Overview

Our take on the Samsung LN-R329D

Samsung builds LCD displays in all shapes and sizes, but the "9" series models like the LN-R329D employ their most advanced TV panel technology. One of Samsung's main design goals was to get as close as possible to re-creating the best picture quality aspects of top-quality tube TVs — high contrast, deep black level, and smooth motion. Mission accomplished.

NFL and Samsung

Samsung builds LCD displays in all shapes and sizes, but the "9" series models like the LN-R329D employ their most advanced TV panel technology. One of Samsung's main design goals was to get as close as possible to re-creating the best picture quality aspects of top-quality tube TVs — high contrast, deep black level, and smooth motion. Mission accomplished.

Samsung did it by achieving an ultra-quick "pixel response" time (the time it takes for each pixel to go from fully on to fully off). This set's pixels switch twice as fast as most LCD panels, virtually eliminating the smearing effect of motion lag that's visible on many LCD screens. And if you're tired of seeing "LCD black" that's really more of a dark gray, you'll love the LN-R329D's deep, dark blacks. The picture has tremendous punch, thanks to the 3000:1 contrast ratio — excellent for an LCD TV.

The versatile back-panel "jack pack" includes several inputs for high-resolution sources, including two HD-compatible component video inputs. For future-readiness, there's an HDMI input for use with the growing number of HD tuners and "upconverting" DVD players that use this digital connection. The LN-R329D is a dual-mode display, so you can connect your computer, too. Use the Picture-in-Picture feature to simultaneously surf channels and surf the Web.

What A Great TV!!!

Wayne from Boston, MA on 1/23/2006

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have had this TV for about almost two weeks now and I have not found anything to complain about. The video quality is remarkable and the audio is fantastic for speakers that are hidden out of the way, they put out a great sound.

I have and do substantial research before I make big purchases like this. Whether it is customer reviews or experts' reviews, I try and find as much as I can about the product.
At first I was going to order the Sony KLVS32A10. Once I saw the Samsung next to the Sony, I did some more research on the Sony and found out it was not that good. Samsung has PIP, blacks are truly black, HDTV tuner built in and a much faster image response time for about the same price as the Sony. Even if you were to look at the Sony Bravia, the Samsung is far more superior for $700 less.

I have read some of the other reviews and I do not see the viewing angle to be bad, I am able to stand almost next to the TV and still see a great picture. The other complaint, "Not quite Right" - about the selectable aspect, you can change this. The manual for the TV is pretty thick (contains many languages), but if you play around enough and scan the owner's manual, you will find out some good things about this TV.

I would highly recommend this TV, it has easy hook up, great picture and a great sound for a reasonable price. What more could you ask for.

Great LCD TV

TV from Sacramento, CA on 1/11/2006

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I have had the 32 inch for about two weeks now. I am returning it for the 26 inch, but overall I think the TV is great. The TV was very easy to set up and I can't wait to get the HD package from direct TV. My only complaint is the power on/off sound. I realize this is a small detail, but it is extremely annoying. Why Samsung would have this feature is beyond me. I'm wondering if there is a way to turn this feature off. Anyone?

[Editor's Note: The On/Off Melody can be disabled. Press the MENU button to display the menu. Press the UP/DOWN buttons to select "Sound," then press theh ENTER button. Press the UP/DOWN buttons to select "Melody," then press the ENTER button. Press the UP/DOWN buttons to select "On" or "Off," then press the ENTER button. Press the EXIT button to exit.]

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This is an excellent LCD television and Randy, I understand how you may feel about HD for right now, but once High Definition is completely in place for everyone, you will really appreciate this set and for anyone else who may be interested in purchasing this television. I on the other hand currently have what I need to at least appreciate some of what this television can do, but some of us cannot appreciate it until you step it up and buy the proper accessories for all HD TVs.

Meanwhile, before you decide to purchase a HD TV make certain you ask the wonderful staff at Crutchfield all the things you will need before you make your final purchase. And talk to the cable companies; not all subsribers have HD available in there area. But if you do and you have the proper cables, you can get a taste of this nice LCD TV.

I personally will and have already recommended this television to several of my friends. Great job Samsung and thanks again staff at Crutchfield.

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

I agree with Randy, Sacramento, CA on December 26, 2005, viewing angle is about 45 degree and not as clamed 170 or so.
I went to my local electronics store and compared side by side Samsung 32" High Definition LCD TV LNR329D, Sharp 32" 16:9 High Definition LCD Television and Sony 32" High Definition XBR LCD TV. Samsung had the lowest viewing angle. Sony was the best. Angle was wide!
Now I am thinking to return mine Samsung.
Not quite right

Randy from Sacramento, CA on 12/26/2005

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

First, I had no problems with the order or delivery or with Crutchfield's web site.

As for the TV, it has a great picture when you are viewing straight on. As you move off center, the colors start to wash out. When you get out to 45 degrees, the colors are very faded (flesh tones are almost white). I compared this to several models at stores and didn't see the same level of color fade. There is some on all LCD sets, but not as much as this one. Even on cheaper models.

The next problem I have is with the selectable aspect ratios for digital broadcasts. I don't have cable or satellite, just an antenna. When I select a digital broadcast (HD), I only get a 4:3 picture on the 16:9 setting. I still get the column box. On my Mitsubishi, I can choose a stretch view and have the picture fill the screen, but not on the Samsung. If I change to the old NTSC (SD) broadcast, I can stretch it to fill the 16:9 screen. When there is a true HDTV broadcast, the picture is very nice. DVDs also look good on this set as long as you can sit right in front.

The last complaint I have is with the power light. When the set is turned off, there is a large ring around the power button that lights up blue. If you put this in your bedroom, as I have, this is a very bright light.

Other minor annoyances are the remote is not back lit and the sound balance does not work. I still find I ave to adjust the volume on each channel.

I am near the end of my 30 day trial period. I am still deciding if I will return this set.
Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Received my new Samsung LN-R329D with prepaid shipping from Crutchfield. I went to my local cable company and exchanged my current digital converter to the newer Motorla DCT6200. I also purchased a complete cable set which included heavy shielded audio and composite video cables. The Samsung was very easy to interface with the new converter and turn-on initialization was simple and quick. The picture quality in high definition is excellent, far exceeding my expectations. The build quality of the TV is also excellent. Audio hook up to my stereo sound system was easily accomplished. Thank you Crutchfied and thank you Samsung

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

Once out of the box, set-up was a snap! The picture is great just connected to standard cable. I'm sure with HDTV and digital cable it would be superb. Great colors and the black level is super! DVD's look fantastic on this screen. It's my first LCD TV and I have to say that I am very happy with this Samsung model!

Fantastic Picture Quality/Rich Blacks

vcasdia from Seaford, NY on 9/5/2005

Crutchfield Customer Review (What's this?)

This TV is EXCELLENT. Picture quality is superb, especially for an LCD product. Blacks are the best I've seen on an LCD screen. I have a high-end Mitsubishi 65" HDTV in my den home theater and have always stayed on the leading edge of audio/video technology, including laser disk in its day, and highly recommend this Samsung HDTV. Great product.

I love this television!! I know nothing about electronics, yet found the setup extremely easy - pretty much plug and play. I only have analog cable - I haven't switched to digital yet, but the picture is still great, nice and crisp, and the resolution on dvds is fantastic. I would definitely recommend this tv.

Features

HDTV (ATSC) Tuner: The TV has a built-in over-the-air HDTV (ATSC) tuner, so you don't have to purchase a separate digital set-top box to receive and decode over-the-air HDTV/SDTV signals.

Display Resolution: The LN-R329D has a display resolution of 1366 x 768. The unit will accept 1080i, 720p, 480i and 480p signals, and has a built-in image "scaler" to handle a variety of digital and analog audio/video sources. The "scaler" converts the signals from all video sources to match the LCD panel's native 768p resolution.

High Contrast Ratio: The contrast ratio of this unit is 3000:1, which gives you brilliant brightness and contrast for superior picture and detail from both PC and TV images.

Digital Natural Image Engine (DNIe): Samsung's exclusive Digital Natural Image engine makes the sharpest and clearest images possible, regardless of the profile of input signals:

 • Motion Optimizer: fast-moving images are optimized to produce more natural-looking motion, thus reducing video noise or blurring

 • Contrast Enhancer: brightness and contrast levels are enhanced for deeper, richer blacks with greater detail, and more natural whites

 • Detail Enhancer: DNIe analyzes video signal elements in order to produce sharper detail, clearer image separation and more natural edge transition

 • Color Optimizer: colors are reproduced with a more lifelike realism, whites are more accurate, and skin tones are given a more natural hue

 • My Color Control: Samsung's patented "My Color Control" technology allows you to control specific colors without affecting the whole screen. Now, Samsung provides six-color control selections: white, red, pink, yellow, green and blue.

10-bit Processing: Samsung's 10-bit processing method produces 3.2 billion lifelike colors to ensure a more natural and vivid picture and aids in video signal processing of analog sources.

Picture Modes: You can choose one of the following picture modes:

 • Standard: resets the standard factory settings
 • Dynamic: for viewing the TV during the day, or when there is bright light in the room
 • Movie: for viewing the TV in low light, or when playing video games
 • Custom: allows you to adjust and store the following settings: contrast, brightness, sharpness, color, tint, and color tone

Picture Sizes: You can choose one of the following picture sizes:

 • 16:9: sets the picture to 16:9 wide mode

 • Panorama: use this mode for the wide aspect ratio of a panoramic picture

 • Zoom 1: magnifies the size of the picture and allows you to move the enlarged picture using the arrows on the remote

 • Zoom 2: magnifies the size of the picture more than Zoom 1 and allows you to move the enlarged picture using the arrows on the remote

 • 4:3: sets the picture to 4:3 normal mode

PC Display: The PC input allows you to connect a personal computer with a D-Sub 15-pin output, allowing you to use the TV as a high-resolution computer monitor. In PC mode, you can adjust the following picture quality settings: Coarse and Fine, both of which allow you to remove picture noise.

Electronic Program Guide: The TV has an "Electronic Program Guide" to help you navigate through all the possible viewing options. The guide supplies information, such as program lists, start and end times of all available channels. In addition, detailed information about the program is often available in the guide.

Reminder List: If you have made a scheduled viewing list of programs you would like to see, the channel will be automatically switched to the scheduled program at the scheduled time even if you are watching another program.

Picture-In-Picture (PIP): The Picture-In-Picture feature allows you to simultaneously watch two video sources (such as a TV, VCR, or DVD), or watch one video source while using the PC input. The TV has only one tuner, so you cannot watch two TV channels at the same time. There are three PIP views: two side-by-side split screens or a small window inside of the full screen. The small PIP window can be moved to any of the screen's four corners.

Picture Freeze: This feature allows you to freeze an image on the screen from a video source or PC. This feature can only be activated from the remote control.

Digital Signal Strength Meter: The digital signal strength meter can be used to help you find the antenna position that delivers the highest HDTV digital signal strength.

Analog Channel Fine Tuning: The fine tuning feature allows you to manually adjust analog channels for optimal reception. A separate fine tuning setting may be put into the TV's memory for each analog channel.

Low Noise Amplifier (LNA): When the TV's antenna setting is on "Air", instead of "Cable", sometimes reception can be improved by boosting the incoming signal using the LNA function. A separate LNA setting may be put into the TV's memory for each channel.

Auto Volume: Auto volume automatically adjusts the volume of the desired channel by lowering the sound output when the modulation signal is high or by raising the sound output when the modulation signal is low.

Digital Noise Reduction: If the broadcast signal received by your TV is weak, you can activate the Digital Noise Reduction feature to help reduce any static and ghosting that may appear on the screen.

Sound Settings: You can choose from the following sound settings:

 • Standard: resets the standard factory settings

 • Music: for watching music videos and concerts

 • Movie: for watching movies

 • Speech: for watching a show that is mostly dialogue

 • Custom: allows you to adjust the 5-band EQ, which includes the following frequencies: 100 Hz, 300 Hz, 1 kHz, 3 kHz, and 10 kHz

 • SRS TruSurround XT: TruSurround is a patented SRS technology that solves the problem of playing 5.1 multichannel content over two speakers. TruSurround delivers a compelling, virtual surround sound experience through the two speaker internal playback system. It is fully compatible with all multi-channel formats.

Sleep Timer: The sleep timer switches the television off after a specified amount of time. The sleep timer can be set to 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, or 180 minutes.

On/Off Timer: The On/Off timer allows you to program the television to turn itself on and off by selecting a specific on time and a specific off time. You can also choose the "On Timer Channel" and "On Timer Volume."

Brightness Sensor: The front-panel brightness sensor adjusts the screen brightness automatically depending on the surrounding lighting conditions.

Anynet: The LN-R329D features Anynet, an A/V network system to automatically control compatible Samsung audio/video devices through the Anynet menu via the TV's remote control.

Mounting Options

Detachable Stand: The LN-R329D comes with a vertical stand for easy placement on top of a counter or table. On the stand, the TV cannot be tilted or swiveled.

Wall Mounting Option: For wall mounting, an optional wall-mount bracket is available from the manufacturer.

VESA Mounting Bracket Standard: The TV also has 4 mounting holes on the back for an optional wall-mount bracket. The spacing of the mounting holes is VESA 200mm x 200mm, in accordance with the industry standards set by the Video Electronics Standards Association. The mounting holes accommodate M6 screws.

Kensington Lock: When mounting the monitor in a public place, you can secure it with an optional anti-theft device called a Kensington Lock. This TV has a slot on the rear panel to accommodate a Kensington Lock device.

Remote Control

Multibrand Remote: The supplied remote is pre-programmed to operate this unit and a number of functions on other brands of components, including VCRs, cable boxes, and DVD players. A small LCD at the top of the remote displays the current mode. Several controls are located under a sliding lid that covers the bottom quarter of the remote.

Inputs and Outputs Notes

HDMI/DVI Input: This input consists of left and right audio jacks and an HDMI terminal. The HDMI jack can accommodate a copy-protected digital connection (HDCP) to other devices that have compatible interfaces. The HDMI jack is compliant with the EIA/CEA-861/861B standard and is not intended for use with personal computers. If you want to connect a DVI-compatible device, you will need an HDMI-to-DVI adapter cable. Since DVI does not carry audio signals, a stereo audio input is provided for the HDMI input. In addition to the HDMI-to-DVI adapter cable, you will also need stereo audio cables.

Note: The HDMI jack will accept 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i signals.

PC: This input consists of a stereo minijack and an analog RGB (D-Sub 15-pin) jack. This jack allows you to connect a personal computer with a D-Sub 15-pin output. When using the RGB (D-Sub 15-pin) jack, you must use the PC Audio input for your audio connection.

Component Video Inputs: The 2 sets of component video inputs will accept 1080i, 720p, 480p and 480i signals.

Anynet: A 3.5mm (1/8") minijack is provided for connecting the TV with a Samsung Anynet-compatible component, allowing the connected device to be controlled by the TV remote.

"Service" Jack: The rear panel of the TV has a Service jack for repair and software upgrades only.
