improve the sound quality! The glossy black sound bar matches my Glossy black Samsung TV. It looks great together and the sound is awesome. From reading some of the reviews I was hesitate but am glad I ordered this sound bar. Well worth the money!

Pros: Much improved sound bluetooth wireless sub glossy black finish

Cons: would be nice if the speakers in the sound bar had grills to protect them Having trouble getting my TIVO remote to control the volume but this may be an issue that I may have to figure out with TIVO

    Good Job Samsung.

Steve1971 from Saint Paul, MN on 12/14/2012

My wife bought this for me yesterday as a replacement for an old out of date Av Surround Sound system. This is my first Soundbar and to be honest I wasnt expecting to much but when I set it all up I was pleasently surprised. First setup was very easy and very simple to hook up. Once done I was very surprise at how well the sound was. I mean by no means is this a full blown 5.1 or 7.1 sound but if you set it to 3D surround it envelopes you and makes you feel part of the program you are watching. Voices and sounds come through loud and clear and the Subwoofer provides just the right amount of Bass. This is the perfect sound bar for a small room setup which I currently have. I would say my only beef is the remote control which does not control anything when it comes to my Sony HX750 HDTV but thats ok because Samsung makes it very clear that it wont control features of a tv unless its a Samsung tv which I refuse to ever buy. Also Samsung doesnt provide an optical cable which I think is wrong as well. This is the only reason why I didnt give it a 5 star rateing, the remote could have been better and they should have included an optical cable. That being said anyone looking for great sound and great Bass for a small room setup then go with the Samsung HW-E450 Soundbar. Its well worth the money.

Pros: Easy setup and great sound and Bass, Slim stylish design. Perfect fit for todays slim HDTV's and small room setup.

Cons: Remote could have been better and Samsung should have included Optical Cable.

    No wonder it was free

EricP from Springfeld, Mo on 10/29/2012

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Glad it was free with my TV purchase because it's not worth the price. First one I got was faulty and had an overheat problem before I ever used it. You can't use the aux cable it comes with to connect to your tv because it's opposite inputs. So you have to buy a different cable. The sound quality is mediocre and doesn't handle music with mild bass very well.

Pros: Got it free, increases volume.

    Cons: everything else.

Will not synch with Universal Remotes

MDO from Houston, TX on 10/13/2012

I bought this Samsung soundbar to enhance my Samsung TV. However, after installing it I found that it won't synch to turn on with my Direct TV remote. The way it requires the HDMI cable to route, the TV won't recieve a signal unless the soundbar is on. Very annoying to have to now use a second remote. Therefore, I purchased a universal Logitech Harmony 650 Remote. It won't work with that either. I'm giving up and buying a different Soundbar. The sound was mediocre at best, and it isn't worth the remote headaches.

    Pros: None

Cons: Won't synch with remotes to turn on. Sound isn't great.

    L.B.Sloan from Garland , Texas on 8/27/2012

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

The Audio levels were so poor on my new 47 inch Led TV and I did not want to get yet another receiver I decided a soundbar would be the best solution for me. I had heard and read that the subwoofers were totally inadequate for large rooms. Since this tv was doing into the master bedroom I was not too concerned about booming bass. I could not be more pleased with the soundbar for this purpose. If this setup was for a large Living Room or Den f' get about it and the Bass is more than acceptable for my purpose. The bar provides clear, crisp dialog and the bass is more than enough for the explosions and car chases. Classical music on the Dish channels is so-so but that was not intended to be the primary source, but it"s great for the Sports channels. As always dealing with Crutchfield was a walk in the park.Three days enroute and it was at my front door. Now all I have to do is pay for it...but not too much!!!!! Thanks Crutchfield

Pros: Great shipping...... competitive price..and it works...easy is good

    Cons: None

    Not a Big Improvement

    Bill from NC on 8/13/2012

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This was included free with my Samsung PN64E8000 64 inch plasma television. I guess you get what you pay for. The quality was only slightly better than the television. Had I actually paid money for this I would have returned it. As with the Samsung television the included manual was poor at best. It took 2 calls to Crutchfield tech support to get the sound bar connected to the television. I still haven't located the information in the included manual that tech support provided to me so I'm guessing Samsung failed to include it in the manual. One feature the manual does mention is the sound bar should automatically come on when the television is turned on. However, this has not happened for me. I need to physically walk over to the sound bar and press the very small on/off button on the back of it to turn it on. It does however, turn off when the television is turned off. When adjusting the volume on the television there's a number that shows what the volume is. When the sound bar is functioning there's is no number to use as a reference. The sound quality is better than the televsion but not by much. I'd be just as happy without the soundbar. In fact I probably won't be using it as it's too much of a bother to turn on each time I want to use it.

    Pros: None

    Cons: Poor sound quality

    Clean and functional

Bobby NY from Brooklyn, NY on 7/3/2012

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Out of the box its very functional and easy to use. It looks great. But fragile because the speakers are open to the environment. Meaning if you have kids who like to touch they could damage the tweeters very easily. The audio is very clear. Not loud and theater like but a wonderful addition if your not interested in a 5.1 surround sound system. The bass is really not there. The sub adds substance but little else. The sub on my computer speakers are better and its half the size and cost me 70$ years ago. So NO earth shattering bass.

Pros: Style, ease of use, good addition to a small room. great to finally be able to hear the audio out of my tv.

    Cons: Bass is minimal.

    Kick's It Up A Notch

DJE from Raleigh, NC on 4/19/2012

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

If you are looking to upgrade the sound quality from a flat screen without a lot of connections and "footprint", then this system will get the job done. If you are looking for room filling sound with "bone vibrating" bass--you will need to spend more $$. The wireless powered sub provides some deep accents but not much punch. The bar itself provides much better tonal voice reproduction with moderate mid-range support. Connections are super easy and if connecting to a Samsung, the "Anynet" feature works to integrate the system in one remote. Overall, not bad for the money.

Pros: Easy connnections, small footprint, Samsung integration

Cons: Weak Bass response, No cover grill on soundbar speakers.

    Inferior Product, Inept Support

Mike G from Copley, OH on 4/17/2012

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought this to go with my Samsung PN51D6500 TV assuming that the inferface would be seamless. I was wrong. The Samsung TV has some very good audio controls, including a 5 band equalizer and more importantly a "True Dialogue" mode which emphasizes speech and drops everything else into the background. Even when the TV audio output is set to "TV speakers" this controlled output is not what goes to the sound bar. It gets the raw audio signal from the cable source. While this is technically a fault of the Samsung TV, the sound bar has no similar tuning features available. There are six "sound effect" modes available but nothing in the Samsung literature or website gives any indication of what these modes do and none of their tech support people had a clue about this or much of anything else. I spent the first 3 hours I owned this thing on the phone with various techies from Samsung but their TV people know nothing about sound bars and their sound bar people know nothing about TVs and none of them know how to get them to work together. It makes no sense whatsoever to build innovative features into the TV and design a sound bar which negates those features. On top of that I found the sound quality to be fair at best, only slightly better than the TV speakers. It basically offered nothing but volume. I returned this the next day in exchange for another brand. I am on the whole so unhappy with the experience that I will probably not deal with Samsung again

Pros: I honestly have nothing good to say about this unit

Cons: Lack of control features, poor sound quality, laughably bad tech support

    Great product

    AndreaC from KW on 4/14/2012

Just bought it tonight. Very easy to set up and sounds great. Doesn't take up too much space and has nice clean lines. Awesome value and product for the price.

Pros: Easy to set up, looks nice.

    Cons: None.

    Samsung HWE450

HOPEA from Leesburg, FL on 4/6/2012

    Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I bought 2 for gifts. I was surprised at what a good, solid sound this had and how good the sub interacted with the bar for the price. The height of the bar fits nicely in front of the tv without taking tv area away and if a tv stand is limited space , it fits. Usually a sub has an id number to match with the bar, but it has a hole in the back that a paper clip or bic pens is inserted and removed to sync the sub with the bar. The remote works great, but the unit does not learning remote to a cable box or satellite. Not a big thing for some.3D effect is a nice feature. iT IS A SOLID SYSTEM, EASY TO USE AND THE SOUND IS VERY GOOD FOR A SMALL LIVING ROOM OR BEDROOM, but it lacks some sound depth for larger rooms or for those who like to adjust treble. Only the bass can be adjusted. For those who want a vast improvement over tv sound and live in apartments etc , it is a simple good budget system. mY GIVERS WERE PLEASED and I liked the thing for music and cinema effect and 3D effect.

Pros: Size, sound, remote and price

Cons: Samsung did not include 2 hdmi cables or optical cord, must buy.. Could be a deal braker for some.

Crystal Surround Air Track (Active Speaker System): The Samsung HW-E450 Crystal Surround Air Track System includes an AudioBar and a wireless powered subwoofer. The Samsung HW-E450 is a 2.1-channel audio system that lets you experience a rich, powerful virtual surround sound from two speakers (AudioBar and wireless powered subwoofer). The slim, compact Samsung HW-E450's AudioBar can be mounted on the wall or placed on a table-top, while the wireless subwoofer can be positioned anywhere in the room to achieve maximum audio performance.

AudioBar: The AudioBar is a self-powered, two-channel speaker which provides enveloping virtual surround sound from a single speaker. The AudioBar includes four 2" midrange drivers and two 0.75" soft-dome tweeters housed in a bass-reflex, gloss-black cabinet with two rear-firing ports (the speaker contains no grille). The AudioBar features a built-in 80 watts x 2-channel digital amplifier to drive its speakers. The AudioBar is designed to be mounted directly below or above your flat-panel HDTV in a horizontal orientation. The AudioBar can be placed on a shelf or table-top. The AudioBar also includes a wall-mount bracket which allows you to fix the speaker to your wall. The Audio Bar includes analog audio and digital audio/video connections.

Wireless Powered Subwoofer: The wireless powered subwoofer receives its low-frequency audio signal wirelessly from the AudioBar via 5.8GHz transmission. There are no cords to connect, except the AC power cord. You can place the wireless powered subwoofer up to 33' away from the AudioBar. The wireless powered subwoofer features a side-firing 6" woofer inside a bass-reflex, gloss-black cabinet with a rear-firing port. The 6" woofer is powered by a built-in 120 watt amplifier.

Surround Sound Decoding: The Samsung HW-E450 Crystal Surround Air Track System employs decoders compatible with Dolby Digital, DTS, and SFE.

    • Dolby Digital: This is the standard audio signal format used on DVDs, and other purely digital media. This surround technology delivers high-quality digital audio of up to 5.1 discrete channels to produce a directional and more realistic effect.
    • DTS: DTS provides a discrete 5.1 channel digital audio signal for both music and movie content and uses less compression than Dolby Digital for richer sound.
    • SFE (Sound Field Effect): Using a 32-bit audio digital signal processor the HW-E450 provides a more realistic surround sound with normal stereo audio source. The Samsung HW-E450 offers 7 different sound field modes (News, Drama, Sports, Game, Cinema, Music, and Off/Original Sound).

3D Depth Sound: The 3D sound feature adds depth and spaciousness to your listening experience.

Smart Volume: This function will regulate and stabilize the volume level against a drastic volume change in case of a channel change or scene transition.

AV Sync: AV Sync can be used to help sync video to audio when connected to a digital HDTV. Video may look slower than the audio if it is connected to a digital TV. If this occurs, you can adjust the audio delay time to match the video. You can adjust the AV Sync from 0 to 300ms.

DRC: You can use the DRC (Dynamic Range Compression) function to enjoy Dolby Digital sound when watching movies at low volume during the night. DRC compresses the audio to make the loudest sounds quieter and the quietest sounds louder.

Subwoofer Level: You can independently adjust the volume of the wireless powered subwoofer from 1 to 6, using the system's remote control.

Speaker Selection: This function enables you to select between listening to audio from your TV or audio from the Air Track system when connected via HDMI.

Remote Control: The included IR remote control provides wireless operation of the Samsung HW-E450 system and can also be used to control your connected Samsung TV. The remote control has a TV hotkey that enables you to perform various operations with the simple press of a button. You can adjust the volume or change the channel on the Samsung TV.

Anynet+: Anynet+ is a convenient feature that offers linked operation with other Samsung components that have the Anynet+ feature, and lets you control those products with one Samsung remote control. To operate this function, you must connect Samsung HW-E450 Crystal Surround Air Track System to an Anynet+ Samsung TV using an HDMI cable.

Power Link: The Crystal Surround Air Track system is automatically turned on when you turn on your TV or any device connected to the Air Track  system with an optical cable.

Auto Off:  If a TV or any device connected to the Crystal Surround Air Track System is off and there is no audio signal, the Air Track system will turn off after 20 minutes.

HDMI Input/Output (with ARC): The AudioBar of the Samsung HW-E450 Crystal Surround Air Track System is fitted with an HDMI input and HDMI output. HDMI transmits video and audio signals simultaneously for a simpler connection, and provides a clearer picture and better sound. The unit's HDMI output also supports the ARC function. This allows you to connect your Blu-ray/DVD player or satellite/cable box directly to the system's HDMI input and connect the system's HDMI output to your television for audio from the Crystal Surround Air Track System or your TV.

Note: Your television must also be ARC compatible for this function to work.

Optical Digital Input: The Samsung HW-E450 Crystal Surround Air Track System's AudioBar is equipped with an optical (toslink) digital input to connect your television, Blu-ray/DVD player, or satellite/cable box.

AUX Input: The Samsung HW-E450's AudioBar features a stereo audio minijack (3.5mm) input to connect your analog television or other analog audio component.

USB Port: You can connect and play music files from external USB mass storage class devices; such as MP3 players or USB thumbrives, using the AudioBar's side-panel USB (type-A) port and included USB extension cable.  The HW-E450 supports USB (msc) devices formatted in FAT16 or FAT32 with MP3 (8-320) or WMA (56-128) music files. You can control basic playback functions; such as Play/Pause, Fast-Forward/Backward, and Repeat/Random.

Bluetooth A2DP: The Samsung Crystal Surround Air Track System features built-in Bluetooth for wireless audio streaming. You can wirelessly stream audio from your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone or MP3 player to the Samsung HW-E450 and enjoy music with high quality stereo sound, all without wires. The HW-E450 provides not control over your Bluetooth-enabled device; you will continue to control your music from your Bluetooth-enabled smartphone or MP3 player.

Note: Due to the differences in Bluetooth technology, some Bluetooth enabled devices may be incompatible, function improperly, or may not support all features when used with the Samsung HW-E450.

Software Upgrades: Samsung may offer upgrades for the system's firmware in the future. Upgrades will be possible by downloading firmware upgrades to a USB thumbdrive and connecting the thumbdrive to the AudioBar's USB port.
